11:30 pm
well go back to the big picture i'm tom hartman coming up in this half hour a man with a history of violence against police was legally issued a gun and used it to murder a harmless teen this is allowed to happen in american society also the last chapter in the war on women and women in america charge an extra billion dollars a year in health care costs rise this blatant gender discrimination being protected by republican lawmakers and republican chickenhawk seven you plan to crash our
11:31 pm
economy and send president obama back in tell you what it is in tonight's daily to . in the best of the rest of the news more information continues to come out about what's increasingly looking like the murder of trayvon martin george zimmerman the man who shot and killed martin was issued a permit to carry a concealed weapon in two thousand and five despite having been previously arrested for resisting arrest and for battery of a police officer and former florida senator the relevant adan a man who introduced florida's shoot first law that's at the center of this tragedy told c.b.s. news that even he thought zimmerman should be arrested for shooting shooting martin baden said that the law does not protect neighborhood watch members who feel like they have the authority to pursue and confront people as one witness said last
11:32 pm
night on c.n.n. police didn't suspect zimmerman of any wrongdoing at all at the scene of the crime . what was your impression of the police's attitude toward theirs the view they were neighbors and. was there and i hear what makes you say that. i guess just their. attitude since this koch brothers alec indoors to n.r.a. inspired what was signed by jeb bush the justifiable homicide rate in florida has more than tripled so isn't it time we rethink these infamous license to kill laws so that we can prevent more murders and better yet should we be asking ourselves how on earth a man who was previously arrested for violence and battery against pick up was able to get a gun at all joining me now to discuss the case is josh more wittes executive director the national coalition of stop gun violence and john mann welly and in los angeles
11:33 pm
a pro n.r.a. criminal defense attorney welcome to both of you thanks thanks for joining us john let me start with you in your opinion from what you've learned so far in this case the george zimmerman murder trial trayvon martin now the factual question tom it's really hard to say at this point because there's an investigation that's currently pending all the facts aren't in so it's really hard for me to formulate. that hypothesis at this point in time however at some point in time there's going to be a decision to be made whether or not he did commit the crime and that's all it is is probable cause to make an arrest and then from there there may be a judicial process but who knows at this point any idea why he hasn't been at least arrested why the why the body of the young man the to the trial that was drug tested now it all tested but mr zimmerman wasn't. i do have an idea my understanding is based on what the neighbor of neighbors in the neighborhood was saying was that there was a string of burglaries in that neighborhood
11:34 pm
a total of fifteen burglaries in eight months in that neighborhood and the majority of the demographic of the burglars or legit burglars were of african-american descent so it goes to the mindset of mr zimmerman again we've got to go inside that cube that little matrix that mr zimmerman was and apply the same facts to him as but as he would and some of us n.b.c. fact checked that and it appears that in the last year and a half two bicycles have been stolen and one gas range and that's it and there were a couple or more it's like again i don't i don't know exactly what the fact. that people were you know casing people's houses and that's that's a business this is a gated community a largely white gated community these these typically are not places where you have waves of cry. well tell you all of this neighborhood and community are coming back in and backing more zimmerman again i don't have the facts but you know as the
11:35 pm
constitution says we are all innocent until proven guilty at this point in time i don't even think there is enough to make. an arrest as a suspect to a crime the facts are just not there for an arrest at this point in time it may be as the investigation keeps going but at this point in time it's really not enough to make the charges stick josh you point out your article are mean zimmerman that before the stand your ground laws were a shoot first lar license to kill or wherever you want to call it passed in florida in two thousand and five there were forty three cases of justifiable homicide in that state and by two thousand and nine the number of jumps to one hundred five. doesn't this law do more to incite violence than it does to restrict it this law makes a lot easier to kill people and i think before two thousand and five this would be a clear case of murder right because at that point before two thousand and five you duty to retreat it wasn't a good thing to go into though your brother's blood right that's that's part of the problem here so before before that we had to do the common law of duty was to try to retreat in public situations here you don't have to do that and in and so what
11:36 pm
that's allowed us to do is get into a situation we shouldn't be in in the first place use deadly force we shouldn't and then get away with it and that's it's really a problem and we should this is a law that needs to be needs to be gotten rid of jon these these laws were apparently first written by the n.r.a. and then and then went to an alec meeting american legislative exchange council were robbie assists and largely republican legislators sit side by side and come up with rust interviews in the states in two thousand and five it was approved by alec and then went out to the states sixteen states now i guess have adopted this. how does this benefit the public i get you know how the n.r.a. you know it's there they're all about let's sell more guns but how does this benefit the public. well first of all to answer that question you have to understand that our founding fathers put that into the second amendment for a reason and it was a one of our mints that would be fought tooth and nail to get that in to make sure that it goes in perpetuity and it never and it's never to be changed and for us to
11:37 pm
use this aberration of of a case to undo the second amendment disturbs me as an attorney and as a libertarian because this is a fundamental right that we all have and that is the public good to answer question we have a right to defend ourselves what are we going to do next if there's another black swan event or if there's some sort of civil unrest or perhaps maybe our economy goes down the toilet tank and we turn into another athens who's going to protect our homes one nine one one doesn't answer in athens by our people are those are another bronzed and so people are being shot and apropos of the second amendment go back and read the debates and when they were writing the constitution the second amendment was originally a ban on standing armies during times of peace that was what jefferson was pushing for that was that that's what is in shrine in the constitution of pennsylvania and that ban on standing armies that during times of peace use the army would be only available during time of war or will be drawn from a local militia jumping josh got thirty seconds to the supreme court it's really
11:38 pm
clear you have a right to bear arms if the right to defend yourself in your home going out in going out there would see can somebody get into a confrontation has nothing to do with the second amendment the supreme court has said about eight hundred percent agree to that's the reason and that's the reason it should have been changed because this has nothing to do with so i'm going to go back to what we had before is this this this law goes way beyond what the second woman ever intended the second member has to do with a militia here ok josh john thank you both thank you both for being with us thank you both trayvon martin's death is a tragedy we don't have to let him die in vain it's time we stop a needless crime that plagues america's streets and act tougher gun control legislation that would vent deaths like trayvon is forever. women are screwed and i'm not just talking about the republican war against women's contraceptive rights a new report from the national women's law center reveals that health insurance
11:39 pm
companies are charging women in america an extra billion dollars annually and it's just good old fashioned gender discrimination the report finds that the practice of for profit health insurers charging women more than men for functionally identical coverage is widespread and states are doing little to stop this report in states that don't ban gender health insurance gender discrimination ninety two percent of the best selling plans charge women more than men again they charge women roughly a billion dollars more than men so how is this blatant discrimination allowed to continue sam bennett joins me now she's president c.e.o. of the she should run foundation sam great to have you with us pleasure thank you for joining us what what is going on here give me a snapshot of what you said ali well the argument that i hear from conservatives is women can get pregnant men can't pay i don't see is expensive but some of the examples time there is gender discrimination let's say as much as twelve hundred
11:40 pm
dollars a year between a forty year old woman a four year old man in an instance where the coverage doesn't even cover maternity care yikes that's what's going on here so is it like just we can get away with it we can get away with it what will the market bear and so the thing that's so important about the fordable care act that obama passed is that it's a limb an eight that discrimination it says women must have maternity care and women must be charts the same as men now let's think about what the what we want in this country do we want to have healthy children do we want to have prenatal care and we want the mothers to be taking care of welfare call ryan the answer is. no no no and so when we think about some of the insanity that's going on right now. it's bad for the long term health of the nation and when i see states passing legislation these these this intrusive these unnecessary expensive ultrasounds and it's the same folks proposing that legislation that are pushing back on women even
11:41 pm
having maternity care pushing back on women not being charged more than men and there's the same people who don't want to take care of the children when they're born what on earth is going on it's crazy that's a that's a legitimate question let me let me just ask you that what is this massaging is this fear of women is this a desire by a small group of men to put women back in their place i mean are they trying to roll this back to be four hundred twenty i think what i like to call this is the parable of the boiling frog you throw the frog in a boiling pot of water the frog jumps out you throw the frog in the cold pot of water time you heat it up over time the frog allows itself to be boiled to death quite frankly i think we have to look as women at a situation where we've allowed our rights to be eroded over time the hyde amendment and others and there's a true systemic cost for this time we're going to and you've heard me say this in numerable times we're going to ninety seventh in the world the number of women in elected office we're behind cuba we're behind afghanistan you know what's happening
11:42 pm
right now in the republican party seventy percent of congress is women but only three percent of republican women the republican party has gone so far off the rails why that mournful tradition of a moderate republican woman like a limp you snow she's she's leaving why she's fed up there's no room for moderates and i think that the lack of women in the republican party is a very systemic cause of what we're experiencing right now and the lack of women in politics in general in this country is the very root systemic cause to what we're dealing with right now so while americans sit around and very sanctimoniously talk about we need to be building schools for girls in afghanistan we're just of our and women right here that's right it's an absolute you get back to sam really i always advise analysis thanks so much so much for dropping. coming up what's the latest right wing ploy to crash the economy and take over the white house i'll tell you and tonight's feeling take.
11:43 pm
we just put a picture of me when i was like nine years old i couldn't tell the truth. i confess and i am going to get a friend that i love crab because he's sick and. he was kind of a jester. i'm very proud of the role that out you'll see it's play. live. you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so poorly sleek you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else you hear or see some other part of it and realized
11:44 pm
everything you saw you don't know i'm sorry welcome to the big picture. for.
11:45 pm
your take is your chance to send in your questions comments rants and observations about anything we talk about here on the big picture in my radio show our first comments and i comes to us our viewer rant line from a viewer in lakeport california he had this to say about the rhetoric of the republican party i want to where the right can have an argument where they always have to you know i check whether we've got the screen right now we have. i mean they have will be played out if he is talk to me and it gathers behind a couple kitchen taps take care because that's the plant you're critical of because you are there trying to do is but you should be then for the fascist to control. a few ronald reagan here's the
11:46 pm
essential problem the republicans face and paul ryan i think is a great example of this is a great face for it and it is that they are the party and they have been since one thousand eight hundred seventy s. eight hundred eighty s. made it hundred seventy in the mid eighty's when they were taken over by big corporations they're the party that represents the interests of big corporations and multi millionaires and billionaires period now you can't get elected just based on that so they reach you know that's maybe one percent of the american population so then they reached out and they said well let's bring in some fundamentalist christians are still there for five ten percent and let's bring in a few people who love guns and freaked out about crime and then it was bring in a you know some try to get the military in here and then well let's try to bill is try to bring in some some races to vote i mean this is a big deal right when we l.b.j. signed the voting rights act the civil rights act and nixon says oh a southern strategy here we go and so they've they've piled all this kind of stack
11:47 pm
on but they can't really be honest about any of those specific agendas because they largely all horrified the general american public particularly that one percent agenda so they have to do all these little song and dance about other things and that's why you don't hear straight talk republican party our final comment of the night comes from a viewer in dover delaware who called in to our viewer rant line here's what he had to say about the tragic case of trayvon martin florida's so-called stand your ground law as i call it shoot first laws and gun violence in america. two what's wrong with the course is to put this into law to realize the florida flu really is no different than texans take you have to even for some ask questions later so the service will look truly for is did george is running around looking for him everywhere along with their black full human soul you can simply kill if feel better about it so this is for the concert the liberation of small curtains
11:48 pm
people a concealed weapon millimeter weapons ship from all the city if you want to hurt your long rifle you go up the woods and you know you don't be hurt in the inner city every few feel that clark is that bad become a policeman don't kill innocent little teenage boys with dangerous pegs or skills take as absolutely brilliant you know if you're going to hunt don't hunt the city what would you spot on and i would add to that if if trayvon martin instead of being seventeen year old young african-american had been a seventeen year old white girl this george zimmerman george would have been in jail instantly there would have been any debate about it i mean just think about that for a minute if that had been the case and that should tell you everything about the

problem that we have in the united states republicans and conservatives are we're past race we don't need affirmative action a more there's no more racism in america cannot take a look at our nation take a look at what's happening this is it in our face when you do something. that's it for your take my take tonight if you like your comments or questions heard this segment of the big picture listen up we want to know your take send us your comments by visiting the tom hartman facebook page by a twitter at tom underscore hartman or in the chat room on the message boards or through the blog at thom hartmann dot com you can also leave a message on our rant line at two two five three six fifty three zero six agree disagree sound off its all welcome remember that your comments may be used on the ear. to. help it's the good the bad in the very. really honestly ugly but good

elaine johnson johnson a second grade teacher in sacramento california is truly devoted to her job of teaching and caring for young children earlier this week she took a passion for helping kids to a heroic new level that was seen a car erupt into flames in the school parking lot johnson rushed to the burning vehicle where she helped to rescue a young boy and girl who were trapped in a most teachers may never rescue their students from burning cars all across this nation teachers like ms johnson go above and beyond the call of duty every day when it comes to helping our children frankly it's time we warn them for their passion and do more to fund those who are molding the future of america the bad minnesota republican republicans the minnesota house of representatives helped pass a voter id measure today that would require voters to show government issued id at the polls when they vote voter id laws are popping up all over the nation as conservatives try to disenfranchise millions of american citizens those hurt most
11:51 pm
by the laws such as the elderly the poor and minority voters tend to vote for a more progressive candidate so basically voter id laws allow conservatives to play pick and choose with the american electorate i guess preventing millions of americans from being able to vote is one way to regain. and the very very ugly fox so-called news pack so-called news has created an audience filled with a racist a trip after an article about the trayvon martin death was posted on the fox so-called news website a flurry of comments began to pop up and most were marked by racism and intolerance one comment read this could have had a tragic outcome zimmerman's gun could jam. another comment read i'm just glad zimmerman didn't miss and hit an innocent bystander and quote and let me stress those are two of the wilder comments that goes bad enough to spew missing information twenty four hours a day to turn people into racists and bigots who openly spread offensive and

hateful comments about keeping a smile that is very very. so guess what's the latest right wing ploy to crash the economy just before the election war with iran on tuesday international monetary fund chief christine legarde warned of it a bill a terry strike on iran could disrupt oil supplies all around the world causing the price of oil to spike thirty percent the guard said clearly it would be a shock to economies if there was a major shortage of exports of oil out of iran a sudden and brutal rise in the price of oil would have serious consequences on the global economy. right now is the life blood of our economy all the economic
11:53 pm
production from our food is grown to our products are manufactured our pharmaceuticals are made our buildings and infrastructure are constructed our workers get to and from their jobs how we power our homes it nearly all depends on oil currently brant crude prices are about one hundred twenty three dollars a barrel a thirty percent increase would push the price to well over one hundred sixty dollars a barrel that's where that's higher than where the price of oil peaked in two thousand and eight at one hundred forty seven dollars a barrel just months before the entire global economy when to full meltdown as economists jura germy rifkin pointed out the price of oil is directly related to the stability of the global economy and a hundred forty seven a barrel people stop by because all the supply chain is too expensive and the entire economic engine of the industrial revolution shut down in july of two thousand and eight that was the great economic earthquake of the second industrial revolution the collapse of the financial markets sixty days later it was the
11:54 pm
aftershock we now know the outer limits of how far we've globalized this world based on the leap fossil fuels it's about one hundred fifty a barrel and it'll shut down so war with iran would push the price of oil above bad critical hundred fifty dollars mark forcing the global economy to shut down and plunging the united states into a great depression and if it happens before the election and you can kiss president obama's second term goodbye which might explain why political operatives in the republican party and fox so-called news are pushing so hard to force the president to launch military strikes on iran or push israel to do it for us. all the serious observers looking at the iranian situation including two former heads of israeli intelligence and all eighteen u.s. intelligence agencies say iran is definitely not building a nuke and now the head of the i.m.f. says military strikes against iran are not only unnecessary but would have
11:55 pm
disastrous economic consequences people living in iran and israel are now talking on facebook to network with each other and building a campaign for peace in the hopes of their leaders won't take them to work the fact is there's not a single real shred of evidence that iran is building a nuclear weapon or that iran even if it builds upon would suddenly turn suicidal and use that weapon in fact all one hundred percent of the american intelligence agencies say just the opposite that this is not a crisis so what is the raw the problem the republicans are in such a hurry to fix by bombing iran oh yeah that guy problem is president obama having high favorable numbers going into an election in november the last five times that all prices have spiked just before an election one hundred seventy six one thousand nine hundred ninety two two thousand two thousand and eight h. time the party that held the white house and was running for reelection the last

eight years election jerry ford jimmy carter george herbert bush al gore and and john mccain each one's party had the white house when oil prices spiked as we went into the november election and each one lost in large part because of it's a war when our war in iran now would make it a six time. normally a u.s. president gets political benefit from going to war especially before an election that george w. bush told his biographer mickey herskowitz back in one thousand nine hundred nine that if he was elected in two thousand he was going to start a war with iraq to get an off his phrase political capital to privatized social security and handed off the wall street and have a successful presidency but in this case a war with iran would be a catastrophe and a president obama gives in to the right wingers who are using our national security as an excuse to get into a war that will bring about another great depression in this country and he will have made one of the all time dumbest and most destructive blunders in american

history we can't afford or the ram and political propagandists like mitt romney and rick santorum say we can it demonstrates that their allegiance is not to the security the united states of america but instead of their own political ambitions and a billionaire campaign donors who've been trying to get president obama out of office for more than three years would republicans really try to start a war with iran just to crash the u.s. economy so that obama would lose this election year you betcha that's the big picture for tonight for more information on the stories we covered visit our website so target dot com free speech dot org dot com also check out our two you tube channels there are links over time are also time harben dot com check out all the different ways you can send us your feedback and don't forget the democracy begins when you show up when you go to a meeting for progressive democrats of america or you show up at the bar proceed for america get out there and get active tag you're it occupy so we'll see you.
