well back to the big picture i'm tom hartman coming up in this half hour house republicans pass a three month extension of millions of americans on a job refused to fund the full transportation and why are conservatives so opposed to mass transit and to ensuring the safety and security of our national infrastructure also thinks the time has been all over the news lately more and more food stores are moving hamburger full of us on their shelves every day needed a stream conservative groups are still standing up for the mystery meat lobby and internets daily take rick santorum takes homophobia to new extremes but couldn't he
11:31 pm
because he's unsure of his own sexuality. the best of the rest of the news two weeks ago such as the two year funding extension for critical transportation and infrastructure programs that would keep millions of americans on the job working senate bill passed in a bipartisan seventy four to twenty two vote sinks in a compromise is a bad word of the house of representatives and conservative republicans the tea party has refused to even vote on the senate bill and said they wanted far more right wing bills that included a bunch of sweeteners to boost profits for big oil so as speaker of the house john boehner struggled trying to gain control the tea party wing of his own caucus and he or. the tea party caucus within the republican party the deadline for passing a transportation. bonding bill was fast approaching with the program is set to
11:32 pm
expire this weekend running up against the deadline today was republicans passed a short three month extension of the crucial funding before leaving town that means rather than passing the bipartisan senate bill that would have ended the debate and kept the millions of americans safe in their jobs republicans just kick the can down the road so that three months from now they can have this debate all over again and hold millions of transportation workers hostage again to push their extremist today agenda so what do today's events mean for working people around america and to our crumbling transportation infrastructure here to talk about that is at ed wiccan the president of transportation trey's department of the a.f.l.-cio welcome thanks for having me thanks for joining us republicans kick the can down the road why what's going on that's a good question for a generation we've seen transportation bills passed with overwhelming votes on both sides of the aisle because everyone wants to get to work on time everyone wants clean air with all the congestion and choke points on the highways everyone wants
11:33 pm
mass transit system to get them to work and for some reason in this congress this is the first time ever they want to use the highway transit bill as a sort of like a street grab bag literally the first time the first time in a long time i've been working on this this bill in particular a long time and i can think back to even during the game which years in the house some of the darkest years for a country they were able to pass a highway transit bill here is this crowd can't do it because they loaded it up with too many goodies for for private interests that are represented on k. street and as a result they couldn't get the votes to pass a bill to get loaded up in the senate i mean number they're going to the house house version in the house like they've been able to move a bill the senate passed an incredibly good strong bipartisan bill it funds a program even a slightly above baseline levels and it shores up some serious mass transit problems in this country one of the stories that's not being told in america is that now. transit systems are facing
11:34 pm
a huge growth in demand but service and jobs because they don't have the resources to deal with with with the rise you know demand and this bill fixes that by giving them some flexibility in how they spend their money to keep trains running it's a big deal yeah it is a big deal what what kind of. what kind of america what kind of function how can how can business even function without a transportation fast which i don't understand the logic of these guys what's interesting about it is that even the chamber of commerce is completely on board trying to pass a long term bill and the a.f.l.-cio in our organization which is part of the a.f.l.-cio has been working with the business community trying to pass a strong bill look everyone wants a good transportation system in this country it's the extreme forces in the so you've got to be so you've got the tea party factions to completely hold the mystical hostage ok and they're largely the creation of the koch brothers and dick armey you know the billionaires in the multimillionaire pastry lobbyist what agenda
11:35 pm
could they possibly have to to i just don't get it i we don't get it either because the agenda really is about they don't want to spend any money you know people ask me this question all the time is it too much money you know it's just money they don't want to spend money on the needs of our country if you think about it this way it's one thing to have a debate in washington about some pork barrel item talk to a bill late at night it's another thing to talk about investment that sometimes these investments last fifty sixty seventy five years old we should invest in a country we need to build things we're just one hundred years later we have seventy thousand structurally deficient bridges in this country and for those who care two hundred ten million trips are taking over this bridge in one hundred two largest metro areas in america every day and we saw you doing now he was saying at all what happens literally fell down yeah and kill thirty five people the right problem is this is the kind of problem we're facing so. my my recollection is we have a two trillion dollar infrastructure deficit in the united states between transportation
11:36 pm
and water septic and and electric grids and that's just to get us to stay so it's just to a stable point and then it may not meanwhile germany just just you know they're investing eight percent of their g.d.p. in you know a new smart grid the countries are investing in look at china is doing china jihads is just a high speed rail. that's the equivalent of chicago to new york yeah i mean they have they have actually is where all they do is try to figure out how to make the trains go faster in china. and we have the trains now we don't talk about we'll make an amtrak run on a shoestring budget you wonder why you know we can't can't succeed at the level that it should is because we starve it and ask it to do great things so we're completely mr wrecked in this country and and this sort of right wing agenda in the house has now captured transportation up until this point they really didn't go after trans tears because they realize it was a bipartisan issue it is are over up until now they were more focused on health. right but. this is truly remarkable what kind of investment i mean i
11:37 pm
identified the two hundred twenty or the ten trillion dollars what percentage of that right this bill address or does it address not it's just well the senate bill is strong because it keeps the program flush for about two years one hundred nine billion dollars almost two million jobs supported by that bill the president has a half a trillion dollars. for him for sure he's the first president in modern history at least since the one nine hundred fifty s. when we built a highway interstate highway system who's got a plan to literally spend more money than we've ever spent to finally build the transportation system mr ready for this economy and we need to do what obama wants to do which is put the money to work and under his program six seven million americans will go to work which in this economy could sure use it if you could think of thanks like europe but most recently. from gang government to hostage government house republicans have made the one hundred twelfth congress one of the least productive and by far the most unpopular in the history of america and in november they'll be asking move voters to keep them in the majority so if you think
11:38 pm
of one good reason why we the people should abide i can't. over the past couple of weeks pink slime has been all the rage pink slime is that so-called meat filler that's made from portions of col meat that aren't even good enough for dogs and let's not forget these pieces of meat are often filled with dangerous bacteria so they have to be washed down with ammonium hydroxide the same chemical found in common floor cleaners in light of the recent revelations over the less than healthy pinks line food stores and restaurants across the nation pulled it from their shelves and their menus however conservative lobbying groups like the national media argue there's nothing wrong with that chili pink stuff there's just this whole there's regular meat and one of the biggest producers and supporters of pink slime is the beef there is a company called beef products incorporated headed up by old in raw and was a major donor to none other than mitt romney in fact romney has collected nearly two hundred thousand bucks in the big slime industry joining me now to debate the
11:39 pm
merits of pink slime and why mitt romney wants us all to eat it is david solid conservative commentator and pro-business advocate david welcome back thanks for having me tom as always it's a pleasure thank you david why do you hate say food a little and i don't hate seafood the fact of the matter this. the actual product isn't discussed thing it's the unappetising sobriquet pink slime that's so disgusting but it's very subjective you know like think of pickled pigs' feet ok way down in dixieland they love it but jewish people and muslims would find that same products unappetizing but if you've ever ate one or been around anybody eating pickle pig's feet you know that people there's actually some meat there that people erode and then they're left with the gristle pink slime is the gristle it's the stuff that you can't you couldn't chew if it wasn't sliced and diced down to the

level of of almost molecular you know they grind it so finely because there's no possible way you can cure it. you know it's amazing even with what you just said assuming that's correct the u.s.d.a. went ahead and they put their imprimatur on that and you know i remember when the president sort of weaseled his way around the senate during recess so we could point out elizabeth hagen to be the nation's top food safety post she was regulating meat poultry and all these other tasty morsels where she in all of this you know the president i think it's an awful lot of people to the u.s.d.a. and that was the u.s.d.a. civil rights initiative there was some high profile lesbians there was very qualified. other individuals and not one of them said anything you know they should really resign if this is so bad did i have them the pink menace this was actually

brought to us courtesy of a woman by the name of joanne smith who was appointed by george herbert walker bush and in the last hours of the george h.w. bush administration as undersecretary of the u.s.d.a. authorize the government to start iraq for office authorized the need companies to start calling what used to be called gristle only useful for dog food or words to that effect start calling this finely ground beef and thus we got pink slime and then she went just a matter of few weeks later i'm sorry i don't have an exact number here but she went to work for beef products inc the company that i just mentioned that you know is giving money to the romney campaign we're just manufacturing slime and she's made over a million bucks there i mean isn't it but i got to tell you tom or her george h. bush has been out of office for a long time george w. bush has been out of office for such a long time and the obama administration couldn't right back wrong never mind the
11:42 pm
unemployment and underemployment ok never mind the fact that we're being overrun by illegal aliens and all the other problems that we're likely. well they're going to seriously dealing with that any day you know brock obama has some most of them with a drone never mind any of those things they couldn't stop they even call the obama administration has has it this is the guy who killed osama bin ladin you're saying you're trying to implies i'm going to secure muslim number one number two there's been more doing these things i have my doubts all you did but i will say if you allow this to continue in other words pointing the blame where it doesn't belong and accepting this sort of malarkey and i would remind your viewing audience that because of this i believe something like six hundred fifty people have been the lead off and these aren't those millionaires or billionaires that you're always railing going to these people may seem surprising people from some jobs are going to have a greater got check to support their family for a day when they go on the dole watch television he very much for being with us that
11:43 pm
i do pay fines a lot some it's always a pleasure thanks from pink slime to pink balls coming up in tonight's gailey take why does rick santorum hate paint balls and what might his severe case of trouble call be a really tell us. if we just put a picture of me when i was like nine years old and to tell the truth. i mean i am going to get a sense that i love rap and hip hop music and pretty. she was kind of yesterday. i'm very proud of the rule that out she has played.

you stay classy planet earth. it's thursday since i've heard the science let's get geek casting you know that spice that gives indian curry its kick it's called tumor and inside tumor it is this amazing bioactive compound called kirk human for centuries of human has been used in both medicine to treat actions wounds and other health problems it's even been shown to help treat long and breast cancers but now researchers at michigan state university have found the kirk human is also able to prevent the destructive formation in the brain of alpha sin sin nuclei in proteins which show up but apparently cause many neurodegenerative diseases like parkinson's and alzheimer's
11:48 pm
team of researchers led by the sirah model found that the alpha synuclein proteins are the cause of clumping or aggregation which is the first step in your degenerative diseases or to liesl pettus and associate professor of physics and astronomy at m.s. you research shows that the kirk human binds to the alpha synuclein proteins and prevents them from clumping at body temperatures and another key part of the research that the team conducted was showing how proteins are built a process called folding the team of researchers was able to shed some light on folding by the chairman in the speed at which proteins fold and their tendency to clump together with other proteins when procurement attaches to alpha synuclein proteins it stops them from clumping it also raises the proteins folding rate by increasing the folding rate cumin allows the protein to avoid clumping with other proteins occur cumulus really promising for the treatment of alzheimer's and parkinson's to america's most common diseases well put is quick to point out that

her kimmons usefulness as an actual drug may. the limited since it doesn't go into the brain easily where this misfolded of proteins is taking place other researchers however found that by simply adding up or tumor it there cumin becomes a vastly more bio of my all available just like tim curry the fact that a spice that has been around for centuries and is a staple of our entire diet could help in preventing to debilitate into the deadly diseases is remarkable so the next time you complain about how spicy indian food is just remember it might be helping you live a longer and healthier life. just. the. it's the good the bad in the very very end a pig raffle is the way ugly they're good jim yong kim in an op ed in thursday's

financial times the u.s. domini the world bank president wrote that he would aim to lift the poorest people of the world out of poverty by promoting economic growth and poor and developing countries he also said that it's clear that we can eradicate global poverty and achieve in our lifetimes but for generations has been a distant dream and of course over three billion people in the world live on less than two dollars per day the eradicating poverty in our lifetimes may seem like a lofty goal it's time we work to eliminate the wealth gap that exists in society who goes to mr kim for looking out for the most vulnerable citizens of our planet the bad. bank of america c.e.o. brian moynihan one hand was given a seven point five million dollars pay package for last year from eleven six times as much as in twenty ten he didn't mind he got this enormous payoff while the company's stock was tumbling and losing its status as the largest bank in the

country oh and let's not forget according to whistleblowers one hand is the head of a bank intentionally blocking troubled homeowners from getting mortgages eight bank of america was also hit last year charges that discriminated against minorities in its lending practices so what happens when you're the c.e.o. of one of the most corrupt corporations in american history if you get millions and millions of dollars something very wrong with that picture and a very very ugly supreme court justice antonin scalia during yesterday's final day of oral arguments over obamacare soleus seemed a mate someone would expect him and the rest of the court to read over the entire text of the head. carol law and referred to that as a cruel and unusual punishment his deputy solicitor general and would need were followed by justice scalia. just to answer a question that that several justices have asked we think that suburb illinois is a matter of statutory interpretation it should be resolved by looking at the

structure and the text of the act and the court may look at legislative history to figure out what the text and structure mean with respect to severability we don't even know what happened to the eighth amendment you really want to still go through these two thousand seven hundred pages. one. and two you really expect a court. do you expect astute to give this a function to warm your clerks if it is this not totally unrealistic they were going to go through this dispute item by item and decide each one after all he's a king right basically the conservative king of the court is too lazy to read through one of the most important and groundbreaking laws and there is three feet of fifty three million uninsured americans now rests in the hands of the supreme court justices and say are too lazy to give a lot of consideration needs that very very.

rick santorum did it again this time letting his homophobia loose to ruin a perfectly good bowling match according to a reuters reporter who was on the scene santorum made a campaign stop at a wisconsin bowling alley on wednesday where he chastised a young boy for using a pink bowling ball as reporter sam youngman relayed the conversation santorum said to the young boy you're going to use the paint ball we're not going to let you do that now i'm here mara friends don't let friends use being. i think we actually have a photo of that kind of thing all here on a friends don't let friends use after all if a young boy ends up using a pink bowling ball of that age they may grow up and end up doing something like this with the same pink ball rumor has it that the paint ball went on to marry a dog after the bowling match and while friends don't let friends use pink balls
11:54 pm
friends do let friends wear pink ties the human rights campaign jumped on scene in terms of the latest homophobic rant by releasing a statement saying this is another example of rick santorum intentionally making ignorant statements that have a real impact on l.g.b. people kids have enough to worry about it don't mean rick santorum telling them that using a pink bowling ball is a bad thing so from comparing same sex relationships to sodomy and says to saying that any don't ask don't tell amounts to social experimentation in our military so now telling little kids they can't use bowling balls rick santorum is proving himself to be the ultimate wolf according to science i will not only have a tendency to be obsessed with gays in public they're also usually obsessed with gays in private something to think about as rick santorum takes his anti-gay tour around the nation as actress
