4:00 pm
so we know that mitt romney rick santorum they are part of this two man race here for this republican race apparently is going on it is mitt romney tries desperately behind the scenes to end it though wait a minute isn't someone missing from the republican primary coverage and media outlets certainly aren't the only ones pulling the plug on ron paul so why is the establishment so afraid of this star course and how low are they willing to go to kill his campaign and feel like we are living in the words near you government and it's awful because at least in places like the middle east you know they you know the are living in
4:01 pm
a dictatorship you know that you're living in its origin you know like. quick to criticize others and even quicker to arrest its own dissidents the u.s. government sure doesn't practice what it preaches when it comes to the right to assemble we'll show you just how the first amendment as a balance of the muslims. plus twenty two months in jail twenty two charges against him no trial date set and sparse media coverage in the case of private first class bradley manning is on lockdown these days as the alleged wiki leaks or heads to court today why is this case so shrouded in so much secrecy. it's thursday march fifteenth four pm here in washington d.c. i'm liz wall and you're watching our team. well it seems that mass media has officially given up on one republican presidential candidate ron paul who has
4:02 pm
consistently attracted a very passionate and dedicated following reportedly has had only one embedded reporter throughout the entire campaign so far but now he apparently has none because and this n.b.c. poll the soul as bad off the bus this proves that for the mainstream reporters ron paul just isn't worth their time now when you see video of paul he's usually swarmed with his very energized fan base yet he hasn't won a single caucus yet and this has the candidate raising suspicion. as we do the people who seem to get into the polling booth here we will wind up with the caucus . of our supporters are very suspicious that. distro votes have been very confusing i mean you read the paper where the company. you just love to see that you're seven rico these are really just bring these numbers a piece of paper he wrote what if he were to take
4:03 pm
a step to be suspicious. so is there an effort to silence paul and is the candidate not getting a fair shot in the race to be the next republican presidential candidate that a dig deeper into what's really going on here trying to graft down or why a week news dot com joins me now welcome to the show charlie would you say that the media is actively biased against ron paul. well i don't know if that's going to be the largest understatement you need to be but it is certainly a huge understatement to say that there's a bias you know this goes all the way back to iowa was i mean you know when you have the governor terry branstad coming out saying if ron paul wins which it out point it was double digits in poll of polls taken if he wins says the governor ignore it just pretend it didn't happen and focus on who's number two that you know the problem we have in this country you know and one of the reports earlier where the person interviewed said at least in the middle east or wherever she said you
4:04 pm
know that you're under dictatorship the problem is you're weak we pretend like we have what we pretend like we have a choice but we don't have a choice i mean obviously if you covered it or if you seem coverage ron paul if he's caught especially in these caucus states he has so many supporters out there but in most cases they don't have room to put him there waiting outside yet when you know when the votes are tabulated miraculously he comes up short and sort of efforts to silence ron paul is sod all sometimes it's a little bit more play and i don't know if this is a very subtle example take a look at this this ron paul was ranked a high ass and this c.n.n. poll but he's on the bottom there with fifty two percent significantly higher than anybody else but that's on the bottom line else does that ever happen you know this is this is what happens we have a culture look in one nine hundred eighty we had fifty corporations controlling eighty percent of the news in two thousand and twelve it's about
4:05 pm
a handful they control eighty to ninety five percent of the news so it behooves the special interest the media interest in the power lean interest in wall street to not have ron paul be in office or not to have his ideas heard because it would make people think that you know what we've come a long way from a constitutional republic and we've turned into this spreader of democracy around the world and if we got well paul in there he's the old. the candidate the promises to in the corruption so you know it doesn't surprise me anything that comes out as part of the poll or data from other mainstream media you know you have to obviously have to take it with a grain of salt i know stations like r.t. are doing a fair job reporting what's with the situation with ron paul but the mainstream media they've written him off like you said in the b.c. has taken their one in bed so as far as the mainstream concerned it's done and over with ron paul certainly isn't it another example to prove that tell me what is it exactly what is it that they fear about why would there be this advice you have i'm
4:06 pm
glad you asked that is because what they hear what they fear and hold up here this is the constitution of the united states of america sort of really big document because i read it in about a half hour that's what they fear the fear of somebody who wants to return this country to the glory of the once great republic and when you do that you have to start looking at things like monetary policy you have to see looking at things like being the policeman of the world you start looking at things spreading this kind of west that are. the most. the roundups thing people spend a trillion dollars a year to do. no but if you should be. in naturally those who are having a little bit has this document is there
4:07 pm
a number what you get it right no is it wrong. sorry there charlie we're having a little bit of technical difficulties we couldn't hear you quite that well the whole time there but i do want to get to something else earlier we saw ron paul ok well i guess we've charlie mcgrath we are going to try to get him back in a moment for you we were talking about ron paul and why he seems to not get as much coverage as some say he deserves and we're going to try to get charlie back to you in a bed but we're going to move on for now to these so-called war on terror and spreading democracy because of the reasons that the last says it gets involved in conflicts abroad but as the u.s. and its allies criticize other countries for their lack of freedom and human rights it seems those very rights are being threatened here at home the latest example a law recently passed that limits where and how people can exercise their freedom of speech arts he's
4:08 pm
a marine important iowa explains. it's a country that extols the virtues of liberty unlike no other doing ok since september some six thousand seven hundred americans protesting against economic inequality and corporate greed have been arrested and silence. a police offensive aimed at crushing occupy wall street has succeeded in shattering america's globally marketed brand of freedom but it made people realize if they kind of devastating states or our ability to be in a place of dissent in america and how to challenge that it helped press that it and i think people thought they were free or so the sense of greater until they tried. as anger over a corrupt politics fractured communities and u.s. foreign policy grooves federal anti protest laws are also quietly expanding.
4:09 pm
in america it is a criminal offense to exercise freedom of speech and events deemed nationally significant such as presidential conventions and debates. protesting in areas where the u.s. president or anyone protected by the secret service may be visiting is considered a felony punishable with the fines and up to ten years in the federal district of buildings and grounds improvement act known as h r three four seven is a lot most americans don't know about but you don't have to do a lot to feel its force we represent people who are charged with felony offenses solely because they put up posters they put up signs asking people to join in demonstrations and they've been arrested by the police detained held on twenty five thousand dollars bail in terms of phone ins with nato and protest posters popping up nationwide u.s. lawmakers are tightening up recent after many moons include police could be in
4:10 pm
protests around the white house and broader language to make progress and prosecution easier i think this is a specific response to sort of the fear that we are actually going to your active and you know like. transforming the political landscape he davison was arrested twice was here while taking call in legal nonviolent occupy wall street demos in new york a few like we're living in it works in any government and it's awful because at least in places like the middle east you know they you know the early being in a dictatorship you know the early going to you know like here we sort of like wrinkled democratic you know like. words all over everything as if you know like we have all these freedoms that we actually joe the new reality where it's here that just about any american engaging in political protest oh can be prosecuted unsound
4:11 pm
wages are front to civil liberties and the first amendment and. i hope my personal personally have been arrested several times protesting. have been misdemeanors and now would be a felony and i it's just unconscionable that the congress passed this america on its border is legal or it's bickering i want to leave reached consensus when it came to clamping down on constituents only three elected officials voted against expanding federal restrictions on protests while u.s. leaders can't resolve issues like national debt and only use the wrong on the scene each when it comes to how to handle all those citizens flooding the streets to demand change and accountability. r.t. new york. so the long tradition of protesting in america being threatened to help answer this i'm joined now by david seaman journalist and host of the d.l.
4:12 pm
show welcome to the show david so congress has new restrictions on protesting on federal grounds do you see this as a threat to citizens for a right to freedom of speach. i think it is absolutely a threat. this is a sacred protected constitutional right this is not something that should be infringed upon that's why it is in fact the first amendment of the you know our bill of rights it's very important to us it was very important to our founding fathers and just to be clear with your viewers this bill which is now a law because obama has signed it it does not say protest is now legal in the u.s. move along citizen that's not what it says which is part of the reason why it's not getting more attention what it says is actually far more insidious outlaws certain forms of peaceful protests if you happen to be within close proximity to high ranking elected officials who are receiving secret service protection that can be considered a felony and the problem here is if you take away somebodies right to get the
4:13 pm
government's attention that's a really big deal i mean we saw all of the civil rights movement in the sixty's that was something that really emerged because of peaceful protests this is traditionally how american influence policy on the individual level is you go out and you piece would protest for something you believe in if things get bad enough and to take away that right is really quite criminal and it's troubling i mean a.c.l.u. is analysis they're sort of agree with me they're saying that it's an incremental thing that's happening it's not as if some of the protest is illegal everywhere but we should fight this incremental slide because it's extremely dangerous if you can't protest in your own nation's capital what kind of constitutional republic have we become now some are calling best l.b. anthea occupied bell do you think the occupy movement have something to him at this . i think it's all a part of their fears the occupy movement and then you have shadowy groups like
4:14 pm
anonymous which are very hard to track and then on top of that you have the tea party on the right there are a variety of movements something the government is cracking down on all of them and they've also seen what happened in the middle east with the arab spring and they don't want anything similar to happen here the problem is they're actually making this worse you're radicalizing people out there who just you know hear about this on the news and might not really care about occupies message you know that might not interest him interest them their economic message but then when you see that the government is quietly taking away these core constitutional rights you know how the citizens who are upset and actually do have a grievance because they don't want to see those rights go away even if you don't plan on protesting or you like to know that you do have that right so you're saying that this kind of add fuel to the occupy the occupy fire and incite people to get angry protest even more sound i think it does give some added the judge in the sea to some of the peaceful movements out there that there is
4:15 pm
a problem and one of your previous guests was talking about ron paul and how our republic has strayed very far from our founding principles and i think that's something that a lot of people are waking up to and it's something we need to address i mean it could be addressed new legislation to just roll back all of these things we need to get rid of that trespass bill h.r. three forty seven is pretty un-american we need to get rid of. we need to talk about letting the patriot act retire which it was supposed to do these are things that have really destroyed our core rights over the past decade and it's something that we can fix that's the good news but the problem is most people don't know and those who do know don't necessarily care now how would this law a fact protests outside some of the big events that are coming up very damp on nato and the g eight summit there just around the corner. yes so these big events where world leaders come together in one location this can be one of the
4:16 pm
only opportunities for your average person out on the street your average joe or your college student this is one of their only opportunities to grab world leaders attention and to influence their views and if you're suddenly criminalizing protest in these areas then you don't have a feedback mechanism and that's a huge part of our democratic of our democratic system is that you have the right to speak back you have the right to speak out and to take these things away is extremely troubling and i think in the long term will lead to more problems than if they just left these rights in place now the point of the bell somewhat sad that you know in the name of security in the name of safety what do you think about that purpose of this spell. well i think the secret service already exists to protect our elected officials high ranking elected officials in washington and they already have considerable resources i think to take away peaceful protests doesn't make them any safer and also i mean there's
4:17 pm
a chilling effect that's the first problem is that protesters who know that they could face a twenty five thousand dollar bail and they could be charged for a felony they might not come out in protest in the first place so instead of seeing thousands of people you'll see of a dozen protesters the other problem is that you can see selective enforcement where if somebody is in front of the white house and they're supporting president obama's policies on you know whatever on the war in afghanistan or. if there's a group that support of the secret service might turn a blind eye to that but if there's a group that's negative and critical they could crack down and it's really some selective enforcement that could be a big issue because the media will show oh there are protesters but they're actually in support of the president or they're actually in support of this new law but they won't show the other side because those other protesters will be charged now what's interesting about this bell is that congress almost unanimously
4:18 pm
unanimously agreed to let and it's rare that both political parties c.i.i. these days you know during the budget debate and that ceiling debate but a bell like this that has ramifications for citizens fundamental rights it receives bipartisan support why is that. you know it's really it's extremely disturbing and i don't have an answer for you liz. as you said this is been a very partisan congress they can't agree to do anything and yet over the past few months they've rapidly come together and agreed to things like this and protest bill and stunning at times to crack down on internet freedoms we saw sopa and they haven't stopped it's just the media has stopped talking about it mccain has sponsored a bill which would allow the military to have oversight over u.s. civilian internet traffic it seems like over the past few months they've really been hell bent on taking away americans rights and i don't know why that is i don't know why they've come to some sort of agreement over this but there should be far
4:19 pm
more discussion and far more disagreement within the two parties before moving forward and lastly david yes when asked here will this change the way that you protest and exercise your freedom of speech. going to be completely honest with you i think it will if i know that walking out on the street i can face a felony if i'm just holding up a sign and protesting for what i believe in i might stay at home and that's the real problem is that other people are going to think the same thing and after you see the first few arrests college students and mothers and fathers and every day people who don't have the resources or the legal teams to back them up they're just going to stay at home and a major part of our democracy is going to be dead when you don't have the right to protest you don't have much left. hopefully that not that won't happen but thank you so much for coming on the show david for having us all and that was a journalist and host of the d.l. shout they've at c.n.n. from our new york studios. well the army private accused of leaking hundreds of
4:20 pm
thousands of secret military documents appeared in court this morning prosecutors today manning aided be aided al-qaeda by leaking the documents the whistle and website wiki leaks manning faces a slew of charges including aiding the enemy but that enemy was not names until it was hearing now as court sessions are under way some doubt the elected whistleblower stands a chance at a fair trial and some say he was already punished and tortured while he was locked up for over a year awaiting his court date so in such a high profile government case is a fair trial and in military court even possible for manning i discuss this and more i'm joined now by jack has a vent so press liaison for the bradley manning support network welcome to the show exactly so your reaction to what the prosecution said today that bradley manning aided the terrorist group out qaeda by releasing those documents that's
4:21 pm
a very serious allegation there well it's it's one more absurd allegation in a long train of absurdities that have gone on for over two years now as you mention it has taken us about two years to figure out who exactly they meant by the enemy we weren't sure if they meant the week you weeks was the enemy of the american people is the enemy so you know it's an absurd allegation clearly bradley manning was motivated out of a commitment to his country i mean when we look at some of the evidence that the prosecution is trying to submit we can read bradley manning's alleged words saying that he wants people to know the truth and that if the public is not informed about what their government is doing then they're just not able to hold their leaders accountable what do you think about this specific allegation that al qaeda he was helping al qaeda by releasing these documents well you know they can make these claims in go on with this fear mongering as they have been as as much. they want
4:22 pm
but they're entirely baseless and we know that they're baseless because we know for a fact that the government conducted a number of internal impact assessments that found that the wiki leaks materials did not pose any threat to our national security that our troops were never put in harm's way. today in court we spent the greater majority of the day with the defense team really asking pleading with the prosecution to produce these impact assessments and they've gone on again repeatedly claiming that. they've offered a number of actually contradicting allegations but explanations but today saying that basically because it was classified we can't even look at it we can't even answer that question and give it back to you so. it was really making the point today bradley's attorney saying that it appears. by any clear
4:23 pm
assessment of the situation that the defense that the prosecution is basically. sort of deliberately misunderstanding what it means to produce this evidence and so that's why they went ahead and filed a motion today to dismiss all charges with prejudice because it appears that basically that the administration is sort of deliberately not following the rules in this case. now another interesting thing in this case. recently united nations official and that's the gating this case ruled that the u.s. government imposed cruel inhumane treatment against manning so do you think that he's already being punished before even being found guilty well you know it reminds me of growing up in school going to civics class you know you learn these basic concepts that you know trial tends to proceed punishment you know these are basic foundational concepts of you know western law and justice and that's been.
4:24 pm
completely thrown out the window in this case and so. you know it was. important in a very significant now that the united nations officials are formally finding that the obama administration has subjected bradley manning to cruel inhuman and degrading treatment and that's a clear violation of his eighth amendment rights that's a clear violation of articles one in sixteen of the un convention against torture that's a treaty that has been ratified by congress in accordance with the constitution and these really aren't optional standards these are basic rules of the road that the administration needs to play by and if they're not able to do that then they're not qualified to govern now there's been some talk that there is this effort to control the media and this trial facts are reported to the public. and there's been some accusations that the media hasn't really had access to some of these hearings
4:25 pm
are you know it in comparison to some other last high profile case is what from your perspective it would you say that it's hard for the media to accurately report on this case well you know the irony certainly isn't lost on us that we're sitting here in the middle of sunshine we were supposed to be celebrating government openness and transparency and instead we have you know yet another hearing of another you know brutality a tory prosecution of a whistleblower just this week the reporters committee for the freedom of the press submitted a letter to the pentagon and it was signed by over forty six mainstream media organizations saying that they have not had access to basic materials in this case we're talking about things like a court docket to simply explain what's being discussed in court or having access to basic transcripts in addition to the other documents the materials they'd like
4:26 pm
to see. and they set up an interesting comparison in this in this complaint where basically. we're now at a standard where we're a lower standard or sort of more secrecy essentially then what has been allowed even at military tribunals i kuantan i'm obey and so this is really bizarre that you know standards that we think you know we're set for accused terrorists overseas you know now are being applied to our own citizens to a u.s. soldier here on american soil and that's really alarming so you're saying that bradley manning is truly being treated like a terrorist and something worse than one. time and you think that there is an effort to conceal these documents it's obvious i mean it's not only it's not simply you know activists we're talking about here these are mainstream you know organizations and outlets saying that we're not getting the basic access that we ought to have here and it's really it's feeling free debate and free press i mean
4:27 pm
ultimately we need to look back at the constitution back thank you thank you so much sorry but you're running out of time here but thank you very much for keeping us updated and we will of course continue to keep our viewers updated on this case that was sacked hey is a press liaison for the bradley manning support network. well the capital account is up next on our t.v. let's check in with lauren lister to see what is on the agenda today lauren liz i'm sure you know as anyone would that isn't living under a rock and it has any access to the news in the internet that goldman sachs was a huge deal thanks to reeling they appear to be dealing with the stress of the bad p.r. we've seen responses from goldman and from other banks like j.p. morgan also there was that bank of america article format to each use a lot of bad press but do people need to be more worried about the stratus of the actual stress tests and what they didn't show or maybe hiding and the risk that
