10:30 pm
well today there are some new developments in the case of wiki leaks founder julian
10:31 pm
assange the two weeks ago we told you that his appeal against extradition to sweden was turned down by the british supreme court and at the heart of his case is whether a prosecutor is a judicial off already capable of issuing a european arrest warrant and the british supreme court ruled that it is one but the body extraordinarily allowed a songes lawyers to appeal the decision on the grounds it was based on points not argue so today the court ruled that it would not reopen the case saying that they feel was quote without merit and said the following of defense attorney diana rose's appeal had miss rose been minded to challenge the ability of the vienna convention on the law of treaties or the ability of state practice on interpreter treaties she had the opportunity to do so she made no such challenge so in other words there is an argument you made songes lawyer indicated that she would make the proper argument in the court's eyes so songe now is the choice of obeying the decision or appealing to the european court of human rights in strasburg and was signage has not been charged with any crime in sweden and supporters are concerned
10:32 pm
the extradition to sweden would lead to extradition to the united states where as we know a grand jury is reportedly deciding whether or not to charge a sign over wiki leaks unauthorized disclosures of classified information don't really keep you guys updated with any new information that comes up but it's a case that you have to watch because if a sign is brought to the u.s. this could have a chilling effect on the freedom of the press. all right a time for show and tell on tonight's program the earlier this week we spoke about the possibility of an internet bill of rights with julian sanchez now he suggested that we shouldn't need new regulations because our rights should already be covered in the original bill of rights that's in the constitution so i want to know what you think if america needs a bill of rights for the web producer for treason assented to find out what you had to say i'm on the streets of d.c. to tell people the nation's capital what our viewers had to say on twitter facebook and you tube and see which comments we should keep orderly.
10:33 pm
do you think we need an internet bill of rights creedence wrote in to say he thinks the internet bill of rights is just another idea of how to control people up on line he does not think the internet needs one what do you think i think you make some very good points there and it's not something we only i don't know how you just say you know this bill or i should be just for americans but it's something that the whole world takes part in do you feel protected online do i feel ok i feel pretty secure for the most part if you have the right security it's not an issue i've never run into an issue online at all markus wrote in to say it's a ludicrous assertion to think that we need to legislate something that is the appear to me a free speech she also believes that trying to bring bills into legislation no matter how well in their intentions are only create eventually gray areas for someone to exploit but you know i think about that i think i want the government protecting me online definitely don't think we need a bill of rights on the internet feeling a bill of rights and be going a little too far feel ok about being on like it's i don't feel unprotected quarter
10:34 pm
right in to say we need something to cover the net do you think we should really add to our constitution. i'm not sure if it's to the point where it needs to be constitutional yet i don't think we need to enter a bill of rights no i think we all enjoy our freedom of surfing the web but the general feeling is to leave the internet alone and the constitution as it stands and internet bill of rights would only create new legal complications and unwanted government intervention. now as always thank you for your responses and here's our next question for you earlier in the show we discussed carlos slim suggestion the retirement age be raised to seventy to reflect life expectancy rates thing is for many poor people life isn't getting any longer so let's get your take do you think the retirement age should be raised to seventy but if so you think on facebook twitter and you tube and who knows your response just might make it on air. now thanks to last year's indefinite detention provision the n.d.s.
10:35 pm
become an acronym synonymous with injustice but the annual defense spending bills more than just a vehicle for back door tyrannies the unfortunately before the indefinite detention provision most people probably don't even know what the n.d.a. was they know that congress has to approve funding for the pentagon or for our wars abroad but not necessarily the vehicle through which it happens so what the indefinite detention provision did was shine a light or shine a light on for many americans was that it's not just great forward finding it that gets put into this massive piece of legislation annually now we want to highlight some other shocking aspects for you that are being overlooked is the n.b.a. for fiscal year two thousand and thirteen works its way through congress unfortunately looks like the culture war managed to wait make its way it last month president obama threatened to veto the two thousand and thirteen bill as it is now because the house version explicitly bans same sex marriage on military installations and last week a same sex commitment ceremony at a louisiana base and house republicans up in arms calling upon it as evidence of
10:36 pm
the band's importance but that's not the only cultural fight here the house republicans are using the defense bill as a weapon in their war on women to the department of defense is the only federal agency out there whose insurance plans will cover abortions resulting from rape or incest and abortions are only provided when the life of the mother is in danger so if a service woman is the victim of rape that leads to the pregnancy the military wants no responsibility in that and sadly rape in the military is an increasingly common occurrence and one that often goes under reported a study just this year found nineteen thousand sexual assaults reported in fiscal year two thousand and ten alone and the pentagon estimates that only about thirteen point five percent of cases actually result in complaints to the actual number is most likely much much higher and there's a feeling that service women are being abandoned by the military brass and specially when it comes to remedying pregnancies that result from rape. but i've seen some cases. of situations where individuals have and these are
10:37 pm
women who tried to do the abortion themselves or went to other people who were not able to do it well and ended up with very sad outcomes. so those sentiments in mind democratic senator jeanne shaheen trying to amend the senate's version of the two thousand and thirteen and the a she reposed a provision that would force the government to pay for abortions when the pregnancy is a result of a woman in uniform being raped and many of the military saw this is a sensible way to approach the consequences of a massive systemic problem take a look at this. this is just not acceptable bans on abortion coverage exist for millions of women who receive their health care through government programs but these bans under the hyde amendment allow coverage of abortions if the pregnancy is the result of or result of rape or incest federal civilian employees medicaid recipients even federal prison inmates are guaranteed
10:38 pm
affordable access to abortion in cases of rape. are that was the wrong clip but this whole thing was a commonsense provision to change that ban it even had the support of senate republicans but surprise surprise house republicans are the ones causing problems last week the army times quoted the republican staffer quote familiar with defense issues who said that the amendment probably won't pass the final bill and he said the following historically social provisions that are not reflected in both bills heading into conference don't survive amendments like this have come up several times so it doesn't make you feel good that stuff like this doesn't survive the provisions to indefinitely detain american citizens do now senator shaheen it came to the defense of her amendment today and washed didn't mention g.o.p. opposition outright outrage at the reports was clear so here's the clip again. this is just not acceptable bans on abortion coverage exist for millions of women who
10:39 pm
receive their health care through government programs but these bans under the hyde amendment allow coverage of abortions if the pregnancy is the result of or result of rape or incest federal civilian employees medicaid recipients even federal prison inmates are guaranteed affordable access to abortion in cases of rape. so there it is again but you know what we have to repeat it because i'm with the senator this is absolutely outrageous it's bad enough the republicans are fighting tooth and nail to take away a woman's rights to choose all over the country but you would think that their love of heroic soldiers and the right would want to protect women instead of ignoring their abuse and then leaving them high and dry now on top of that the liberation of women is essential part of our afghan war p.r. campaign so how does that square away with the way that we actually treat the women who fight that war quite simply it doesn't this whole or here what the whole ordeal
10:40 pm
highlights the gross hypocrisy of our liberation of propaganda and discourages levin from joining the military but most importantly shows the republicans will stop at nothing when fighting their war against women even when it interferes with the actual wars themselves. also to come tonight a top defense contractor makes sure of the politicians that stay on their side by pulling the press line and yet very unsurprising that will explain in tonight's bull's-eye and on happy hour the people of maryland really see you up oh and the creators of h.b.o.'s game of thrones play have some explaining to do the details straight ahead.
10:41 pm
10:42 pm
hi guys it's time for tonight's tool time ward and i were giving it to a defense contractor that enjoys pulling the strings over on capitol hill and when it comes to the top defense contractors there are three names that you should know lockheed martin boeing and northrop grumman but today we're going to pay extra attention to that last company because it's just remarkable how much influence they have on lawmakers here in washington especially when it comes to winning the big money contracts for the biggest and most bad as weapons that our military can handle northrop grumman their response will for the long range strike bomber program a fifty five billion dollars project will replace our perfectly good b two planes that we currently employ one of their biggest claims to infamy is the f.
10:43 pm
thirty five think you guys remember that one that's the trillion dollar fighter jet that's been riddled with problems well despite their efforts to snag contract after contract from the pentagon northrop grumman obviously feels like that still isn't enough it looks like they want to be the top the number one military contractor see they gauge in a little bit of brazen pocket lining will put most other companies to shame the norther grumman lost a vice president to the public sector last year thomas mckenzie after ten years at northrop he became a staffer for the house armed services committee and he gave up his sweet five hundred and twenty nine thousand dollars salary to make just a little over one hundred thousand a year drafting bills so why would you have that job change green unless he's had a lifelong dream of working on the hill that is quite the pay cut for him but there's another crucial piece to this puzzle you see according to a frequent guest of our show or public reports leaf on ethics disclosure forms show the mackenzie got a sweet parting bonus for north of gromit a four hundred ninety eight thousand dollar windfall that's about as much as annual
10:44 pm
salary was when he worked for the company but wait because there's even more injuries in this corruption saga see the head of the house armed services committee as california congressman buck mckeon. this guy is a war hawk if you ever seen one not only does he defend wasteful military projects but he's been practically begging i mean begging everybody out there to stop sequestration cuts designed to save five hundred billion dollars for our country's budget check out a clip of this shameless tear jerker featuring an appeal from buck himself at the end. contracts of this nature. could radically valley would mean a loss of business will mean a loss of jobs nobody can defeat us from outside but if you don't so. we have to protect against them. now the olympics are in for another few weeks but i fear mongering wasteful spending where events save to save him again would take on two
10:45 pm
gold medals the summer and we can't campaign coffers well they are brimming with defense contractors gratitude as a result she according to the center for responsive politics northrop grumman has donated fifty thousand dollars to the congressman's campaign funds just this past year to see how it works nor the grumman scratches his back with campaign donations we can defend pretty much every single product that comes out of the north of gum and workshop no matter how shoddy and dangerous they are there is so much corruption going on here that it's difficult to actually keep track and it is if that wasn't grimy enough the company then sends one of its higher ups to mickey and staff to write legislation ensuring that our military does for a complex will keep on chewing up the dollars all over the benefits of north of governs bottom line it's on there's just one company guilty of all this it's much bigger than just north of buck mckeon it's all part of this revolving door syndrome that we talk about regularly people leave their lobbying firms to work for the government after they're done due to fully helping out their old bosses they go back to their cushy job on k. street it's a problem president obama vowed to add when he was
10:46 pm
a candidate dishing out promises like hotcakes but as the evidence shows things did not quite pan out like that and in the meantime north of companies taking full advantage of it so for being one of the highest flying corruption influences and for continuing to contribute to the slimy failure of american democracy we're giving northrop grumman tonight's tool time award. ok guys it is time for a happy hour of the evening and joining me tonight our t. web producer andrew blake and warren rojas roll calls heard on the hill columnist hello gentlemen willow. let's basically start with. a little something that one of my favorite t.v. shows that they out there are game of thrones i'm obsessed with a lot of things that h.b.o. does and i have to admit i haven't read the books in getting in there but so game
10:47 pm
of thrones involved a little bit of controversy and i'll let this clip explain it because i'm not doing a good job remember when joffrey forced to look at her dad's head on a stick we miss you ned stark well look closely and one of those heads is george w. bush now when they reveal this in the commentary the creators insisted that it was for budget purposes only and that it was not a political statement. you didn't hear that but now there are back to t.v. time so i mean what do you guys think now they have to they by the way they had to apologize about it today would be apologizing h.b.o. especially h.b.o. i thought the whole thing was at their edgy and that's a service that's a network that people actually pay for it i mean if you don't have the constraints because h.b.o. will will go anywhere if they could have apologized for taken. gary
10:48 pm
shandling off the air or something but no no they would like nothing nothing that is an apologist is people who have already been here and you know whatever. people don't like bush is that like we can't talk about it now that he's out of office only one time when i think they just do their political slaying writ large like game change where they just mccain and sarah palin through the mud you know they see for their big features and this time they're just saying oh well we just rented this like someone just has george bush proppants lying around that's kind of creepy to you know you never know what might be lying around in the prob cause if we have some funny stuff over by my desk and all this gets that we've done on the. completely i don't even know you completely understand because i actually kept a nixon mask in the trunk of my car for a good four maybe five years i just recently took it out and replaced it with some bunny ears and actually replace it but there are now bunny ears and in case i mean a situation that calls for
10:49 pm
a problem child and try to trick them with your friends you know that's the candy. anyway lame i'm with you lame if they had to actually issue. let's talk about that . well first of all this isn't necessarily something new but we know that you know political campaigns these days. they're getting grabby and they want all of your information so that then they can target you we've spoken about this in brief before we were to take a look. on this count in the holy grail for about the last ten to fifteen years for political parties they actually get into this game and say we're going to make all of this part of how we target you and so the things you put on facebook are now allowing folks in chicago for the obama campaign to basically said you a different email than me. that they creepily. find out your habits and patterns and things but this time we're talking out microsoft and yahoo because turns out they are actually selling political campaigns the ability
10:50 pm
to target voters with tailored ads using names zip codes and all kinds of other registration information you provide when you sign up for their free e-mail and other services do you remember a couple of months ago when the presidential debate was all on how much romney was making in the race and also web site we can touch type in your annual salary and i tell you how long it takes me to make that a and i kind of want to be most of us it was like a minute yeah i kind of want to import like my facebook profile and maybe they can find a way to tell me how much my terrible terrible info is worth to these campaigns because i would really like to know what i'm because i don't think i'm worth that much frankly i don't value your club score for politicians how much i mean i'm going. to . i really don't think romney's campaign we need to find a registered member of the green party that's heavily in debt and try to search you know and it seems like you're doing you're probably not you're probably not one of their intended targets but there is you know this is what this is why it's so
10:51 pm
ridiculous to me that somebody like sheldon adelson wants to shovel out one hundred million dollars just so you can like convince a couple of voters in the swing states you know that the whole system to me is that is so frustrating because of that that's what they're trying to convince people these are even coming off as ads they're actually getting you know i don't see them getting into your computer but they're following what you do online the following your habits on social networks or following your purchasing history like everything about you there's like three or four different types of do. mining involved in this all to install as you go about your internet business in there and it's not like driving around and seeing billboards these are custom made ads for very demographics and it's really doing i hope it's not going to do a lot to the way we elect people in america it's just as creative a thank you for that very detailed rundown of it you are to know. more about is did you by any chance write a story for the website about that today mayhaps is no one going to applaud microsoft and yahoo for finally catching up to google and i'm going to do it very
10:52 pm
easy and learning all this information i was going to make money to have microsoft really needs to make money they're hurting who i mean actually got when i was going to write the story today we were looking at information and if you look at microsoft if you look at yahoo. they're not doing so hot now i mean and i mean yes they're obviously still making you know we too much money but yahoo is a little past their prime and i went home i mean what i wanted what are yahoo's profits like well i mean just when looking at the nasdaq yahoo peaked in june two thousand i think it was a little bit ago i know you did you. think but. they're not going to let you have on it's. ok side i'm going to cut you off but let's talk about ice t. he basically they have him it's an interesting thoughts today on president obama's original election and the role that rap music played to be like. what the races
10:53 pm
together put barack obama in the presidency you know if it wasn't for rap white people wouldn't of been so open to vote for somebody like barack obama but it was hip hop thirty years twenty years ago that got people willing to vote you know there's only ten percent black people in the united states white people voted for. the best thing is that you have. kathie lee and hoda sitting there be like tell us i see what way people think and do win there. i mean what do you what do you think did rap music elect obama i can't tell you i mean how many white people i've spoken to that get a lot of their political information from gangsta rap i mean that is a seminal vehicle to middle america to who they should be voting for so i think i mean educated on the gangsta rap of the talk a lot about the east coast versus west coast. and you probably pick out a lot of political those names and they're right i mean i remember biggie and tupac always drop and lyrical bombs about their state represent their congressional
10:54 pm
representatives and you know their favorite senators so i've nailed this one nailed it i still reference you know public enemy lyrics. however i mean i think it's not necessarily a great argument like i was going to take the approach of you know jazz didn't really do anything but i guess then again you know you couldn't really vote at the time and america so. yeah i don't know if i buy it first like i don't trust him this is. no no no you know you hello because he loves coco you know now is the only way to go it is going to do with like you know being in body count and now he's just like a crappy actor but not in order and i think we could see that rap didn't elect obama just the failure of bush for eight years probably had a bigger role but i think there's an argument to be made probably that music and
10:55 pm
hip hop music in particular in a certain way because we flew in the groups of people now alternative fuels maybe you know maybe help influence people in regards to race and open them up a little bit you know to become a little more accepting i mean i can tell you that i know a lot of you know i know a lot more about him all because of groups like rage against the machine and you know more today are you. saying about him are you really quick we got to wrap it up but i can is opening up the door for new domains and. some of them are going to be dot sucks l.o.l. and i just love that because the second that happens i'm going to purchase andrew blake dot sucks. all right all right i think you got me. a great somebody stole my name on just dot com and now really all they do i wonder who did. what he did that our guy got her out of thanks for joining me tonight that's it for tonight's show it thanks for joining in and make sure to my tomorrow lauren lyster is going to join us for our financial checkup and in the meantime
10:56 pm
