russian scientists plan a foothold on the moon by establishing a permanent base within the next decade before turning their gaze to mars. now the ups and downs in the russian u.s. relations and their effects on the world are under scrutiny in our special interview we talked about obama's former national security adviser. general james jones thank you for taking time to face of course former security advisor national security advisor to president obama from two thousand and nine twenty ten. i'd like to start with what you think the top priorities in terms of u.s. russia global security are let's focus on cooperation from. i think. russia us by lateral relationship. one of the most important relationships on the part of . of all the things i was purged to be able to do in the white house
4:32 am
i think working on the so-called famous reset of the relationship was one of the most satisfying it was manifest by the personal relationship of our two presidents from day one and resulted in that spirit of working together and developing trust and confidence that resulted in the start treaty. and i think resulted in. two countries looking at the same problem through a much more common blandness and perhaps ever before so it's not only very important i think it's crucial certainly the signing of the new start treaty in twenty ten was hailed as a tremendous step in the reset but a lot of people now are wary that progress is being halted by differences on missile defense how do you see that moving forward well i think missile defense at least in my view and in my discussions with my russian counterparts. in
4:33 am
which we've made some concessions i mean one of the things that i really thought was successful is that early on. we sat together with our counterparts my national security advisor counterparts and said what is it that really bothers you about what we're planning to do and two thousand and nine inheriting the bush administration's plan and they told us and we look at it we said you know that kind of makes sense for our if i was sitting there i might say the same thing and so we changed it and and we made it much more open we've made it. much more communal in the sense that that some point if russia wanted to participate and russia could and to me that's the. that's the value of it. there are people though who are still living in another century in a cold war the kind of things you know what need down inside it's really us and the
4:34 am
russians the guns but that's not the case i don't believe that's the case i don't know anybody who is serious a serious thinker and my former profession which is the military that think that sees russia as an enemy. we think that it's a lot better for russia and the united states to find a common ground and missile defense is one of those areas where we should work very hard with the rest of the europeans. to find a solution but with goodwill trust and confidence and knowing each other better. i'm a big believer in the military to military training and participation so the young leaders today in uniform will grow old together and at the end of the day when they apply to the throne telephone going to always be there. we can bridge a lot of those gaps and we must leave the twentieth century to rest in peace as we
4:35 am
move forward in this very complex twenty first century of the things together with with all of the cooperation they are talking about why do you think the u.s. has been reluctant to give russia written guarantees that any kind of system in eastern europe would not be. immense against that why won't they put it on paper i don't know. that we would or that we would meet that is are not part of those negotiations so i can tell you certainly that's one of the main. the main concerns for russia. in terms of miss out to fans i don't think among friends and. trusted allies nothing should be insurmountable unless it's. something that is fundamentally against the security of each individual nation which nobody wants to see happen but i think we've come such
4:36 am
a we need to think that we reflect a little bit on how far we've come since january of two thousand. and i would i was really proud of that very encouraged by that and i hope that it could be examined that it might be somewhat off track right now but also we both have two national elections we're both. going through the throes of the inward focus when you have a national election. we come out of both of those elections my guess is that the world will get back on the track of. doing the good things we're doing just that you're one of the big platforms speaking of elections especially in the u.s. is iran and you mentioned how far rests on the u.s. have worked together really to make progress on that but lately we've been hearing a lot of rhetoric in terms of iran not necessarily from the white house or fund it ministration but certainly there's a lot of talk about the threat of iran what pret and how real is the threat
4:37 am
as you see it i think that. you know iran does represent a. subject matter where the u.s. and russia work very very well together. and i thought russia did some great things by canceling the sale of those three hundreds. of states. with so many many instances of being sensitive to russian concerns and sharing vital information. so that we were able to get come to a point where we really had a pretty good understanding of what the threat was in terms of the of the iranian nuclear program held on we had before it became a real threat and how we could work together to mitigate that threat somewhat. so i think. if we look at iran today you look at its behavior. to me it's that
4:38 am
it's a sign of a regime that is really feeling the pinch a little bit of global isolation of some of the things that russia and america agreed on just a few years ago. the russian support for the sanctions regime was vital. it's clear that. inside iran there was inflation high prices that they're feeling that economic squeeze on the diplomatic isolation. i don't know if that's going to change their behavior but it's interesting that they've now talking about rejoining the talks with the i i think that's positive. and and so i i think the policies that we work together on two years ago are now showing some possible fruit in terms of the behavior of the i think.
4:39 am
i know how the president how strongly the president feels about this relationship with regard to iran some and some really with. with israel we are working very closely with them to make sure that there isn't a precipitous action that would. be justified in terms of where we think the nuclear program has. we get to these positions by working together we get to these positions by trusting each other we get to these are the sins by sharing information and i think iran is one area where we've done some very good work just finally on the wrong there are experts and within the i.a.e.a. as well who say that the threat the nuclear threat first of all iran is not exactly what it's played up to be outside of iran one and two that if they abide by the law that iran said have
4:40 am
a right to you and your clear program how then do we move forward without encouraging double standards we have always said. that iran. should have access to peaceful nuclear power if they wish and we've offered to replace the fuel in its medical reactor and sort of into iran. so it's not an issue with the whether a country like iran or any other country if it wishes to have peaceful use of nuclear power there ought to be a way with that can be provided having said that iran has also. rather openly what it would do if it became a nuclear power would be easier be one of its neighbors in the region. so those words have to be listened through a little bit and they have to if iran seriously wants through him. play according to the game play board of the rules that all of us play by and sign the documents
4:41 am
that. guarantee a certain behavior. there's no reason the iran could not have nuclear power and nuclear power for peaceful use so you know that to me the the the pressure and the responsibility this is not upon russia or the united states to to. make iran do anything but it doesn't want to do it's up to around and say you know we want to be like north korea ten years from now living in a world of isolation that's a great civilization great people we happen to know that the iranian people want more freedom they look upon the west and countries outside their borders as as inspirations and ways in which they see the freedom of our societies and they want to live like that. they're going to have to figure out how they get that a little bit more but as far as the nuclear question i think that the both of our

countries have sent signals to iran that there is there was a perfectly reasonable pathway that preserves their dignity and their respect to get to a peaceful use of nuclear power so it really is up to them general james jones for the national security adviser to president obama thank you very much. her her. mother. her. mother. knew

world rankings the move puts pick up because men just about dropped out of the top ten most current world and european how this plane is still untouchable at the top there in germany are right behind with europe wise cracking the top three for the first time in their history i mean philanthropic one place to seven yes yes and i think any manager added this summer's european championships in poland and ukraine . and other news russian women's water polo to secure their place at the london olympics but face stiff opposition at next week's qualifying event in a city that seeing how the final training camp in the moscow region ahead of its own which starts on sunday nine countries will secure the top four places which guarantee qualification for this summer's games alexander a couple of things will take on heavy weights hungry and it's late i spy this pain in the group stage sports minister the quietly confident russian taking will be going to london. the come on but usually i think the team has

a great chance to qualify for the olympics i believe in our plays and know what they're capable of and certainly we can expect some good results from them in the future. the whole training structure for russia's biathletes needs to be modernized ahead of the olympics in two years' time the warning has come from the new coach of the female team wolfgang pickler he was appointed last year by billionaire prokhorov who reached the president of the russian biathlon federation and a new man didn't pull any punches and he spoke with our team's richard downpour flicked. but there can work for us but we have to do a lot we're only two years before. we're from eating a really important we have to change our structure we have to work really finally for sorcery we have to make it straight away we have one of the beak. from russia
