11:30 pm
welcome back to the big picture i'm tom arbonne coming up in this half hour india is changing its attitude laws making access to life saving drugs more affordable for its citizens explain why thomas jefferson would have applauded this decision also the republican party loves to start conspiracy theories in attempts to sway american voters why do they resort to these tactics and if they really think they're fooling anyone and is a nice dealy take out a former wall street executive is come clean on goldman sachs what do we the people need to do to make sure banks don't screw us over again.
11:31 pm
in the best of the rest of the news the nation of india is taking on a giant trans national pharmaceutical company in a decision that could have far reaching effects around the planet india is allowing a local drug company to manufacture and sell the cancer drug nexavar which is currently patented by german based pharmaceutical giant bear as a result of the decision next of our will be available to cancer patients in india at a little over a dollar a pill or as bayer was charging nearly fifty dollars a pill or eight thousand eight hundred cancer patients in india who desperately need the drug right now and can't afford to pay for it and india's decision could prompt other nations to block trans national problems that will companies and do what's best for their population and when not what's best for corporate profits so isn't it time for the united states to rethink its drug patent laws to allow sick people to afford a lifesaving medicine or should we just keep giving corporate welfare but these regulations called at and laws to pharmaceutical giants through the patent laws
11:32 pm
here offer his take on it is no aspirate radio talk show host and author of the book conscientious equity he'll welcome back. hey tom thanks for having me thanks for joining us why do you oppose welfare for impoverished children but support welfare for a multi-billion dollar transnational corporations well let's first talk about india as if india needs any excuse to steal american intellectual property i mean that's such a joke i mean they're stealing so much from entrepreneurs like me already as if they need an excuse for it because our show hosts are far beyond logic at all in tom i under the lived to be a hundred years old in fact i want to live to be more than one hundred and i hope that you do too because i look forward that you and i still have these conversations and debates fifty years from now in the reason why we're both going to be doing that is because these pharmaceutical companies are doing incredible things this innovation we're all living longer we're having a better quality of life in the reason tom that's happening is because of innovation if somebody has to pay for it in these pharmaceutical companies that you
11:33 pm
just mentioned have programs so sick people in poor people have digital people they can't afford it they can't have access to these where there is no where near is still shared ahead of suggesting neal and you know that and you know back in the day thomas jefferson just laid out a want to read the whole long quote but he basically said. that ideas should be freely spread from one to another over the globe for the moral and mutual instruction of man and improvement of his condition seems to have been peculiarly and benevolently designed by nature and he goes through this whole thing about basically you know we shouldn't be having patent was he was a he in fact he originally you read his letters to james madison he wanted the bill of rights to make patent copyright laws illegal you know no monopolies in commerce and his his thinking was that we always stand any any inventor stands on the shoulders of previous people you know thomas edison if they're going to patent if
11:34 pm
the guy who had discovered that he did carbon would glow had patented it. thomas edison couldn't have invented the light bulb he would have been prevented from doing it that's what these pharmaceutical companies are trying to through right now so some ads are way too long. jefferson thought they should last three years striving to the idea or use of throwing to the idea that the united states government should take over all research and development to the pharmaceuticals should they tell the us government already pays for more than half of it right now patients of electric light bulbs we pay the american government for a lot of the really nasty already are we how we develop what it was that it was the nasa program that helped develop l.e.d.s. it was the nasa program to develop a lot of advances in federal government created years ago the so they should know and more than half of all i know there was genuine do you fresh there are drugs we're doing right now here you know we've been doing it first for half a century the national institutes of health found more than half of all of the original research on pharmaceuticals and i don't want to go. it is true the united
11:35 pm
states government to get them involved in issues like health care they're going to they're going to mess it all up i mean the american government has to like i'd like united health care is doing a marvelous what i have in the desert wonderful innovation where you know people who feel particularly for the line and let me lay this out as it is to put every last penny on the line to invent things they have to be compensated for i have a very nice we're going to go backwards in time i agree i agree so the question is should they be compensated for ten years for twenty years or seventeen years i think that was really some of the their head of yours should have seen if you know how to be dishonest your guest says three years because what you see is that there's no significant advances until you have a little with zero with a v.c. innovation doesn't happen hello padlocks why are you the way you want to look at to be here fifty years from now having a great debate because we're going to only live to be another twenty years because this country is not innovating in health care that's the huge look relieved city for example and if i see what you went you went from from the from the penicillin
11:36 pm
drugs to the tempter cycling drugs to the macrolides the written aizen type drugs to the quinolones each one of those jobs seemed miraculously to follow the expiration of the patents of the previous drugs if they do we really want to be saying slow down your development and this is corporate welfare by regulation. tom this is this is akin the government picking winners and losers say exactly my response was a turning who successfully rough patches of rules it sounds like socialism to me i agree lose unless this doesn't dilute that mr seventy one years back in three years like jefferson suggested well three years is not long enough you're not going to get people who say to the markets are not going to make i really think every bit of their equity in their homes because they have this idea you know they have to have a redesign the next morning they need us all benefits so much in expression we inform a cynical expression the inequality of our life in expression in our health care ok
11:37 pm
and now the government is to take it all in i get it you're so you're supporting you want if you want to continue the welfare program for the pharmaceutical companies i understand neil and i want to thank you to continue the incentive that they have to invest right thank god for being with you thanks for being with us tonight in my opinion it's time to end corporate welfare through big pharmaceutical patent laws and if. the money changers out of our temple of health care in the united states are. in other news warrior against women rush limbaugh is still can't shake his slut gate controversy or do a new bloomberg poll a majority of americans aren't satisfied with russia's apology or the exodus of advertisers from his radio show they want to see a rush but can't it be three percent of americans who are rush fired even within the republican party for which he is the unofficial mouth piece one third of respondents want rush gone and for republicans who thought that bringing up the contraceptives would win them good favor among voters if iraq rumored also discovered that a whopping seventy seven percent of the nation said the issue of contraceptives
11:38 pm
which republicans brought up when economy started proving a good about him are should not be part of a national debate. so what the republicans do now well they create hughson conspiracy theories i saw who are over a talking points memo points out republicans have turned their conspiracy machine on sandra fluke that woman who got rush in the republican party and all this trouble to begin with among the conspiracy circulated by right wing media look is a secret agent working for the white house and since president obama has ties to georgetown or a flock went to law school he is dead orchestrated the whole thing right so what's with the republican party and conspiracy theories from birth there is to claims that the president is a secret muslim allegations that the president is cooking the books when it comes to unemployment numbers why do republicans demand depend so much on conspiracy theories here to share his take with that with us on that is progressive commentator and international media star sam sex well yeah you are welcome to say i
11:39 pm
don't think so ok so i find this absolutely fascinating the this latest conspiracy theory about sandra fluke. tell me some of the gist of it well it's been about a week for about a few weeks for republicans who figured it be a good idea to change the subject from the economy to contraceptives and the voice of their party it backfired on him so now they have to quickly change it and make it all obama's fault so they point out that it's center is a student at georgetown law school and john podesta who headed to president obama's transition team and now works for the center for american progress happen to be a professor at georgetown university to this as this is called eight thousand people or more and also he probably left before she came in so who knows who knows but they went to the you know they belong to the same school so immediately this is a conspiracy she is a plant belonging to the obama administration but really this isn't anything new
11:40 pm
this is the same type of the republicans have been playing since president obama looked like he was going to win the presidency three years ago younger so. we've we've had these and i find it amazing. one of our regular conservative guests constantly says they're cooking the books on the numbers another conspiracy theory that the president is actually a muslim a plurality of voters in alabama and mississippi believe that the republican primary voters in one polls yesterday they believe that the president is not a christian with sixteen percent because of course these are two pretty outlandish claims the thing about this and what makes this different than in the past there's always been conspiracy theories out there about present especially about presidents . what makes this different is that you have the top cable news outlet in the country. yes giving credence to these conspiracy theories there's a whole system in place where there starts in the blogs you know it starts when someone like you breitbart says he has
11:41 pm
a video that's going to completely derail president obama's reelection campaign and once it gets out there you know it's over for the president turns out it's a video from one thousand nine hundred one of a young brock obama defending a professor he had it had been part of a documentary from frontline p.b.s. in two thousand and eight but you know since the professor was like a certain irony that you had to be a radical this proves that the president's right on it starts there it goes the other media other blogs and then finally gets picked it up at fox and then suddenly c.n.n. and misunderstood all the other places that the care you can shout at you know it's of hours or so in the minute we have left you've been dumpster diving today looking at republican conspiracy theories what are some of the wackiest ones i did i get a lot of these from my mom too she a friend sent her e-mail she's like is this true and i don't even know how to respond or like what point to respond things like obama was indorsed by the klu klux klan i mean where do you start to to we've got obama's campaign responded by hugo chavez of us all yeah but you know actually there was
11:42 pm
a bet as well and once one of the voting machines the number six six six won the lottery in illinois the day after the election that actually that one is true so i don't really know what is true so we might be two and we might you have any other where we've got the book of revelations describe someone matching barack obama as the anti-christ you know we've heard a lot about the president being. there so others that you. you know i mean there's a whole obama to take away your guns gun rights of expanded into the present and they come on amtrak trains you can take them in a public place raise taxes i've heard the right wing over and over again say he's raised taxes he's president obama actually did the largest middle class tax cut in the history of the nation rick is the one that raised the radio exactly he's i want to raise that the biggest tax increase on working people in history and better yet sam thanks a lot. i'm tired of all the right wing conspiracy is here's an easy solution turn off our so-called news and delete those forward emails. coming up in tonight's daily take i'll explain why we needed three wall street like they're producing
11:43 pm
potentially deadly drugs. if we just put a picture of me when i was like nine years old like that you know lived through. i think the second i am going to get a sense that i love rap and hip hop is that i'm pretty. happy was kind of the jester thing. i'm very proud of the world without which i'm sure it's played.
11:44 pm
you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so for like sleep you think you understand it and then you live something else here's to some other part of it and realize that everything you thought you knew you don't know i'm sorry welcome to the big picture.
11:45 pm
here take my take is your chance to send in your questions comments rants and observations about anything we talk about here on the big picture or during my radio show our first comments i got some anonymous caller our viewer rant why he had this to say about our segment last night about religion infiltrating america's public schools. common joy your show it's right on so many subjects however i have to take issue with you on the christian movement in the public schools it is a good thing especially with. all the more relatives of our society at least that's one thing that is positive however they do go about it in some kill your ways it is
11:46 pm
constructive for kids especially with so many a two parent working so forth keep up the good work but i think that religion does have a role to play in this in many people's lives and for many people it's a positive role but the argument that religion is necessary for morality that we get our morality from religion is belied by the facts humans have been on this planet pradhan sixty five thousand years and we've always had morality every tribal tribal people all over the world have never heard of any of the organized religions that we know understand reality and it's wired into our d.n.a. i don't think that we need to have cults going into our schools our current kids before we get back i don't think we should before we get to our final comment and i remember we broadcast over half a billion homes over two hundred countries around the world and we all want to get over a hundred countries around which is what we all want to hear from all of you that's why we created our big picture world map we want to get
11:47 pm
a comment from every country in the world and tonight we're able to put a big picture flag on our neighbors to the south mexico juana in meridian mexico had this to say. hello tom and louise yes i've been watching and listening to our brains t.v. and radio show on r t and i tunes for years in the u.s. and i watch from rita mexico i'm here for health reasons because i cannot afford health care in the u.s. i'm trying to live on six hundred dollars a month back home one major illness would have bankrupted me here in mexico i've seen several eminently qualified doctors and gotten excellent care some doctors even make house calls shows are my lifeline to my country as a tom and others i've become a news junkie watching the news and us politics is like watching an impending train wreck it's horrible and we're getting at the same time you're right and thank you for your comments and it is horrible and riveting to watch some of the news and to watch the the republican party increasingly coming out saying as the party of no is the party of nothing and democrats abroad to social security and medicare and
11:48 pm
unemployment insurance the forty hour work week and workman's comp and and the list goes on and on and on you know the food and drug administration we need inspections and food and start and what do the republicans brings when you think of anything one thing but the republican party brought us. crickets right something the needs to be pointed out more and more often. just. the. it's the good the bad in the very very cold cough asli ugly good the u.s. sent despite big oil's chance of drill baby drill the senate yesterday rejected an
11:49 pm
amendment that would have opened up the arctic national wildlife refuge and other protected areas to oil drilling the amendment was to be attached to a bill currently under consideration that funds transportation projects nationwide given the news last week that the us has more oil than we know what to do with there's no reason to be destroying more land just to serve the interests of big oil it's nice to see washington stand up to corporate greed for once the bad u.s. senator mitch mcconnell in a heated debate yesterday over the filibuster in a seventeen judicial nominees noncontroversial ones senate minority leader mitch mcconnell admitted that while it's unlikely that any of the nominees would not be confirmed it was they'd all get through these filibustering them anyway because senate majority leader harry reid made him look bad so basically mcconnell is playing crybaby and holding the confirmation process process hostage to get back at the evil senator reid just when you thought politics in washington couldn't get any more trouble and the very very ugly taps taps of the texas association
11:50 pm
of private and parochial schools with a lot of his association insisting primarily private christian schools if you jewish schools recently private muslim schools in texas asked to join the association and the muslim schools were subjected to a series of ignorant and hateful questions one it one question asked whether the schools wanted to terminate the infidels another asked why muslims can down other religions this is part of a larger attack on islam in this country fueled by ignorance and intolerance and it was very clear. we don't trust pharmaceutical companies to make a new drug and then immediately toss it on the shelves to sell the american people we saw them do that one hundred years ago and it killed
11:51 pm
a lot of people which led to the creation the food and drug administration make sure our drugs are safe before they get to us we make them jump through hoops and wait years to get approval for new medicines that's because a new drug can crash our bodies for example from eight hundred ninety eight to nine hundred ten bear market a brand new and wonderful cough syrup its brand name heroin really so now we make sure drugs are safe before they're sold to the public but what about things they can crash our entire nation like the derivatives that reagan c f t c had wendy gramm allowed enron to start inventing back in one thousand nine hundred two after having been prohibited since nine hundred thirty five and five weeks before she resigned her post and took a multi-million dollar gig as a director a member the board of directors of enron. why is it that ever since then we've trusted wall street to make any new exotic punish the instrument they want without any oversight think about it for a second if i have a drug company and i'm manufacturing
11:52 pm
a new cancer drug it's going to take years to prove that drug is safe before it's let loose in the market first there's the preclinical phase in which the drug is tested in laboratories and on animals to determine the biological effects of it it takes about two years and if all goes well the drug companies have to apply to the f.d.a. to begin the next phase which includes testing the new drug on healthy volunteers to determine just how safe it is and what the correct dosage is should be i takes another year roughly seventy percent of all new drugs make it past the space on thirty percent or you know fall through can do it after that they move on to evaluating the effectiveness of the drug and determine its side effects that's done by testing patients who need the drug this takes another two years and only a third of all new drugs make it past this phase then in the final phase which takes another two years the drug is tested on a larger group of patients to verify the effectiveness and watch out for any adverse consequences of long term use of the drug only twenty seven percent of new drugs and get past this phase after all that the drug companies have to file
11:53 pm
another approval request with the f.d.a. which then my conduct its own investigations or as the drug companies to run more tests overall this process takes between eight and twelve years and then maybe the new drug is approved to be sold to americans but our wall street it's different. on wall street bankers can create came up with a new c.d.o. or credit default swap or some other crazy derivative and immediately start pushing it on their customers whether it's good for you or for greece or for spain and then there's not one study done or one testing phase performed to determine just how risky this new financial product is not only to investors but to an entire nation's economy as a whole it takes at least eight years eight long years for a new cancer drug to be approved but there's not even a process anymore since the reagan bush deregulation for new derivatives and you proved some banks are dreams that up and the next day it's on the market so why do
11:54 pm
we have so much trust in wall street bankers to do this especially now remember this guy babbitt was fab for greece to re a bank story goldman sachs was grilled last year by a senate subcommittee investigating the financial meltdown fab and other bank stories came up with a new financial product called timberwolf and sold it to investors all the while acknowledging to themselves that timberwolf was well what senator carl levin described. six hundred million dollars of timberwolf securities which you sold. for you sold this is what your sales team were telling to each other. that timberwolf was one do you can you imagine if a drug company was caught circulating e-mails before putting a new drug on the market saying boy is drugs really crowding out might kill whoever takes that what suckers but will make a larger body you see we have laws in place to make sure the drug companies can't
11:55 pm
do that. but there is no us to stop wall street and just today we heard even more reason why we should be keeping wall street on the same kind of short leash we keep the drug companies former goldman sachs executive director greg smith recently resigned from that banking giant and today in a new york times op ed he blew the whistle on a toxic and destructive his words environment within the bank smith writes i believe i have worked here long enough to understand the trajectory of its culture its people and its identity and i can honestly say that the environment now is as toxic and destructive as i have ever seen it smith went on to write that banks of the firm callously rip their clients off and routinely refer to their customers as muppets were shocking smith reveals that the most common question he got from fellow banks. was how much money did we make off that client the sad part is bankers like goldman sachs now make up more than a fifth of our economy when they used to make up about it and one fifth of all the money in the united states comes from banks toure's on wall street using unapproved
11:56 pm
and often dangerous financial instruments that suck money out of the rest of the economy and what made the bankers into literally billionaires they prey on other americans from gambling on food no oil prices to scamming their customers with exploding mortgages and overdraft fees to crashing and i are national economies and they were a pharmaceutical company maybe a slim poison. this is where financialization for the empowerment of wall street has gotten us a crashed economy and a culture of greed that is unaccountable to the american people back in the day drug companies used to operate in a wild west of quack doctors traveling from town to town scamming people into buying their medicines and got sick guy and hurt the market by sucking out all the trust in medicine so the government stepped in to regulate it right now wall street operates in a wild west like that too and based on what we've learned about the banks to mentality over the last few years and the unthinkable damage that they've caused to
11:57 pm
tens of millions of americans and billions of other people around the planet it's time to make them play by the rules let's bring back glass steagall and strengthen dodd frank that's it for the big pictures and i was remember my radio show is now on live from three to six pm eastern time on free speech t.v. and radio stations all across the nation and around the world and don't forget democracy begins when you show up it's not enough to just vote you have to participate inform yourself get involved occupy some or get out there go to go to move to amend or democracy for america. p.d. america or progressive democrats of america get out there get to act you show up. your it sort of. led mission free accreditation free comes for charges free.
