the. this is a temporary stopgap measure that lets us focus our resources wisely while giving a degree of relief and hope to talented driven patriotic young people topping the news tonight president obama is loosening his grip on deportation first pandering to the l.g.b. tea vote now this panic vote so this is a cheap political ploy or a way to reinvigorate the immigration debate in the us. plus it's arguably the civil rights issue of our time and now american politicians seem to be more accepting of the l g b t community even appoint a gay rights advocate as the ambassador to el salvador but should the u.s. be pushing their views on gay rights around the world will debate the issue ahead.
8:01 pm
it's friday june fifteenth eight pm in washington d.c. i'm adding martin you're watching our t.v. . finally hope for change on immigration obama gave a speech today on immigration policy stated that young undocumented immigrants will now be legalized in the united states the latest news is believed to affect eight hundred thousand undocumented immigrants living in america many of question obama's support for immigration reform considering how not much has been done since in two thousand and eight campaign rhetoric to talk more about whether or not this policy will change anything about this country or the political pandering actually means ron go chose community organizer joined us earlier today take a look. well i think in part defined his political pandering but at the same time i think it's a remarkable victory for all the young people who have been organizing so hard to make this happen you know if it wasn't for the pressure of grassroots groups that have an organization so many years this would not have happened so it's a victory for the community i'm happy that it's happening and so you're excited
8:02 pm
about it let's look really quickly ron about the specifications of who of who could apply they must be under thirty years old most of arrive in the u.s. before they turn sixteen must have lived in the u.s. for five years in a high school diploma or d. and thus have not been convicted of a felony offense is this just saying that young immigrants who can be put to work can be legalized. yeah this is a great step for these folks and i think that we have to understand that this only represents six percent of the eleven million people who are undocumented this country so this is definitely not the full solution but this is you know a step in the positive direction i think this is good for young students who will now have the chance to work legally in this country but at the same time we see that you know this only covers to go into the thirty so after that point you really say in the same hole that we were before so we're going to continue to push so that we have really legalization in this country for not just students but for all people in our community and there's millions of people that will not be affected by
8:03 pm
this new change in policy so we have a lot of work to do why do you think that the that it took him you know four years to do this. you know i think it's no coincidence that in the last couple of weeks young people dreamers activists they have been occupying democratic party centers author wrote this country to pressure him to highlight the fact that this is not being done by a republican administration this is being done by the democratic party by president obama was already deported more than one point two million people so they know that the latino community is very discontent with the administration so they need to do something to rescue some votes now we're saying this is not enough this is only for six percent of our population we need to continue to have more and you know just like president obama had at the you know took the leadership and say having an executive order to put an end to the deportation of the dreamers he can just as easily do this for the rest of the community we desperately need to change because we have millions of workers in this country who have no protection right now so this is great for the students but what about their parents and the rest of the
8:04 pm
family members. i want to play you a sound bite from obama's speech today ron. this is a temporary stop gap measure that lets us focus our resources wisely while giving a degree of relief and hope to talented driven patriotic young people it is what it is the right thing to do. so ron there he is you know kind of saying it's great and you know the right thing to do but ron you just said yourself his deported more immigrants than any of her president and he also boasted kind of about that saying you know we we have less deportations at the border and less illegal immigrant crossing into this country do you think that that kind of a double speak coming from them. it's definitely a double speak you can say it's the right thing to do and at the same in the same sentence say it's temporary if this is the right thing to do than it's to be permanent and that needs apply not only to six percent of our population the students but it also has to apply the rest of the community and it's very easy for
8:05 pm
him to say that it's a broken immigration system and he keeps putting it on the republican than it keeps putting on the congress but he does have the power of the executive order and this morning he used it and he need to use it again so that the rest of the people the eleven million people can also finally live legally in this country and not have to fear constant deportation constant you know separation of families and the rest so we're going to continue to support groups all over the country and they have groups like sort of groups like ideas they're going to continue to fight because this fight is not over this is only the beginning it is a very divided issue the iran in the government what chance do you think that is to get you know to get full legalization for all immigrants living here oh it's definitely a political issue you know if president obama is really fully believes that he wants to do what's the right thing then it's very obvious not only economically speaking we know that migrants and immigrants in this in this country contribute
8:06 pm
billions of dollars that they never get back in their taxes but we at the same time politically you have a lot of anti immigrant reactionary you know phobia that really is putting pressure on him not to have an immigration reform so if he's in to do the right thing the correct thing to do it's a legalize everybody in this country and we're going to continue to push for that regardless of who wins elections in november regardless if it's democrats republicans our people live in fear they are terrorized daily so we need more changes so it was a great step in the right direction but we need much more what do you say to people who say this was the wrong thing to do and we shouldn't have undocumented immigrants here stealing jobs or or whatever else the talking points are immigration here. oh i think i have yet to hear some of that truly makes sense most of the arguments are very racist in nature they say no they call this anchor babies they call these all these terrible terms but they don't really go to the bottom or
8:07 pm
the root of the issue and that is the reason why so many millions of people come to this country and that's because of the economic policies that are imposed upon our countries by washington d.c. you know if our country if we can enjoy our own resources we would have to come to this country so we're here we're contributing we're adding to the economy everyone knows that what's happening in georgia and alabama look at their economy without labor without migrants and immigrants and they were the economy's going to suffer tremendously so it's the right thing to do economically speaking but just you know in terms of mortality what kind of country throws out millions of people who are contributing to the country who are not criminals and we're not we're also i want to say we're not going to accept the fact that they're blaming the parents saying well these kids didn't do anything wrong but they're parents that that's absolutely false our parents come in for a better life they risk their lives to come here and they contribute to this country they're not here to steal anything or to damage or to harm anyone they're here for a better life and that at the same size making this country better and stronger ron
8:08 pm
i want to play you a clip from a previous interview that you had on our team talking about this issue. we're pushing the message we're saying that to the democratic party or to any of the politicians we're saying those who promise our community legalization have not kept their promises of some type of immigration reform where saying now we're saying well no legalization no re-election don't think about coming to our communities asking for our vote if you didn't keep your promises of legalizing our communities so these so there you are saying you know you're not going to get our vote unless you do this and here he comes out today and says a legalization for these communities so ron does obama have your vote now. not yet and i will say we don't have legalization today this only provides a temporary relief that means we'll get deported but it's not a legalization because you still can't get driver's licenses we still won't be able to vote and there's a lot of rights that we still want to have so i think if president obama and the democratic party or any party or politician wants
8:09 pm
a vote of the community they're going to have to come through on these promises and so far there have been and kept you know this is more like a bullet wound that is still bleeding today we got a band-aid but that's simply not enough so who will have your vote at this time or are you just not going to vote does anyone match what you want to see happen. i think you know it's the responsible responsibility of those who can vote to go out and vote but only vote for politicians or for parties that represent their interests and if there is not no one that represents our interest then we have no we have nothing to do with we should have nothing to do with these parties so i'm going to vote but i obviously am not going to vote for a republican and if there's no there's no vote there's no promise kept by the obama administration then i cannot myself or to anyone else and have any kind of dignity by going a vote for the democratic party so ron you said yourself you know it is in part political pandering but also it is a giant step for recognizing immigration and part legalizing them i know not in
8:10 pm
full but i mean do you really think this is going to do anything you said yourself that it really doesn't do that much and here it took obama three years to even get here do you i mean what do you think's going to happen in this two party system that we have to really go forward with the issue. there were i don't want to be little the issue you know a lot of people work very hard to make this happen and it is it is a very sizable victory for the people who have been pushing for this however you know within the framework within the big picture here obviously we still leaves more than ninety four percent of our community that has no pathway to legalization and even with cities change they still don't have a pathway so i think it's a political hot potato that the president is tossing back and forth with the congress but if you really believe that it's a broken immigration system if you really believe that he wants to do the right thing then he can use the same power of the executive order to put a complete halt or a moratorium on all the ports asians until this is fixed in congress that would be
8:11 pm
the right thing to do what's broken about it what's broken about it is that there are right now is no real way for people to become legalized you have millions of people who are already here who obviously it's not it's not feasible for them to go back to any other country to wait in line for ten or twelve years we separated from their families to maybe be able to become legal in this country that's broken and when you have millions of people in this country who work hard who contribute to the economy you know if they're tossed out what is that going to the american economy was in a pick the fruits and food that we eat every day who is in to do the jobs that most americans quite honestly will absolutely never do that is was broken about the system that it's depended upon our people to work here but at the same time trying to deport millions of our people so that's why we have to continue to struggle and pressure any administration so that we become legalized completely not a partial legalization not a second class citizenship type legalization but a for legalization like everybody else in this country thanks for coming on ron i
8:12 pm
appreciate your time i was around coaches' community organizer the obama administration took a daring gay rights initiative in december of last year to eight countries that support gay rights abroad and combat the ones that don't. being gay is not a western invention it is a human reality this morning back in washington president obama put into place the first us government strategy dedicated to combat ing human rights abuses against l g t persons abroad last month obama made international waves i personally endorsing same sex marriage during the last decade americans become more supportive of gay rights but the country still heavily divided about the issue for an amazing gallup poll only fifty four percent of americans consider game lesbians morally acceptable so with such a divided opinion about gay rights still here at home should the u.s. government have the right to coerce world policy with sanctions or aid to countries
8:13 pm
that do or don't support gay rights to discuss this further i was joined earlier by jimi le salvi a co-founder and executive director of go proud and thomas peters cultural director for the national organization on marriage first thomas peter schiff peter shared his views on same sex marriage take a listen well i mean as an explanation for marriage we strongly stand by the rights of gay and lesbian people around the world to have their core civil liberties understood and respected where we draw the line is the issue of marriage we believe marriage is the issue is a union of one man and one woman and so as far as you know things are nationally we support human rights of all people but the question i think is really where you draw human rights where you draw that line well that's a good point thomas you know the greatest threat to gay people around the world is the spread of radical islam and brutal dictators and in some places gay people are actually killed simply for being gay and i believe that freedom is freedom for everyone and it shouldn't in our borders and freedom is freedom thomas and you have
8:14 pm
arbitrarily drawn the line but the fact of the matter is it is our moral obligation as americans to spread freedom throughout the world and. and one point to make is that this isn't the first time in two thousand and six george bush's ambassador in latvia stood up in favor of allowing the gay pride march and said it was it was important litmus test of their democracy and you know we're we're fortunate in this country to have the first amendment in our constitutional rights and we should we should help to spread freedom around the world would you also support a president like romney who maybe could initiate going across the world and implementing an anti gay strategy i mean if you're saying that it's up you know. that it's the u.s. as a whole to really do this in the world i don't think governor romney is anti-gay advocate i mean that hypothetically no i mean i just i don't think that that's who
8:15 pm
we are as americans and and it's our obligation to spread freedom and that's what we do in our state department but half of the country still doesn't doesn't agree on the policy so is it really the u.s. role to do this abroad. well the truth is in this country more more gay people are coming out living their lives openly and honestly in that's moving our countries public opinion and it's happening throughout the world to yes we should share we should share our values with the world i mean my view is that it's not anti gay to be pro-marriage i think in many when you talk about the state department's actions you talk about the americas attitude towards the world it would be more respecting of these cultures who have largely if not uniformly decide that marriage is unified and wife to respect those cultural values and so when you look at the state department's priority list i don't see really how redefining marriage is on that list i think there's a world of human rights issues too to be passionate about that also respect the
8:16 pm
cultural values and certainly like and in countries like poland there's a strong tradition of marriage being between a union of husband a wife so i think that's sort of where the state department you know promoting america's interests abroad are and as far as freedom i think it's america respecting the freedom of these countries to self determine what marriage is i don't really see where america has an interest in countervailing those values. well never homicide i don't think that it's in our interests or any other country's interest to abridge freedom freedom is freedom and drawing lines of where that freedom should end is is not what is the role of government or the role of our country at all and so i would disagree with you on where you where you define freedom what about the cultural differences you know saudi arabia just gave women the right to vote last year they still can't drive they ban homosexuality i mean they're one of our biggest allies do you really think that we should be interfering with cultural timelines and different historical precedence in other cultures and
8:17 pm
really saying that this is the moral obligation that you should adhere to go there were basic human freedoms that we were all born with and given to us by god and we should promote those throughout the world i completely agree with that i'd only say that even america when it comes to looking what were individual states who decided where our great tradition history is when american citizens have decided what marriage is they've always decided one thing that marriage is you know of husband wife and so it would be to end that conversation for the state department for america abroad to push forward one view that is not even majority of you in america home at home what is it about foreign investors coming to america to push their morality of what they see and their countries would you agree with that and use more specifically i'm not sure i could make a huge umbrella of categories are we talking about i mean anything really i mean what if a foreign diplomat came over here and tried to push something that was that they mandated or wanted to legislate worldwide over here i mean it just seems like where
8:18 pm
do we draw the line really with what one country deems to be moral and not i think when i only had a very different my ministry can fund whatever they want to fund and it's not i'm unaware of foreign aid coming to the united states from other countries with strings attached i so i think the clear line is the american constitution. as far as like what americans hold dear and what our tradition is i think that's a very clear dividing line so i mean you know people from other countries are welcome to come and to share their views but america where you know proud advocates of our own constitution i know jimmy is a proud american patriot as well so you know the debate we're having right now in this country is you know in terms of marriages you know what place that has in the constitution and what the founding fathers said thomas do you think that you're fighting a losing battle here i mean homosexuality is more accepted by the day over the last decade of already seen a ten percent jump with the acceptance of homosexuality and gay and lesbian rights i mean what do you think about that i think it's amazing to look at the polling and
8:19 pm
notice that while the acceptance of gay and lesbian people you're absolutely right is increasing and i think it should that hasn't it hasn't you know correlated to a a less acceptance or less you know belief in marriage people can be pro gay lesbians and homosexuals have the right to live as they choose what they don't have the right to do is redefine marriage for the rest of us and so while i think there's the impression that because i am pro marriage for instance that i must be anti-gay that's not absolutely how i feel in the least respect and so as far as a losing battle no i think we're actually fighting a winning battle because marriage is something that's good and worth preserving and i think if you look at every state that's voted on it i think if you leave and look at the vote the states are voting on it in november will see the same thing americans believe that to make a marriage and a husband a wife well thomas you have written that people should change their sexual in taishan so i would disagree that you're not anti-gay but i will tell you i will tell you that public opinion is changing in this country and we are moving very
8:20 pm
rapidly and the issue of same sex civil marriage is very much a generational issue and younger americans more and more are. strongly in favor of same sex marriage i just want to push back on what you said about me it is true i'm a catholic i'm probably catholic and in the catholic church's moral teaching we believe that marriage sexuality sexual expression is reserved to married husband and wife but that's nothing to say about my other positions separate conversation it is that every conversation we want to play a quick couple man on the streets of what people think about this issue that we're talking about if we could just. why not address it internationally i mean just because it isn't settled here i mean it's still something that needs to be addressed and eyeing actually surprised that it isn't settled in the united states it's ridiculous this is a civil rights issue and we shouldn't biting this in two thousand and twelve i think that we're getting involved in a lot of people's business that we have no right being involved and it later on
8:21 pm
comes back and bites us on the behind and i think we need to deal with that internal dark country and i don't know that's something that we need to be involved in other countries with for a long time this in ministration which i voted for supposedly stands for human rights and supports the quality for all has done nothing for damn lesbian people and now that is a lexington in trouble and he want he needs to raise money and excite the base he's announced a quote change in policy that's not a change at all. so it seems like people are pretty divided about the issue do you think jimi that this was politically pandering to the gay voters with obama's endorsement of same sex marriage and also this kind of international appeal i absolutely think that the same sex marriage position is a political. strategy of his it has been throughout his whole career from the time
8:22 pm
he was a state senator changing positions on this issue however the international piece is is something that is not new as i said before george bush is ambassador reagan spoke out on this and and it's something that deserves a higher profile do you think that same sex marriage position as you just said it was just political pandering to kind of what will it take i mean if you guys can't even agree on this issue here you know you're two americans in this country we have the country pretty much divided right in half what will it take for people to really agree on this issue well it's happening all over the world some countries are choosing to. have same sex marriage and some countries aren't and it's just a long dialogue that we're having in this country and in other countries and why i just don't understand really the role of this country to take this about i mean like you said we have a lot of other priorities on our plate right now is it really the job of the
8:23 pm
government to do this it's the job of every individual to speak out when when somebody is being wronged and when you see bigotry you should stand up to it and it doesn't matter who you are or where you are so we just sent marie carmen a point day to el salvador to be ambassador as a pro gay rights advocate as we said how come we're not setting program gay rights advocates to countries like uganda or saudi arabia. you know i would say i'm not sure that's entirely fair question i think you know per people's personal views are necessarily how they're going to serve in an office you know i would hope that the global consensus i think the one that strikes the right balance between respecting human beings who are you know whether they're coming from and respecting a core civil institution like marriage would be complete on the side of affirming gay and lesbian people's rights as human beings while also affirming the course of the institution of marriage as you know husband wife and i think that makes sense as a good global policy and i think it answers
8:24 pm
a lot of the questions because that one on the one hand removes what i see as bigotry on the other hand affirms or i see is the right of a people no matter where their country to stand for saying it is good and i believe that for the for the future for our children for civil society they're bringing men and women together to make and love and raise and create the next generation of something that is not just an american ideals jamie says it's universal ideal so speaking against bigotry or do you see any hypocrisy in not advocating rights to gay couples in this country that want these same options access to whatever it is that people get the you know it's not just the institution it's actually the rights that are granted in accordance with the it's a sure i think you put your i think you put your finger on it which is that the great american achievement is that you were able to disagree civil and someone who has strong pro-marriage uses myself or jimmy strongly disagree about what marriage is we have that right within the american democracy to argue for those views to use every you know every means our disposal to do so that's
8:25 pm
a good thing but again like what i disagree with strongly is equating anti gay and a mess with being pro marriage that's that's a that's a bridge that i think that gay rights activists have never really at been able to bridge because the vast majority of americans simply don't feel that when they vote for marriage they're discriminating they don't that's why they continually vote that one way. and you have the response just think that he believes in freedom to a point and he's drawing a line at freedom and i think that you're either free or not free thomas but i'd also say that yeah you know i happen to agree with thomas that marriage is a good thing i think it's so good that gay people should have it to. now is jamila salvia co-founder and executive director of go proud and thomas peters culture director for the national organization on marriage. pro war propaganda for hipsters daniel klaidman former editor for newsweek magazine has produced a slick michel gondry style animated antiwar pro drone video on the daily beast
8:26 pm
segment insinuates that muslims in pakistan are grateful for u.s. drone strikes even when they kill innocent people. no responsible american president given this option allow al qaeda to plot attacks against the homeland unmolested the accuracy of drones and relative minimisation of civilian casualties made the minute you resist will tool for president obama. so basically craven saying that it would be irresponsible for a sitting president to not employ drones to kill al qaeda in pakistan he also cites the low civilian casualty count as another irresponsible reason to use drones well daniel the reason the administration can tout such a low civilian casualties is because they automatically considered every military age male in a strike region to be you can have a combatant let's take a look at another segment of the video. for some critics of drones it's the almost supernatural effectiveness of the weapon to see and she's just served in the most
8:27 pm
drone operators can linger over targets for hours or even days but surely they got the right target in sight one american drone operator waited until a suspected militant was finished playing with his small children before pulling the trigger i mean hell fire missiles and it is my all that's so sweet the clips humanizing drone operators saying they linger for days sometimes to make sure they have the right target and that one operator was kind enough and told waiting for a child to leave before blowing up someone on the ground interestingly enough reports actually show the exact opposite that drones actually target innocent people and mourners of the dead the video continues to make the claim that tribal muslims fear al qaeda in pakistan more than they do us drones he must miss the petition filed by pakistani families are there this year pleading the u.s. to halt their drone use overall message i got from this piece of slick propaganda come on guys trust our president let him do his job forget about the eradication of habeas corpus or that old fashioned concept of proving guilt before murdering
