a foothold on the moon. base within the next decade before turning their attention to. the ups and downs in u.s. relations and. on the world now under scrutiny in a special interview we talked to former national security advisor and that chat right now. general james earl jones thank you for taking time to sit down with us of course former security advisor national security advisor to president obama in two thousand and nine twenty ten. i'd like to start with what you think the top priorities in terms of u.s. russia global security are let's focus on cooperation sourced i think. the russia u.s.
6:32 am
bilateral relationship is one of the most important relationships on the planet. and i was of all the things i was personally to be able to do in the white house i think working on the so-called famous reset of the relationship was one of the most satisfying it was manifest by the personal relationship of our two presidents from day one and resulted in that spirit of working together and developing trust and confidence that resulted in the start treaty. and i think resulted in. the two countries looking at the same problem through a much more common blandness than perhaps ever before so it's not only very important i think it's crucial certainly the signing of the new start treaty and twenty ten was hailed as the tremendous step in the reset but a lot of people now are wary that progress is being halted by differences on
6:33 am
missile defense how do you see that moving forward well i think missile defense at least in my view and in my discussions with my russian counterparts. in which we've made some concessions i mean one of the things that i really thought was successful is that early on. we sat together with our counterparts my national security advisor counterparts and said what is it that really bothers you about what we're planning to do with two thousand and nine inheriting the bush administration's plan and they told us and we looked at it we said you know that kind of makes sense for i were if i was sitting there i might say the same thing and so we changed it and then we made it much more open we made it. much more communal in the sense that at some point if russia wanted to participate in it russia could and to me that's the. that's the value of it.
6:34 am
there are people though who are still living in another century in a cold war that kind of think you know what deep down inside it's really us and the russians are guns but that's not the case i don't believe that's the case and i don't know anybody who is serious a serious thinker and my former profession which is a military that sees russia as an enemy. we think that it's a lot better for russia and the united states to find the common ground and missile defense is one of those areas where we should work very hard with the rest of the europeans. to find a solution with goodwill with trust and confidence and know each other better. i'm a big believer in the military to military training and participation so the young leaders today in uniform will grow old together. and at the end of the day when
6:35 am
they have their part in the throne telephone there will always be other. we can bridge a lot of those gaps and we must leave the twentieth century to rest in peace as we move forward in this very complex twenty first century to do things together and we believe all of the cooperation they are talking about why do you think the u.s. has been reluctant to give russia written guarantees that any kind of system in eastern europe would not be. meant against that why won't they put it on paper i don't know. that we would or that we wouldn't because i'm not part of those negotiations so i can tell you certainly that's one of the main. the main concerns for russia. in terms of miss out with us i don't think among friends and. trusted allies nothing should be insurmountable unless it's there are.
6:36 am
something that is fundamentally against the security of each individual nation which nobody wants to see happen but i think we've come such a we need to think that we reflect a little bit on how far we've come since january of two thousand. and i would i was really proud of that very encouraged by that and i hope that we could example that might be somewhat off track right now but also we both have two national elections we're both. going through the throes of the inward focus when you have a national election. we come out of both of those elections my guess is that we'll get back on the track of. doing to good things we're doing a lot for your one of the big platform speaking of elections especially in the u.s. is iran and you mentioned how far rests on the u.s. have worked together really to make progress on that but lately we've been hearing
6:37 am
a lot of rhetoric in terms of iran not necessarily from the white house or from the administration but certainly there's a lot of talk about the threat of iran and what bret and how real is the threat as you see it i think. you know iran does represent a. subject matter where the u.s. and russia work very very well together. and i thought russia did some great things by canceling the sale of the those three hundreds of the united states. we showed many many instances of being sensitive to russian concerns and sharing vital information. so that we were able to get it come to a point where we really had a pretty good understanding of what the threat was in terms of the repair of the iranian nuclear program held on we had before it became a real threat and how we could work together to mitigate that threat somewhat.
6:38 am
so i think. if we look at iran today you look at its behavior. to me it's a sign of a regime that is really feeling the pinch a little bit of a global isolation of some of the things that russia and america agreed on just a few years ago. the russian support for the sanctions regime was vital. it's clear that. inside iran there was inflation high prices. that they're feeling that iconic squeeze in the diplomatic isolation. i don't know if that's going to change their behavior but it's interesting that they've now talking about rejoining the talks with the i i think that's positive. and and so i i think that the policies that we work together on two years ago
6:39 am
are now showing some possible fruit in terms of the behavior that i think. i know how the president how strongly the president feels about this relationship with regard to iran similarly with. with israel we are working very closely with them to make sure that there is a precipitous action that would may not be justified in terms of where we think the nuclear program. we get to these positions by working together we get to these positions by trusting each other we get to these positions by sharing information and i think iran is one area where we've done some very good work just finally on the wrong there are experts and within the i.a.e.a. as well who say that the threat the nuclear threat first of all iran is not exactly
6:40 am
what it's played up to be outside of iran one and two that if they abide by the law that iran should have a right to a nuclear program how then do we move forward without encouraging double standards we have always said that. iran. should have access to peaceful nuclear power if it wish and we've offered to replace the fuel and it's a medical reactors into iran. so it's not an issue with the whether a country like iran or any other country if it wishes to have peaceful use of nuclear power there ought to be a way that can be provided having said that iran has also. required rather openly what it would do if it became an account of our being to be one of its neighbors in the region. so those words have to be listened through a little bit and they have to if iran seriously wants to. play according to the
6:41 am
game but play hard of the rules that all of us play by. signing the documents that . guarantee a certain behavior. there's no reason the iran could not have nuclear power and nuclear power for peaceful use so you know that to me the. the pressure of the responsibility is not upon russia or the united states to sort of. make iran do anything but it doesn't want to do it's up to iran to say you know we want to be like north korea time it ten years from now living in a world of isolation and it's a great civilization great people we happen to know that the iranian people want more freedom they look upon the west and countries outside their borders as as inspiration in the same ways in which they see the freedom of our societies and
6:42 am
they want to live like that. they're going to have to figure out how they get that a little bit more but as far as the nuclear question i think that. both of our countries have sent signals to iran that there is a there's a perfectly reasonable pathway that preserves their dignity and their respect to go through peaceful use of nuclear power so it really is up to them general james jones former national security adviser to president obama to say thank you very much. some.

direction i think mr proposal for no exact list of problems such as for instance and says. we are not really on the and talking about sports in general do you think this is the main problem in sports in general russia the fact that it hasn't modernized it hasn't come into the twenty first century since its peak. peak. mistake all they come north but they are not on a final on the final way and since we have to train. we cannot wait for two more improved. play. and then we have a really short time to make it really good for sorts in sochi it's everything in russia i hear not the book a year not some olympics in london i only saw three and i understand suppression or understand how important this i'm here to be for my past. is

it's really important that everybody understand we have only several days. and we have to give one hundred fifty percent that we are successful in in such a rush sort of problems with drugs little last few years and sessions of. nine before going through for lympics you one hundred percent sure that the russians he was my clean i can. everybody is cleaner but i see structure. is a code to be for we tell people who are often said we can shrink all the new insights. and absolutely this was one of the reasons that they come to russia i trust them and they i see how they fight against russia and they maybe make you know you'll support we have really hard. coaches doctors and stuff more became
