hello again is kevin i see tonight with the headlines for you broken news journalists who resigned from al-jazeera q station bosses of fabricating reports to broadcast their view rather than show what's really happening in conflict on syria unconfirmed footage coming out of the country is making it easier for spin doctors to manipulate the facts for political ends. developing news tonight reports of a possible bomb blast near the parts plane of the u.s. defense secretary to british base in afghanistan he wasn't on board we hear and an

explosion has not been officially confirmed this barack obama hosts favorite camera in washington these the latest live pictures from washington d.c. the two leaders mulling over their afghan strategy just days after the massacre of sixteen people by an american soldier in the country the two leaders said the relationship between the countries is the strongest it's ever been they've got a serious and important agenda that would also include iran's. china warning of the urgent need to slow down its economic growth and bring in political reforms to averts political and financial disaster it comes at a time when debt ridden europe rise up the world's second largest economy as a potential cash. you're up to date always more from us online as well r.t. dot com next though we sit down with british m.p. john baron who believes that sanctions and threats of military action don't work when it comes to solving the iranian nuclear dispute.
12:32 pm
i'm joined by john baron a british member of parliament and the only member of the conservative party to vote against taking military action in libya john thanks for speaking to r.t. you know you recently put forward a motion to the house of parliament urging the government to rule out military action in iran you say that move will be counterproductive why is that but i think it would it's not only naive but it's illogical it's naive because the policy of force has clearly failed policy of saber rattling and sanctions has not worked they are yesterday's partner says iran is not going to be deterred from pursuing its nuclear program but it's also illogical because we're keeping an option on the table which clearly influenced the situation people know that it's. would be a disaster if we pursued that option of force it's not working at the really it's of
12:33 pm
turn our mind against it but at the same time it's an option that actually as i say it inflames the situation and makes peaceful outcome less likely your motion though was almost unanimously rejected clearly people feel that iran may strike first in the region why shouldn't we believe that well i don't know whether they think iran could strike first but they feel that they're not should be kept on the table because you know it is i suppose in their view sensible the options are left on the table going there are your options when it comes to negotiations i take a different view i think by taking the option off the table we in the short term reduce tensions which is what we want there's already talk of you know perhaps over the next few months the israelis considering a military strike it reduces the option short our chances short of a potential accident inflaming a conflict like for example or the shooting down of a they were on air six five four. but longer term but taken out option off the
12:34 pm
table it i think increases the charts of a peaceful outcome and perhaps gives us time to reflect on what is desperately needed here which is a fresh approach but isn't britain justified in keeping this option on the table given iran's defiance and aggressive rhetoric well there forget there's been if you like defiance by both sides i mean both sides of this and i'm talking about the international community here generally both sides have missed opportunities to better relations between the two one can think of for example immediately after nine eleven they rob was one of the first to actually show solidarity with the us in contrast to many in the middle east street also in the early stages of the afghan war iran made approaches what was their reward to be classed as part of the axis of evil by president bush and that led to very directly to the removal of the reformist and moderate a crescent hatami so i think it's fair to say there's been
12:35 pm
a put you just missed both sides and that is why you know one is calling for a more balanced approach to this because that was the moment when iran are simply being painted as a sort of illegitimate. difficult country to deal with when as i say there's been operations as mr on both sides as a number an element of truth in that though they have been quite the military and they've had the chance to come to the negotiating table and they haven't yet so i would agree with that i think they were wrong for example to. turn their back on president obama's initial overtures if you like and i don't deny that i think you know let's be absolutely clear about this i'm not an apologist for iran's human rights record for their sponsoring or for our state terrorism overseas or for many other aspects of the regime the point i'm making is that we've got to view and judge this in a balanced way and there have been opportunities as i say this by both sides. what has happened and was developed as this. almost game of brinkmanship threats and
12:36 pm
camp threats so if britain and the west does take this option of military action off the table would that not be giving iran the upper hand here well let's let's look at the facts the policy of saber rattling and sanctions clearly failed i mean if you want one example of that iran is now toying with or it is actually bringing forward the all in bako that was imposed by the e.u. certainly bring it forward when it comes to france and the u.k. and i think we've got to be we've got to look back and realize that. the nuclear program has been stated objective of the iranian state for quite a while and we're going back decades they see it as arm a means of expressing their power within the region status is important in the region we underestimate the importance of status in the region the reason saddam hussein for example is not deny the existence of the is because it was in his in his interest not to do so so i think you have to be realistic the present policy is
12:37 pm
a failed present policy is a heightening tensions what we want is now to pull back from any chance of military conflict and take a fresh look at the situation and adopt a fresh approach which i think should include an implicit recognition or at least the offer of an impressive recognition of iran's status as a regional superpower iran's preemption of that oil embargo on the sanctions does that mean they've cracked fired some or britain and france i'm not sure that backfired you don't impose sanctions unless you know that you can see it through i think what they do show there is is that iran is absolutely intent on her nuclear program and her bringing the sanction of the deadlines forward i think is a clear example of that you know i think i think we've got to be very clear. sanctions saber rattling affair i think we all know that a military strike is a bright israel or anybody else would be a disaster for the region if we can light iran and fury it would not. even the u.s.
12:38 pm
defense secretary said it may delay matters for a year may you know if iran has her heart set on a nuclear program she will not be deterred she hasn't been a military strike will encourage her to do so for all those reasons it would be disaster therefore let's be realistic let's take the option off the table try to foster better relations better engage with iran and do what nixon did to the chinese as basically in six years and so there is not deny the reality of iran's power and i do not accept the argument that if iran is allowed to continue with its nuclear program and touched on here it says then it will promote some kind of nuclear arms race and that rachel i think you've got to first of all look at the evidence the latest i a e a report there is in my view new some new can go on there is new peer substantial evidence of a nuclear weapons program or a decision to pursue one so after iraq i think we've got to be very very careful
12:39 pm
circumstantial evidence i'm afraid is not good enough and we went to war in iraq on a false premise as it turned out before we even think about came down this road we want to see substantial evidence. and secondly even if you accept that there can villepin a nuclear weapons program i for one do not buy the argument that it's going to lead to some sort of nuclear arms race in the region there is no evidence to suggest that iran is any more irrational than any other member of the existing nuclear club the fear about the rhetoric and the loss of both sides have rhetoric president bush's axis of evil for example is rhetoric russia has come out with rhetoric many other countries have come out with rhetoric what is important is actions not words and you know there is no evidence suggests that the theory of nuclear deterrent should not be there to this region as it does to other parts of the world after all india impact. in
12:40 pm
a war. restraint i'm afraid there's only one country in the world has actually used nuclear weapons and that will go israel's recent rhetoric around the option of military action has been at least if not more aggressive than iran's why are they allowed to do it if iran is not you know i happen to believe and i and i. believe in the way we should balance in that region but i do believe you know you can understand the reunion for you that there is sort of double standards to a certain extent israel have developed nuclear weapons so we are so we understand but is not a signature of the n.p.t. iran is a signature of the n.p.t. and yet is going through this very very intense scrutiny with implied threats as well and i think there's a we've got to be very careful to show a balance in our approach which comes back to the original discussion we were having about the need for that balance when discussion discussing the issue in general is it really balance though to allow iran to arm itself with nuclear
12:41 pm
weapons well as i said that we come back to the evidence business and let's examine the evidence so you point to me the substantive evidence of that i have failed to see it our former directors and director generals of the i have said they cannot see this stand of evidence so i think we have to be very very careful here we cannot want to make the same mistake we made in iraq where on the basis of secret intelligence and circumstantial evidence we basically went to war in a false promise could we see a rerun of that i think there is a thing you know the rhetoric is building up i mean there is you know the annual condemn nation of iran is is you get used to ever after a while but this time around you certainly seem to be ratcheting up the rhetoric a map where it's way and you know we're now talking about the human rights records of iran and the sponsoring of state terror state terrorism overseas i mean this is that this is very bad over. the put is not
12:42 pm
a reason for it cannot justify war it cannot justify military intervention so we've got to make sure we keep a check on the certainly given what happened in iraq and how it was shown to be founded on a false premise why are british m.p.'s so keen to keep this option of military action with iran on the table i think the vast majority of m.p.'s here don't want to make the same mistake twice but. i personally think that they are wrong from the view that you keep an option on the table which in my view only heightens the tensions and is having no effect whatsoever and i think that what should happen with our because we need to look for the news no good just taking an option on the table i think that's the solution i think what we need to do is what. the us did in the sixty's and seventy's with china in the one nine hundred sixty is the us influence in asia was on the brain trying it was beginning to flex her muscles president nixon did not deny the reality of chinese power he engaged the visit took
12:43 pm
everybody by surprise but it was the right position at the time it was a defining moment and what the u.s. must do it was put behind it it's an innocent towards the rock on which sort of. what defines this crisis. try to better engage and realize and offer implicit recognition of iran's status as a regional super power and the reason why the u.s. is the elephant in the room here in my view is that israel will not strike unless and which of washington. agrees. for a whole host of reasons including the fact that there is a question mark over the military capability of israel to finish the job if it started john baron thank you. for.
