decade before turning their gaze to mars. also they have here in our team now the ups and downs in russia u.s. relations and their effects on the world are under scrutiny in our special interview we talked of barack obama's former national security adviser. general james jones thank you for taking time to come first of course former security advisor national security advisor to president obama two thousand and twenty. i'd like to start with what you think the top priority in terms of u.s. russia global security are let's focus on cooperation from i think. the russia u.s. bilateral relationship is one of the most important relationships on the planet. i was. of all the things i was privileged to be able to do in the white house i
2:32 am
think working on the so-called famous reset of the relationship was one of the most satisfying it was manifest by the personal relationship of our two presidents from day one and it resulted in that spirit of working together and developing trust and confidence that resulted in the start training. and i think resulted in. the two countries looking at the same problem through a much more common blandness than perhaps ever before so it's not only very important i think it's crucial certainly in the signing of the new start treaty and in twenty ten was hailed as a tremendous step in the reset but a lot of people now are wary that progress is being halted by differences on missile defense how do you see that moving forward well i think missile defense at least a night of you know and my discussions with my russian counterparts. in which
2:33 am
we made some concessions i mean one of the things that i really thought was successful is that early on we sat together with our counterparts my national security advisor counterparts and said what is a bit really bothers you about what we're planning to do and two thousand and nine been hurting the bush administration's plan. and they told us and we looked at it and we said you know that kind of makes sense for i were if i was sitting there i might say the same thing and so we changed that and then we made it much more open we made it. much more communal in the sense that some point if russia one of the participated in russia could and to me that's the. that's the value of it. there are people though who are still living in another century in a cold war the kind of things you know well the pound side it's really us and the
2:34 am
russians against but that's not the case i don't believe that's the case i don't know anybody who is serious a serious thinker and my former profession which is a military that sees russia as an enemy. we think that it's a lot better for russia and the united states to find a common ground and missile defense and one of those areas where we should work very hard with the rest of the europeans. to find a solution but with goodwill trust and confidence and knowing each other better. i'm a big believer in the military of military training and participation so the young leaders today in uniform will grow old together and at the end of the day when they have to talk to each other on telephone there will always be there. we can bridge a lot of those gaps and we must leave the twentieth century to rest in peace as we
2:35 am
move forward in this very complex twenty first century to do things together and with with all of the cooperation they are talking about why do you think the u.s. has been reluctant to give russia written guarantees that any kind of system in eastern europe would not be. immense against them why would they put it on paper i don't know. that we would or that we wouldn't get are not part of those negotiations so i can tell you certainly that's one of the main. i mean concerns for russia well in terms of missile defense i don't think among friends and. trusted allies nothing should be insurmountable unless it's you know. it's something that is fundamentally against the security of each individual nation which nobody wants to see happen but i think we've come such
2:36 am
a we need to think that we reflect a little bit on how far we've come since january of two thousand. and i was i was really proud of the very encouraged by that and i hope to. the extent that it might be somewhat off track right now but also we both have two national elections we're both. going through the throes of the n. word focus when you have a national election we come out of both of those elections my guess is that the world will get back on the track of. doing to do the things we're doing with a year ago one of the big platforms speaking of elections especially in the u.s. is iran and you mentioned how far russia in the u.s. have worked together really to make progress on that but lately we've been hearing a lot of rhetoric in terms of iran not necessarily from the white house or found it ministration but certainly there's a lot of talk about the threat of iran but threat and how real is the threat
2:37 am
as you say i think that. you know iran does represent in their subject matter where the u.s. and russia work very very well together. and i thought russia did some great things by canceling the sale of the us three hundreds have been on the stage for. so many many instances of being sensitive to russian concerns and sharing vital information. so that we were able to get come to a point where we really had a pretty good understanding of what the threat was in terms of the the iranian nuclear program hell long we had before it became a real threat and how we could work together to mitigate that threat somewhat. so i think. if we look at iran today you look at its behavior. to me it's
2:38 am
a it's a sign of a regime that is really feeling the pinch a little bit of the global isolation of some of the things that russia and america agreed on just a few years ago. the russian support for the sanctions regime was vital. it's clear that. inside iran there was inflation high prices that they're feeling that economic squeeze on the diplomatic isolation. i don't know if that's going to change their behavior but it's interesting that they've now talking about rejoining the talks with the i.a.e.a. i think that's positive. and and so i i think that the policies that we work together on two years ago are now showing some possible fruit in terms of the behavior of the i say. i know how the president
2:39 am
how strongly the president feels about this relationship with regard to iran and similarly with. with israel that we are working very closely with them to make sure that there is an persepolis action that would may not be justified in terms of where we think the nuclear program. we get to these positions by working together we get to be solutions and by trusting each other we get the best for those wins by sharing information and i think iran is one area where we've done some very good work just finally on the wrong there are experts and within the i.a.e.a. as well who say that the threat the nuclear threat first of all iran is not exactly what it's played up to be outside of iran one and two that if they abide by the law that iran should have a right to
2:40 am
a nuclear program how then to be moved forward without encouraging double standards we have always said. that iran. should have access to peaceful nuclear power if they wish and we've offered to replace the fuel and it's a medical reactors in toronto. so it's not an issue as to whether a country like iran or any other country if it wishes to have peaceful use of nuclear power there ought to be a way that can be provided having said that iran has also been cleared rather openly would we do if it became a nuclear power i beez or be one of its neighbors in the region. those words have to be listened through a little bit and they have to if iran seriously wants to. play according to the game but play part of the rules that all of us play by. sign the documents that
2:41 am
guarantee a certain behavior. there's no reason the iran cannot have nuclear power nuclear power for peaceful use so you know that to me the the the pressure and the responsibility this is not upon russia or the united states to. make iran do anything but it doesn't want to do it's up to iran to say you know we want to be like north korea ten years from now living in a world of isolation that's a great civilization great people we happen to know that the iranian people want more freedom they look upon the west as i and countries outside their borders as well as inspirations and ways in which they and see the freedom of our societies and they want to live like that. they're going to have to figure out how they get a little bit more but as far as the nuclear question i think that the both of our countries have sent signals to iran that there was there was

coach of the female team wolfgang pickler was appointed last year by billionaire me prokhorov he was the president of the russian by our own federation and the new man didn't pull any punches and he spoke with our teams which he found perfect. in and that can work for us we have come through a lot. only two years before. we are from meeting a really important meeting we have to train travel structure we have to work really finally for us or tree we have to make it straight we have one of so be. it from russia sports but a lot of money pulls lifted right goes north from there are on the right direction i think. you know it's like with the problems with success for instance and says. we are not really on like talking about sports in general do you think this is the main problem in sports in general in russia the fact that it hasn't modernized it

a lottery look at today almost. always a little more probably but thrown your. dislike in a school if you're good for it and then you're it's easier for you to make it you have to prepare the team really good and then if they have four formidable candidate from every race and if so good political can say. every race. can be no matter. if so for. some grapes and smoke coming from but you have so much for the good. because both of you can get. some interesting views now we have got time to end with some action from the n.b.a. where the los angeles clippers held on for one hundred points in ninety eight victory over oklahoma city thunder and that keeps them in line for home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs while the clippers needed the win to hang on to fourth place in the western conference standings but the first half was
2:56 am
all about kevin durant as he was scoring one three pointer are for another and led oklahoma with twenty two points oklahoma were forty eight fifty five up at half time when the second half was signed release came back with good work from blake griffin notably a nice write and it's from him. and chris paul came up big in the fourth quarter as he has all season he scored eleven points in the final period including a game winning shot as the clippers pulled ahead after trailing most of the way and won the match one hundred points tonight. so that's all sports and all i thought.
