world by. this is r t. the rule for all for formula one engines and this weekend will be mixed with the angry voices of and regime activists promising days of rage after a year of arab spring protests police have fired tear gas on stun grenades to disperse demonstrators in clashes just ahead of the sunday grand prix. reports like libya and syria this uprising has been well off the radar. it took a car fire ahead of a major sporting event for the world to notice the flames of discord and golf in a small island nation in the persian gulf stream a supplicating in the smoke of an ongoing struggle between protesters and police

demonstrations have been happening in bahrain for more than here now protesters say this is the longest lasting revolt in the arab spring so far the only result from them has been an increase in violence on all sides students from the capital b. are more than a passing similarity to the pictures out of them battle series city homes but the city's enjoyed a very different level of attention simple efficiency and media state surprisingly silent considering their stance on other middle eastern revolutions they were silent when the bahraini revolution was crushed last year there are all but silent about the human rights abuses in bahrain itself and formula one races just focus the attention of that society and when the media does turn to the hurricane they seem to do more harm than good foreign media has been covering the also as the

big you always use the free market share ford says because. they don't understand that this actually helps the government the same as it was at the house risk serious such as the opposition says hundreds have been wounded in standoff with police and many sacked from their jobs or arrested for taking part in mass protests but unlike in syria and libya no one has called for foreign intervention. bereans problems put before the international human rights council european and american countries were enthusiastic about exploring this issue but the us prefer to leave it to the independent commission created here by the government and it did bring back several very nice human rights defenders who were in exile when the real one speeds out of. much of the media and the world's attention is likely to follow crean even go to school. and we would love it here and i'll tell you when you get involved with us on our stories on our website or to dot com we're asking you for

your opinion on why protests in bahrain and not seen by the mainstream media as part of the arab spring let's see how the numbers are for this hour from r.t. dot com here they are so far most of you think regime change in bahrain is just not in the western interests of the world thirteen percent say it's due to a lack of media coverage and certain things clashes in the country are considered religiously motivated and a tiny minority there says it's because the protests are comparatively a loveless. from syria now to that of egypt hundreds of thousands of demonstrators once again engulfed in cairo's tahrir square in protest against the ruling military council at the rally involved supporters from exact opposite ends of the political spectrum with secular activists rubbing shoulders with islamists to discuss the latest display of civil unrest joining us here on oxy james corbett a political analyst with a special interest in the arab uprisings good to see you over

a year since egypt's revolution toppled the previous regime crowds again demonstrating on to rear square do tell us what's driving all of them to the streets this time around. well thank you for having me on i think there are two answers to that question and there's the obvious one and the subtle one so the obvious one is what's happening in egypt right now he's of egypt we have a understandable anger spilling over into the population about the presidential electoral commission this is an earlier this week to discount the pain of the twenty three candidates amy so-called free and democratic elections for the president of egypt in the upcoming elections so there's obviously. a lot of people and i think that this is just. a logical extension of that but the less on the less little level we have what's happening in egypt recently the international community and i think there is a large outside interest in what's happening there right now specifically which we can locate in henry kissinger's comments last year during the initial part of this

uprising when he said that there is a chance for this to turn into a type of nationalism a nationalistic movement that would be a secularist in orientation and he compared to what was happening under nasser half a century ago and of course he equated nasserism to terrorism so i think there's a deep western interest in an outside interest in seeing that type of nationalism not come to the fore in egypt right now and there's a lot of history of outside intervention with some of the people who are actually organizing and spearheading these protests really just that just aside from the outside intervention that you talk all fair we had a political analyst in cairo on the program here on our teachers a bit earlier he was saying that people are fed up with the ruling military council they're also fed up with the muslim brotherhood that have only been there for a very very short while the democratically voted in he also said the people would actually to some degree rather have it all thora tarion form of leadership like what they had with mubarak because they operate better under such
9:07 am
a leadership any truth that you think. well i'm sure there is truth to that insofar as there are a lot of different opinions on all different sides as you pointed to earlier there's a lot of different sects and division in the ranks right now and i think that's the important part underlying this because i think that what's really an anthem a two to anyone with an interest in seeing a type of autocratic government coming into power in egypt and ruling with an iron fist is that is the idea of some strong national secularism actually gaining ground here a lot of different interests that are involved in making sure that doesn't happen as there have been for many many years so for example with another muslim brotherhood you can look at the way back to the one nine hundred fifty s. a long history of direct cia involvement with the muslim brotherhood and using the muslim brotherhood as a tool of destabilization for national secularist movements and that policy was formulated quite specifically in anime nine hundred seventy nine build a bridge meeting in austria in which dr bernard lewis basically proposed the use of
9:08 am
the muslim brotherhood is a type of tool of destabilization in those countries or you look at the across six movement which is another group that's very much at the forefront of these protests on record was in attendance in two thousand and eight in new york at the alliance of youth movement council which was directly funded by the u.s. state department you had u.s. assistant secretary of state michael posner coming out in two thousand and nine and two thousand and eleven admitting that for the previous two years the u.s. state department had been directly funding. countries to apologize for cutting it i mean you do bring in some very very good angles but i just for the moment want to stick to the domestic side of things if i do i do apologize to the muslim brotherhood now dominates both houses of egypt's parliament they're also in charge of forming the constitution drafting committee can you tell us what kind of egypt are we likely to see with this new balance of power provided it all carries on and it is actually successful getting through well at the moment it seems to be

teetering between either the continuation of the ruling military junta and. they're obviously trying to assert their authority with the recent decision to many of the presidential candidates including the muslim brotherhood preferred candidate for the election. brotherhood of course also quite popular but as you say there's a lot of discontent with the way that they've been doing things i think in either event it seems to be a more autocratic which is why there is only a very small sliver i think of opportunity a window of opportunity for the egyptian people to insert themselves into this into to make sure that it doesn't go in one of those autocrats autocratic direction our political analyst james corbett here at artefacts for joining us on the program. this is our to enough france head to the polls on sunday and investors are hanging on the result to know how the outcome will affect the e.u. from challenging its budget discipline leaving the e.u. world together criticizing the union has been

a trump card for all. these tests are so we have reports. it hasn't been the perfect marriage but they agreed where it mattered most of the time. a tandem seen as key in e.u. decision making. but france's relationships with her lynn and brussels have hit a rough patch the french election if you look at the country of france i think because on the right side there is mrs lippett which is the plan was to reintroduce her for the french franc the french currency was missed all along wants to renegotiate the of the treaty on the fiscal compact incumbent nicolas sarkozy is no exception pledging to freeze france's e.u. funding and bringing back a border controls over in the left corner shown around the rejects europe's budget belt tightening pact people are uneasy with the fact that he or contributing to the failed policies in other parts of the union then people don't really

understand why is it that there's more and more legislation coming from the european level in member states have to adjust it for the mostly pro europe french public it's about jobs and social security just as brussels and berlin want tough cutbacks. and that doesn't rest easy with voters who gave a resounding no to giving the e.u. machine even more power seven years ago even though it's been a perfect tool to offload questionable policies. criticizing europe can be a convenient scapegoat because it appeals to people who do not like the functioning of europe and it can divert responsibility if something goes wrong it's not the fault of the government or nicolas sarkozy it's the fault of europe it's his it's a way into this place where e.u. plans are half a billion spent or finding a fault that's really gotten on the state of french voters as part of another what's more these promises of all that heard before regardless of who gets

africa all ready to lend a helping hand but only for a bigger say over the international bank i mean that meeting today in washington ministers from the group of twenty into after allies nations will focus on that funding but investment advisor patrick young doesn't have much faith a move will help to save the eurozone in any way. this is absolutely a cataclysm for the euro zone there is no way no matter how large the sea of guards are no matter how high big it is that the i.m.f. is currently assembling nobody can afford to pay for italian government debt it is simply impossible we are pushing nations on the mediterranean fringe of europe into if we expect that they're going to stay in the euro zone it's a tragic development for government the option is quite clear and they need to say we cannot pay our debts we cannot survive in the euro zone and they need to leave on it which is of greece they need to start pushing you drive much because

looks at the rhetoric surrounding brave it skill and spirit. to take on those extremists so yes we accept the. minority of all i'm saying is that there is a minority if you want to. so you use a minority there's a minority of people who exist within the muslim community who are extremists who don't believe in the democratic values and you'll believe in previous focal existence and tolerance and what we must not do is tanisha whole feet system all the communities based on your actions over a small number of minority extremist that exist in all of you know really what is a ritual here is like. i'm here times are very very rachael go ahead and is not exactly what we're trying to do with breivik right now is to paint all the right wing people who have moderate points of view about immigration and and cultural integration with the same brush saying that this kind of rhetoric is responsible for his actions.

across talk a bit later today here on r t but time now to head off to one of russia's remotest corners in the arctic. efforts have continued for decades now to introduce an efficient transport system in the harsh conditions and unforgiving cold he is talking trouble to areas where those attempts are left behind the shadow of death and destruction. making tracks through the tundra of this region's name. means in the local language the end of the earth sydney boys here is in central parts of russia and if you want to go somewhere you just get in a car and go on the market here it's impossible you have to wait for the river to gore or take a plane supports for bridges have to be driven dozens of meters deep and the routes

foundations pass down repeatedly to stop it collapsing back into the two hundred this joint project is an attempt to bring transport to the land but the end of the earth but it's not the first time in previous attempts of left a shadow over the whole region started in one nine hundred forty nine tens of thousands of prisoners toiled in summer heat and cold and stalin's dream of a trans polar railway line conditions were brutal and thousands were worked and starved to death or shot by their captors that's not what you did keep people away for refusing to work seeing evil couple of words about stalin. was our prisoners and sent us here to watch over them building this railway had we refused he would have shot us as well in one hundred fifty three the project was abandoned built without any proper heavy equipment the unfinished track and embankments oakley

subsided back into the tundra all that's left are a few bridges rotting barrack buildings and the long shadow of this corner of the gulag empire this bridge is part of stalin's infamous road of death but since this project and so many others have failed to put permanent roads here in the russian arctic some of the only people to see these side historical monuments are scenes of off road drivers give gary and his companions try to penetrate some of the furthest reaches of this vast two hundred landscape they've seen abandoned villages call a mountain p. . weeks and even a settlement that had never been reached by wheeled vehicles before and they were good to go to you once you arrive in this area you begin to see the world in a very different way these were places are damned good and enormous kassam all reserves discovered in the far north the commitment has been made to put money and resources towards road and rail building this time but there's

a lot of work ahead before russia is arctic heels any it's a vast isolation. let's do it as we go there's a good to see you again amazing news are france now a riskier bet then of russia what does that mean traitors like the socialist favorite for sunday's presidential election francois all along the cost of insuring frances is now higher than russia's french debt is eighty six percent of g.d.p. and unemployment at the twelve year high the cat curls in paris is performing for worse than london and frankfurt this year otherwise six has gone over fifteen hundred offer a choppy with good news for russia traders like the pledge by the finance minister to scale back. russia can do that because crude is rising today that's one slowing the u.s. economy is recovering crude up one hundred dollars today alone is pretty good period for crude generally. supported by signs that privatization may go ahead this year as planned stronger crude is proved to put off the yesterday's five percent
