tonight on our t.v. get ready for a showdown police politicians and protesters are all in chicago for the nato summit we'll tell you what's happening right now and what demonstrators are demanding. plus get ready for the wrong paul revolution supporters are expected to come out in droves this weekend for the minnesota republican state convention duking it out for the delegates and the strategy can actually work. in history's right with salutes and flaws as is the history of any country from watergate to win or gate washington d.c. certainly has its fair share of political scandals and now you can experience of two for price we'll take you on a tour of some of the capital's folks. it's
7:01 pm
friday may eighteenth seven pm in washington d.c. i'm adding martin you're watching our t.v. so we can as the long awaited nato summit in chicago and things are heating up thousands of activists from across the country have all flooded in the city for a massive protests against the twenty eight member states and addition of the ordinance is created to limit protesters rights the city's already spent one million dollars on riot gear to anticipate the crackdown against protesters for more on the events on the ground here's our tease honest. the windy city of chicago turned sunny turned sour and the hometown of the u.s. president plays host to this year's nato summit nato is the u.s. commanded military alliance responsible for wars and war crimes on a global basis already the most watched city in the u.s. . as thousands of protesters begin to descend on chicago the city is in
7:02 pm
security overkill moat you've got a bunch of peaceful protesters here they spent millions and millions of dollars for this week alone i mean it's really absurd. police have reportedly c m two we raided the homes of protest organizers they battered down the door and made several arrests and we believe these are politically based arrests millions of dollars spent on new police gear trucks ready to function as rolling barricades businesses too are taking no chances what looks like a foreclosed building is actually a hotel in the heart of chicago plywood was put up in order to avoid windows being smashed by demonstrators flooding into the town and office workers have been advised to dress like protesters in order to not be targeted fashion all one planet meanwhile activists there to express their outrage at nato is aggressive policies are blocked off and kept as far away from world leaders as possible we're talking about a peaceful protest not only by peaceful people but peaceful people dedicated to the
7:03 pm
cause of peace against a military bloc the mightiest in human history and they are being portrayed as the force that needs to be protected while officials brace for riots know your rights training for demonstrators in your mind you know you are going to meetings and street action against the military block kick off nato is organization no longer has a mandate to occupy chicago denies and demands a nato disband they have no more purpose they're spending our taxpayer dollars on wars. and to bomb and destroy and murder civilians all over the world with ghana stand top of the leaders agenda protesters say it's time to put an end to the war. the only reason we're still in afghanistan is for rare earth minerals and opium the same reason the only reason we went into iraq with the steroids field for american oil companies is are purely economic rewards that are sold to the american public purely on propaganda it's garbage demonstrators want the money pumped into the
7:04 pm
summit and its security to be spent on relief there is no peace majority in the united states we oppose war we oppose the war world's preeminent war making organization. and we have a human agenda and a humane agenda that has no place for war but fences separating politicians from the people that human agenda is no more than a nuisance to be cordoned off if the hitcher going to chicago illinois so there you saw the windy city is being turned into a police state militarized riot gear l. rad machines and drones overhead things could get very interesting this weekend with massive protests expected to increase by the day joining me now with a preview of what's to come from the annual summit is our city correspondent i suspect you're going to. anastasio what what do you think is going to happen this weekend you think that the police state crackdowns really overhyped or do you think oh well i'll be right now we're in the heart of chicago in the downtown area and if
7:05 pm
you can see behind me there are several hundred protesters gathered there's dozens of police officers there are in fact helicopters hovering above ground like you mentioned police cars everywhere we saw a pretty big march taking place earlier today with the police following the protesters on horseback definitely getting very busy and the biggest action that we're expecting will be taking place throughout the weekend namely on sunday where a big march where tens of thousands of protesters are expected to show up for will be taking place a big chunk of the city will be closed off for this march to take place exactly how violent or intense things might get around here is still a big question we definitely can see that people are in fact quite worked up the protesters are saying they do intend to remain peaceful the but the police the officials the authorities in the city are definitely braced for anything that can happen including riots like we mentioned in that report over a million dollars has been spent on new riot gear for police officers so we're
7:06 pm
going to have to wait and see how events develop here through the throughout the next couple of days. there's for press are you guys going through checkpoints and shuttles and you mention free speech zones i mean where exactly are these free speech zones for the protesters and how far away are they from the nato head on well you know it's actually quite interesting because the convention place where the delegates will be gathering is an entire over two miles away from where the protesters are being held at sort of in an area that's barricaded off and it would probably take about twenty minutes or half an hour to get there by walking which would be quite complicated so the protesters are actually being kept quite far away from where the delegates will be gathering this will not be your typical protesters chanting across the street from the convention center like we have seen at previous summits this is definitely some. that the leaders want to have out of their hair for the next couple of days so. we don't think that the protesters will be able to get any closer to free zones in terms of where people are gathering they're literally gathering all over the city there are dozens of actions that have been
7:07 pm
taking place over the last couple of days with bigger or smaller groups taking place there was a pretty big action today organized by the nurses union which took place which gathered thousands of people we know that a couple of people have been arrested but it's definitely spread throughout the city and we are walking around we are looking for the action in terms of press getting to the convention center those who want to cover what the leaders are saying have shuttle buses taking them there and you mentioned just you know the lockdown kind of having to go through these procedures to get to the convention itself the d.h. us is actually declared all of chicago a special national security event do you think that this is a possibility that we can see this act of the federal restricted buildings and grounds where it says that you can't protest where there is secret service do you think that we could see that actually going into effect this weekend there. well we're testers can definitely not be around the venue where the leaders are gathering and that's certainly a big security measure that has been put in place and yes we are likely to see this
7:08 pm
being implemented on the ground since obviously the officials of the city and really the u.s. government has taken all the precautions to make sure that the protesters are kept as far away as possible of course we have to mention that the g eight summit was also supposed to take place here in chicago but got moved because of president obama's concerns because of the official concerns of exactly how many people would show up and exactly what kind of action would break out so now obviously the g. eight is not taking place here anymore nato protesters are here it is getting big right now we've been getting a sort of previews of what's to expect throughout the next couple of days it's pretty busy we are expecting thousands more people to show up how close they're going to try to actually get to the leaders we'll see but we do know that there are hundreds if not thousands of thousands of police officers that will be making sure to keep protesters away from that area. are the are the protesters there pretty much aware of the discussions that are going on nato and do they have any specific demands or is it just kind of a general upset about nato as an entity. well abby the protesters are definitely
7:09 pm
very well educated on what nato is all about they do know that this year's summit is going to be focusing on afghanistan people are very disappointed they're saying they want and and puts all wars not just assume they're disappointed with the billions of dollars and the fact that the united states is really spearheading this nato operation and is generally kind of overlooking what nato does the protesters are well aware of what the delegates will be discussing they disagree with the issues they think that they call themselves many of the people along the lines of the occupy wall street movement what that was all about they're saying they are the ninety nine percent they are disappointed with the fact that leaders are not hearing their messages and of course the like would like to be able to heard by the leaders of fifty states that are gathering here to. listen to what they're saying whether or not that's going to be heard is a very unlikely because of the distance really both literally and physically that has been put between the protesters and the leaders one has to wonder if this will
7:10 pm
just keep getting worse with every time there's a meeting of the minds and will definitely see what what i'm folds this weekend thanks so much for your coverage that was our to correspondent on stasia churkin. he's the candidate the corporate owned press and mainstream two party system a love hate as the other g.o.p. candidates have drop like flies ron paul still in it for the long haul even though he suspended his campaign in states where primaries haven't been held he's still going full force to the convention and continues to pick up delegates along the way so what is going to happen at the convention and where is it all going to go from there for more on ron paul strategy i was joined earlier by brian doherty senior editor reason dot com and author of the book the ron paul revolution. it makes sense that he's not going to spend a lot of money he doesn't have you know buying ads or sending his body around to these primary states though i do think it's a p.r. move the announcement was perhaps
7:11 pm
a little misguided because it was spun by all too many people in the media as paul drops out and as if the ron paul story is over but it is very much not over even this weekend the state of minnesota is having the convention where it picks its delegation to the national convention and it looks almost certain that ron paul is going to win that state as well that will be a second state he's winning he's looking good in louisiana in missouri as well and he is going to come into that convention in tampa not just a fringe candidate but a strong number two to mitt romney the last competitor standing in his libertarian wing of the party is going to make a splash and they're going to tell the republican party look we are here and we cannot be ignored so at this point it's more of a symbolic gesture to kind of show their force and really create create this division within the g.o.p. to say hey listen we obviously have a lot of pull and we're strong force to be reckoned with but what do you think it's going to do to the g.o.p. divide i mean you have the neo conservative this archaic neo cons on the right and
7:12 pm
it's extreme divide with these new libertarian. ron paul supporters i mean what do you think's going to happen there. yes i do want to say that while it is symbolic it is not just symbolic because another thing the paul people have been doing not just racking up delegates but also having their people take over positions of authority within the state party structures iowa and alaska now their state chairman are both strong wrong paul people so the ron paul people are going to be the people doing the sort of low level work of party apparatus and that's going to be very important to the kind of candidates the party puts forward the kind of candidates they support how important is going to be really depends obviously on whether romney wins or not if romney is the nominee and he loses and we can see that one of the reasons he lost is that he was not able to keep the votes in the enthusiasm of the paul people that's going to anger the republican party in the short term but i do think it will scare them straight about the notion that we need to put forward the party need to put forward candidates that are serious about
7:13 pm
cutting spending that don't defend bailouts that actually have consistent small government records and ron paul was the only one in the race who did brian you know in two thousand a my brother and a lot of other people i know voted for ron paul in the primaries and they were really disappointed when he didn't when he didn't go for and run independent and i know that you said he doesn't have a lot of money to spend and that might be the reason why he kind of made this decision but do you think that he has a he would possibly run third party or independent this time i mean it is his last hurrah. i will say what dr paul always says which is that he doesn't plan on it of course he also never says absolutely one hundred percent i won't do it the legal deadlines to do that are getting very close every state is different but basically through the summer if you haven't done the work to get your name on the ballot you can't really do an independent run i don't expect him to do it because his campaign has clearly made the decision that hey we're doing well enough within the republican party the republican party is one of the major vehicles of power in
7:14 pm
this country let's try to move ahead and influence that party because third party runs never actually do well in the country i mean those are purely symbolic moves and the paul campaign feels that they are making headway in the republican party and it's not worth ruining all that progress by failed there but what about all his supporters i mean they really i mean it's really ron paul or die for that and i mean this is a no nonsense two thousand and they've done and no means of dollars to his campaign and money bombs he's been doing have garnered so many so much money do you think that's kind of taking the money and running. no not at all i mean he spent the money the campaign that he ran a campaign the campaign is down to around a million dollars it is worth pointing out that he raised nearly twice as nearly as much rather as both gingrich and santorum combined his people are the giving people in the republican party and if you wanted to raise more he could and his people are going to be extremely disappointed obviously that ron paul is not going to end up being the nominee and mitt romney cannot count on winning their vote my prediction
7:15 pm
the people talk about where is the ron paul vote going to go as if the ron paul vote is this thing that has to exist in fact the ron paul vote was created by ron paul and without ron paul i'm going to guess that more than half of it is going to dissipate they're going to continue being active in politics but they're not necessarily going to cast their vote for president what about what about the delegates at the dance or what about the delegates at the convention notice on the some pretty quickly i mean he's he's already come out and said it's not going towards gary johnson and he's kind of held off on saying his indorsement for mitt romney which i find strange but i mean where do you think the delegates are to do once they are there i mean they're going to vote for ron paul. all right i'm going to vote for ron paul that's what they're there to do yeah i don't i think it is extremely unlikely that paul endorse romney to do so would dissipate the goodwill of his fans in a really dangerous away be a very foolish move for paul to do that well it's an exciting time for the g.o.p. and really to see where this is going well it's great that that there is
7:16 pm
a change and a shift in policy and what i think we keep an eye at that was brian doherty senior editor of reason dot com the author of ron paul revolution the man and the movement he inspired. still ahead on our team it's tourist season in our nation's capital but families are not coming to brush up on our political successes or rather on their scandals details on where the district's hot spots are next. r t is the state run english speaking russian channel it's kind of like al-jazeera . russia today has an extremely confrontational stance when it comes to us.
7:17 pm
we just put a picture of me when i was like nine years old when she told the truth. because as in i am a total get of friends that i was driving hip hop music and street. she was kind of yesterday. i'm very proud of the world with its place. of the of the. merrier. welcome to the aloneness so they'll get the real headline with none of them are the problem with the mainstream media today is that they're completely disconnected from the viewers and what actually matters to those viewers and so that's why young people just don't watch t.v. anymore if they want news they go online and read it but we're trying to take those
7:18 pm
stories that people actually care about and transfer them back to t.v. . mr. what drives the world the fear mongering used by politicians who makes decisions to break through it's already been made who can you trust no one. is your view with the global machinery which is where we had a state controlled capital score fashion so when nobody dares to
7:19 pm
ask we do our t. question more. seat the scandalous couple of america whether it's watergate or win or gate seems like politicians are always trying to cover their tracks in fact it's so prevalent here that d.c. has their own tour given an overview notable scandals and history. went to the more. we're going to make our way up through the treasury building and you know there are many ways to see d.c. began and many things to see that you know general there aren't but hidden in the shadows of the grand architecture on these renowned streets. an intriguing history you do you also learn about. that fourteenth in age was the former port unquote porno district of d.c.
7:20 pm
he grabs a couple pistols and he runs out the door and was distinguishing mark on this dress there's a semen stain on the dress new to the washington d.c. tour circuit is the d.c. scandal tour we'd love scandals in american history is rife with flukes and flaws as is the history of any country there seems to be an inordinate amount here in washington why is that i think it's a power play you know everyone wants lowkey want higher power and the powerful think they can do anything and yet power will corrupt people in power they really push fear mongering perspective on the american citizen re and to a great degree you could say that who's the father of fear mongering the united states. and unequivocally i can say this j. edgar hoover it's no surprise then that this was one of the stops on the tour but as we know scandal comes in many forms as to be expected an overarching theme was
7:21 pm
sex and all the politicians caught with their pants down or with women who weren't their wives apparently and happen all the time where i'm standing right here the side of a very popular strip club in the seventy's called the silver slipper and then there are those scandals that have it all politics sex and drugs we start here at d.c. city hall to talk about one of the city's former mayors who still reports here to work and the city councilman i'm talking of course about marion barry bitch said i'll be goddammed that bitch that bitch did that to me from the set ups of sung to the get up of others. this tour covered it all like benjamin franklin he would wear a coonskin cap and you know the various ladies for hire on the street thought that was a rather rambunctious move and would compete for him and his attention scandal it
7:22 pm
seems one of the few constants throughout history. and social relations that one. of the committee to relate nixon eventually was found to have broke into the watergate what is it that people love about scandals. well a little bit of the humor of it will give us large amounts of society start to deify some of our founding fathers. past the point of realizing they were also just human beings. a look back of a different kind and a new perspective on how something just never change. in washington christine freezone. clearly the city is not only full of corruption but as but scandal as well so why is the political fishbowl d.c. so scandalous joining me now is comedian. saad hey. thanks for
7:23 pm
joining us so why do you think it is i mean everyone's watching d.c. why do you think it is that these politicians think that they can just get away with anything. i don't know it's just a lot of people with a lot of power concentrated in a one small location and i think the the collective testosterone makes that crazy and have scandals all over the city as it's a great tour so is it just a power trip i mean you hear of clinton having sex with you know the cigar thing in the in the oval office i mean anthony weiner things you can get away with treating photos of as janet just like what the what you know what gets into these people. all i mean i think it's really funny because what the disco like i think the scandal tour is making it seem like d.c. is just chock full of these scandals and of course there are scandals but there if you really look at compared to the numbers they're kind of few and far between
7:24 pm
because at the end of the day we're congressional reparative representatives at least spend their time doing almost every day is going to fundraisers and sometimes two or three fundraisers that's literally how they spend most of their time is like going to really drab rooms where the orders have do small talk beg for money you know and stuffed mushrooms they don't actually spend that much time getting stuff to themselves but they do they do you know i think like these kinds of you know we like to we like to make scandal seem so big and huge and they take over but at the end of the day i kind of think the lives of d.c. represent at least a raps are kind of boring in that. more monday in. pain to be you know one thing that really did you know was john edwards i mean here you have the. good or good old boy and then you hear. in the air
7:25 pm
what were you surprised. i'm surprised by anything. having an affair ever experience if you're a woman you probably aren't. even on the other side of the leg so that's not surprising at all right but so i ever. read you know what i think is funny is that these tours are kind of say you know don't go to the smithsonian or the lincoln memorial that's just the places where history happened. you should come see this hotel were called girl lost her bra you know like that's what i think is funny that a lot of people are picking up on that it's kind of like the they end up being like the reality t.v. of tours you know a guilty pleasure we just can't repair our eyes away from. excel and i wanted to play this quick montage of when the scandal broke out. wieners wiener as we heard
7:26 pm
wiener wieners wiener and we. wiener gate it certainly doesn't look familiar to me everyone's focused on a scandal that has you know too many puns for its own good sometimes these things happen. but i mean seriously i mean the media the way the media covers these things very do you think that this is just a distraction from the real issues the real scandal that are going on like you know bankers. absolutely i actually think that whenever the media cover something like this their tone changes right it becomes something like did you hear what happens for warner this is what you know and it becomes they become animated and suddenly everything becomes exciting once we use that same tone when it's like a new literacy program or something like you know there's a new literacy program you know if we use the same tone of maybe we can get people more excited about like h.r.
7:27 pm
three fifty two or whatever it is that's actually happening in capitol hill what do you think it is about this country i mean do you think this country is actually repressed in the way why do you perfect this. that we just can't draw our eyes away from it. it's like we're all it's like we're all catholic priests or something we've been it's you know where did nine ourselves at so much so that we then lash out and do things that are reliably embarrassing where if we just give ourselves a little bit more room you know these level there wouldn't be so many penis photos online you know that's i think where what's going on is that there's we should i think we should just come out i think the french have a really good attitude about this they know that nearly every french president has had affair. but they don't actually think of them as scandals that's the difference they just are sort of like if you know let's eat a baguette and i think that is
7:28 pm
a really healthy way of looking at it because. i think ultimately it is a time waster and it is interesting that you say that because when j.f.k. was president it was known that he was having multiple marilyn monroe i mean prostitutes of the white house and jackie onassis just but then you didn't have the tabloids really honing in on it like the queen or a monica lewinsky or a not just like business what everyone should care about i mean it's just just it's . interesting now back in shape the dialogue so much absolutely people with people in those days we've all seen mad men people just got wasted at work they temporal friends in the city and then and news happened once a day just once a day news happens and you would tune in for those thirty minutes a day of that you'd be like oh i got a plentiful plate of news but now it's like a boss say you know what i mean we're stuffing ourselves was worth so much ridiculous news that like you just have to just you know sling it out there
7:29 pm
constantly whatever it is and whatever the quality of the news right be you know so so you know the more we in our gates i guess. it is interesting i mean this whole when arnold schwarzenegger love child thing came out i couldn't help but wonder you know do all politicians have these scandalous things under their belt and if someone kind of is waiting to release them or it seems like almost every politician some sort of scandal or another and they just. it's just really really interesting like the larry craig thing i mean the you know and like is it chicken is it i feel like it those are the questions like is it chicken or the egg are you the kind of person that totally has affairs or cheats or lies about your sexuality and also therefore want to become a politician or are you a politician first and then the state you know and then there's a desire to assert your power. base so if you're coming on to talk about this issue and interesting one that was comedian.
