3:00 pm
british authorities are ready to tell for breaching his bail conditions. at the ecuadorian embassy in london while the country considers whether to accept him as a political refugee. egypt's former president hosni mubarak is said to be in a coma. after the presidential runoff. despite attacks on a ranging media war a raging media war including false reports that tens of thousands of russian and chinese troops would have been deployed near the country.
3:01 pm
on screen online this is r.t. with international news and comment live from new center here in moscow. facing arrest british police say the wiki leaks editor has violated his bail by seeking sanctuary at the ecuadorian embassy in london the world's most famous whistleblower has asked for political asylum in the latin american country to avoid extradition to sweden. at the embassy there in london while our reporter laura smith is scotland yard and my colleague talked to both of them a little earlier here on r.t. . well behind those closed doors and julian assange is taking refuge at the moment you can see some of his supporters have gathered outside here this morning now still a clear indication of exactly what the decision is going to be of course a huge amount of speculation at the moment now a little earlier on investigative journalist government body and from city university had come out of the building and he had spoken to some of the reporters
3:02 pm
here and said that the atmosphere inside was warm and that there would be a statement later on today so we left speculating at the moment of course the embassy here said that evaluating his request it wasn't going to be long before julian assange is going to have to present himself to the british authorities and then he faced extradition to sweden where of course he faces questioning the sexual assault allegations that he's never actually been charged in all at the end of last month after the u.k. supreme court rejected his appeal against the exhibition really a stunt and his legal team we're running out of options now the next big question that everyone's asking right now is why ecuador again a lot of speculation that we do you know that julian assange had previously met the president of ecuador he interviewed him for a show the runs analyse and it seemed to hit it off in the meeting just take a listen but now. thank you president. as you move
3:03 pm
it is really a pleasure to meet you julian least in this way. to the globe of the persecuted. thank you. thank you. to avoid every day. over to you know to do tell us are one of the u.k. or forty saying at this point. well mainly that if he steps outside the ecuadorian embassy they will arrest him as you were saying earlier he is in breach of his bail conditions which are very strict he's been under them for the last eighteen months and one of the states that he has to spend the night at his registered address which is obviously not the ecuadorian embassy and he has been there since yesterday spent the night while inside the ecuadorian embassy he's of course out of reach of the police because it's a sanctuary. the moment he steps outside we understand that there are police officers waiting for him they don't exactly know what their orders are but they
3:04 pm
know that they have to stay there until something happens according to reports says it's working with the u.k. to sort this situation out whatever that means but of course this is not unexpected it was that we didn't think that julian ourselves would just be able to go to ecuador without any kind of repercussions and this is really a last ditch move for him and a very unexpected move of course we know that he's exhausted all his legal options here inside the u.k. he took his case right up to the supreme court which offered him. an appeal but then rejected it at the last moment so now his only recourse in the legal system is to go to the european court of human rights but he evidently doesn't expect that the european court of human rights would be able to help him and of course this is all because of him being wanted for questioning on allegations of sexual assault in sweden no charges have been brought they're looking at sweden is looking to extradite him just for questioning and he has all. with that it's sent to sweden he
3:05 pm
would be extradited on from there to the united states he's pointed out that the united states is a country where the death penalty is still in force and they have also been reports all through this eighteen month process unconfirmed that the u.s. is already building a case against him. the stakes are very high in this it's really a last ditch attempt to avoid being extradited this case is coming to a close. there's also talk to wiki leaks spokesman christine after he met julian assange at the embassy there in london he said the asylum request was triggered by the absence of other legal options and the danger of a sarge ultimately being extradited to the u.s. legal options here in the u.k. . of course very serious that. the swedish prosecutor has stated that he would be put into prison into isolation
3:06 pm
arrival to sweden even though he's not been charged with anything only wanted for questioning questioning which he has been asked to get into for a for a year and a half wanted to be questioned. believe the prosecutor to come over here to the embassy to question him but the. issue of course is the looming threat of extradition from sweden to the united states where we know that a secret grand jury has been in operation long term. gathering information in a clear attempt to. julian and possibly although. we have an indication of that an indictment seal development is already in place but that's one front for. let's not discuss further what might be next for june in the sand with tony investigators who joins us now live from the u.k. tony you've been following the developments around the case all surprising for you
3:07 pm
was this move asking for political asylum. well i think it's a pretty smart move bill actually it's pretty shocking i think in a way britain has lost its moral soul tonight what we've got is a crazy situation where somebody who's actually not even been charged formally with a crime is being hunted down whilst we've got a mean we've actually changed the law in britain over the last year or so to allow people like zippy livni the israeli military minister christmas in two thousand i launched operation cast lead. with the military attacking school children and innocent civilians ultimately you know this is a war criminal is allowed to walk the streets and somebody who's done more for radical publishing than anybody else probably in the last fifty years is being hunted down i just think it's absolutely appalling i think it's a possibly a smart move possibly why is it possibly a smart move if ecuador even does say yes there's every chance that
3:08 pm
a sound will be arrested soon as it sets foot outside of their embassy. well i wonder about that i mean i think it is is rather worrying but. i think he's left with very very few options ultimately the last thing that a senator wants to be taken over to sweden and then to the united states as everybody seems to think he will and you know i would like to see a little bit of real justice here in britain i don't think we've got that right now if there was justice what we'd see is the record of the murdoch empire as we've seen all the criminality involved in that the publishing and the t.v. empire requisition handed to somebody who's a real radical publisher like a sanjay instead he's being treated absolutely appallingly by our british the so-called justices to do you think the same way in sweden tony do you think you could expect a fair trial there in sweden. no i don't think so i'm afraid because you know what we need to see and you're reporter earlier on made
3:09 pm
a very important point why can these swedish prosecutors not just simply come and interview julian either in the ecuadorian embassy and then acquit him of all charges if there is or else charge him if they think that's necessary or else maybe they should have done that when he was under house arrest this is quite clearly a tactic to really to re nobbles wiki leaks this is a very important and it's like that really to be helped not hindered in this appalling fashion if korea says yes do you think that he will be able to escape any capture as it were by the americans is to go there and in effect what is career getting out of it by having its arms going there what's the benefit for ecuador. well i think that nowadays i think what we need is we need to some statesmen around the world with some muscle i would like to see david cameron intervene here somebody to actually say what we need to have is i mean i don't i realise this is a judicial process but i want to hear some support from our politicians from our
3:10 pm
senior politicians for what britain is well known for which is a good free press and that's ultimately that's what a sense has been over the years he's been and he's actually chosen to make this he's home now so i think we should make sure that that is protected that we're not cattle turning to the united states because we really need this guy and i would like to see protection for him rather than hunting him down you know our legal system i think is now sold its soul to the devil if it really helps in. getting him out of britain for a case in which let's remind everybody because they actually got it wrong on the flagship program tim huell speaking on newsnight last night and he said twice that julian assange is facing charges in sweden julian assange is not facing charges he's just just facing questioning and it's these european arrest warrants which need to go or else those prosecutors can come over and talk to a sound and go away and make a final decision about whether they really want to charge him or not then maybe
3:11 pm
justice can be done but ultimately i think until that happens britain should be protecting this man not hunting him down like prey the drama continues tony thank you very much indeed for your perspective on this tony gosling investigated. there in the u.k. thank you. don't forget his own interview program is being broadcast here on r.t. throughout the day and the latest edition is coming up later this hour for you and if you've missed any previous parts of the series always available on a special section of our website that is. dot com. julian assange. it is true he reeks of expose the world secrets these documents belong the united states government being attacked by the united states strongly condemned. illegally. five hundred days now being detained without charge but that doesn't stop us. today we're on
3:12 pm
a quest for revolutionary ideas that can change the world tomorrow. egypt's ousted president hosni mubarak is in a coma that's the latest from the country's security officials amid uncertainty every condition it comes as the results of the presidential runoff a due to be announced on thursday with both candidates claiming victory well for more on what's ahead for egypt i'm joined by slate subject he's professor of political sociology at the american university in rome what do you make of the claims that the military council is using hosni mubarak's health to distract attention from what they're actually doing at the moment. actually they are used to doing that whenever you have tension in the rear and being political. you always get to afford sort of minute details about the critical condition of mubarak you have seen him in two weeks when the sentence was lost on him and he was in. his own cell in the court and he had dyed his hair and he looked fine and he was
3:13 pm
not really looking like. yesterday there was a big the most efficient organizer by the muslim brotherhood because this constitutional constraints that with the boers by the staff of. the president the supposedly. and saw the friend that he seems and saw all of a sudden we began to see in the middle of the demonstrations caring in the. ports about the president the ex-president is clinically dead he is going to announce the news and they made some about that but it did have no effect on the people in the how we put this thing because mubarak too many politicians in egypt this is part of egypt political history he is not part of the future he does not
3:14 pm
affect. the current situation if mubarak passes away and if. he. loses the presidential election this would be a big moral blow to the count of evolution and to the old system so. if that's the when you and many think he will when we see then a direct confrontation between him and his supporters and the generals and the military. of course what happened is that on sunday monday something very strange happened the muslim brothers. organize a very first conference imagine at four am in the morning to announce that the candidate is the winner he tried to create psychological atmosphere and public opinion supporting the candid and presenting the public opinion was a free a complete and so that if. the commissioned electoral commission comes serves the
3:15 pm
two more and the clear is that it is the other candidate is a winner it would be a repeat of the algerian scenario through this was the kind of version that the muslim brotherhood is doing now because of the blowing tension in the country the commission decided that it will postpone announcing the results not the mall but they will wait next week because they have many contestation to examine and some of the alleged violations and saw nothing will happen to a mall and that shows you the exact level of tension those three options now is you will have a confrontation when they announce that this generous defeat and that would leave the muslim brotherhood and the evolutionary is mobilizing against him and that would lead the country into big chaos and the second scenario is that the military council and the muslim brotherhood would reach an agreement pakistani model and which there is the vision of the political party between the military and the
3:16 pm
muslim brotherhood said option is clear that the muslim brotherhood candidate is a window and in this case there will be this violent reaction in this to meet but there will be sadness in the country this is the first time in seven thousand years with freely elected president but this was not the most favorable choice he wanted . to give was that we don't want. and we do not want a military state now we are going to have somebody who would presume. it's as simple as this as your quest to. people will be watching his moves is he going to try to apply his own interpretation of islamic medieval interpretation on the egypt and that would push egypt into the dark age or is he going to. try to accommodate the liberals i mean if half of the population of the heart of the voters did not
3:17 pm
vote for mr. morsi. he has to take that into consideration. thank you very much indeed professor of political sociology at the american university thank you for your thoughts. the euro zone is breathing a sigh of relief after the greek socialist leader announced that three parties have agreed on a coalition government following sunday's election comes after weeks of uncertainty and fears that a party would have a majority in parliament however the crisis focus is now shifting to spain which is set to see another round of protests on wednesday jacob greaves reports. that government will be headed up by mr marson leader of new democracy who won in the recent election freeway coalition that's what we're seeing at the moment now they're going to be out to john together one hundred seventy nine seats in this three hundred seat parliament that could prove very crucial going to be passing as a very unpopular austerity likely in the future and legislation associated with it
3:18 pm
greeks they have some monsters but they're still really lacking in many such as the wave of anti austerity that we see in the build up and with these elections some of the parties in support of it such a new democracy have been shown force to change their tune a bit they say they'll be reese seek a renegotiation when it comes to the bailout conditions or something that germany and other states in the euro zone or is that a flat no to so that's the situation for them now the key word that's a big word when it comes to the euro zone has always been contagion and that's something three never been more problems the right now when it comes to spain spain may already have to see one hundred billion euros in order to recapitalize its banks will no more the figures as they saw the borrowing costs at the moment reaching that that arland portugal greece all face and they have to seek an all out bailout from the euro zone and that's something many people say the years are simply couldn't afford for spain right now you know when it comes to the economic
3:19 pm
situation spain facing unemployment at twenty five percent the highest in the eurozone for stop and that's led labor years today places day they'll be taken to the streets in barcelona to protest the current situation protest against the job cuts we've seen taking place in spain as part of this austerity. a u.s. military investigation has recommended low level disciplinary action for seven american troops involved in the burning of copies of the qur'an at a base in afghanistan the scandal ignited deadly anti u.s. protests among afghans plunging relations between washington and kabul to an all time low and forcing the white house to apologize its not talk about this. political analysts robert naiman from the u.s. think tank just foreign policy joining me live from the states now afghan officials said they had hoped for severe punishment for this incident going as far as life in prison what do you think of this decision to go for just administrative action which could amount to little more than a letter of reprimand and
3:20 pm
a loss of pay. i can't imagine that any officials honestly believe that u.s. soldiers would get life in prison for this i suspect that they are seeing this for the consumption. and public opinion it's hard to imagine how the u.s. government would explain in the united states. u.s. soldiers getting life in prison for what according to i was there i don't know what happened but according to press reports the investigation this was unintentional so it's hard to imagine how. the u.s. soldiers get life in prison for. ten. mistreating you know in afghanistan this was a very big deal but i think the fundamental takeaway from this is not that
3:21 pm
partition or at least in. that there's a fundamental mismatch between afghan society and having eighteen twenty two year old u.s. soldiers in afghanistan in a position of such power to different societies we have two different value systems u.s. soldiers shouldn't be in afghanistan in the first place and they shouldn't be wielding this kind of power because the fundamental mismatch in values and that's what u.s. troops should get out of afghanistan but nevertheless looking at the reaction that we saw from the afghans this is certainly not going to help relations already strained relations of course between u.s. personnel and the afghan people when we know of course at the time of the incident u.s. troops and dozens of afghans actually died in violence that followed it this isn't shorty this decision this sort of soft approach to disciplinary action is that going to inflame the situation among the afghan people. meaning that you know that . actors in afghanistan. how they want to. respond to this
3:22 pm
sure. as i said u.s. authorities have two different audiences that they need to respond to on the internet can stand in the audience and see but i think ultimately the if you know people become convinced in afghanistan that u.s. troops are leaving and. then that's going to do more to deescalate tensions then anything that will come out of this incident or any other incident you know there's going to do so in the first part of this year every month there was a new there was a koran burning there was just a christian video. so there are going to be incidents as long as u.s. troops are now standing as long as your world in power and they're carrying out so you said severe punishment would in any way deter the potential of those incidents
3:23 pm
happening again it's just a matter of fact while those troops so that you think it's going to happen even though it's not going to be too long before they leak if it's not this it's something else it's a fundamentally unstable situation politically unstable situation to have sixty eight thousand young men and young american men with guns playing in afghanistan and exercising police there is a fundamental you know all over the oral people have problems with their governments but all over the world people see it differently when the problem is that they have with authority or problems with foreigners. in particular when the foreigners are from you know sort of the world and from a totally different political and religious culture so no punishment in this case is going to change that fundamental dynamic these incidents like this will continue until the u.s. troops are withdrawn least until people expect them to be withdrawn its thank you
3:24 pm
very much for the road. just foreign policy there in the usa thank you for your time here in r.t. . to say they are committed to completing their mission in syria seen as key to ending violence despite the early decision to halt it because of security risks observers claim they've been given safety guarantees by the syrian government but not from the opposition has been a spate of fighting in the country with a major media war also gathering pace. reports from new york. head of the united nations supervision mission in syria general robert mood briefed the u.n. security council on the state of syria and more importantly his decision to suspend the missions activities according to general mood supervision mission in syria can resume once he feels that the observers will be safe and secure as they monitor syria he says the government has made a commitment to ensure the safety of the u.n.

workers but so far the opposition group has not the commitment of the government the opposition to the safety and security and the freedom of movement will do observers the government express that it clearly. lays. statements from the opposition the as the head of the u.n. mission in syria was briefing the international community about the crisis taking place in the country media outlets many of them were reporting stories indicating that russia was sending or attempting to send attack helicopters to syria a claim that russia has denied there was another somewhat outrageous report about some a legit military exercises that were scheduled to take place between russia syria china and iran now the reason i say outrageous is because when you listen to the numbers of this report claiming that ninety thousand soldiers would be
3:26 pm
participating one thousand tanks one hundred warships that sounds like a humongous exercise to take place between countries and of course to include one country in the midst of his own conflict now the russian foreign ministry immediately denied this report saying it had no merit there were no facts to it and also russian officials say that those reports. being unleashed by many western media outlets are part of a false information campaign being spread about syria so it is more important than ever right now with this considering the state of the syrian crisis for the information that is being provided by media outlets to be factually supported so here we see that the international community is not just dealing with a. conflict in syria there's also an escalating information war
