information covertly so is it new york's finest a muslim community isn't alone in it getting a second glance turns out all spare in counterterrorism and most new yorkers are giving the thumbs up to the. well it's monday march twenty sixth my name's christine you're watching our team. well president obama spent the weekend in south korea and while there he had a meeting with russian president dmitry medvedev yet tensions between the two countries have been a bit high lately between the difference of opinion regarding syria and of course those strong clashes over missile defense the two leaders clearly do have loss to discuss but it appears president obama wants to wait a bit before dealing with those issues here he is with medvedev and it looks like the two man i had hopes their conversation might be kept a little more under wraps hoops their microphones were turned on take

a listen. thank you all right so an acknowledgement here that should the president when the election which he seems to expect will happen and then they can really get down to business even letterman is a writer and host of the per breath of radio news hour hour he's in chicago and joins me to talk more about this let's talk about first some of these issues between the u.s. and russia if president obama wins a second term what do you think this flexibility that he's asking for you know what do you think working things out will actually mean. overseeing i think it's more it's you know what actually will employ them up close ability america's systematically whether it's george bush or rivalry bill clinton

america is this america. makes russia knows this china knows this the so-called reset. under. the reset never really reset probably in mid live knows of course who knows. election rolls eyes claim or obama claims well you know you had an election you have a new man coming you know we had all the action you november i hope to be hussein in spain you know but the idea of close ability i think it's nonsense kristie well some people are saying that you know should obama when it will mean you know critics of the president saying it will most likely mean more hostility towards israel and also regarding russia more accommodation to vladimir putin's russia what do you think about that. well the american media bashes knowledge you know that

you're right you see what happens here television media oh they have really roughed him up last this is and maybe they like a little bit better but we're concerned about it coming in because he's got more backbone to stand up he would lose your edge i can hardly wait for him to take a look kristie. it should be very interesting i wake up about microphones not in turn as you probably recall our t.v. was probably recalled the most famous incident back in the 1980's was when ronald reagan even though the microphone was still on he talked about wanting russia but. you know i guess what do you think i mean do you think that these guys really didn't know that their mice were turned on probably they didn't know somebody slipped up and say somebody messing up on the teleprompter is it right you know they are chanting i think there'd be

a little bit more circumspect. if they find the whole world was listening and have a very often happens every now and then i was going to say that is not the first time it happened as not the first time it happened even with president obama when it was not a quick reminder of another incident like that. and barack obama and nicolas sarkozy are now being quoted from a conversation they had about israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu the exchange was overheard at the g. twenty summit sarkozy reportedly said of netanyahu quote i can't stand him anymore he's eve liar president obama then responded you may be sick of him but me i have to deal with him every day journalists who overheard the remarks at first agreed not to repeat them but the comments were published in israeli newspapers so certainly as we remember those comments had a little bit of fallout attached to them do you what do you think about these these comments between obama and medvedev i mean what's really the result of us well the

results because you know it's you know i think. is really so good that america and america is good as it is real to some here really with leaders so you don't want to share it with leaders i think he said it was remote show where. there's not the usual christine it was the o.c. to what extent will you go on with a warrant if i'm also use real good words good sort of what's really. if there isn't the only one is if you want if you to. use it begs the most. part it was an agenda so you can say things that leave you but. all it is. is except it will be real person who could be a hundred percent just most of it is real all of the lives. well just to connect

prevent it and just lay down a red light and say this line or be crossed a little we are no risk being obama professes to one peaceful resolution in syria he goes along suppose we will be another plan for peace negotiations the non-binding presidential statement from the security council was passed but i wrote an article about it called a worrisome because it says if assad doesn't go out with further measures will help him unspecified very very worrisome. but but what's concerning his spear obama is saying one thing and she's doing it the other headlines today obama is the i want you and lethal aid to syria's opposition what is include include communication equipment communications and well coordinated attacks to check with

the with the. internally in in washington to write so washington so washington obama saying one thing to him no stay. in saudi arabia interest in jordan with israel. well i went with the opposition. all right well we will of course keep our eyes especially specifically on the relationship between the u.s. and russia certainly an interesting exchange over the weekend between the two leaders the london writer and host of the progressive radio news hour. also new research is out that showing that last year two thousand and eleven was in many ways the year of the hacktivists according to the study put together by a security team for a rise in one hundred million users saw their data compromised and although the percentage is small a large quantity of those stolen records was taken by hacktivist groups like anonymous and wolf such as opposed to just individual hackers now the government is

of course all over this trying to crack the codes of the code crackers and you might remember earlier this month some of the leaders of lulz sec were arrested largely thanks to one of its former leaders turned f.b.i. informant i guess but there's a whole lot of talk that he was arrested actually had little effect especially in light of a video that came out last weekend that announced that little sect is still very much alive and kickin it so they plan to sail toward the into rabid once again much to the dismay of what they call a corrupt government here is we do have a part of that video announcement they also i think their supporters and you know go on to the end of a lot of music but i think we have heard about a video to show you. it's ridiculous. if you have. you haven't.

seen some of the. corporations. all right and as you know any videos put out by anonymous or. actually show people because most of the people affiliated with these movements want to remain anonymous the f.b.i. is how did it the investigation and especially the arrests as a major victory for them getting some of the best known hackers in this time we want to talk a lot more about this for now a short break. but . we'll get the real headlines with. the problem with the mainstream media today is that they're completely disconnected from the viewers and what actually matters to those viewers and so that's why young people don't watch t.v. if they want to go online and read it and we're trying to take those stories that

people actually care about and transfer them back to. our state run english speaking russian channel it's kind of like. russia today has an extremely confrontational stance when it comes to us. well obesity has long been a major problem for many children across america and while quite a few people us spend their time looking for solutions the government has now been accused of turning a blind eye to a trend that's causing diabetes and heart disease but it does spell profit for

overweight in this country one in five four year olds are over are obese actually which is astounding and the fact that congress. is not willing to change the food policy in our school cafeterias to benefit the health of our children is really appalling granted issues such as proper control and obesity are not new problems for america but over the years a hunger for profits has compromised the health of an entire generation the u.s. apartment of the friends says twenty five percent of young americans are too overweight to join the military and the damage so bad that supports a threats to national security. our short but quite totally unscientific poll found americans picking logic over the world of their lawmakers look like pizza. it doesn't work it's made it.

really true to its story surface that's. not just what like this much made of beer at all that's what. that's what the nutritional value in that. period whatever it is i don't but whatever they're feeding in churning it just terrible knowing that u.s. leaders have a hand in cooking of being greedy and can also leave a bad taste in many mouths. are to new york certainly interesting on where you live here in washington you know there are so many factors of people connected with lobbyists and those in congress and unfortunately that is oftentimes the way the solutions are made here in the red back.

process and i am going to get a sense that. is that. that is kind of the just today. i'm very proud of the role that i can see its place. so we were talking a little bit earlier in the show how it twenty eleven was in many ways the year of the hacktivist how so many people hundred million users actually had their information hacked into in some form and well these have to do is to groups like second anonymous really only made up a small percentage they made up of a large quantity in terms of the amount of documents they were able to get their hands on and it turns out to even though the f.b.i.

sort of touted the arrests of many members of the group. that will say it is in fact coming back and they have something planned for it well first of this year so we want to talk about several different aspects of what's going on with cyber security with the hacktivist groups and so i want to bring in greg house an internet activist and also the c.e.o. of a local s.a.e. company and greg let's first talk about what we saw in a new study that came out of the one hundred seventy seven million records stolen by hack hackers over the last year one hundred million were taken by have to this and then these numbers don't include the takedown of the web site that we've seen quite frequently this year everyone from the motion picture association of america to department of justice what should be gleaned from these numbers. well the numbers are quite large book but one thing that i take away from these numbers is that there is no security out there that all these attacks are happening and it

seems to be that in five minutes any of these economic this although we have to you know hard core hackers can get into anything that's what i take away from it i know another group was attacked by anonymous recently that this is the vatican website including recently some of the web sites in mexico now from what i understand the pope just visited one of the a city with ninety four percent roman catholic population anonymous seems to be angry about all the money spent on the pope that they say should have been spent on the poor people in that country it was also a protest against the national action party in light of elections be ending their talk about this isn't just hackers as you say there's little think curity and that's becoming proven but with the hacktivist movement it's hackers with a message people that want to get messages across what you think that means who wins out and who loses out when we have this happen well you know i'll speak to the idea that hacktivism is is

a far more political speech here you know when you look at what's actually going on and he went on what i'll call the site of the site can bring up a point and i do you know you know the fact that fifty million dollars was spent on the pope's visit. it's kind of bad when you're talking about all the people that are starving and looking for food and you know home and shelter and it's that money should have been spent to help the people so the people in anonymous the people in those security those types can go to the press and talk about it and it doesn't get reported then they go and happen website i do a denial of service and everything they wanted to say gets said and that seems to be the point here a lot of the activism is that it's the only way to get the real news they want to actually be talked about and i know a business insider just actually came out with an article they filed a freedom of information request and got some information they discovered that the department of homeland security has actually been tracking the occupy wall street movement even long before it ever started and that

a big reason for that was the involvement of anonymous in helping to organize these protests i'm wondering first of all how much of a role do you think anonymous has played in occupy wall street and to what extent do you think movements like this will actually make them vulnerable to government involvement. they played a pretty big you know when you look at adbusters first putting out the call for this protest in wall street there was a march pick up very few news organizations actually covered it and then someone on this found it and the second anonymous decided to talk about it everyone in the news out there decided oh this is news we have to cover it and thousands of people showed up you know i think anonymous played an interesting role almost as the p.r. agent for it you know they brought a lot of the eyeballs and in the end they also played a very technical role you know just just in the boston want to loan it but i went down to and i had a part in they helped get the internet open operational they made sure that there was electricity provided you know they did

a lot of interesting technical stuff that the movie needed but what about you know people who are associated and affiliated with anonymous i mean i think it seems to me that one of the plans by some of these government agencies seems to be you know send people undercover try to get them involved with groups like anonymous so they can learn more and sort of i guess crack their code. absolutely you know one of the things you have to assume if you go on to either interact with or just observe or not amisse and any of their you know their chat systems like the i or see charts and they use is that is reste one person in every big channel it's not multiple people on those channels are federal agents either from our government or european governments or asian governments you know who knows where they happen to be from. there's going to be one there watching and blocking everything that gets so you just have to assume because it's the fact i want to go back to something that you said earlier about security in this country and how really nothing is secure any longer but

a big announcement just came down from microsoft in the last couple days apparently they've been working together with a couple other organizations as well as u.s. marshals and they were able to disrupt the zeus bot net system now this is a large network of infected computers that had credit card information and other personal data of the servers that linked back to offices in pennsylvania and illinois. so this is a big announcement a big victory for microsoft it could prevent millions of people from having their information stolen but some people are saying you know what these people with microsoft in the u.s. marshals are the same people who are spying on you now they're simply using those by capabilities to get the bad guys to greg what's your take on all of this. it's an interesting one you know it's some point it feels really weird commending microsoft on something you know they've always been sort of i won't say the enemy but on the other side of a lot of these arguments but the work they're doing there really needs to be done it needs to be done on a far greater scale are getting rid of

a lot of these bot nets but i think the one thing everyone is missing is the fact that they need to be attacking us more at home i mean these talking heads are made up of windows machines because windows is so unbelievably unsecured you know we wouldn't have as big a republican if they cared much about the security of their own operating systems so we have that to go on and one of the other more interesting things you find out talking in these more security related kind of chat channels where all these people really care about this type of stuff is a lot of them would love just once to go up against a website that they were trying to get the data from and not be able to get in just for once to see that some security measures were actually taken that there's someone competent on what you might call the other side of this. it's probably just a i mean i think it's a really good point because when you look at some of the we were going through for a while i know that anonymous at least had a program that every friday if you were sort of attacking different government websites seven major web sites and the fact that they can get into you know the nasa website the department of homeland security these are places where you think

they'd have some of the best of the best working and i mean what do you think it says that they're not able to deal with combat and on. it's worse than you think in fact that's all that was used to get into those sites was an automated tool that anyone in the security field can buy for cheap we're talking under two hundred dollars with lifetime updates that's all you pointed at a website and wait until it gets you in so you could have actually done this hack i just visiting this web site and downloading bestowal it's that easy and what it says is that they're not doing the amount of work they need to do on their security you know some very very simple security measures would have stopped most of those hacks what's the likelihood greg this real briefly of anonymous actually being kind of their network sort of being dismantled by the government eventually it's just not case is not a capability they have a network doesn't really exist all right so many chat networks well we do
