an update from a correspondent reporting. across developments there in the big apple so activists want a nationwide strike is that happening then today marino. i would say it all out strike is happening there in new york city but thousands of people have taken to the streets now converging in union square this has been hours that hours of demonstrations taking place there are union members labor unions taking part in this event students and of course occupy activists and all those that have been supporting that there have been pickets taking place outside of banks and the offices of corporate home furnishings and multinational corporations the message of this movement has not changed they are still speaking out about wealth inequality in the united states about corporate influence on u.s. politics but there are students now in the crowd talking about the huge trillion dollar debt bubble now the problem right now is at union square as i mentioned
4:02 pm
because in just a few minutes at some time from now there will be a performance taking place i am actually joined right now by one of the performers that will be taking the stage technique of artists an optimist you know the supporter of the opera i watched the very beginning. let me ask you what is different about this movement now in the spring than what we saw you know begin in the fall of the gets a little more seasoned they didn't know what to expect from police they realize that they're going to be antagonized also i think they're paying a lot more attention to the way that the movement is marginalized i mean obviously there are things that can't be shared with the public about the way that people are moving because i think that a lot of things are done not in private per se to to hide things from people but rather to protect. the goals of the move which are to exemplify the disparity in the war between poor and rich you know. that's something that's only
4:03 pm
affecting people here in america it's all over the world and i think that's why occupy became a worldwide movement and not just something that was relegated to zuccotti park absolutely but in the fall when things were broken up by u.s. law enforcement. the movement it was sidelined because they didn't have any money i mean they were marginalized by mainstream media which at first said these are lazy unemployed americans they don't have anything better to do with their time or use on the weekends even employed americans were joining movement well some some media some media i think the far right media did like the fact that there were very clear examples of class warfare that weren't invented by stalinist that live in america i think it's very clear that people here already trying to destroy in new york city they're not trying to destroy america they're trying to save this country
4:04 pm
from itself and from the people that have continuously profited from its destruction the next people to take now the occupy movement was calling on the ninety nine percent to not go to work today to refrain from purchasing anything just to show that if they remove the labor and the spending power that that it's really the wealth of the one percent that depends on the participation of the ninety nine percent we see new york is still moving people are still buying people are still working those demands weren't met and hundred percent what else can the movement really to aside from getting a lot of headlines to create a system stemming change what they do have created some systemic change they put incredible pressure on governor cuomo for his millionaire's tax there's been a series of things that they've done besides just talking i think that they definitely proved that they are an incredibly resilient you know that they're not going to. they just go away they're not going to fade and i think that you know the
4:05 pm
police and law enforcement took a little bit more credit than they deserved for a horrible breaking up the encampment in the fall really what part of. the presence of people at zuccotti park was the fact that it's ten below zero. sometimes over there freezing cold conditions the weather played a lot of that into it you know being that want to rush in channel i think a lot of people learned that the hard way about invading that country whether it was adolf hitler in the polian that weather conditions and climate shifts course but we're not going to just sit here and use that as a problem that they would support for people to realize is that regardless of whatever happened in the fall we're still here and we're not going anywhere anytime soon refused to just surrender the city to individuals that have no caring for the lives of individuals because they think the corporations are people too my last question for you the n.y.p.d. did that they have beefed up their security efforts today on may day international
4:06 pm
workers as occupy yachts a surround the street a police officials have said that if and they will not hesitate to arrest anyone that breaks the law they are aware of party to what's been reported that all those illegal i demonstrations are being planned what do you think will will happen in terms of just one force and how they behave with an armed optimist i mean i think the display here is not just to attempt to show strength but it also displays fear fear of the people united that. realistically speaking nobody wants to see another kent state. you know and if someone starts shooting it's not going to be innocent activists stupid it's going to be police on armed civilians how is that going to look and the election moral to be thinking very much for your time even if you are making a minute sir an hour from now that's part of the smart thing. for spitting at me occupied nothing. jeremy carson here in the city thanks very much indeed for an

important live there and now we can cross life to get some reaction from a u.s. presidential candidate jerome whites from the socialist equality party in detroit what we've got a lot of determined talk there just a few moments ago in new york the sort of impact is the movement making today is it really being reborn as activists have been claiming here. well last year is the wall street protests were certainly an expression of deep social anger over the growth of inequality pervious this of both the democrats and republicans today's protests however are not really involving broad layers of the population let alone the working class these essentially are protesting aimed at in one way or another appealing to the conscience of the powers that be and in many cases the trade unions and various x.
4:08 pm
left groups are gauging these protests more or less as part of the reelection campaign of president obama. there will be mass struggle there will be great struggles of the working class in the united states and throughout the world it's clear the the economic situation for all the talk of economic recovery is worsening. in every country whether it's the united states or greece or russia or france all of the big business governments are demanding what's scary and a vicious attack on you on the living stance of the working class so there will be major struggles with this is not what's taking place in the united states today but may just struggles where people are being affected in many different ways and the thing about the occupy wall street movement is that it has been dismissed by the powers that be that you referred to earlier by politicians mainstream media for
4:09 pm
lacking a unified agenda i mean is that what it needs more of a focus agenda to make an impact or all too many people's interests being voiced and it doesn't have the impact it needs. well and in fact the this movement itself has been entirely vulnerable to being taken over by the trade unions and by the democratic party precisely because the banner that it. carried out its protest is no politics no leadership no party and it's precisely politics and leadership and a political party which the working class requires it is that where you step in from the socialist equality party you're trying to politically capitalize on those interests on those concerns on this movement. well the fact of the matter is as i said there is a deep social anger over any quality the threat of war attacks on democratic rights in the united states and throughout the world but the working class is politically
4:10 pm
disenfranchised by political parties by trade unions whether they call themselves socialist or or some cases communist parties or passata in greece or the democrats or republicans in the united states none of these parties speak in the interests of the working class they're all own lock stock and barrel by the financial aristocracy by the financial elite so yes the working class needs a political voice to wear running in these elections in the united states to fight for the building of a mass socialist party of the working class and we reject the claims that are being made everywhere i was just reading you know in greece in spain in america they all claim there is no money under conditions in which the richest one percent of society as enriched itself since the global economic crisis was initiated in two thousand and eight so the key question is not appealing to the powers that be and
4:11 pm
hoping that you can change their conscience no the answer is building a political party of the working class all right in the united states and around the world to fight for social k. let's see how this political party will fare then in this upcoming election two questions here how do you see the support for your movement being represented in these elections and secondly what about a bomb of one of the chances of him getting back in again just to brief questions on well first of your second question no there really is no fundamental difference between mitt romney and obama and whoever is in the white house next year is going to pursue a policy of savage or a stereotype. war against syria against iran preparation for war against china. and from the standpoint of the working class it snows significant difference between whichever one of these big business parties are elected or what you are
4:12 pm
a presidential candidate what sort of support do you think you can get just briefly please drive well we've gotten throughout the country a very warm response there is a deep sentiment that the whole political system an economic system is stacked against the working class of course there are deeply anti democratic laws that seek to prevent anyone who is not a millionaire from being on the ballot but we will fight everywhere to bring our program of international socialism in to gain as much support and to build our party as a new leadership in the working class that's the fundamental aim of our election campaign not simply to win votes jerome white presidential candidate from the socialist equality party joining us live there in detroit thank you for your time thank you. i just remind you for all the latest developments you can follow us on the line through our twitter feed that's r.t. under school com. well may the first was marked with mass labor day marches
4:13 pm
worldwide in europe several large nationwide demos have taken place in italy rallies turn volunteers riot police beat protesters demanding change from their leaders the city of cheer in seoul the fiercest clashes in france where it's election week supporters of incumbent leader nicolas sarkozy and the country's far right symbol tennessee hit the streets of paris five days before the crucial presidential vote in spain where the euro crisis has seen the country plunge into a double dip recession people voiced their anger at the own going stringent cuts and unemployment also in greece crowds marched outside the parliament building in athens and through the city and a stereo protests where david posture from the belgian workers' party told me earlier that the future economy of the of europe should be centered around everyday citizens. in italy as. the violence come from. establishment with the political territory when you have

a cut in your wage. of your wage when you cut social security when you are of out of employment when you see that. people are confronted with very violent process in their life they lose the. i their middle two to to to survive and that's why i think we see that sort of reaction in the population we have to have an economy with the voice of the people first the people and not the profit and we have an economy with solidarity and corporation and not always fighting and conquer competition between countries and people and so on so we have to do. renewed economy in total basis that's one one thing but directly

for the moment we are to take measures that reach people paying for the crisis with taxes against them and not against the common people well may day here moscow's or the streets brimming with people most were celebrating demonstrating trade unions marched under the labor day flag to demand better working conditions and russia's ruling tandem to spearheading a crowd of supporters in english who was there. but a hundred twenty thousand people out to explain this one in the world there isn't rushing down to tell me the name in the. name. makes me money. rather. than criticism work for the retirement age raised and for better conditions for workers over all.
4:16 pm
workers. and then he went on strike so the order to demand more and conditions in the united states. comes across a. day to mark the labor unions fight for the last seventy or eighty years we all know congress various political movements and parties on the street name. this day is the most the be. the rest of the. citizen came from the united states. also taking part in this they can't see how to sort of. place over the last six months of this claim or name they. said the same. reason or more of a day to celebrate spraying and then and to protest anything. opposition members are also out to get their message across among them the country's second largest

party which still refuses to accept losses parliamentary election results and is unhappy about that amid putin's return to the kremlin jacob graves reports from amid a sea of red flags israeli is held annually for the colors policy all made it carries a certain amount of symbolism for those of us they started to represent workers in russia was a stages of history comes the days of the soviet union masquerades which are held then take a look at the. crowd you really get a sense for that this down among some of the just friends for the soviet union images of the controversial georgia standard for its being held up time for their leader gennady zyuganov now he has proven quite crucial a very critical of president elect vladimir putin he was main opposition in the presidential elections they still refuse the results that are claimed to have occurred amazed allegations of electoral fraud they are the only was standing out in force they've numbered in about over ten thousand people even though it's an

aging support base being still drum up a lot of followers for this cause but also the third and fourth largest factions in the state duma respectively they've also be represented today that is a just russia party and liberal democrats now one notable absentee from proceedings in central moscow today has been the white ribbon movement those cooling for free and fair elections it garnered a lot of media attention on the back of december's parliamentary elections initially coup for a protest be held today but since counts of it instead they want to plug together pulls together for may this thing a day before president elects vellum a person's inauguration on may the seventh they wanted to make a stronger show of it then now as for those in attendance today fundamentally many of them coming from state duma parties or others also being represented such as

nationalists choosing this day to march. president obama is in afghanistan right now on a little visit to cement the country's future relations the trip comes follows a trip follows an angry demonstration against nato in a southern afghan town hundreds of people rallied accusing foreign troops of killing four children during a gunfight with insurgents. and journalists who can chant and believes that the trip is not going to do much to solve the tension. between the countries. president obama can do nothing to restore any form of positive relationships again between the nato forces and the afghan people particularly or even president karzai who in the last year threatened to join the taliban i mean it's international workers they are no one suffers more than working people of the global south particularly the poor people of afghanistan who are suffering the fourth decade now of war that's visiting their country tragically they've been victim to all kinds of atrocities by the nato occupation forces from the massacre just
4:20 pm
a month ago of seventeen villages supposedly by just one u.s. army personnel probably by by more with nato occupation forces posing with dead afghans etc these truly are the veritable wretched of the earth will be absolute insult to expect the afghan people to have any anything but hostility and resistance to nato seeing the way these people afghan people are treated by nato i mean the afghan afghanistan from the poorest countries in the world and such is the absolute kind of. disgusting way in which the afghan people are treated that the dead afghan people as a result of patient on even counted these people i don't even count as human beings these these in the eyes of nato are children and people of a lesser god the afghan people and peace loving people on the one except that. well that to bring it up to date for the moment just turning twenty minutes past the hour now the occupy wall street protesters use anti greed message one global support last year hoping to rekindle the movement's momentum while next
4:21 pm
a lot of occupy activist tells us how the group is still on the rise as more people understand they're being robbed by their own government stay with our team for that now be back with some of our main news stories about eight minutes from now. well here are some polls cathedral in london from where the occupy the london stock exchange me was fairly recently effected the movement appears from where i'm
4:22 pm
standing to be on its last legs but luckily jamie can see for you from all the pylons and is here to convince me otherwise jamie thanks for talking to us today no you said yourself a nice to feel it to this place is almost haunted the tents used to be right that just where you are standing is the occupy movement dead absolutely no it's obviously one of the things of the comp moving is that we're allowed to put a lot more energy into the movement itself was actually becoming very difficult to sustain the kind as it becomes very large if you bear in mind that five months ago none of us the way the count would last this long we're still developing our ideas of how to move forward how to use outreach to the movement to generate solidarity and otherwise really reaching into the public consciousness to get across a very simple. social environmental and economic justice so we've only just begun in that sense for that it's no coincidence that we are headed in one of the financial hearts of the london stock exchange just not very far away from here it's all bankers all still being paid that bonuses as we hear about in the newspapers
4:23 pm
every day the one percent appears very much to be still in charge have you had any impact absolutely i think that there's been some measures by the government because we have such an influence on the public view of the financial system that there has been you know a leading banker. down his bonus and. suffrage was made to turn back is no way to set up but i think that these are just palliative measures i think that the government realize that there's a lot of public support for the issues that we're raising awareness about and so they've taken some measures to make it look as if they're doing something you're absolutely right in terms of the one percent remain the one percent that's completely untouched. also if you bear in mind the fact that last year of the hundred top foot say the average high rises forty one percent this is everything is business as usual you're absolutely right but what's different is people in now where about this people are now entering this dialog and they're beginning to
4:24 pm
challenge the assumptions challenge for a very very long period it's all in which is that can we continue with such an unsustainable undemocratic unjust economic system a fog of my looks kind of like a sort of for that party for people who have something to lose more so people in the ether willing to sacrifice you know to see achieve that goal it's very interesting question actually people are sacrificing their jobs their relationships not by extension many people who lost their homes i've never been in a movement where people have that dedicated the general portrayal of us as being people who. loses is absolutely. the opposite to the reality the reality is that a whole span of people from across the general public have been motivated to dedicate themselves one hundred percent to this movement now this is means that a very small proportion of so actually experienced activists and by far the highest amounts of us are people who just from ordinary walks of life who've gone that i want to make a stop and we have to do something about this unsustainable system and this is the
4:25 pm
movement for us to do that is five months now since he came to this area let's talk a bit about your goals a lot of people seem to have a very limited understanding of what you're actually trying to achieve his take mr x. ok when we took this space so much of the fifteenth. over period of forty eight hours and about three and a half thousand people took part in generating what was called our initial statements so really within forty hours we made it very clear why we're here so you guys are some of the more obvious ones. questioning what we see as an unsustainable economic system an undemocratic economic system a political system that seems to be working with profits before people it's intertwined with the corporations we also question. and the idea of regulating both days being managed by the people that meant to be regulated we also question the idea that perpetual war for resources is something that's going to destroy the planet so we made it very clear we now use all ideas to the world you know within
4:26 pm
forty eight hours and economic system based on infinite growth but which relies on foreign oil resources is frankly absolutely embarrassing let's broaden this out and talk a little bit about the global economic situation if you like through the prism of you and me. the european project is constantly in the papers and it looks like it's on its last legs how do you see it playing out. what we see that when i say we i mean i'm speaking as a member of occupied but it's very clear from the movement from the beginning that the economic system is on its last legs what's happening in europe what's happening in greece is just a symptom of this disease it's an economic war that weapon is debt that really rang a bell with a lot of people in this disease is going to continue to get worse unless we actually as people as a grassroots movement actually take control. of this economic system is being run by very few people and it's just been completely out of control and i think the movement is moving more towards a revolutionary solution rather than
4:27 pm
a reformist government in various countries to obviously a pace to see you occupying place. on a course towards the us is reportedly rolled out what he's calling a microwave weapon to disperse crowds are you making plans for dealing with a kind of technology this country has last year they bought a large water cannons to disperse dispense with demonstrators iraq's first and i think that's kind of a scare story i know it's true that the military in the states may have bought this weapon that can use sound waves to kind of disempower people who might be in the streets i think that's a symptom of something far worse that's coming ok poised the canary in the morning as far as we can see. events. the rest of this world will realize that they've been roped and that they are being put into subjugation by completely on just undemocratic unsustainable financial systems and they will oh as well become furious about slave i mean human beings be in
