nato condemns the sitting down of the turkish military jet by syria while damascus maintains it acted in self-defense by targeting the plane over its territorial waters on friday. president putin says russia stands by the two state solution to the palestinian conflict but he held talks with president abbas some. euro zone crisis claims it's victim as cyprus on for a multi-billion year old pal out to rescue its feeble banking sector and finance its debt.
7:01 am
its three pm here in moscow this is r t coming to you live from new sonali with our top story the nato has held an emergency closed door meeting on turkey's request after one of the country's military jets was shot down by syria claims it was an act of aggression to mask its maintains it acted in self-defense here's our correspondent tusshar silvio with the latest from brussels. very short statement had come out after that meeting due to quote most and he said that serious action in downing the turkish plane is unacceptable added need to condemn sit in the strongest possible terms and stands by turkey in solidarity when asked to elaborate on what specific actions could follow after this he he simply did not want to give any details and he says that he hopes and things that it just will not happen again we have to remember that this was
7:02 am
a consultation they decided to be the consensus that came upon is the strong statement that was far as what's going on between syria and turkey is concerned that tensions are certainly rising but for now it's a war of words of rhetoric syria maintain that it is correct in its action that it will simply defending its airspace and that it felt it was an act of a hostile act from turkey while turkey maintaining that syria in fact had violated its airspace several times in the past and it was not down that none of those planes or helicopters had been down and therefore this is just a normal it happens all the time in the region and therefore what syria did was a hostile act so you have the words of two sides going against each other as far as the international community for now is concerned they've stopped short of saying that there should be any military action but for sure there are some voices calling for stronger actions against assad in the syrian regime but the priority for now made to even said that the priority is to defuse the tension first and foremost.
7:03 am
but turkey claims it's down jet was unarmed and was simply testing the country's radar system but the head of an independent syrian media outlets was probably spying on damascus. it's good we're just saying. we know for a fact that it was locked and decided it was actually. artillery that shut it down with a maximum range of five with it on toes on lead so what was that because she sounds i'm doing fine goes away from. our land or our territorial water i don't think the needle or any legal. justification for putting any more pressure on syria it's something else that the jet was doing over have static or doing or trying to spy on the syrian army's movement in that area because there is a kind of how dare you to be this close to the syrian border there is actually a sense of order or some kind of. intelligence one it's

area itself heavy fighting between government troops and rebel forces has reportedly broken out on the outskirts of damascus or news team in the city center says heavy gunfire and explosions can be heard in the distance now the heart of us as government has seen an increase in terror and surge of attacks and recently violence is escalating across the country with the hamper u.n. observer mission found to make a difference by one unconfirmed reports suggesting british special forces are active. the next hour r.t. interviews a top syrian diplomat who defends the country's continued purchase of arms from the brought. a nation currently under attack syria has the right to procure a weapon that it can use to protect itself its sovereignty and its people of the countries that have been supplying the terrorists with weapons this is a proven fact that we have brought up time and again the united states and france

and some of the gulf nations have been providing the militants with that one which in turn contributes to escalating violence in syria we lose our troops every day to terrorist attacks and we knew civilians who were killed by militants for no reason simply because an insurgent instructed to kill a certain number of people in a specific area when armed rebels intimidate should produce into shutting down this store this is presented as an anti government protest where is it is really submission by business owners afraid of their property getting down if they disobey . getting israel and palestine talking again was the focus during president putin's meeting with palestinian leader mahmoud abbas on tuesday party's policy or has been following putin's visit to the middle east. focus of those talks will be stalled israeli palestinian negotiations that haven't seen any kind of breakthrough last
7:06 am
night monday the russian president met with the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu it on yahoo asked him to pass on a message to president abbas that israel was willing to sit down and talk but a bus has responded in saying that they can be no negotiations for as long as israel continues its expansionist policies in the area also on the agenda all the issues of iran to this end the russian president urged the israeli leadership not to conduct any kind of strike he said that sanctions were counterproductive and he said that they needed to be a diplomatic solution the russian president also met with his israeli counterpart last night shimon peres at that meeting he said that israeli russian relationships are important he reminded president hu's and that moscow had supported the establishment of the jewish state back in one thousand nine hundred eighty eight at the same time he said that peace in his role was in russia's interest it was in the region's interest and certainly it was in international community's interest.

coming up here on r t in just a couple of minutes we'll report on the radical islam in germany and why the government's attempts there to curb its spread are having little impact. if you as mine sweepers arrive in the persian gulf western nations theory wrong will block the region's vital september. but first cyprus has become the fifth euro zone country to ask for financial help in the form of billions of euros to prop up its selling a commie the government there says its banking sector has been heavily exposed to the crisis in neighboring greece and cyprus plans to continue talks for a loan from outside the e.u. from contraries just russia or china it follows our than portugal greece and spain all of them which are far away from brussels earlier spain saw twenty eight of its banks downgraded by the agency moody's after madrid ask for a loan of up to one hundred billion euros crisis researcher dr bruce says the
7:08 am
eurozone is trapped in a vicious circle. what we see now is that this this crisis reached sort of a tipping point especially in in the case of cyprus and spain where would economists call the duma to sort of the mutual dependence of banks and states and one another has reached the point where the state is no longer capable to prop up its own banks and the banks are no longer capable to prop up the one government so basically what needs to happen is that external forces need to come in to profit off this real government so that it can continue getting out its own banks there's an ironic situation one hundred billion is not enough for the spanish banks will probably need a lot more and i think within a year will see another european bailout for the spanish banks coming along and at the same time these bank avail outs for the for the spanish banking system will be passed through. the spanish government can directly and this means that it will add up to the sovereign debt of spaying and as a result will make it more difficult for spain to repay its debts in the long term
7:09 am
this one hundred billion euros that's being piled onto into the spanish banking system right now will add up to fifteen percent. in debt for spain and this is the real thing that we should be looking at because this will this will actually make it more likely that spain needs. a bailout in the near future. south korea has announced plans to build a new naval base near its border with north korea the base will include barracks and a training ground to accommodate around one hundred troops but the base will be located on one of five south korean islands established by the un them in one thousand fifties but dangdang refuses to accept so ownership of the island borders been the scene of several clashes between the neighbors the most recent attack happened in two thousand and ten when the north shelled one of the yellow sea islands killing for. more on this development we're now joined by corbett for news and information site the corbett report with us on the line live from japan james the border region
7:10 am
where the base will be is located is disputed by north korea as we just reported what kind of reaction can we expect from pyongyang. well the important thing to remember about this is that it is in fact the second provocation in less than one week from from south korea against north korea in fact just on monday pyongyang was protesting the use of the north korean flag as a target during some joint military exercises that were being conducted very close to the north korean border some u.s. north south korean military exercises they were actually using the north korean flag as one of the targets in their exercise for the first time and it was seen to be a provocation so on monday pyongyang was registering their complaint about that and then comes this announcement so this has to be seen as something of an escalation that that may indicate an increase in border tensions and perhaps even military tensions between the two entities the question is why now what's really changing what what dynamic is changing between the two countries and it has to be understood
7:11 am
that there is something of a quiet revolution happening in north korea in terms of its relations with china since kim jong un took over and the wrestling area in the eastern part of the china north korea border closer to to the russian border they have a special economic zone called rest on where they china has invested over two billion dollars worth of infrastructure in the last year alone to build roads and and other things that may be part of an infrastructure whereby china will be able to start investing more and more in north korea and south korea may see that as a type of threat against their their one leverage over north korea which is their food aid and their monetary aid to the north and if china is investing more and more north korea that kind of gives it gives them more of an advantage in that respect so we might see some mounting military tension too to try to regain south korea's predominance over north korea while south korea's defense ministry says it's aiming to bolster its forces in the area so that's not
7:12 am
a secret i mean we expect north korea to do the same a boost and the number of their troops. that's certainly a possibility i think we have to be skeptical about the really what kind of forces north korea has to muster and whether it would be an adequate response to to the threat of a south korean invasion of course undergirded by the u.s. military umbrella that it that they lie under but but certainly i think pyongyang will have to react in some way at least to save face so we could definitely see some sort of boost in troops along the border or at least some sort of formal protest over the plan. and this border along the yellow sea of course the scene of previous deadly naval clashes between the two countries what are the chances that we could see similar violence after this announcement. well certainly there has been violence there in the past as you indicate and and it is a an area where both sides are have shown willingness to to aggress in the past so it certainly could and probably would be the point of the flashpoint where
7:13 am
a conflict would occur if there was to be a military conflict i'm not sure of where exactly at that point yet but certainly if this is part of a rising crescendo in military aggressive postures it could it could end up there and certainly we have to at least be aware wary that that's a possibility in this climate. north korea's reportedly completed a base for troop carrying hovercraft about fifty kilometers north of the island do you think so the announcement is maybe a response to that. it could be seen that way but i think we have to be very skeptical about those reports that say referencing some reports about colombo where apparently north korea has built some hovercraft a hovercraft base capable of storing up to seventy hovercraft but that report sources back to some reconnaissance photos and in fact a anonymous official leaking to them to the media and it's south korean official and and as far as i know there's been no actual confirmation that there really are hovercraft there perhaps there are but whether seventy hovercraft would pose
7:14 am
anything of a military threat to south korea i think is a bit laughable so i don't i don't think it can be really be seen as a justification for any type of military increase in tension and to and at any rate we have to be as i say very skeptical about north korea's ability to put up much of a military fight at all given that they like to parade nuclear missiles that turn out to be paper. cutouts as confirmed by photos of their parades and things of that sort so so anything regarding north korea's military capabilities especially when coming from anonymous officials in the south korean government has to be taken with a hefty grain of salt. james corbet editor of news and information site the corba report live with us via broadband from japan. well look now at some world news in brief for you this hour eleven people have been killed in two separate blasts in iraq the first bomb exploded outside a store northeast of baghdad killing five people and injuring three six others were

tricks that might have up at slieve including taking some measures in the strait of hormuz but i think that you can also look at this from another angle president obama has been accused the law by birth the israelis and by the republicans of being too soft on iran had recently a number of senators even sent a letter to obama urging him to make the military option appear more credible that might also be related to some internal factors inside the u.s. and also related to american genuine american fears that israel might go ahead and launch unilateral strike so by i think by taking this step as well the american administration might be trying to satisfy israel and keep israel reassured that it's taking up this situation it's in control and. allow iran to go to go too far and then in addition to the fact that it is also presenting

because it's neat sponsored saudi arabia. generally point policy pals it's not only germany that's concerned about the spread of cultural radical islam a few years ago france outlawed the full face veil norway has also banned saudi funded mosques but as western countries are increasingly taking a stance against radical islam their foreign policy goal but seems to promoted salafi and related to how the movement's a seeing a major resurgence across the middle east especially in countries affected by the arab spring in the wake of the arab spring we've seen a growth in radical islamist power increasing in its influence there is an overall agenda that is taking hold in the middle east and a lot of this is due to the involvement of washington and london in particular the

intelligence agencies in the west have been seeding and backing radical islamist groups there are ties and links historically to al qaida and also the saudi arabian ruling regime and washington have worked together. for a long time while giuliani's far less vocal in the need for regime change in syria than it was in libya as an agent member is still in favor of and forcing so-called democratic changes even they've those changes are likely to empower groups that are now banned in germany itself acts on a boycott artsy berlin. some u.s. figures are urging ecuador to accept julian assange just political asylum request a letter signed by michael moore oliver stone and noam chomsky among others has been delivered to the countries of the london embassy where science has been seeking refuge since last week and in fact noam chomsky joins us sots in his latest

almost two percent but today we are seeing some positive data and that could be one of the reasons why futures are higher. the commerce department said that new home sales rose. but not expected. to actually say rose to a two year high in the month of may so that's definitely supporting the equity markets there and let's not check out the currency market and at the moment here's what it looks like the dollars trading pretty much a lot to chew the euro although the euro is losing just a notch and of the russian ruble is gaining two both the dollar and the euro and. is recovering some ground but it's still trading pretty close to eighteen month old lows south korea is going to hold imports over a rainy and oil starting on the first of july and not following the e.u. imposed the ban on ensuring tankers bringing
