we want to present. something you know. it's really bad news for president obama's reelection efforts monthly unemployment numbers in america jumping for the first time in about a year rising to eight point two percent topping the news today as the american economy takes another dive the mainstream media and politicians on both sides are spinning the latest job numbers in their favor no surprise there but what does this really mean for president obama and for your wallet. plus it appears that the olympic games are happening right here in the u.s. and the obama administration is getting a gold medal in cyber espionage it's a series of sophisticated cyber attacks targeting among other things iran's nuclear nuclear program so could this be a declaration of cyber war on our program. and
8:01 pm
shedding light on the ever elusive builder berggruen right now just a hop skip and a jump away from washington d.c. the world's movers and shakers are meeting in secret parties abby martin was live on the scene earlier to show us what's been happening. well good evening it is friday june first eight pm in washington d.c. my name is christine for soule you're watching our t.v. . well as i said the first of june but also the start of hurricane season and guess what it appears the first storm has already arrived in the form of today's jobs numbers and to say the least they're not good according to the labor department u.s. employers created only sixty nine thousand new jobs in the month of may that is less than half of what was anticipated by economic analysts and also the worst level of job creation in more than a year and for the first time in eleven months the unemployment rate actually rose
8:02 pm
going up to eight point two percent from eight point one percent and it doesn't stop there the u.s. labor department also revised the numbers for march and april and determine that hiring in those two months was actually lower than previously recorded to take us to the next level and i talk about the implications of these numbers on a larger scale economically and politically i was joined by a role in a more i executive director of oppenheimer. the story is not a single story it's a continuing story for the last three and a half years as we were into the reception recession in two years ago of course we came out but there's been no real progress you know in the last sixty years we've had four major recessions this recession has had the weakest or most mean growth in terms of g.d.p. in terms of employment all of them before i mean we're half the rate i mean it's been weak it's been anemic but for eleven months in a row the unemployment rate went down new jobs are continually created well you've
8:03 pm
got to remember you need ninety thousand jobs or hundred thousand jobs every month just to keep pace with the population growth so if you don't get that many you're actually losing ground you've got to remember the unemployment number is a relative a son that's we never see what happens is people who go on unemployment to get surveyed they check the box yes i'm unemployed when they stop looking for a job through no longer and so in the past year that's really what we've seen where people have it or so given up looking i mean i think the unofficial rate or the amount of the population which is not employed that would like to be is probably closer to nineteen eighteen percent i've heard those numbers as well i do want to put up because we like to look at this from all angles angles so i want to put up another interpretation of these numbers the story they might be telling this is a former employer employee of goldman sachs he predicts that we're about to see the quote biggest banking crisis in history i'm going to put out this this chart on our
8:04 pm
screen i have you take a look the line shows the percentage of the u.s. population that's employed and that goes through the first half of this year now mr paul spoke about his findings in a presentation called the end game and basically says there is no longer an engine of growth that all the major world economies seem to be stalling at once. it's kind of frightening when you take a look at this. do you do you agree or agree it's frightening it's not surprising never let's look at what the major economies are doing in the us in europe the theme has been consistent which is raise taxes and let's keep on spending we've actually gotten to that point we've gotten to the tipping point and done you more of everything's going to fall apart that's what's happening we need a different type of policy yes we have to cut spending we kill with beyond our means but we can't choke the the investors the businesses that make jobs that that
8:05 pm
create the capital or in our in our country we can't keep punishing them because they're punishing the what do you think is more money need to be printed oh no absolutely not what we need to do is get out of the way there's this you know in the last three and a half years taxes being raised regulations have grown exponentially at a rate we've never seen before in which it does it's killed the economy just go back to the one nine hundred eighty we had a recession that was just his dad was a do they cut taxes they cut regulations set off thirty years thirty years of global growth that we had never seen before do we all have amnesia yes but you're saying that that you know by changing the course here that that means the job creators are going to start opening factories and i mean that there have been you know things done to try to give some of these corporations a break i mean look at our largest corporations in this country they don't pay taxes and yet they're not creating more jobs they're just getting great people and their profits some of the biggest profit makers in this country the auto companies
8:06 pm
for example their profits keep growing you know first of all eighty percent of the job and eighty percent of the economy is not created by the big corporations the big corporations are international they're not us anymore eighty percent of the jobs in this country and the g.d.p. growth comes from mom and pop the people who run the businesses of two hundred employees or tree or four hundred we are punishing them there has been a so in what ways are they. what are some reading it's barriers. first of all regulation the regulation has been smothering look at health care that alone is is worth at least one third of all the problems ok and then they've had wardak so they should have to not we should say as a government you don't have to provide health care for your employees that does not know what we've done is we've basically nationalized health care we've increased its cost it's not that that's the bottom line they can afford it i can't afford it you can't afford it i mean but isn't that more because you know there's
8:07 pm
a lot of i mean there's a million reasons i'm sure why health care and health care costs increase but between you know pharmaceutical companies between health care being so much more expensive in this country than other countries how do you bring the cost of health care down the privatized. you don't let the government run it you do it the way every single industry that's finally had a rebirth in this world since time immemorial almost privatized the team england which has an all single payer system you know they're actually going to start privatizing it to cut costs it never fails but then again we always forget about the good things and we always put in the elements at the work i don't get it well we're not the only people that do this certainly if we take a look at the mainstream media they like to do this a lot it's always fun on jobs numbers days to kind of look at the different ways that some of the different media outlets interpret what the numbers mean and so we did a little experiment we went on a couple different websites just to see the different ways that they're sort of showing the meaning of these numbers so i want to put
8:08 pm
a couple up let's start with fox news they have a very large headline on their web site it says does another month of distressing economic news put the obama campaign on the clock that's a very large banner front and center on their web site let's go over to m s n b c their news and here's their take it says the global economic woes appear to ensnare the u.s. at the medium size headline my fan and home page actually didn't have anything that about the job numbers because the george zimmerman news had just come through that he may have to go to jail so what do you think what do you think this was a political filter filter way look at the reality look at g.d.p. growth look at unemployment look at look at what's happening in reality it's eerie hard you know we get into the silly season now and seven eight months we're going to elect have a presidential election five months and a lot of times i know that any way you believe it anyway my point is you're looking at political through a political lens take that away look at it realistically and that's really we have
8:09 pm
to see an economy that's struggling to realize in one thousand nine hundred two at this point or even earlier into the recovery the g.d.p. growth was eight percent g.d.p. was one and a half percent last quarter here. something wrong with the economy take the politics away the politics aren't making it better and they're not making it worse we need a better course to go on we can take the politics away but certainly the jobs numbers the way people are feeling about the economy has a reflection on what they're what they're going to vote who they're going to vote or do you think president obama is in trouble. you know i don't make political dust occasions but i do believe one thing every presidential election or for an incumbent is really a referendum on the presidency that necessarily a choice between two candidates and i think history has shown that it's it's really a referendum would say that the american people say what do you think i mean do you
8:10 pm
expect that we will continue to see the unemployment rate go up in the next few months i know you don't wrestle and. you know what no i don't know if it's going to go up i mean it's that are you asking them to get a lot worse probably not is it to go up better i don't think so we have fundamental structural problems that need to be fixed until those are changed is an art to say that anything in any direction was going to move europe over the last sixty years is half the growth rate of the us now that we're like them maybe we're in this the new the new new or the new now is going to be this half growth and high unemployment rate i mean where we're imitating them and then they're this spend their spare one which they spend and so forth certainly is interesting to look at it from as many different perspectives as possible appreciate having you on the show roland amaury thanks so much. well we already know there's a whole lot of things discussed within the walls of the white house that we don't know about but it seems there are a series of secret wars that have been waged as part of a program started by president george w.
8:11 pm
bush and continued with vigor by president obama it's called the olympic games and one example of this came in the form of a cyber worm that outsiders referred to as stocks net it was sent in to iran with a couple years ago to disrupt certain aspects of their nuclear program well it turns out the u.s. and israel were behind that they developed it carried it out so are you surprised why you shouldn't because we've been telling you about this for more than a year now and david sanger of the new york times is now saying it is well his article published today says quote it appears to be the first time the united states has repeatedly used cyber weapons to cripple another country's infrastructure achieving with computer code what until then could only be accomplished by bombing a country or sending agents to plant explosives so let's talk a little bit more about this not just the cyber attacks but also the message that we as citizens have been hearing from those on the inside the message is very
8:12 pm
different than what turns out has actually been happening so let's go now to declan mccullagh chief political correspondent for seen at hey there declan i guess first i just want to get your reaction to this news that it was in fact the u.s. and israel behind stuxnet that and other similar programs. well i first want to say that this is very good reporting by david sanger who's of the new york times is washington bureau i think he was there and she d.c. correspondent does part of a book is coming out next week and in some of the times is running it so that's why this is really nicely done my reaction to this is what we thought was the case everyone had pretty much assumed that it's the u.s. and or israel probably working together what we didn't know was that this was a program put in place by george w. bush and then president obama continued it so with the details especially the white house's involvement we didn't know but the u.s. is really you know that was the general assumption before today yes certainly an
8:13 pm
interesting article by david sanger it seems this is just a small portion of some of the what he's learned in terms of the number of secret wars that have been going on of course we saw also in the new york times a week ago about obama's kill list what do you make of this tackling that so much is going on inside the white house and now it is technology based. well what i would like this is more as a voter a citizen a journalist stephen is if we are going to clear a war on someone last i checked the u.s. constitution gives the congress the legislative branch the power to declare war so we're talking about cyber war we're talking about drone wars about but this can't be wars must congress declares them but they did we have a declared war in vietnam and korea and so on so this is the i'm in a minority here but if there is world like it to at least follow the constitutional process that's my first take this the second take is we're going to see much more of the same ones once you give the executive branch this kind of power they like it
8:14 pm
that according to the new york times piece this is one of the two programs the second being the drone program that president bush told his successor that you know you got to keep this one going yeah it was really interesting i don't know declan if you are in the minority i think a lot of people are a little murky on all the details and don't really understand how many times certain wars have been launched of course calling it war a lot of times you know the executive branch just sort of gets around it by calling it something else let's move on though you know it's interesting to me because based on what many of our leaders have been telling us we should be afraid of this thing happening to us of other countries launching cyber attacks on our internet just for a second act i want to play a few examples of a weapon of mass disruption you could have a cyber attack that would be as consequential in terms of the economy maybe even in terms of loss of life as things we typically use or say with more frightening next pearl harbor that we confront could very well be
8:15 pm
a cyber attack that cripples our power systems certainly our grid acts of terror could come not only from a few extremists in suicide vests but from a few keystrokes on the computer so i mean do you think it's interesting that all that land that everything that we've been warned about is actually you know by our government is actually what our government is doing. well i'm not sure the u.s. is the worst offender and that in this respect. a lot of governments probably every government says a look look at these bad things happening over there and internally let's not worry too much about privacy and free speech as complain when everyone else but this is this is this is an interesting situation when you have the government of bill able to rephrase that the u.s. was the first nation as far as we know to launch a cyber attack against an infrastructure that was not going to be the last and does infrastructure mean that your neighborhood water or sewage processing plant is an
8:16 pm
electricity i don't know but i mean if i were if i was in a radium government official and i now and now this is what virtually confirmed in the york times that the president was involved it might want to get a bit of revenge and maybe some some maybe some civilian targets in the u.s. for a little less armored than say military targets would be so i this is going to be an interesting next few years absolutely and i do think it's important when we talk about situations like this you know to show that perspective that iranian perspective so i want to play really quick something that the iranian foreign ministry spokesperson said in how this is an electronic war by the enemies of iran that can be listed under their attempts to prevent iran from acquiring peaceful nuclear power but it's a failure attempt as not a single part of the shore facility was affected or harmed by the virus and it was destroyed completely so here we have on one hand you know what's happening you know
8:17 pm
these cyber attacks and then we have sort of how it's interpreted how that information is put out to the people and they seem to be denying that this even happened. well i think it's i mean. it's difficult to get back to because you're lying as a journalist unnamed sources anonymous sources and you're dealing with government zine propaganda we all sides but it seems likely that the stuxnet malware did accomplish its intended result at least to some extent how quickly the iranians were able to get things back on line how much of an impact it really had i don't know but it it did have some impact i think and if it had an impact it might is that an act of war i think that's an important point a lot of people reading this article perhaps surprised perhaps even saying well the globe ocracy there not a lot of people bummed out that the u.s. is using technology to interfere with the nuclear program or our so-called nuclear
8:18 pm
program in iran it's interesting declan here in washington in congress it seems the timing is pretty good because a lot of lawmakers are currently asking for more funding more money to go to fund cyber security the executive branch you know in the courts right now we're seeing the executive branch wanting to get out of following certain rules under you know security and secrecy because they need you know to be able to do what they need to do without revealing the state secrets so do you think that that more as more and more reports like this come out with as david sanger's book comes out that this is only going to bolster the cause and help the case of those trying to make cyber security more of an issue here. well it's hard to say mean we've talked about this before and if you look at the incentives it's always useful to look at incentives in political debates with fewer government official and you have an incentive to exaggerate the threat so you get a larger budget if your homeland security contractor about way beyond your
8:19 pm
incentive to exaggerate this so then you can get a contract and so there's one exaggeration going on and some of the proposals being put forward i mean assist. in the house of representatives approved it is probably dead in the senate but the senate has its own bill with its own problems i mean with that because you have members of congress who are not computer scientists not do not understand the technology who they believe they believe the generals are they believe the contractors and this is why we're seeing one reason why we're seeing some of this bad legislation yeah absolutely declan mccullagh always good to talk to you declan is the chief political correspondent for saying that always good to see you. all right well if you're anything like me you're connected during most of the day whether it's through e-mail twitter facebook. you know whether it's for people far away or those right at your desk social media is a big deal but
8:20 pm
a lot of people are actually changing their attitude deciding you know what i don't really care what my third grade best friend had for breakfast today or finance with the resident dot net take a look at this and ask people on the streets of new york city if their appetite for social media is subsiding. social media websites have been making headlines for years is the crazy coming to an end anytime soon this week let's talk about that do you use social media i use to actually just lead in my face why am i just getting tired of it ties trying to keep up with everyone do you think the world is getting a little bit over social media yeah a little bit because you know when mom start using social media it's time to go my grandma is actually using it do you know why not because i don't like being tried to like go like putting too much of my bills or information on just going to social
8:21 pm
networks a photo you through i love you want professionals like linked in but the like people like public ones like in this to be very specific to be there you sort of it's not you some people put a little too much information on there i think you know why do we care about what people eat and what they're doing every factory and every meal they you know but it's a good way to keep in touch with people too so what about the phone what about you know going over to your neighbor's house and saying hi exactly i think people are getting away from that and it's too easy to just do it all online now days i think there's a lot of good uses for there are some uses we found in the school system not so good like what some of the bullying that goes on and i think there's too many young people are kind of think what's the big deal if i give somebody a threat over there where i've. seen police officers get involved with kids to do those kinds of things because it's. it's a threat whether it's on facebook were in person so do you think that social media is going to change to be a little bit safer or is it just going to get where i think it needs to change and i think it takes everybody to get more with that to understand it they actually do
8:22 pm
social media strategy for a job yes so your life depends on social media a little bit i do other things as well but it's one of yeah we used it every day in your personal life i do one reason i think that i'm decent at social media strategy is because i am a little bit sick of it so it has to be really good right like i mean it's just seems to be so omnipresent now that i think there's something bigger and greater and better is going to come about. yet the second coming of jesus is going to come through social media and that's that word has twitter that's need to be part of jesus's twitter i'm sure he has was right right right exactly so do you think the social media craze is coming to an end why don't you tweet about it and see if anyone cares. all right let's go now to a story that we've been covering for quite a while now one of our regular guests alex jones has actually been covering for several years i'm talking about the builder bird conference the meeting of bankers
8:23 pm
and billionaires kept secret literally secret for years and then as time went on sort of just under the radar now it's becoming a little more well known we actually have major publications as you see here like political the guardian huffington post actually covering the build of our conference acknowledging that it exists well we also sent someone there we had someone on the ground outside of the hotel where this was going on r.t. correspondent abbie martin she was in chantilly virginia for the last few days and took a look into the arrivals. well actually someone talked to some during themselves yesterday arrive there have been people arriving all day there are multiple politician online already touching them and they actually come into the conference severe thunderstorms right now smoke a little bit of pens out here kind of pushed some of the protesters back but our team is out here on the ground like we are at all these places the mainstream media is nowhere to be found though however but we are still here reporting there are
8:24 pm
hundreds of people here earlier a couple of them of the first right now but there's expected to be hundreds if not thousands to borrow as it becomes more sunny in the weather turns better so there's no sign of any sort of mainstream media outlets there so why do you think that is going on. well you know when there's corporate media moguls who are actually involved in the conference and there are a supposedly sworn to secrecy we have a report of quote from rockefeller himself which is on the steering committee of the builder group saying that these media moguls they hand select every year to come to the conference they don't want them to be they want to be a stretch unary with this information and you know the corporate c.e.o.'s of these new appropriations are intricately involved with all of us being planned and with the people who are clicking together so that's why people are here protesting about one hundred forty of the world's most elite royalty politicians banking and defense
8:25 pm
all together in chantilly virginia right now in the westfield maryon you find me you do not see the corporate press here covering it why is that i mean you have to ask yourself why is that you know i mean break down for us a little bit of what you know what you can tell us about build a bridge i know it's not in chantilly every year it sort of switches locations you know just kind of give us the nuts and bolts how long this has been going on and sort of the evolution that it's taken on over the years in terms of coming out of the shadows. sir started in one nine hundred fifty four at hotel bird built a bird in the netherlands and ever since then annually every year hundred forty of the world. and all these industries have been meeting in different locations around the world and that's why it's so hard to follow them it's very secret very under wraps behind closed doors and just recently i mean as you said in your intro just recently this year we the corporate media that was at least pointed in the headlines saying that there's this is this i mean before you don't even hear
8:26 pm
a peep about it even existing we hear nato going on g eight all these world summits of all these leaders at the build of our group is completely under the wraps and so that's why people have been following them every year citizen journalism people like jim parker alex jones others that israel has been following these people and chasing them down all around the world trying to find out what really goes on in these meetings and why is it so secret and why is it that there are protesters out there abbi i mean i know there were a bunch out there yesterday we spoke to earlier you said there's even been an arrest why don't people care that the secret meeting goes on. i think people care because the whole thing that's being planned that affects the rest of the world i mean every year that this happens there's policy that happens after that people speculate that this was the plan in the bill the bird meeting i mean we saw in two thousand it when the builder meeting was here a chance for the last time obama started his press for a way in a different plane met with hillary at an undisclosed meeting all weekend in
8:27 pm
virginia i mean and then you saw her in a high level cabinet position in his government also speculated john edwards was picked to be the v.p. running mate in two thousand for it bill the birds earth american union the euro all these different elements of policy people have speculated have come out of the bill burton even hundred thirty the world's most powerful people don't just get together to just talk about force and whatever else and american idol i mean they're getting here to gather to talk about policy it's going to affect the world and also protesters are you're mainly protesting what they calls a violation of federal law it's something called the logan act where foreign diplomats are not supposed to get together with politicians to comb through this well that was our chief correspondent abbie martin braving the weather there for us in chantilly virginia now for us this evening and that's going to do it but be sure to tune in next week we'll continue our in-depth coverage first up these days you know wisconsin is known for more than just cheese and the green bay packers a recall election of historic proportions is just days away pitting union workers
8:28 pm
against governor scott walker and his corporate backers for only the third time in u.s. history voters will head to the polls to vote on whether a sitting governor can keep his job massive protests are expected and i will actually be heading down to wisconsin to find out what's going on there and what the bigger picture is here behind this vote now we've been reporting all week also on the secretive builder conference our own obvious martin has been reporting outside the gates of the marriott hotel speaking with protesters and trying to get video of any notable faces entering or exiting the hotel next week we will continue our coverage and see what else. can uncover about this all elusive group and last but not least montreal protests have marched past their hundredth day and are still going strong it all started with students protesting to wish in hikes but this has quickly become much more than that it's become a movement a so-called maple spring where the public is rising up against the government to
8:29 pm
canada south america students are being burdened with more school debt than ever before some are speaking out against it others are begrudgingly accepting it as a fact of life and the canadian government seems to be hoping that students will do the same next week we'll bring you the very latest from montreal canada and those are just a few of the stories that we'll be covering next week along with much more news and of course in-depth interviews so keep it tuned right here to our teeth thanks for watching have a great night. r t is the state run english speaking russian channel it's kind of like al-jazeera. russia today has an extremely confrontational stance when it comes to us.
