or the. well there's another big battle about defense cuts that's gearing up i mean really does it ever and last summer the mere talk about cuts was enough to spook investors and to keep them weary and this summer shaping up to be endless dog days of debates on the topic so goldman sachs wanted to help investors out they put together a list of companies to get more than twenty percent of their sales from the
10:33 pm
government to see who might be vulnerable when cuts set in and boy are we glad that they actually did that never before has the military industrial complex been more straightforward and frightening all those companies receive a big chunk of their revenue from your tax dollars so we can really figure out who's living off the government dole but the real story here are the top four the ones that make ninety plus percent of their sales from the government should come as no surprise that paul for connected to defense spending the first company huntington in those industries they build ships for the navy and the coast guard and ninety nine percent of their sales are to the government that means that ninety nine percent of their business relies on money continuing continuing to flow in from washington so really it should come as no surprise that in two thousand and eleven they spent over three point two million dollars on lobbying so that the cash didn't dry up and then just this week the head of huntington ingles was fear mongering about pentagon budget cuts according to him the cuts could result in
10:34 pm
a rise in the cost of ships in other words by more ships or it's going to cost you now the next military sales superstar is good old lockheed martin ninety seven percent of their revenue comes from taxpayer money and they spent a whopping fifteen point one million and lobbying the government and of course lockheed c.e.o. trying to sway public opinion over defense cuts by declaring the cuts would result in massive layoffs and also don't forget about lockheed martin's defense industry doppelganger northrop grumman they get ninety percent of their sales from uncle sam and they spent twelve point seven million in lobbying and then finally there's l. three communications they focus on surveillance and navigation systems and ninety percent of their sales are to the government with three point seven. million dollars of revenue coming back to k. street now speaking of k. street those four companies at one point or another employed fifty seven former or future government employees so yeah it really is just one gigantic revolving door and it's not just the c.e.o.'s and the lobbyists who are sounding the sirens about price raises and layoffs listen to congressman randy forbes on c.n.n.
10:35 pm
just this morning. as the navy will have fewer ships than we had one hundred years we'll be giving one hundred fifty to two hundred thousand pink slips to active men and women in the military today and according to the secretary defense will cost one point five million jobs across the country. well congressman forbes i'm sure you already know this but if the cuts don't come from the military budget they will come from education social spending health care infrastructure the environment and no matter where the cuts come from jobs will be lost not much point today the nation pointed out an interesting statistic if you put one billion dollars into areas like health care education clean energy that investment would result in up to one hundred forty percent more jobs than if that money were put into defense so defense doesn't really appear to be the best bang for your jobs buck now does it but don't expect to hear those numbers from the government reliant military industrial complex these figures just go to show that there are certain industries
10:36 pm
companies out there whose entire livelihoods depend on your tax dollars and as the business insider noted with numbers like that may as well call them government agencies. well here's an interesting idea special facilities that are prisons exclusively for veterans and what's considered the first of its kind in new cells but announced at the muscogee county jail in georgia which is close to fort benning now this storm can house sixteen veterans and offers a variety of community services like a p.t.s.d. treatment program a special veterans court as well as housing for veterans transitioning back to regular life after prison hard to get any solid statistics out there for heart how large the problem a veteran incarceration really is after coming back from iraq and afghanistan because the guardian reported a two thousand and four study calculated that there are about one hundred forty thousand veterans and u.s. federal state prisons but that was eight years ago and also doesn't include those held a county jail so could this new type of facility become
10:37 pm
a trend joining me to discuss it is the man behind the facility john dar the sheriff of musty county john thanks so much for joining us tonight and when you start by just telling us how it is that you came to the conclusion that this was something you had to have. zero. zero zero zero zero zero zero zero. zero zero. zero. zero. zero zero well we're going to look. now as i mentioned at the top of the introduction here it's really hard to find any specific statistics it's just how many veterans do you find themselves in prison once they come home do you have any you know better up to date numbers or at least local figures. what it was going to jail that have a little over a hundred. of what we think is you know i thought placing deprive about.
10:38 pm
our veterans. and what. we do is if these people. if we expect that number or to the problem the growth of. the comet's and more about the services that they're provided as i mentioned p.t.s.d. treatment what is the veterans' court program while we. look at a lot. of work. for. all i know it which is the corps and we have a lot more guys that is better than if you want to underscore that we have unity getting involved. might of. providers and local unity and all the law. provided. you have groups.
10:39 pm
like the missile. and the and all those. that lost the internet land the transition back into the unity. by the one hand and that was really about how we look at this project. some of what i saw you know like really important programs and i'm just curious as to what you think because on one hand i think that it's great that we provide veterans of more of the three billeted of services but then why isn't also the entire the general population get some of the treatment to you know do you think that that's a problem is that we don't focus more on rehabilitation when it just comes to the general population that's in our prisons out there. well i agree that that's what. we've got to look at this is not a rehabilitation for anybody that goes to. be part of this band the more it's done is a transition back and so are the we have the duty why getting any kind of. and
10:40 pm
then when they transition by not think crime or. by going to dinner with you if you talk a lot of share the biggest concern is the right of course people come back. that was the very weakly but we feel it's a real bargain and we think that hopefully we realize. that it is right down the back also on their budget. that a lot of what the climate is all that a lot of these people that are in the veterans all of that. are dealing with those very similar problems that they have drug and alcohol issues and the. fact that behind it all we know they want all those four groups.
10:41 pm
there they're dealing with the same issues and they're watching the kind of very differently target of the. piano that makes a lot of sense john i'm sorry for the brevity but we're having a some audio issues a little hard to hear it even so hopefully we're going to catch back up with you because this is you know a great story get more information on that the if you guys start a trend and we see other prisons doing the same thing thanks so much for joining us tonight yes my. aren't so calm tonight the g.o.p. is it still trying to say that a lot of defense budget despite what even the on panetta says we're to get our jill time to getting i've already heard that line of no coming up next for real is happy hour where one company is profiting off of trayvon martin's death and if you think at the end is near the interest south we might have had twenty times predictions in the minds all wrong thank you the. the
10:42 pm
. he is eve he. he he should. eat. such stuff.
10:43 pm
to tonight's fireside with your who's. today secretary leon panetta give a speech to troops at fort benning ga the focus of this speech was discipline after the numerous incidents this year in afghanistan the military has launched a new campaign to remind u.s. forces there representing the american people need to behave to military standards what incidents my talking about well there was the video of troops you're in aiding on taliban corpses the photos the release to the l a times of troops posing with an
10:44 pm
insurgent corpse the burning of korans at parwan the lead to protests all across afghanistan and of course the massacre of seventeen civilians allegedly by staff sergeant robert bales and that only leaves incidents affected public perception of the war here at home but they clearly affect the perception of the war in afghanistan itself and some of these events are horrifying the massacre of women and children is an excusable and nobody would argue otherwise and the young soldier that gave photos over the l a times well he claimed that his reason for putting them out into the open was a breakdown of leadership in his unit that he felt contributed to these kinds of actions but the thing is it's about so much more than that if you want to target mid-level commanders i think you also have to speak about those at the top the generals that testify before congress and speak to the press and give false evaluations of how well the war's going and we've documented time and time again on the show how the facts in the figures don't add up to what the leadership tells us not only that we have to realize what over ten years of war can do to people
10:45 pm
multiple deployments fatigue a crisis of conscience and confidence the broader question of what exactly are these men and women fighting for and that was a question that president obama left broadly and answered this week when he flew into kabul for a surprise visit to scientists which. agreement with hamid karzai to mark the one year anniversary of the death of osama bin laden and the president trying to sell it is the beginning of the end of this war he said that the war began in afghanistan and would end there this decade of war he said that of course without acknowledging that we have multiple shot of wars going on that will remain ongoing in pakistan yemen and somalia and he said all that despite the fact that this strategic an agreement involves a commitment of ten more years past twenty four to a commitment of aid and assistance which no numbers have yet been given that he said the troops will continue to fight risk in lose their lives until two thousand and fourteen and some will beyond and he said it's because we have to end this war
10:46 pm
responsibly what does that even mean how do you end the longest conflict in u.s. history which has been a series of failures responsibly and more importantly how do you remind troops that they have an image and standards to uphold when the commander in chief has not responsibly laid out why they're still going to be there to what end the waltzer and out of this is say that there isn't a talk to be had with the commanders with the troops that a breakdown in leadership and discipline is not is a contributing factor to what's been going on well it's not brush over the obvious let's not ignore the fact that these troops have been overstretched over deployed all the command of the president and the military leadership who have not made their case for why.
10:47 pm
time for happy hour and joining me this evening are matt and peter's latke co-founders of double speak media guys. good to be very cold oh you got to show the viewers in case people didn't you know watch when you guys used to come on the show all the time because now you know years one of us in new york it was our own sad. but we still have a whole little special segment called the topic ha just for old time's sake great way on where you got there. or is it is still there are parents every friday i do it every morning for the day all right where do we begin obviously there is some big news this weekend when it came to the president or sing same sex marriage and the viewers know my thoughts on
10:48 pm
this very well but we were talking about how you should leave it up to the states for example north carolina or for example one more lady in lincoln nebraska this is a city council hearing this they are reviewing a proposed l.g.b. t. protection ordinance and so see when you leave it up to random people in the states to make decisions and you hear people go on rants like this take a listen. to why i don't. do used in holland by gays spies and orgy huge why did gays like to see people perishing. and i intend to to grow up sure in testimony more of me and more likely to be a fatality or shine through. i mean on the order i mean i don't even i don't even know i just say p. and i as goes into the anus i just like the guy in a straw in the background that just is like oh man oh man what's going on right about rudy lady you have to first of all substance side you have to thank the internet i mean like oh you know the fact that we can see that in real time that's
10:49 pm
just amazing but i mean did you hear actually the romney campaign hired this woman to be the eligibility outreach director i haven't heard that which are it's been confirmed i can confirm it today so i actually think it's a strong move and she's going to do a lot for that i mean this is probably you know some people think that gays cause earthquakes he clearly thinks that if they're gay the more chances are they are going to commit homicide yeah i love that they didn't cut her off to bed let her go for and i think hillary clinton part to do list that you have to listen the whole video she's only got to go on hillary clinton. to take some time with a martini and you know really listen to the whole. let's move on to another story not so funny actually so you know obviously in the wake of the trayvon martin case you would like to think that there is maybe has been some elevated discussion in the country about. about. what not but know some people are capitalizing off the trayvon martin story including this guy that created this target take a look. there's no face inside the hoodie but the bag of skittles and
10:50 pm
a bottle of iced tea makes it clear this paper target design for shooting practice is supposed to be trayvon martin for just eight dollars plus seven fifty shipping sharpshooters have been able to buy a ten pack of the targets online. i mean pretty nice list to say the least but the other thing is the guy says that in two days he's sold out i just don't understand who would buy that it's gusting but i mean it's it just speaks to like the underbelly culture that happens sometimes you know out of these tragedies everyone's coming together and then you have these crazy people yeah it's pretty pretty disgusting but it says a lot about where we are as a country and the fact that people are selling this is commerce and going to make money as you said i mean it's pretty very decisive people are buying it right and the idea is out there it can decide to sell something he says we're going to do you know there are going to be enough in there they're going to want to buy isn't down high all right let's move on to. the homicide we go to see all this group of
10:51 pm
interesting characters so obviously they had you know first hearing what will be the trial for seven is alleged coconspirators and there was a bit of a silent protest by case and the others to calais. throughout the hearing khalid shaikh muhammad in this alleged coconspirators were defiant refusing to answer the judge's questions look at him or even wear headsets so they could hear translations the defendant supported lawyers said the suspects were engaged in peaceful resistance to their treatment and the unjust military commission system. so they were you know protesting the fact that they have been detained at guantanamo bay they are protesting the torture they've been put through and this is one of those things where you know a lot of people been pushing for more transparency when it comes to these military commissions because if we tortured these people let them talk about the torture on the record why hide it but just as a good example of how overly classified everything is i mean if you saw those the
10:52 pm
old pictures of him beard as gray in the hearing his beard was dyed red and so people want to know like how does he the detainee at guantanamo bay i don't think how did they get the dye is beard and they can't tell us because it's classified or we haven't been told this but. this week to oh yeah is anyone like that connection there or maybe he was doing some there is a legal trick to do but did you see bin laden in the compound the bin laden was living in when they raided at they found just for men who are used to die before i do this video i figure there must have been in the field guide how to beat al qaeda they must have had a chapter on like looking ten years younger and feeling wonderful or something like that which you know i think is a lovely matter you know if i mean they're going to get out of it overnight by the cia you have to look and you don't really connect the chest hair the chest hair with that sure there was sort of open my brother looks like i when he in the middle and i was well but it's going to diet you know salt and pepper or whatever but i want to know how they died and that is classified information and why that was by
10:53 pm
the way you've got to be evil doers evil there's. some news when it comes to the end of the world obviously there are a million other you know theories out there we did the whole harold camping was that his name last year. so many people so. all their belongings pulled their kids out of school they thought that the you know the rapture was coming but a lot of people do not think that or you know according to the mayan calendar because it ends in december of two thousand and twelve that that's going to be the legit end of the world but they just found this other way older mayan calendar that in fact didn't end their. expiration date that's been placed on the maya calendar being only of the duration of thirteen bach to seize four hundred year periods and something that pop culture has placed on it one of the numbers on the wall will tune extends to a period of seventeen bhakti it's a clear indication that the my themselves were not sort of hemmed in by this finite
10:54 pm
conception of time. so this calendar is actually hundreds of year it dates back to the nineteenth century and so it's the earliest known mayan calendar and so you have to you have to wonder did they change their mind this is somewhere along the way like no actually the start making calendar this is really going to have a huge bummer because i cancelled my gym membership like six months ago thinking that the world is and being so i haven't gone i mean these are. horrible and now they were extending you know that the end of the world is extending now if you go back to the general think about that we were talking about this in our editorial meeting this morning which is that the most brilliant preppers out there if they really believe that the world is ending or the people just put it on credit no i think you're likely to start paying until twenty four to get your dark tape in your water because if you have the world's coming you have to be prepared these credit card companies are ruthless and even if the world ends like they're going after they go after someone like they know if i right or america given up even if it's
10:55 pm
and if so and so i would say payer i mean if there's this going to you know revolutionize things like. kind of kind of a you could happen to me. this is. interesting. this is the teacher in florida who she wanted to shame her students you know obviously it's not ok any word of the students or maybe is telling the optics school had him with the ruler and. the dunces she's just decided that she will put dog cones on her students to shame them. this is for hill special into the show medina one of several classmates who briefly wore a so-called coat of shame is her science class last month and since we're all using bad stuff she's like oh she thought it was funny to bring out on a sham and put it on. i don't put the big deal i mean like moralizing but it's not like they're not physically hard when you are an author there's going to start yeah
10:56 pm
you know it's going to be if you get if you put dazzle your cone like shame while you were growing up i swear i remember a time doing it by interviewing rather around the kind of shame because you would you have this thing where you would do something terrible but. he dealt with it and he's fine now but we're you know would you be ok if your kids went to school and got the kind of change that oh it's going to be mandatory i honestly i mean i read the article and i did a little research and it turns out like it was supposed to be a joke i think it was possibly a joke in this teacher was like having some fun i mean maybe it's not conventional but it's not conventional you know if i say not to mention it's pretty accurate but i love a little dog collar and i would wear one honestly out and i was feeling that this trend is going to go this is this is the beginning of the trial so kind of anybody else you know you're your beard you wear your cone of shame and like you're looking wonderful all right this last one i don't like want to play the clip because we don't have all that much time but. basically you know this shows you how much people really love their sports obviously ever a big caps fans here in d.c.
10:57 pm
but in arizona. coyote's you know they advance into the finals for the first time since one thousand nine hundred eighty six and it turns out that the talent actually waste nearly ten percent of its annual budget subsidizing the team even though they're completely broke i think that the city's obligated to make payments on the arena that which twelve point six million a year. have you have you been. you know years and years ago it's one hundred forty degrees today in arizona i would pay twelve million dollars to sit in an ice cube like i don't with their boating and maybe put a little zamboni you get those prices i just don't have bodies are don't they don't drive themselves well you know but it's where it's keep the people happy in times of you know economic and those are canadian dollars too so that's the problem our guys i got to wrap it up but they are joining me by already back on the show tonight that is it for tonight so thanks for tuning in and they actually come back on monday but in the meantime don't forget to become a fan of the a lot of show on facebook and follow us on twitter and if you missed anything that
