these are the images the world has been seeing from the streets of canada. showing corporations rule today. let's. get some. work report suspicious activity or story it's that sees something say something mentality that's causing a rift within the u.s. neighbors spying on neighbors people constantly looking over their shoulder supposing terrorism threats around every corner are we really any safer or has the u.s. become the country i cried wolf. and speaking of unfounded fears north korea is suspending its nuclear program and you're in a new report says iran is nowhere near creating a bomb so is all the spear mongering just wasted energy. plus president obama's locking up your freedoms and there are going away the key the new assault
5:01 pm
on american liberties the right to a free and fair trial we'll tell you how the scope for suspected terrorists is large and the margin for error is even larger. it's thursday march first i am here in washington d.c. i'm liz wahl and you're watching our team. well today it seems we live in a world where constant surveillance is becoming the norm and it doesn't help that the government encourages it encourages you and i to keep a very close eye on everything and everyone around us but aside from all the obvious alarm bells the department of homeland security and the f.b.i. encourages people to report so-called suspicious activity is included paying with cash travelling long distances and shaving a veered or changing your hair color having politically active or religious beliefs
5:02 pm
even wearing backpacks and those are just to name a few so as fear mongering runs rampant in our citizens being stripped of their right to privacy are these marine important i have takes a look at how these days almost anyone can be considered to terrorists. the united states of america is home to over three hundred thirty million people we are a country known for freedom. that was then this is today it's. sure report suspicious activity for the land of liberty is fast becoming known as the land of fear and suspicion there are individuals in the united states who seek to carry out acts of terrorism the post nine eleven slogan born in new york city has been adopted nationwide don't assume it was left by accident if you see something say something this see something say something american campaign depicts
5:03 pm
terrorist scenarios that encourages members of the public to keep watch on well other members of the public according to f.b.i. pamphlets distributed to local businesses potential terrorist activity indicators include always paying with cash wearing backpacks and badly quote and the discreet and prolonged use of cameras or not taking in the cybercafe owners are encouraged to keep a watch on any customers overly concerned with privacy even just trying to shield your screen from others can make you a suspect. first thing government policies or making anti-war statements can also land citizens on the u.s. watch list as a two thousand and nine us defense department categorizes public protests as a low level terrorism we live in a military dominated society. the people are unaware.
5:04 pm
terrorism is a french you know in nine eleven is clearly. has been exploited and. sustained by encouraging a state of public surveillance some new yorkers of hughes the governments of fostering more paranoia and security alone we are now to say all of the act. this is a listening. you know this is how it be by this rushing yeah no i don't agree that it has far reaching the n.y.p.d. under fire again for its intelligence gathering campaign involving a muslim american. and illegal surveillance scandal erupted in the big apple after police officers were caught spying on mom and muslim community according to the associated press thousands were under surveillance with no evidence or even allegations of criminal behavior we have to keep this country safe this is a dangerous place many in the u.s. fear that with america's escalating definition of the vicious activity the
5:05 pm
government's expanding powers remain the biggest threat to the people security. r.t. new york. earlier george hamon tara pounder of survive and thrive t.v. joined again he gave me his opinion on whether the u.s. of drawing more and more paranoid with the increased amount of fine surveillance that a lesson. i think that america and the politicians that run this country are forcing a. new era of told terry ism and spying on fellow americans and with the economic collapse that that's our place right now in kind of expect more polar terrorism and more spreading of fear and fear mongering by or government carriage said totalitarianism is a very extreme ward would you go as far as to use that word well i mean yesterday i covered the occupy movement they actually closed down
5:06 pm
a distribution center wal-mart distribution center for six hours and the government is now arresting leaders of protest movements across the country and they shut down those the occupy movement basically with a coordinated attack and if that isn't a attack on freedom of speech in our liberties i don't i don't know what it was it also came out recently that as apartment of homeland security has been. monitoring the occupy wall street movement how do you feel about a federal government agency keeping tabs on protesters i think it's atrocious i think the bureaucrats that we pay with our tax dollars should actually be going after real terrorists than actual citizens that have grievances with the corrupt politicians and the corrupt financial elites in this country instead of trying to
5:07 pm
shut down free speech instead of arresting these young kids since pepper spraying them in arresting them he should be addressing their grievances and take a look at wall street and take a look at the big corporate business and try to right the wrongs of the inequality in this country. earlier. what activities count as special as changing or appearing. paying with cash and sar so forth and other things that almost everybody does at some point in time almost anyone there are qualified to be on a terrorist watch lists but i actually read the twenty five flyers of the f.b.i. underneath the communities against terrorism passed out and the actually encourage people to call all in it any number and mention a secret phrase trip wire so it's reeks of kind of the secret star reporting on your fellow citizens and here's some of the businesses of a targeted with those fires hobby shops if you're interested in remote controlled
5:08 pm
aircraft if you're in a hotel and you don't want maid service if you're at a mall and you will ride with a group of individuals split up but are still communicating by phone that could be a dry run for a terrorist activity i feel like a lot of us are guilty of some of those things that some point in time. watch next time you go to the car rental shop and you read the car watch the questions they ask you i've talked with a couple of my subscribers about you general they want to know where your go and they want to know what you're doing and they're going to question you if you pay cash these are not anyone's concern with your private movements in a vehicle that you're renting this is just overreach of authority and overreaction to so-called terrorist threat and you're good looking at the other side of the argument i mean. what's wrong with being asked to report suspicious activity if law
5:09 pm
enforcement gets useless information it so be it as long as it keeps the public safe. well that's the balance you know the balance that we have to come to in this country is safety versus security and when you give up your liberties and you give up your freedom in europe your privacy for safety and security i'd say you've given up your freedom in general when you've lost the whole point of it the it's keeping the balance it's keeping a balance of keeping the public safe but without infringing upon our rights that are guaranteed by the constitution that's that's the that's the tricky part and i also brought a lot to light recently of the new york police department monitoring muslims this includes keeping a close eye on muslim mosques muslim students simply due to the fact that they are muslim i'm so are certain ethnicities and religions more likely more likely to fall victim to spying sure i mean they may be modern monitoring muslims right now that
5:10 pm
you may not have a problem with you know i have a problem with the civil liberties aspect of violating that and soon they may be moderating people that happen to own guns legally i mean if you look at those twenty five flyers they talk about martial arts and paint ball you know modern if you go play paint ball and you this is quoting the flyer if you're converting large parts of rural land to paint ball fields or military style training camps you could be a low level terrorists i think the n.r.a. should take a big issue with some of these issues i mean this affects the left and affects the right it's an overreach by the f.b.i. and government authority i guess they'll better watch ourselves that when we're in the paint ball field thank you for a way again that was george hammond our founder of survive and thrive. well north korea has agreed to suspend its nuclear enrichment program that's also agree to let international to let in international nuclear inspectors in return the u.s.
5:11 pm
says it will provide food aid it's being hailed as a first step in improved relations between the two countries meanwhile iran which has faced intense especially from the west over its program said recently that having a nuclear weapon is quote a second this as the west seems convinced they are conspiring to build a nuclear weapon so is the so-called axis of evil for ha perhaps not as much as a threat as many think they want to talk more about this deed joins me now in studio welcome to the show jim all. this news from north korea has many cautiously optimistic secretary of state hillary clinton called it a modest percept in light of this can the country be seen as less of a threat. i think that i think that is that that is the outcome of this and it's you know it's very early in the process i think this is a promising development i think it's an indication of where we should be looking to
5:12 pm
go with pulitzer ation worldwide that we should be seeking to have inspectors on the ground verification measures in place and so you know really live up to the axiom of trust but verify. right and at the same time iran which also has come under suspicion from the last. foreign minister has said that nuclear arms production is close to a great set so this kind of goes along with iran stance this whole time that their nuclear program is for peaceful purposes yeah it does and it's actually you know this this nuclear weapons the same comment actually reflects what the iranian leadership position has been for a long time now which is that actually you know the supreme leader issued that law saying that nuclear weapons are on islam and that they are prohibited that iran does not seek them. so this is consistent with that and i think it's also
5:13 pm
consistent with what united states military intelligence civilian leaders have consistently said which is that iran's program remains a civilian program they may be working towards nuclear latency and he's working toward certain capabilities that what they're not working towards is actually building a bomb they have not taken they have not made the political decision to do that and so what we should be focusing on is making sure they don't make that decision how seriously can the iranian foreign minister's statement be taken could be taken as a sign that. that in fact they iran is not developing a nuclear weapon or is it more how. seriously cannot be taken as it's being called well you never take anything like that as an article of faith but what you do what you can do is test it we should be talking to the iranian foreign minister we should be talking to the iranian government and we should be working to put those
5:14 pm
inspectors in place you know there are inspectors on the ground in iran but. the u.n. inspection body has said is they want greater access so they can actually verify that this is the case that he ron cannot make a move to build a nuclear weapon so what we should do is actually test this this claim that it's that it remains a peaceful program and reinforce the mechanisms that can guarantee that that is the case now despite all this war rhetoric seems to be continuing specially from israel this fight hard evidence that iran is developing a nuclear weapon what is behind that. well look it's really it's a matter of right now you have the netanyahu coming to washington he's going to be meeting with the president on monday you have a packed conference you know the sort of hawkish israel lobby coming to town this weekend for their their major lobbying kalaw and they are looking to ramp up
5:15 pm
pressure on the white house to take a more hawkish position towards iran and to really. to limit the white house's options in how they deal with iran you have talks apparently coming up between iran and the u.s. and the europeans and the chinese and the russians and israel is concerned or at least netanyahu is concerned that there would be a move to actually trade concessions on the u.s. side and exchange for concessions on the iranian side so this talk of war really boxes in the president's options and it lowers the possibility that he could make any kind of concessions because it not only poisons the the well for talks but politically it forces the president to have to say and do some very sort of combative combative things and what you are you are prediction conference like leaders from israel coming to washington d.c. what do you predict will what i predicted it's actually you know it's it's funny
5:16 pm
military leaders in the u.s. down the line look talk to any one of them they all say there is no military solution to the iranian nuclear issue it's just it's not possible you can't bomb knowledge if the if israel or the u.s. goes into iran and does military strikes it's going to delay the program but and then you have to go in there again every two years but what it also will do is convince iran. that it's no longer a sin to try to pursue a nuclear weapon that in order to keep the regime intact they have to do that so that's going to be on the table what the. conference is going to be about is pressuring the president to say it in iranian nuclear weapons capability not an actual nuclear weapon but if they even have the capability to present to build one that's unacceptable grounds for we're only will be there this week and i'll be interesting to see how that does play out you know what would it take for this
5:17 pm
so-called axis of evil to be seen as less of a threat it would take what we've seen with north korea and what hopefully we can see with iran if the temperature isn't increased too far which is to actually have some diplomatic agreements in place that can reduce the tension that can get the sides around the table to resolve their issues not by issuing rhetoric through you know through the media or through missile tests or you know saber rattling but to actually get some confidence building measures in place where we can say we're on a trajectory towards resolving these issues instead of on a trajectory towards war. pleasure to have you on the show as always that was jim i love the policy director at the national iran and american council. but still ahead on r t you have the right to remain detained indefinitely that is of course if you are suspected of terrorism but even protestors fall under that
5:18 pm
umbrella so whatever happened to american liberties that story next. what drives the world the fear mongering used by politicians who makes decisions to create through it's already been made who can you trust no one who is your view with the noble mission received where we had a state controlled capitalism school sessions when nobody dares to ask we do our t. question more. pepper spray that just brings arise right right i mean it's like a derivative of pepper it's a food product essentially. it's much stronger than anything you'd get by absolutely dolls and sometimes i'm stronger than any kind of.
5:19 pm
well president obama has made some tweaks to the controversial indefinite detention law the national defense authorization act or n.c.a.a. sparked outrage over its provision that allows the governments of detained american citizens indefinitely without due process this week the president issued a directive that would not make it a requirement for the military to detain suspects but it still gives some authority to detain suspects indefinitely so do the changes really help to restore civil liberties that were stripped in the original bill or is this simply too late i'll answer this and more david seaman journalist and host of the d.l. show i mean a little bit earlier. it is too little too late this is a national emergency this is actually a national crisis because this is not something that you know could be signed into
5:20 pm
law this is not conspiracy theory or fantasy this was signed into law by president obama on new year's eve and over the past couple months very few television networks other than you guys and a couple of others have covered this issue in depth and so it was signed into law on new year's eve and now it is actually active it takes effect we're now living in day one of post and da america and his only response is to produce this directive a waiver which is not really legally valid this is what he plans on doing but it doesn't bind future presidents and even i mean we have to admit that it's some point there will be another president obama's not to be president for alternative and even he can turn around and change his stance on this so the directive is totally unacceptable he should not have signed this in the first place so on the surface it seems like the president is trying to make an effort to address some of the concerns over the bell i mean did spark
5:21 pm
a lot of outrage so do you see this as more of a p.r. move to make it seem like the president is taking action to address those concerns it absolutely does seem like a p.r. ploy last night on twitter and on facebook we saw all tens of thousands maybe even millions of people just freak out about this and so that you know they go to google and they search for m d a ok and when they see an article comes when they see an article it comes up saying obama is addressing this and he has produced a policy directive they go oh ok obama's got this but the fact of the matter is obama doesn't at this this is treacherous this is really scary this is like driving down a highway at seventy miles an hour and you have a flat tire you don't keep going you pull over immediately this is not something that should be addressed next week or next month by congress this summer and these to be addressed right away. i've been telling my viewers this on my show. you know you have to tell everybody you know on facebook or twitter or wherever go through your phone contact list on your cell phone and tell your family members about this
5:22 pm
this is really happening right now and very few media outlets in the u.s. are covering it at all. and they have it if you want to ask you want to bring attention to the other side of the argument here the press threat lee thousand president obama said quote a rigid and inflexible requirement to place suspected terrorists into military custody but undermine national security interest so what do you make of the argument that something needs to be done to make it easier to take to detain those that do pose a danger to the u.s. i mean who are these people out there like it hasn't been properly defined and we had a guardian there was a guardian op ed that came out the other day written by not only worth and in this op ed she calls and being signed into law actually treason i believe that everybody in congress see voted for this thing and knew what they were doing they need to be
5:23 pm
removed from office peacefully but they need to be removed lead to vote them out or have a recall or some other measure and president obama's administration has to be held accountable as well for what they knowingly signed into law who was a piece of it came out i believe yesterday or the day before representative blackburn in forbes magazine and she's saying that now the t.s.a. is going to expand their grass to highways and maybe even bus depots and that was an agency that was originally intended to just do airport screening that was the whole point of the t.s.a. was just korean passengers before you get on an airplane and now they've turned into something very close to this weird secret police force they have uniforms they have metal badges and things like and yeah they just confirm the fears that the. we'll have out there that we are turning into this police state and there's no other way to describe it now david you and many critics of any a want to see change
5:24 pm
you said you want to see members of congress that allowed this to happen step down or be voted out but in reality what do you think is the likelihood that if law or some of the more controversial aspects of the law can get repealed it can definitely be repealed the problem right now is that the vast majority of americans don't even know about this i was talking to a lawyer yesterday and she had never heard of it and you know when you tell people on the sidewalk about this first thing you're crazy and then you say no check out that the article about of the new york times check out the piece about it guardian then they believe you but they go there's nothing i can do about this and that's not true what you have to do is. put pressure on those in congress to support things like representative ron paul has a bill that would do away with this and i believe it's less than two hundred words long it's not some sneaky bill all it is is to repeal the most egregious sections of the d.n.a. and there are a couple of other bills out there that you similar things all you have to do as
5:25 pm
a you know as the public is to our congressman this is completely unacceptable it needs to be repealed and then we're going to hold you accountable afterwards because you actually did get away with this and you thought that we weren't looking and we were all right david thank you for coming on the show that was journalist and host of the d.l. show david seaman thank you well we've been at witness the downfall of a fair share of politicians from extramarital affairs to off color comments it seems there is little tolerance for those that fail to remain politically correct but as our thing correspondent on associate carrick and i explore sometimes what seems it as acceptable earth is unacceptable doesn't make much sense. the potential politician for the country as a whole is going much more educated plus a blog with sex jokes and tweets on plot devices this equation work in the u.s. if you're going to be offensive you should be making a greater statement or at least be making people laugh he was just like kind of
5:26 pm
a frat boy we're nothing particular if you're a man who works in a dell or a successful businessman launched a run for u.s. senate but dropped out of the race after a barrage of attacks for not mincing his words online we've actually had politicians that aren't quickly correct on the entirety of this country from when franklin to many of the senators and congress members you see today watch double standards apply to being p.c. depends on who their base is i think when you're newt gingrich and when you're rick santorum as we thought it would be it's like you want to get an applause and say something totally authentic brag about how many people you kill say that people should be left to die they don't have health care insult the gay soldier like a mormon into period if you are the better you do in the polls with republicans these allegations far far from bill clinton to eliot spitzer i sincerely apologize to anthony weiner i did not tweet scandal walks hand in hand with american
5:27 pm
politicians it shows you that behind the surface you know the vid near of propriety veneer of you know respectability there's some really pretty kooky pretty kinky people that are out there you know once you begin to unmask them you know if you know people are shocked it's often not what's said or done but the way it's reacted to and followed up on the impacts of politicians career if bill clinton yeah i was having an affair with my interned she's really cute what can i say my wife she loves you know lucy or ice princess she's not but now i mean you know impeachment would have never happened secretly a lot of people men and women would have been like finally someone to keep. you know real similar episodes with politicians abroad to me often get no more than a chuckle in america going outside the line can be extremely criticized other countries look at us and think we're ridiculous i think there's a lot of hypocrisy and moral then connor is running for u.s.
5:28 pm
congress one of my chinese friends they call me gay because i was on the outside of you know on the inside this is not politically correct america he says political correctness is merely a tool in the hands of those using it there are certain topics that can be brought up just because the minute the media will figure is on the run with it your opponent gets their hands on a bill run with it they really try to use it against you from sex scandals to raunchy blogs to anti this or that column and the watchful eyes of the media and opponents picking through the book mole hills to turn into mountains impose an expectation of public political correctness many americans may no longer care about privately and psychiatric in our part see new york. i'll be a lot of show is coming up in just a half hour let's check in with the law to see what is on today's agenda a lot of looking real authority you say with our we've got a packed show tonight
5:29 pm
