with a look back at the past seven days top stories and the latest developments this is the weekly. nato summit in chicago is being greeted by crowds of activists pouring into the city streets to protest against the blocs costly and deadly wars saturday saw clashes with police and further arrests with the protesters pledging their numbers will swell over the next two days it is a start the chicken is in chicago and started yesterday's rally was met with a strong police response what's going on today. well bill today's actions are just getting started we have been seeing out thousands of people thousands of protesters swelling into grant park where we are right now this is the heart of chicago a very big park about two miles away from the convention center. course all of these protesters are being kept quiet far away from when the leave from where the leaders are meeting we are seeing thousands of people here now we are expecting a big march that some are estimated estimating might attract as many as ten

thousand people to kick off very shortly there were in fact clashes with police taking place last night we were really in the in the in the mix of this action bringing that to our viewers we saw. bicycles to try to scare away protesters and make them move away we saw one female protester with her entire face bleeding there have we're not sure about the numbers of arrests we know that ugly over ten people have been arrested here throughout the last several days of auctions of course groups of activists have been meeting here. throughout those days this day here today is expected to turn really an action of all of these people gathered here and interesting really it's not just the occupy wall street movement that's flooded here from all across the united states it's people of all walks of life we're seeing women with children we're seeing seniors we're seeing even a disabled people here and it's really a. cry of what to expect today and of course certainly will be here to bring our

viewers all the latest as events in a row we can just tell you a lot of the in chicago anastacia check in a thanks very much indeed well the nato summit which will see more talks on the fate of its afghan mission today some of the blocks key member states such as france australia are preparing to make its u.s. based antiwar activists live bolger says it's time for nato members to stop dancing to washington's tunes. and there's probably all kinds of pressure that we don't see overtly you know economic and political pressure to do what led to the u.s. wants my feeling is that should be dissolved and i applaud france for removing its troops from this illegal war of u.s. and imperial aggression i wish all nato troops would refuse to do the bidding of the united states in our in our foreign policy so. you know the summit i
2:04 pm
understand the focus of this summit is to talk about afghanistan. wrongly hope that that that nato will come to realize that they are being used as as puppets of the american government that they are being used to do our dirty work . well for more on what's driving the protest movement in chicago i'm joined by kevin zeese he's an antiwar campaigner he's taking part in those protests now you're a member of the movement which is staging these demonstrations there in chicago what sort of support are you getting who exactly is taking part in these demonstrations with you. i say it's a pretty broad range of people you have a wide range of ages from college and college up to oak by senior citizens you have a diversity of color race so i think it's a nice mix of people and the people here are basically concerned that we're continuing the war in afghanistan that president obama just signed agreement with
2:05 pm
the president. when i saw him look since the accident of twenty four teams out. here right sore about this kevin little frustration frustrating. looks if we've lost that contact with you we could just try once again you were talking about nato you tell us more about your concerns about nato as an organization and what has been up here recently. well nato seems to be the group that is the dirty work of the us empire when they can't get the un to go along you saw it in libya you see in afghanistan it's another military arm of the united states and the and the us empire and its client state so because we want to see nato and the fact veterans for peace which is a u.s. veterans group try to deliver a letter you say to nato nato officials refuse to even accept it and they're calling for the disbandment of nato nato was a relic of the past is no longer needed it's causing more division than unity among
2:06 pm
nations and it's time first move beyond military solutions way from an empire and start to become a community of nations when after its campaign in afghanistan what would the role of nato be what would its future be would that perhaps be the end of nato that's what you'd like to say well i think you know you saw afghanistan and you saw a libya and i think that's the real deal hopes a play in the future i hope that that ends you know we don't need to be seeing militaristically vision between countries we need instead we see countries working together to solve the incredible common problems that we're facing from climate change and poverty an equal distribution of wealth these are all issues that the faces we work together to solve them rather than we were spending resources on wars and military divisions nevertheless nato says it is planning to pull out of afghanistan by two thousand and twelve but some u.s. troops will be staying on there for at least another ten years at what will lend that presence be any different from nato its current military mission that was
2:07 pm
going happen while you know we don't really know yet all they have done is sign agreements as was stated twenty twenty four. we are not the means who would be involved will never stand a bad will some you know countries they involve we don't know the answer is that you're going to residual force in the tens of thousands there's also talk of lots of money for the afghan military the truth is the current afghan government would not stand without u.s. support and that's right because i signed this agreement you know that without u.s. backing we'll see we'll see all different government in afghanistan when not certainly we united states kevin zeese thanks very much thanks for coping there with the pretty poor communication there between moscow and chicago but we had everything you pretty much had to say thank you and kevin zeese thank you. and r.t. will continue pretty new coverage of that nato summit and how it's echoing on the streets of chicago throughout today sunday and monday.

syphilitic going. to believing the legacy of atrocity. to stay or not to stay that is the question facing greece's political instability catapult it towards an exit from the euro zone however the leaders of some of the world's most powerful economies who gather for talks in the u.s. publicly declaring it should stay put behind the smalls and handshakes analysts saw concern and a desire to see greece and he said now it is the g eight summit. camp david was invaded by the europeans over the weekend or at least it seemed that way with almost all of the g eight talk touching the euro zone zone and there were new faces all focus was on a not so new an ever growing crisis and the million dollar question of could greece

be corrupt loose and leave the euro zone practically every financial analyst thinks that greece will leave it has to be an orderly withdrawal from the euro anything else would be disaster the official mantra from a new door to fear with most do everything so the greeks are able to stay in the euro zone. to me and that was once again the united stance of this camp david summit wrapped up but plan b. is already in place officials in brussels have a back up just in case and germany has been hinting a referendum on a euro exit could be greece's best bet to believe the smiles and handshakes are just damage control i think this is just trying to predict put a pretty face on it does hope to ms or so when the markets open monday they can have some good news to report but some media are more concerned with who was not a camp david then what was president putin says he's busy with his cabinet this
2:10 pm
weekend others think he's steamed over the street protests lots of speculation as to why putin skipped this g. eight but very little based on logic president putin couldn't really contribute anything to a solution he could say right you have to solve your debt problem germany perhaps should in fact extend more danger to other weak members of the european union and so on but basically he'd be a bystander not the case for obama who in an election year can't afford to let euro zone fall out worsen the u.s. economy russia sees this summit as a stop on the way to june g. twenty where putin and obama. well sitting down for talks with the g. twenty it focuses on a wider range of issues much more pressing to countries like russia and china who seem to have greater expectations from the broader format especially when it comes to financial turmoil and making sure all global issues make the cut reporting from
2:11 pm
the g. eight at camp david and he said now a hearty sincere or not the once deafening chorus calling for greece to stay is no mere chant but marcus kerber professor of political economy economics at the berlin institute of technology says but now even a greek exit won't be enough to save the euro the unconditional. euro savers as they are now prisoners of their own misjudgments their errors of judgment turn out to be fatal because the crisis about the euro is on far more than just a currency it's about the future integration of europe and we have come to a point where we can no longer solve the euro crisis by simply urging or pushing or requesting greece to opt out and to leave the eurozone because the problems are far beyond that we could have some two years ago when the crisis was a very beginning so the discussion is no longer about greece the discussion is no

longer about whether germany is profiting or benefiting less or more from the you from the eurozone the question is how we can get the problem solved as quickly as possible without damaging the european integration process. this is the weekly here on r.t. we will be to twenty four hours a day still to come this hour blame game in syria a series of deadly blast ripped through the conflict torn country raising concerns that foreign powers are playing an increasing part in it. and learning the hard way we bring you more on what's left of egypt's security in the wake of the uprising and help people are surviving amid the chaos on the streets. the awning kingdom of bahrain is now off america's weapons export blacklist with gun sales about to resume now despite an often bloody government crackdown on a popular uprising against the ruling monarchy and that is going to can suggests

that in keeping with washington selective approach to just who deserves freedom. that was the image bahrain's persistent crackdown on protesters journalists and human rights activists that washington welcomes bahrain's crown prince abdullah has brought to the united states. and pledges to resume arms supplies to a key ally in the gulf. the u.s. had suspended weapons sales to bahrain in the light of massive human rights violations by these sorties there but now the state department has issued a statement saying that american weapons will soon be heading to bahrain again. we've made this decision i want to emphasize on national security grounds we've made this decision mindful of the fact that there remain a number of serious unresolved human rights issues in bahrain which we expect the government of bahrain to address bahrain host the u.s.
