it is a pleasure to have you with us today. police. said coal miners who have converged on madrid in the country's latest huge protest against austerity cuts and they're angry at the government cutting subsidies to the mining sector by almost two thirds. as the latest. escalating violence today it's a continuation of what we've already seen in the past few weeks there already been pockets of protests around spain on reports that the government is planning again to cut even more subsidies to different industries in spain and today we're seeing the miners coming out onto the street tension escalating between them and the police essentially they are very angry at the fact that the subsidies for the coal mining industry is going to be cut by around two hundred million they say that about the russians about thirty thousand jobs according to the government that this
10:02 am
is a very highly offended highly subsidized industry but again given the situation that spain has been going through for the past few years now is the crisis started this is just in addition to what these people are already go we through twenty four percent unemployment in spain this is already before seen by a lot of people observing speed as the government continues to ask for a bailout from creditors as it continues to cut subsidies cost benefits for people but social upheaval social unrest is going to continue certainly it's not going to be surprising that the other spaniards would be coming out in solidarity with the miners because everybody is going to be affected by the cuts announced by a spanish prime minister he's planning about sixty five billion euros in cuts now and let's not forget why he's doing this this is the fourth tranche of cuts in spain and this is in exchange for the most the more recent one just a couple of days ago thirty billion euros for their bank bailout so this is again the condition set upon spain so in general i'm just going to read to you some of
10:03 am
the counties going to do increases first of all in the tax system so that will be cutting in consumer spending power he will also be cutting the bonuses unemployment benefits for those out of work for six months this is like a laundry list of just continuing costs of of what is already existing and so we will see more people not she's probably the miners again as i said earlier what's important to see here is the social upheaval in spain it's not unexpected entirely given the circumstances the country is already an. artist or city reporting that will mean time journalist and a writer job the spanish government is breaking its election pledges. these measures are taken against what the government had been promised been promising during the electoral campaign they said they would not raise taxes that would not raise the v a t that would not touch the holidays and the salaries soft public workers well they are doing that now so it's obviously yes we are under the
10:04 am
control of brussels there's no doubt we need to save the banks of course we need a banking system but the problem is that if to save the banking system we have to put in danger all of this money said kaname i have to remind you that spain didn't have a huge debt actually it was one of the lowest in europe now if it will go up to ninety percent of its g.d.p. and this is because of the banks so people are angry about that they think they can cope with these protests partly because. mining regions are of course very localized in certain areas of the country this are a small area just the truth is that the miners are getting a lot of solidarity because many people relate to them and sees their problems their own problems so well maybe the government is in for a surprise in that sense. you're watching on t.v. now tough negotiations have been taking place right here in moscow with russia's top diplomat the meeting being held there with the syrian national council the arab
10:05 am
countries main opposition alliance but the talks brought no meeting of the minds with the group insisting president assad's regime must be deposed before there will be peace while. standing by crucial talks between both sides are anything to come from this visit by the syrian opposition right here to the russian capital. in terms of optimism. after the talks we did hear from the syrian national council leaders sort of reinstating their demand that assad step down in fact they upped the demand saying that everyone associated with the current assad government must step down for talks to continue they also told us the head of the delegation had called for help from the u.n. security council in the form of a military intervention saying that we know what we know what reality intervention is all about essentially perhaps that is the option that they see forward for syria so you know for the situation the hope was that these these opposition groups can
10:06 am
sort of bridge their own internal divides in order to try to talk and negotiate and come to the solution although we have statements like this essentially calling again for action to remove assad blaming the russia for supporting the president assad that wasn't in the words of the opposition groups today it doesn't really look like the sea is going to be a solid b. assault b. assault b. assault b. assault b. assault. we do apologize to you having a bit of a technical glitch possibly somebody there's a mouse chewing on the cables that was. a little bit later here on the program but also we interviewed. the leader of another group in syria he says the syrian national council simply cannot speak for the. position. toppling a despotic regime such as the syrian government specially if they haven't got the
10:07 am
public on their side and then we have some people based outside syria amazing clear to their the opposition and the people behind them what it really is is a kind of creature of politics and an insult to the people the syrian national council should realize that they are but one group within the opposition and they're not entitled to speak on behalf of the entire opposition while this destruction on the ruling regime winds over ruin and suffer a strategic defeat i feel position when i will head of the country and condition. the minister of foreign policies had a bit of a technical glitch there let me just ask you if i can before we have another one says it wants the u.n. observer mission in syria to stay there for a long period of time what are russia's proposals for this. all the russians essentially want to extend the mission for another three months that original
10:08 am
mission is supposed to expire in about a few weeks what the russians are pushing for is to switch the mission from observing a cease fire that clearly hasn't really worked so far focusing on ways of implementing a political transition in some sort of a dialogue within syria now it doesn't really look at this point like they're having a lot of support from the western members of the u.n. security council the u.s. and european powers namely and of course with the syrian national council calling for the. council to consider a military solution it doesn't really seem like that's going to boost the argument here but again you know these things could change minute by minute day by day so we'll have to see what. you want as the days go by. going on for seventeen months already in all the time. the opposition has basically been refusing to come to the negotiating table to try and find some sort of peace resolution here they are in moscow again they come for talks but again there are unwilling to budge
10:09 am
where do you think we are now when it comes in terms of prospects for international mediation efforts is that all a smokescreen i mean can you can we take any stock in mediation efforts. it's so hard to tell at this point i mean perhaps if you know we wind the clock back and have more powers at the table more dialogue with different factions within syria perhaps things could have turned out differently i mean if we look at the regional players here saudi arabia namely in the iran they have never been brought to the table formally by the powers in the u.n. that was one of the proposals actually that the russian government would come out what they offered to host a talks right here involving more regional players trying to sort of get all of the muscle power possible to try to resolve this conflict peacefully but again it really as you say seems like all the sides of dug in and are really changing from their positions perhaps perhaps perhaps diplomacy really won't be the answer here
10:10 am
but let's certainly hope it won't come to that we all know what happened with the example of libya which. you see coming up there in central moscow thank you. well still to come here on the program. he thought of a cuban leader raul sent a big fan of the russian winter comes instead during blazing summer sunshine for a three day visit right here to moscow he's having talks with russian president vladimir putin. ten minutes past the hour here times in greece a meeting difficult ones for immigrants as well with the economic crisis being blamed for reports of increased racial intolerance a recent human rights group report suggests that police are refusing to give assistance to foreign victims of abuse and are accused of often failing to investigate complaints properly. not takes a look at allegations of xenophobia and austerity referenced greece. all around the country crumbles some parts of greece acing firm foundations take root.

in that we want a nationalistic state all of them should go back to where they came from the word of an elected official as unemployment grows hand in hand with extremist sentiments looking for people to blame for their current plight the golden dawn party has proven to be the prime outlet for public anger get that if you ask me about violence i would have to say yes we do have violence in greece but not the violence you're suggesting it is the violence that thousands of greek suffer from by those goings of foreigners that we have allowed to govern accumulate in our land. despite spouting racism from the podium and scandals including physically assaulting politicians live on air the party still secured around seven percent of the vote in the parliamentary elections. campaigning with a promise to throw all sick immigrants out of their hospital beds and incendiary pledge as having dire consequences as greece and in particular athens have seen

serves to reaffirm those relations in fact this is the third time that they've met the first time back in two thousand in havana cuba and a second time here in moscow one time three years ago and then this meeting that just took place now in this meeting they discussed trade agreements and the economy how they can help each other's economies grow and also diversify also they talk about mutual ways that they can invest in each other's governments and economy another way is energy transportation and telecommunications industries the ways that both countries can work to shore up those industries now continuing in his brother's footsteps fidel castro the cuban revolutionary and former leader of cuba raul castro this is his international tour if you will before coming to russia he was in vietnam and in china before that and then also you know he had a meeting with prime minister medvedev and in that meeting just to prove that the good relations mention that he really enjoyed russian winters and medvedev took
