tonight egypt shouldn't get their final shortlist of presidential candidates but fear a return to mubarak's era with its prime minister back in the race. redrawing europe's borders e.u. leaders pander to flourishing right wing factions with the french president even threatening to quit the show and get a free travels of. and the protests move sweeping through russia and relations with the u.s. president medvedev evaluates his legacy in his final media q. and a before leaving the kremlin. however a good evening for me kevin owen here in moscow this is r.t.
12:01 pm
it's now eight pm moscow time our top story egypt has issued the final list of presidential candidates with the vote now less than a month away multiple disqualifications have left voters though confused over who to choose but one controversial figure is back in the running sarah first told us why his name is causing concern. further drama added as if any more were needed in this presidential race by the last minute decision by the electoral commission to include on this final candidate list the former prime minister. defeat now he was disqualified on cheese day of the pass which barred former senior barack officials from running in this presidential race now he appealed that on the grounds that the law was passed after he'd applied to run and that was upheld so he has been included on that final list of candidates it hasn't gone down too well here has to be said amongst many egyptians to view him as
12:02 pm
a remnant of the former regime and not someone that they really want to see running for the future presidential spot nervously then taking the country fool so that really is causing quite a lot of anger amongst the people here of course is only added as he said to this controversy surrounding the candidacies and the candidates themselves we see the number of disqualifications happening so much so the fact that from the original shortlist of twenty three candidates you've actually known legal thirteen candidates on that list and a lot of people have really seeing that as an interference with the electoral system a lot of criticisms of being aimed at the ruling military council people really feel and indeed the electoral commission itself people feeling that they've got t. much power here is one egyptian i was speaking to you after this list was announced that you know the moment is all about the rules and they can change at any time of course it's left everyone very very confused here is less than a month until that date is supposed to take place and all this drama surrounding
12:03 pm
the candidates is really needs the discussion and the focus away from the very important aspects of what these candidates stand for what their policies are who in these candidates actually are themselves and you know month doesn't really leave them much time to push their policies food really doesn't have a sense or at. maybe that initial excitement and positivity towards this first three presidential election after the revolution and now that's been very much a place by a sense of frustration a disappointment for the people with the calling for the vote to be postponed with gather and for the electoral commission for the ruling military council to be fired to step aside for another body to come in. close to the region and the culture was blogger in the middle east coast shero is joining us on the line from london hi there karl despite a wave of disqualification aguy the most controversial no that we heard that of a barracks from. remains in the race tonight does that mean he still has his
12:04 pm
supporters in the ruling authority or simply that he's done his paperwork on time you know i don't think it's a question of paperwork interpretation in egypt at the moment is that this is the military's push to maintain a credible candidate credible that is from their point of view someone that could take votes away from the islamist candidates and other candidates and possibly allow them to control the transition for the transition into egypt and maintain the military's control and all these disqualifications we've witnessed have resulted in a lot of confusion among the voters many favorites of being blocked so how is this going to play out when people actually get their chance to vote in a month. well it's very interesting at the moment but i think we'll see a lot of tactical voting for example you would have thought the. extreme islamists with actually support perhaps the muslim brotherhood and it appears they're going
12:05 pm
to vote someone for someone who used to be in the muslim brotherhood. has running as an independent at the same time you might argue that liberals for example is another secularist who wouldn't have anything to do with anyone associated with them or barak era but if they have a choice between an islamist candidate and someone like i would almost. or again used to be a figure in the more administration they might choose. for our room also so again it's all about become because of this rushed nature and this extreme disqualification is going to be into second choices and perhaps third choices and i don't think that at all represents the spirit of egyptian when they started this uprising and aspiration for a more democratic egypt and also of course the way this whole election process has been conducted has not gone down well with many egyptians is it the calling for both the electoral committee and the military rulers to be ousted is there a danger this tension could escalate into a new unrest. well here we have to be careful who might initiate that unrest
12:06 pm
because you might have assumed that the muslim brotherhood for example having lost the leading credit of shot there or that salafist when they lost their leading candidate. they would have sort of agitated more to have them be instated but there's only they've done half hearted measures so this points out to two things first that the drivers of the unrest or the uprising in the beginning where not the islamists were more the kind of the more secular forces in egypt who are the second thing that points out to those don't appear to be kind of willing to mobilize on the ground and say go back to tahrir square in order to upset this is the way that rush nature of their lead up to the present television presidential election is going up so i predict in the medium term or the immediate future there's not going to be unnecessarily i mean an unrest but i would say there's going to be a lot of disappointment predominantly for most egyptians because there are going to
12:07 pm
be the possibility for the kind of the choice basic question this would interesting i'm open to get from you if faced with a choice between a form of mubarak man and the extreme islamist candidates who do you think the people are going to choose at the end of the day depends what the people are i mean if you look at the results of the lectures undoubtedly it was two thirds of the population voted for an islamist candidate however they are they are split roughly two thirds one one third and it's not kind of a pleasant choice i think what we need to focus on behind the question is why is everyone being deprived the possibility to vote for who would have been their first choice why isn't there a credible liberal candidate say partially due to the military scheming and exclusion of candidates and partially people like but are there excluding themselves who are following closely thanks for your input mideast blogger the joining us on the line from london thank you. there's

during the last q. and a of his tenure his words were in regards to the latest wave of post-election mass rallies across the country. because summed up some of my very final words as president. this is the last interview that medvedev has given to a journalist before handing over reins had to put in so a very broad range of issues was covered not the least of which were of course the protests which followed russia's state duma elections at the end of last year and took that to mean to do that said that he respected the peoples are so content or discontent with the government but he did warn that some people are getting a little carried away with this sort of protest for example by a person on a hunger strikes. regarding people who protest it first of all they have the right but the other thing here is that there can be a genuine protest and there can be a well calculated political opposition and let me say right away i'm not judging
12:14 pm
anyone on that matter still there's such a thing is in hunger games if you've seen it it's quite a regular hollywood blockbuster i've seen it and those who do such things often pursue some obvious political goals and some have said that the protests in russia were financed by none other than the united states a state department to that material vetted replied that people should not get carried away with conspiracy theories too much washington's hand can reach different places but regarding our country we shouldn't demonize americans let alone say that they can influence some serious political processes in our country we are a big silver in state and no one can interfere i've got a certain sympathy for one of the candidates but that's my personal opinion that people continue running washington of course the issue of russia's foreign oil tycoon and now a prisoner may have had a costly also came up some were asking why the me that it didn't get pardoned to him it did that to me to mean that if reply did that he couldn't do so
