long-term arbonne in washington d.c. and here's what's coming up tonight the big picture. this weekend's announcement the spain would become the fourth eurozone nation to have to take a bailout cinese shock waves across the continent and the world but not in washington republicans are still pushing austerity down the throats of americans why republicans hell bent on seeing austerity will wreck the american economy also there are lawsuits flying around in florida over governor rick scott's illegal voter purge of thousands of democratic voters and while the lawsuits play out in
11:01 pm
court what can floridians do now to protect their right to vote and trayvon martin's death exposed a huge flaw in and the danger of the stand your ground shoot first laws across america he's not the only one to die at the hands of these corporate back laws so how have stand your ground laws been used to murder other are other cases around the country. you need to know this this weekend's announcement that spain will become the fourth euro zone nation to have its banks toure's to go bailout is sending shock waves across the con spain's economy is the fourth largest in the eurozone and a bank bailout there could cost as much as one hundred billion euros course it's one hundred billion euros to spanish banks not necessarily the spanish people whose lives are being destroyed by austerity spanish austerity agenda has increased unemployment to over twenty four percent. the highest in the eurozone and now put
11:02 pm
a bailout on the table when just ten days ago spain's prime minister said his country wouldn't need a bailout immediately after the spanish bailout announcement greece's anti austerity sarees a party leader slammed current euro economic policies saying developments in spain confirm the position that we have maintained from the start namely that the crisis is a pan european problem and that the way it has been dealt with until now has been completely ineffective and socially disastrous like spain greece has already taken a bailout for their banks and austerity for their people which is forced unemployment through the roof increase suicide rates and make greece's debt to g.d.p. ratio even worse not only that the use insistence on austerity may collapse the european union altogether as a spanish government insider told the guardian newspaper if spain falls the euro falls it's not enough money at the i.m.f. and the european rescue funds to bail out the spanish state after spain the next
11:03 pm
domino could be italy the euro zone's third largest economy italy's prime minister a technocrat name mario monti is openly acknowledging that his country could be the next to fall and the new york times is reporting quote the main fear is that italy cannot grow its way out of a recession fast enough to pay a mountainous national debt other concerns include the fact that italy will have to shoulder a large portion of the spanish bailout bill even as a grapples with its own sharp economic downturn because italy does not have enough economic growth to generate the money itself the government will probably have to borrow it high interest rates adding to an already have a debt load so as crippling austerity pushes greece to the brink and leaves spain in need of a bailout which could threaten the entire euro zone british voters are now worried that their country could be next conservative prime minister david cameron brought austerity to the u.s. in two thousand and ten and since seen virtually no economic growth and a new poll shows a seventy three percent of british voters think their country. he is moving in the
11:04 pm
wrong direction that poll which was commissioned by the international trade union confederation also surveyed voters across other g. twenty nations basically the twenty most developed economies in the world including the entire european union those voters also said their respective nations were in trouble with fifty six percent of respondents saying their nation is was also headed in the wrong direction also roughly two thirds of those polled in the g twenty said that banks financial institutions and corporations had too much influence on their government's economic decisions and then there's the u.n. which weighed in on the austerity agenda with a new report warning that europe is in a vicious cycle of high unemployment debt and austerity report urges governments to move away from austerity and instead promote growth and job creation but at the united states mitt romney the republican party are doubling down on austerity when romney's top economic advisers glenn hubbard just published an op ed in a german business magazine slamming president obama's economic policies and pushing
11:05 pm
for austerity here in the united states as hubbard writes the advice of the u.s. government regarding solutions to the crisis is misleading mitt romney obama's republican opponent understands this very well advise is a gradual fiscal consolidation for the us structural reform to stimulate growth. fiscal consolidation is economic speak for spending cuts which means more austerity so why is it that today's republican party has blinders on when it comes to what's happening in europe and here in the united states they're pushing for the same sort of austerity that's rypien entire cotton apart just across the atlantic joining me now is mark weisbrot economist and co-director of the center for economic and policy research and max fraud wall economist instructor at the new school university and senior analyst at green k. capital welcome to both of you thank you for joining us tonight thanks great to be here thank you thank you for thanks mark what's your take on the spanish bailout to what extent is this just spain vs beanes banks well obviously they are giving money
11:06 pm
through the banks and the spanish people will pay for that because it's going through the government it becomes part of their debt but the bigger problem really is the recession itself they've got you know twenty five percent unemployment or about fifty percent youth unemployment and the economy's getting worse and they're cutting the the budget they're tightening the budget and that's rinky the economy further they just cut while i was just there actually a week ago and the the government just passed a seven billion euro cut in their health care spending which would be like cutting a quarter of medicaid here in the united states so these are terrible things that they're doing and it's true they've resolved some of the immediate crisis in spain a little bit of it by giving this capital to the banks but the overall problem in europe is that they're pushing the economies in the wrong direction and they're shrinking them and the other thing i think that most people realize and
11:07 pm
probably most important is it isn't just the financial markets that are the problem here that are pushing up the interest rate on spanish debt or italian debt is that the european central bank which could easily push it back down can easily overpower the flow. anshul markets did so in november did so in august he's done it several times in the last year simply refuses to do this allows europe to be pushed to the brink of crisis over and over again because they want to use this to pressure these governments to cut their budgets to cut health care to raise the retirement age to do all the things that people wouldn't vote for that's the political basis of what you're seeing right no raising max what would happen if instead of the spanish banks that bailed out the spanish people. well you have a very different situation and we could ask that same question about the united states going back to two thousand and nine and two thousand and ten when the creditors are in charge they will always believe that the most important thing for
11:08 pm
the economy is for them to get paid back the problem is if there's limited money in the economy as contract thing and you have a really serious shortage of aggregate demand or the ability of the general public to be able to afford to buy things if you make sure the creditors get paid you will do so at the cost of macro economic stability of jobs and of growth we see that in the state level in the united states we saw it in ireland we see it in portugal we see it in greece we see it in spain and we see it proposed for france and italy kind of next in the queue for this medicine which turns out many cases to be more dangerous than the underlying disease mark isn't it is this is this being driven by economics or ideology a lot of it is ideologies specially the european central bank they want to destroy as much as they can the european welfare state while they're against it it's just like the republicans in the house here the big difference is in europe they have a lot more to destroy you know we don't have a lot of the things most of the things that the europeans have
11:09 pm
a lot of the social protections and so they have a bigger job ahead. also our government hasn't been as bad i mean you know we could be in deeper recession as your you know real recession right now like you are if the federal reserve for example was is right wing is the european central bank and hadn't done as much as bernanke has actually done he didn't do enough but they did create over two trillion dollars and they use that to help stimulate the economy in europe it's even more important the role of the central bank because they can actually stop this crisis the immediate crisis where you are just talking about in spain or in italy by simply keeping the interest. it's lower on these bonds they don't really have a public debt problem you know greece is another story because they've already destroyed the economy over the next few years but italy and spain don't really have a public debt problem when they have as
11:10 pm
a problem then their interest rates on their debt are being pushed up by the financial markets and the central bank won't push them back down max if it's obvious who the losers are and in this whole austerity agenda both in europe and in the united states the people who are the winners put anybody who wants to get paid back on money that they lent beyond the ability or willingness of the borrower to pay so when you use the bailouts to shore up the banks often because they got a little bit ahead of themselves with property market bubbles one of the lessons of this is almost all of the bailout cases whether that be ireland greece spain portugal or for that matter california in the united states are places that had huge housing and property and development bubbles the overhangs burst the banks were insolvent we saw the banks get bailed out to get shored up without the economy being shored up what you're doing is you're taking the wealth the society and making sure that it's first and in many cases it is exhausted paying back creditors
11:11 pm
and it's not going to all kinds of things hiring people providing social services providing social welfare etc so the people who are receiving the money the creditors are beneficiaries in the short run though they too are hurt by economic weakness and the people who would normally be benefited the middle class the lower income folks who would need the social safety net the social function are disproportionately heard here by a lack of social programs by a lack of jobs i think first and foremost the victims here are youth we have a fifty plus percent youth unemployment in spain and i think we're going to see the political fallout of that around the world here too because that's politically as well as economically unsustainable and mark in the last minute here that we have what do you see is the end game for all those at least in europe. well i think that what happens is the european authorities and especially the european central bank they keep pushing it to the brink they've done this several times now over the last two years and then they intervene to avoid
11:12 pm
a meltdown so i think they're just going to keep doing this for a while as long as they can as they're chipping away at the so yeah well first and there is one or two possible solutions they push these economies further into recession in the euro falls apart or they slowly change their policies away from the austerity. and away from trying to use the financial crisis to force these unpopular poot political changes and then things will get better remarkable max mark thank you both for being with us tonight i think thank you much appreciate it you know why republicans are pushing austerity the united states they want to crash the economy to make president obama look bad and if they succeed and take the white house and senate and in my being republicans will do a complete one eighty next year did borrow and spend lots of government money like reagan and bush did that's their plan and it's time to start calling them out on. coming up florida governor rick scott is suing the department of homeland security as part of his ongoing war on voting the d.o.j.
11:13 pm
is suing them right back lost in all the legal paperwork of the people of florida how do they fight back against governor scott protect their right to vote. wealthy british silence on. time. markets why not come to. find out what's really happening to the global economy with mike stronger for a no holds barred look at the global financial headlines tune in to kaiser report.
11:15 pm
three braun video for your media project free media. dot com. it's crude news get your lawsuits ready to florida on monday it is filing a lawsuit against the department of homeland security to gain access to a federal database of undocumented immigrants so the staking continue its illegal purge of democratic voters here was governor rick scott making his case on fox so-called news on monday. i have a job to do to defend the rights of legitimate voters says the first state we've been asking for the department of homeland security's database safe for months and they haven't given to us so this afternoon we'll be filing a lawsuit to the florida citrus state's office will be filing
11:16 pm
a lawsuit against the department of homeland security to give us that database we want to have the department of homeland security responded to governor's god saying that their database is incomplete and unreliable to use to purge voters and the department of justice said there are there are now suing the state of florida for violating the voter registration act and the voting rights act by continuing their voting purge after the d.o.j. demanded the state stop last week but it gets worse for governor scott several county election supervisors in florida many of them republicans have come out against governor scott's lawsuit arguing that it's just an effort by the governor and the secretary of state to improve their image and every single local county election supervisor has refused to comply at a local level with governors. perch a new poll shows a majority of voters in florida oppose governor scott's purge and his own approval rating has dropped to thirty one percent but governor scott knows what the rest of
11:17 pm
the republican party knows and that's the polls don't matter votes matter and if enough democratic voters are kicked off the rolls then mitt romney will win in november and governor scott will be reelected a few years after so while losses we've their way through the criminal justice system how do floridians who are facing a voting crisis now fight back against this effort to stop democrats from voting in november arlen gilchrist the second joins me tonight he is the national campaign director with move on or girl and welcome back thank you for having me great great to have you move on to has described what's happening in florida as jim crow two point zero what do you mean by that but that's exactly what's happening in florida people's rights are being threatened the governor of florida rick scott is literally trying to take away the voting rights of thousands of voters and why jim crow two point zero is because more than half of those voters that have been targeted fifty eight percent of them are latino and fourteen percent of them are african-american how does that compare with the overall population of florida so
11:18 pm
well suffice it to say that more than half of the population of florida is not latino and the percentage of voters that are african-american is only thirteen percent not fourteen percent right so they're they're disproportionately going after my absolute their absolute targeting them and that's what we're calling the jim crow to point you know forty nine years ago another start there in conservative governor stood in the way of the rights of americans of the rights of asking magics or lester maddox george wallace in alabama they stood in the way of americans being able to exercise their rights and so again now governor rick scott is version two point zero of this kind of discrimination of this kind of racist tactics that say where people's rights really is quite remarkable you all move on dot org has have submitted one hundred sixty five thousand signatures to petition attorney general holder. to immediately block this voter purge which it looks like he has done. we now have dueling lawsuits between florida and the federal government. while
11:19 pm
those are getting worked out and and move on is putting pressure on the governor what should democratic voters in florida be doing will they regret it voters in florida and then and you know voters across the country should be very concerned that voting rights are under attack in florida and every other part of the country so what we need to do is stay involved to get informed and right now we're speaking up and actually calling out you know mitt romney who is the vanguard of the republican party right now i mean he's their presumptive nominee and he needs to step up and take leadership and so we're calling on him publicly to condemn the races voter purge in florida you know we flew a banner all mitt romney event just morning in orlando florida where he was competing campaigning about the races voter for you know the banner said but seen over perch equals racism for romney because we think he should answer for that and it was there any response from his campaign mitt romney was silent and that's why we're calling on him to publicly step up you know this voter purge program could potentially benefit mitt romney in this election and it's important that he steps
11:20 pm
up and takes leadership and rejects the voter purge that it's unfortunately affecting what's you know an african-american voters and isn't this in a very real way just a repeat of what happened i mean we don't need to go back fifty years to to maddox and wallace i mean this happened in two thousand with numbers as low as seven thousand and eighty thousand african-americans being knocked off the voting rolls by katherine harris and jeb bush just before the election so that george could win by five hundred votes absolutely and you know we don't want to see it's repeated and that's why so many move on members across the country again one hundred sixty five thousand people almost one move a member for every vote that was challenge to step up and they said yes you know we need to we need this to stop today and we called on the attorney general to do so and we're very happy the department of justice took action are we seeing other states and other. republican governors doing what rick scott is doing or talking about what rick scott is doing or or moving in ways that may not look the same but have functionally the same effect unfortunately in the north south east and west of
11:21 pm
this country you know there are laws that have been put in place to suppress votes and so wherever those laws are being put in the on the books are already on the books you know move on members are going to be fighting against them and we're going to be campaigning we're going to be stepping up and we're going to be calling on the elected leaders to condemn those laws are going to mitt romney to condemn these voter suppression tactics and we're going to call in the department of justice to make sure that they protect the voting rights of every voter in america . given how much super pac money is coming in how they're the big corporations and billionaires are going to dominate this election what's the role of movement politics the movement we can beat the money this is they have money we have people we have passion we have power and so that to the we're going to mobilize people at a level that you've never seen before much more so than they can mobilize their dollars and we know that that passion that matters you know we are right in this issue you know protecting rights is the right thing to do and that's what we're fighting for and we're going to be able to beat the money this november from your
11:22 pm
lips to god's ears. thank you so much thank you very much you're going to see. now moving on to more controversy surrounding the so-called stand your ground laws according to a new study from texas a and m. university the at the alec and wal-mart back to a stand your ground should first laws around the country do not deter crime and proponents say they do but in fact cause more of it the study's authors argued that stand your ground should first laws increase the chances of murder or manslaughter quote by lowering the expected costs associated with using legal lethal force and quote the release of the texas a and m. study comes just days after the u.s. commission on civil rights announced it would be taking a closer look at the stand your ground should first laws after numerous studies have shown there's a racial bias inherent in them for example an f.b.i. study found that quoting the f.b.i. here thirty four percent of cases involving a white shooter killing a black person were deemed as justifiable homicide meanwhile in similar situations
11:23 pm
when the shooter was black in the victim was white the homicide was ruled justifiable only three point three percent of the time of course the commission's investigation is too little too late for the family of trayvon martin most notable victim of the violence promoted by florida's stand your ground law in florida and the twenty four other states was some type of stand your ground you first law there have been dozens of other murders committed that have gone unreported by the mainstream media joining me now to talk more about america's stand your ground shoot first laws and the people who have died because of them it's wave on lead reporter with pro publica so i want to welcome subrange it and starting me i'm mispronouncing your name how far does florida's stand your ground law reach. well florida's stand your ground law basically removes a person's duty to retreat in public places where he has a right to be and authorizes that person to use deadly force against another person . in cases where he believes that there was
11:24 pm
a he had reason to believe that he was in fear of death or harm to himself so essentially what it does it does is it broadens the castle doctrine in which a person had every right to use deadly force against a person who enters his home and extends those to public places serve on how long how many times has this come up in court decisions around the country. well the most recent study conducted by the tampa bay times has identified at least two hundred cases two thousand and five when the law was passed in florida in which the law was invoked so at least two hundred instances and and counting one of it's extraordinary and each one involves somebody dying you know a lot of people families in pain tell you stories of joe horn and byron thomas. sure in some of the cases that we highlighted in our in our piece joe horn was
11:25 pm
a man in harris county texas he observed two men burglarizing his neighbor's home he concerned he called out nine one one as he had every right to do and told the operator about what was happening he saw the two men leaving the home and he was telling the operator you better come quick i see them leaving the operator essentially told him to stay inside he wanted to pull out his shotgun he expressed his desire to to use force against these two men and against the operator's cautionary words he actually ended up shooting these two men and a grand jury declined to indict him of any criminal charges in texas. i believe the other case you asked me about was about morrison. but you're right that was a case in wisconsin in which in which a young man and i did out actually going to a porch in which he was actually at
11:26 pm
a neighboring underage drinking party he was hiding out on this porch the homeowner of that home came out observed him on the deck a little bit startled and he actually ended up shooting him in the chest killing him in that particular case the wisconsin response and county district attorney failed to bring any criminal charges against the homeowner to to what extent is there legitimate pushback to these laws. you know beyond. to get the conversation that we're having this kind of you know the is there any any serious pushback happening at a legislative level. i think it's a little still it's still a little too early to observe any sort of pushback on that level there is pushback of course in community areas for instance today in florida they held a task force meeting inviting the public to come in and comment on their views and their perspectives about the stand your ground law so at this point it's still very
11:27 pm
much a entertaining public views and viewpoints about the law but we have to wait and see until. they actually legislatures come back to assess whether there needs to be very visions of such laws around the country and the suv only thanks so much for being with us. thank you shoot first laws have become a license in america largely for white people to kill black people but not the other way around trying to strike these laws on the books and prevent any more unnecessary violence. after the break with the bush tax cuts set to expire on december thirty first republicans and democrats have drawn up their game plans could the debate over the bush tax cuts at the end of the years signal an ideological shift in the republican party.
