as a fair trial even possible at this point. in the game is a blur. i'm a trace of director of operations. and you don't want to be on this man's bad side leave it to the g.o.p. to assemble a ragtag team of neo conservatives to act as their political henchmen and this team's resume is as potent as it is powerful we'll show you the dark side of the republican presidential race. and ending the bloodshed by arming the insurgency does that sound like a contradiction to you well it just might be the american strategy in syria will tell you how much the us stands to gain by opening its arms store next. it's thursday february twenty third four pm here in washington d.c.
4:01 pm
i'm liz wall and you're watching r t. well the man accused of the biggest leak of classified information in u.s. history had his day in court today twenty four year old army private bradley manning was a reigned in a military court in fort meade maryland he faces a slew of charges including aiding the enemy today manning deferred his plea he allegedly gave hundreds of thousands of secret documents and cables to the whistle blowing website wiki leaks some celebrate manning as a hero for exposing the truth behind military operations his critics say he put lives at risk by making the secret information public but as he faces a military judge some question if manning stands a chance at a fair trial especially when you have the president of the united states saying this.
4:02 pm
so at this point is a fair trial even possible for the whistleblower joining me now is kevin zeese organizer of the october two thousand and eleven movement hi there kevin nice to see you so this issue is so we just heard it from president obama himself manning quote broke the law so when you have a commander in chief making that declaration how much of a chance does manning have at a fair trial. i that's a great question and i think it's one of the judge to consider and dismiss the case president bush obama is the commander in chief all the jurors in this case will be officers in the military the judge the prosecutor in that courtroom we under his command i can't imagine anyone think they have much of a career left in the military if they came out and found manning not guilty to the commander in chief to say he's guilty is called undue command influence in military law and this is unlawful and it should be enough reason to dismiss the case and
4:03 pm
some in addition to that some say he's already faced harsh punished punishment he was held for nineteen months while he was awaiting for his day in court allegedly he was tortured while he was in custody is subject to forced nudity so i mean is he being punished before even being tried. so there were almost two years in do is arrest for a year of that time he was held in solitary confinement which would be torture in most countries that did take away his clothes from as well during that time period they have not provided his attorney with all the all the videos and documents requested concerning how manning was treated that's one one area of many where many lawyers are being kept in the dark i think that should be something considered to affect the outcome of this case i think another example why we're likely to see if your trial it means found not guilty and he was tortured and is even worse of his own guilty. and you have in like many theme adding as
4:04 pm
a hero just this month he was nominated by and for a nobel peace prize by the atlantic parliament but what about the argument that he put american lives at risk by making the information public because by entering the military you do take this out of honor and he violated that oath what do you make of that argument. well this is a case of a very low level classified documents in fact there's questions as to whether they should have been classified at all the documents have been released they've been released fully including with the names of everyone mentioned the documents and no one's been injured from it no there's been no troops killed as a note troop troop movements known about no strategy the true spirit is a very low doc level doctrine says another area by the way where the court has or if the court martial refused to provide manning's lawyer with information as us that he's requested information about the internal reviews done by the white house the state department in the pentagon concerning the impact of these this release
4:05 pm
that's not been provided to him he's requested the opportunity to cross-examine the people who classify the doctors to understand their rationale because if doctors don't have an undue negative effect on national security they should be classified and so manning is essentially being prosecuted for allegedly leaking documents that probably should not have been classified and had no adverse national security fact that he's facing life in prison or that this is i think really an overstayer stepping by the military but the refusal by the information that means or one shows that we're going into what is very likely a kangaroo court with the outcome already already known. going along with our argument have been what would happen if people were to follow in bradley manning's but sapps. to you know it would be military that how would they know that there are secret documents cut in fact a secret especially highly classified information when you know when there
4:06 pm
were members of the military are leaking the documents in it for you know like what does this have to set a precedent for for it to be ok in the future. why the reason why we're seeing a kangaroo court we're seeing manning tortured for a year in solitary confinement isn't a very clear message to anybody who attempts to follow in his footsteps i think they're really trying to show you when we can do anything we want to you including give you a fake trial in front of the whole world so i think that's part of the effort here is to prevent that but in terms of these were these were documents were hundreds of thousands of people had legal access to these documents there was very little security with with these documents there's pictures from frontline has video showing the computer terminals where these documents were accessed with the passwords and codes in order to get in the documents but yet we have to also realize that when daniel ellsberg released the pentagon papers those are very high level secrets and even those were not releasing any national security information
4:07 pm
that should have been kept secret all we're finding out from even the highest level secret the pentagon papers in the lowest level secrets that meanings accused of is crimes an ethical behavior misbehavior by the u.s. far by u.s. foreign policy were showing how corporations and the government work closely together the support corporate profit rather than public interest we're showing all sorts of inappropriate behavior by people as i like secretary say clinton who ordered u.s. diplomats to spot on u.n. officials when they came to meetings in the united nations that's illegal yet she's not being prosecuted manning who is accused of sexually telling the truth is being prosecuted facing life in prison while people who commit war crimes and other crimes are not being prosecuted at all having a laugh they want to ask what do you think it would take for a gas that's to be served in this case. well i think the only way you can have justice case now is to recognize that president obama is undue command influence
4:08 pm
combined with the fact that these were very low level so your documents that should not have been classified the first place had no negative effect on national security all that adds up to drop the charges or even publish more than should have been it's time to put this behind us and not embarrass the u.s. military and u.s. government for there with a kangaroo court proceeding and one more question there kevin what does this all have to say about whistleblowers in the u.s. and the message being sent out to potential whistleblowers in the future. why that saying that president obama is not honest with us when he says he wants of the most open administration in history that he respects was a blowers and that kind of political rhetoric because his actions are quite the opposite his administration has been the most closed most aggressive of going after whistleblowers and i think it shows the american people in the world it is a close government a secret government that has no you tell its citizens the truth we're supposedly the ones that are in charge of this government cabin nice to have you on as always
4:09 pm
that was kevin zeese thank you organizer for the october two thousand and eleven movement. well in the race to be the next republican presidential nominee we have seen the rise and fall of several candidates the only thing all the candidates seem to meet eye to eye on is the fact there needs to be change and the white house but aside from ron paul if one of these guys does beat obama could we see a repeat of a previous administration and its policies are to correspond out and. takes a look at how bush era players are influencing the g.o.p. candidates. or scars a blast from the past rhetoric and a pretty clear cut idea about america's enemies kill them been there done that any action of that nature will be considered an act of war an act of terror fear mongering on repeat dictatorships respond to strength they don't respond to weakness the rest of the world looks at it in a laugh said it basically thinks it's a theater of the absurd
4:10 pm
a circus fueled by republican candidates advisors my name is cofer black. i'm a case officer of the direction of operations of the central intelligence agency notorious for promising bush to leave terrorists with flies crawling across their eyeballs and the afghan enemies with their heads on pikes putin trying to put together the evil empire again reaching neo con john bolton even a small national missile defense capability would be a threat to their first strike to which i say herat torture and wiretapping defender michael hates we've got to overthrow this guy iraq war supporter robert kagan is the right tactical thing to do on consistently amazed at how little responsibility any of these people have taken for their really truly horrific things that occurred during their watch michael chertoff feeling with hurricane katrina and pushing through the civil liberties killing act and self described medieval sort of guy and dick cheney's buddy david wurmser look at all these guys
4:11 pm
they played very important roles in in the bush administration they don't seem to be particularly humbled from all the massive failures that they that they were responsible for while their track records are far from enviable how could any self respecting person bring in any of these people that brought us that great day whether the afghan war oh that wasn't good enough how about the iraq war i got another one for you how about the war rods there are these people are losers you are right it's convenient so no surprise is one provocation resurfaces the president should have built credible threat of military action maximum covert operations. to block and disrupt the iranian program including taking out their scientists most americans don't know the man behind the scenes they're
4:12 pm
not thinking about john bolton and what a weirdo he was at the un and how he. almost destroyed america's international reputation or you know or for that matter really any of the you know any of the people that romney wants to bring but some embrace the rhetoric of coersion there are still i'm sure many americans that would. that would love to see flies on eyeballs and other things of people all over the world us versus the world and who should we demonize today a mentality promoted by recycled cast of characters keeping americans in a perpetual state of war readiness and the rest of the world on edge and especially if you're going to fourteen new york. we are going to take a short break but stick around ending the bloodshed by arming the insurgency does that sound like a contradiction to you well it just might be the american strategy of syria well tell you how much the u.s. stands to gain by opening its arms stores next.
4:13 pm
4:14 pm
a confession i am a total get a friend that i love rap and hip hop is that and for. that it was kind of a yesterday. i'm very proud of the world with its place. what drives the world the fear mongering used by politicians who makes decisions to break through it's already been made who can you trust no one. is imbued with the global machinery see where we had a state controlled capitalism is called sessions when nobody dares to
4:15 pm
ask we do our tea question more. welcome to the capital account i'm mr. well the u.s. has hinted it could eventually give arms to rebels in syria the obama administration says if a political solution to the crisis proved impossible it might consider other options this amid warnings that washington's continuing efforts against the syrian regime could see it fighting side by side with al qaeda art his guide to counterparts. amid bloodshed in syria more extremists are
4:16 pm
penetrating the country to help bring down a sought that's according to u.s. intelligence which says all current affiliated fighters were responsible for a series of deadly suicide bombings in damascus and aleppo targeted at syrian military and intelligence facilities be seen evidence of. extremist sunni extremists can't label them specifically as al qaida but similar ilk who are infiltrating the opposition's groups. while fighting in syria continues the violence in neighboring iraq has dropped in some areas by as much as fifty percent in the last few months this as an al-qaeda leader iman al-zawahiri as called on his supporters around the world to back the uprising in syria i do. think that these men who call
4:17 pm
themselves the mujahideen say they're on their way to fight a holy war against our song. in washington senators asked the head of america's intelligence james clapper you think what happens if assad falls are we prepared for the situation of a possible failed state were enjoys a safe harbor in refuge. from which to coordinate attacks his response bears no optimism there would be kind of a vacuum i think that would lend itself to. extremists . operating in syria which is particularly troublesome some ask a different question is the u.s. on the same side as all cry to syria and whether its policies are indirectly aiding the terrorists american strategists would have to be fools not to see what al qaeda is doing not to ask the question if it's good for al qaeda can it be good for us
4:18 pm
and not to look at say he may be a ruthless dictator and what he's doing but what comes after him when he falls i think al qaeda does its best work or it works best when it finds a country that is fundamentally a failed state this is why i'm against putting weapons in and aiding the anti assad resistance because an all out war there could be a disaster which leaves a failed state and syria even for many of those syrians who are not supportive of their president the fear of the alternative is far greater why are they sitting on the fence or why they are not in the streets with that if that is supporting the movement and there are often two figures is that one is the post as to be this. and pushed aside that would be the careless the opposition in syria is very fractured they don't seem to be under anybody's control this spite concerns voiced
4:19 pm
by top u.s. intelligence officials about anti extremists washington has failed to widen its calls to include armed opposition and therefore basically ignoring the fears of a huge part of the syrian population who don't want radicals gaining momentum and directing the country into chaos i'm going to check our reporting from washington our team. well tension with iran is fueling high gas prices around the u.s. and around the world over in the u.k. prices at the palm had a record high after tirant blocked oil in exports timber and it's in response of or in supporting news saying. it's put in place by the u.s. over nuclear fears artie's over bet it has more. filling up with go like this two years ago but of course me around seventy five pounds you think that's a lot well it now costs over a hundred because petrol in britain's never been more expensive. the average for
4:20 pm
a liter of diesel sortes over one pound forty three two dollars twenty five cents the previous peak was during the libyan conflict last may and his people at the pumps who are paying the price again this is a disaster again for motorists and not only are they being stung month after month now by these fuel price rises but there's also a concern that this is going to spread to the cost of every day items such as food because those transportation costs to get the food to store will be passed on to businesses and then the consumer it's a result britain had banked on when threatening to block iran's oil exports to the e.u. although the books are major customer individual members aren't britain imported just eleven thousand barrels last year not even one percent of its total imports but in practice the tough talking has backfired iran struck first by freezing deliveries to british and french companies a move not harmful in itself but one that stoked fears in an already nervous market
4:21 pm
with iran's saber rattling could be for real it's already threatened to block the strait of hormuz a vital oil trading route iranis is trying at the moment before the sanctions come into effect to do what it can to talk up the price of oil without actually sacrificing any production so it's seeking to to benefit from maintaining its exports buttoning a higher price for each barrel that it sells the timing of sanctions couldn't be worse a loss of production in south sudan yemen and the north seas already driving prices higher with the rainy and crude still in demand in asia it's the u.k. and it's motorists that are the hardest hit i mean i thought that the company thanks for that if i was by myself. i don't think i'll have a different people by people driving. effect how much you know yes i think
4:22 pm
it probably does i think that's why there's a small. it's hoped the threat of sanctions will bring iran to the negotiating table over its nuclear program but so long as the numbers are rising here in may not be iran is the first to buckle in what's become a dangerous game of brinkmanship experts predict the ongoing tensions twenty five percent oil prices by easter. bennett london. and despite the oil embargo the u.s. and britain are warning israel not to attack iran's nuclear facilities saying new sanctions needs more time to work the country's top leaders believe a strike would be quote unwise and what likely not to hold the iranian nuclear program artie's iranian glu chicago has more from tel aviv. when israel's leaders are actively drumming up the military rhetoric. iran is the biggest terror exporter
4:23 pm
in the world the israeli government and its security forces will continue to act forcefully systematically and calmly against international terrorism dating from iran. a potential israeli rocket clash looks more likely than never there is speculation a preemptive strike against iran's nuclear sites could happen as early as spring or summer although that's not causing undue concern in israel i think possibly people you know they make their plans for vacation you know passover vacation summer vacation possibly people are beginning to wonder well is there going to be a war is something going to mess it up or i think they're probably going ahead with it. with sort of a thought we're back to my it would be nice if we could get a flight that we could cancel you know you know it's that sort of thing israel has previous experience when it comes to putting and then to use them fissions which pose a potential threat in one thousand nine hundred one is just wiped out reactors in iraq they struck again in two thousand and seven hitting sites in syria but with
4:24 pm
iran's nuclear program things may not be so simple that if israel attacks iran it will not stop iran forever from getting nuclear weapons the only postpone it for a relatively brief amount of time the. installations are too diverse and far flung to destroy a fact of lee israel does not have us poor white house secretary advisor was in israel over the weekend warning against a move on iran saying it was better to wait for tougher sanctions to take effect in the coming months but mines may already be made up i think one of the things that to create this aura of inevitability is to shut them up to shut up opposition at home and of course to convince the united states and europe that this is an inevitability it's going to happen don't oppose it in fact why don't you help us out there is a question mark however over whether israel has what it takes to carry out the mission i doubt with the we have the capability. of creating damage is to
4:25 pm
the extent of the mediating the program and even if israel's military prowess will allow it to carry out a strike on underground facilities in iran chances are it won't and there as you know saddam hussein and bashar assad by the time they knew what was happening was over and could just you know grumble without having to fight back you imagine iran sitting still you know all day day after day day after the war is this really critical back i think any any sane person realizes that there will almost guaranteed be missiles falling on israel and considering iran for one of the twentieth century's longest wars against iraq in the one nine hundred eighty s. the consequences could be far reaching and destructive. israel has been suffering some bad weather as of late but it's likely that even the strongest winds will blow the country's foreign policy off its course and when it comes to israel's forecast
4:26 pm
for iran the storm clouds seem to be growing ever darker in tel aviv r.t. . well up next is the capital account with lauren lister let's check in with laura to see blood is on today's agenda lauren what can we look forward to i live well you know we cannot have a show without talking about greece these days but now that the e.u. says that the euro zone is facing russia recession of course greece is leading that charge down and for anyone who thinks that this greek deal has been a solution we're going to talk about once again why it is not with someone who has been saying that greece is going to default for two years now now of course many more people are piling on to that argument but he says that what we should be looking at is not the fault not bailout not focusing on those we need to focus on contagion so we're going to look at live how the dominoes could fall and what impact that will have and what exactly would trigger that for other banking systems other countries other bond markets and of course the united states too interesting
