12:00 pm
clashes shake the spanish capital madrid as the place cracked out of vast territory rally they're firing rubber bullets something to protest as with batteries we've got the. prospects for a peaceful solution but syria's dinner after opposition leaders came out of moscow's talks sticking to their position and calling for the removal of president bashar al assad a blow for diplomacy but other news recovery it's not the increase in violent attacks on immigrants in greece is big blamed on rising nationalism both on the streets and in parliament all linked to the economic crisis.
12:01 pm
welcomes the darkeys eight pm wednesday evening in moscow my name is kevin zero in our top story tonight violence has erupted on the streets of madrid as police launch a fierce crackdown against a mass demonstration today security forces have been falling rubber bullets and using battling against crowds who are supporting coal miners who converged on the bridge protesting an industry cuts for the workers have been joined by thousands of other demonstrators venting their anger at new government tax hikes are you correspondent terser sort of explains what's been stirring the. escalating violence today it's a continuation of what we've already seen in the past few weeks there are already been pockets of protest around spain on reports that the government is planning again to cut even more subsidies to different industries in spain and today we're seeing the miners coming out onto the street tension escalating between them and the police essentially they are very angry at the fact that the subsidies for the coal mining industry is going to be cut by around two hundred million. they say
12:02 pm
that that threatens about thirty thousand jobs according to the government that this is a very highly of funded highly subsidized industry but again given the situation that spain has been going through for the past few years now is the crisis started this is just in addition to what people are already go we through twenty four percent unemployment in spain this is already before seen by a lot of people observing spain as the government continues to ask for a bailout from creditors as it continues to cut subsidies cost benefits for people but social upheaval social unrest is going to continue certainly it's not going to be surprising that the other spaniards would be coming out in solidarity with the miners because everybody is going to be affected by the cuts announced by a spanish prime minister he's planning about sixty five billion euros in cuts now and let's not forget why he's doing business is the fourth tranche of cuts in spain and this is in exchange for the most the more recent one just a couple of days ago thirty billion euros for their bank bailout so this is again the condition set upon spain so in general i'm just going to read to you some of
12:03 pm
the he's going to do increases first of all in the tax system so that will be cutting in consumer spending power he will also be cutting the bonuses unemployment benefits for those out of work for six months this is like a laundry list of just continuing cuts of of what is already existing and so we will see more people not just probably the miners again as i said earlier what's important to see here is the social upheaval in spain it's not unexpected entirely given the circumstances the country is already in. europe correspondent we spoke to journalist and writes in the golan who told us the spanish government breaking election pledges. these measures are taken against what the government had been promised we promise india in the electoral campaign they said they would not raise taxes that would not raise the eighty that we not touch the holidays the salary soft public works well they are doing that now so it's obviously yes we are
12:04 pm
under the control of brussels there's no doubt we need to save the banks of course we need the banking system but the problem is that if to save the banking system we have to put in danger all of the spanish economy i have to remind you that spain didn't have a huge debt actually it was one of the lowest in europe now if it will go up to ninety percent of its g.d.p. and this is because of the banks so people are angry about that they think they can cope with this. partly because. mining regions are of course very localized in certain areas of the country this are a small area us the truth is that the miners are getting a lot of solidarity because many people relate to them and sees their problems their own problems so well maybe the government is in for a surprise in that sense. tough negotiations have been taking place here in moscow where russia's top diplomats been meeting with the syrian national council the arab
12:05 pm
countries main opposition alliance the talks but no meeting of minds with the group insisting the present the sounds rosy must be deposed before the lead piece is losing catherine off reports. after the talks we did hear from the syrian national council leaders sort of reinstating of their demand that assad step down in fact they upped that demand saying that everyone associated with the current assad government must step down for talks to be until you and i they also called the head of the delegation have called for you and help from the u.n. security council in the form of military intervention calling again for action to remove assad of blaming the russia for supporting a president assad that wasn't in the words of the opposition groups today russians essentially want to extend the mission for another three months that the original mission is supposed to expire in about a few weeks what the russians are pushing for is to switch the mission from observing of a cease fire that clearly true all hasn't really worked out so far to focusing on
12:06 pm
ways of implementing a political transition in some sort of a dialogue with them syria now it doesn't really look at this point like they're having a lot of support from the western members of the u.n. security council the u.s. and european powers namely and of course with the syrian national council leader calling for the the u.n. security council to consider a military solution it doesn't really seem like that's going to boost the argument here we were we wound the clock back and had more powers at the table more dialogue with different factions within syria perhaps things could have turned out differently i mean if we look at the regional players here a saudi arabia namely and iran they have never been brought to the table formally a by the powers in the u.n. that was one of the mud proposals actually that the russian government had come out what they offered to host the talks right here involving more regional players trying to sort of get all the muscle power possible to try to resolve this conflict peacefully but again it really seems like all the sides are dug in and are really
12:07 pm
changing from their positions perhaps diplomacy really won't be the answer here but let's certainly hope it won't come to that we all know what happened with the example of libya and fortunately. you're watching out for moscow very good to have you come clean let me tell you what's coming up in the program in the next hour cuban leader raul castro who said a big part of the russian winter comes instead in placing summer sunshine for a three day visit and talks with but even opposed to bringing up to date about that meeting. ok we're going back to a syria we've got some comments on that let's talk to me as a kid he is the editor of the pan-african news wire is on the line from detroit today. thanks for taking the time to be with us you live on r.t. syria's main opposition group has said that the syrian people are suffering because russia used its veto on the un security council to prevent international action being taken against the assad regime what did the opposition want from the talks then in moscow. i think the only thing that the opposition
12:08 pm
wants at this point and alliance with the western countries and the countries in the gulf that are backing them is regime change in damascus they have rejected the initial peace plan that was put forward by kofi anon and the united nations that was in the door of the syrian government by other forces throughout the region by russia as well as china but the backers of the syrian national congress and the syrian so-called free syrian army have opposed any effort aimed at dialogue to bring about a political solution to this crisis what is happening now is that more arms are being shipped to neighboring countries perhaps turkey into syria and we've seen the results of this with the escalation of fighting around the capital of damascus so the emphasis should be on some type of negotiated settlement but the syrian
12:09 pm
government could not negotiate by itself it has to have the cooperation of the opposition forces to engage in this type of a dialogue to bring about a peaceful resolution to the crisis of the opposition at another demand is what at this meeting they're calling for u.n. intervention to resolve the conflict that would work in reality. well the united nations is already involved in the syrian crisis they had a peace team that was sent there several months ago they have not been able to do their work because of the resistance on the part of the opposition forces in syria they have refused to acknowledge any type of cease fire they have continued their aggressive activities against the syrian government and as a result of that the syrian government has had no choice except to engage in these military maneuvers that we've seen over the last couple of days to in fact bring about some type of readiness in regard to its naval forces this anti aircraft
12:10 pm
forces they see this is the only solution to deal with this looming threat against the government and i don't think the role of the u.s. state department has been helpful they have continued to issue threats against both russia and china and also continuing to call for the resignation and the removal by force even of the bashar al assad government in syria one of the one of the main ideas that came out from that meeting in geneva last month russia wants that a unity government between the rebels and the regime how much traction is there for that now at this stage. it depends upon the activities of the syrian national council as well as the free syrian army there already is a coalition government has been brought into existence in syria these developments over the last several months which have resulted in negotiations elections an appointment of a new government and the ceding of
12:11 pm
a new parliament these developments have been totally ignored by the u.s. by the countries that are supporting the syrian armed opposition groups so the onus of the resolution to this crisis strictly lies with the armed opposition and also the opposition that is around the syrian national council as well as the other islamist groups which have refuse all peace plans that have been put forward by the united nations envoy kofi annan what you make of the statement yesterday from president assad that he degrade yesterday to that new u.n. peace plan covering the most violent areas in syria starting with the first to try and get some peace there as a start at least will it stop the bloodshed will the west acknowledge that if it does. if the plan is implemented i believe it can lead toward some type of cease fire inside the country it's
12:12 pm
a gradual graduated process that has to take place but here again it has to have the cooperation of the armed opposition groups that are operating in syria there's been numerous provocations leveled against the syrian government they have been attacks on officials innocent civilians have been killed they have been also moves to violate the airspace and territorial sovereignty of syria turkey so all of these issues have to be resolved the u.n. envoy kofi annan stopped off in both iraq and the islamic republic of iran both of those countries are supporting this new six point peace plan but in order for two are really operate in order for it to really take hold it has to have the endorsement and the support of the armed opposition forces in conjunction with their allies in the west as well as the monarchies in the gulf region obviously
12:13 pm
final thought from you just fifteen seconds worth if you can we know russia wants to extend the u.n. mission in syria for three months is there still room and hope for a diplomatic solution to the crisis at this stage as you see it briefly. i think the years hope are for a diplomatic solution we have to of course put pressure on the u.s. state department on the turkish government and also on the other governments that are supporting the armed opposition to get them to cease supporting these forces in order to bring about some type of negotiated settlement to this crisis thanks ever so much for your thoughts everyone has a q.b. the editor of the pan-african news wire on the line from detroit thanks. hard times in greece many difficult ones for immigrants to with the economic crisis is being blamed for reports of increased racial intolerance these days the recent human rights group report suggested police still refusing to give assistance to foreign victims of abuse they're often accused of failing to investigate complaints
12:14 pm
properly artist jacob grieves now takes a look at allegations of xenophobia in austerity ravaged greece. all around the country crumbles some parts of greece seeing firm foundations take root. we want a nationalistic state all of them should go back to where they came from the word of an elected official as unemployment grows hand in hand with extremist sentiments looking for people to blame for their current plight the golden dawn party has proven to be the prime outlet for public anger that if you ask me about violence i would have to say yes we do have violence increase but not the violence you're suggesting it is the violence that thousands of suffer from those goings of foreigners that we have allowed to go in accumulate in our land. despite spouting racism from the podium and scandals including physically assaulting politicians live on air the party still secured around seventy percent of the vote in the

parliamentary elections. campaigning with a promise to throw all sick immigrants out of their hospital beds and incendiary pledge as having dark consequences as greece and in particular athens have seen a spike in the number of hate crimes i have seen almost they are that's the bad times by organized moves ahead by five thirty and savary see me that these attacks are happening at night and therefore ever doesn't integrate by people who are often for dead and armed with clubs. came to greece two years ago fleeing war torn somalia but he's found no peace in athens i want to wish if i'd known what it was going to be like here i would never have left somalia from what happened to you when you're attacked. they beat me to the ground and ran over my leg with a bike his case is by no means unique the mother of these children was also

assaulted while pregnant the perpetrators remain at large as in neighborhoods like this in central athens where an increasing number of attacks are taking place in the so-called vigilante groups and describe to ethnic minorities. victims say there's little point turn to the police but just not interested. greece's immigrant influx is worse than any other e.u. country is poorest border with turkey where ninety percent of all those seeking refuge and to europe and in a country that circling the drain and nationalist rhetoric flooding into mainstream politics i think that the lads who made the here are the eventual group minute targets that insists it's an e.u. wide problem one which hard pressed greece ends up paying for twice without going to agreement what happens is once one illegal immigrant has been caught.
12:17 pm
in there in another place in europe he is going back to that country that he entered europe. means the end up in greece well athens pleads for more e.u. support the refugees just keep on coming the danger for them is not the trouble they're fleeing from but the fire of extremism entering j.q. greets r.t. happens next piece of foul of the russian winter but cuban leader raul castro has chosen the blazing summer sunshine to begin a three day visit here to moscow including talks of lemma putin as r.t. shaun thomas reports now the two nations have long been friends will be discussing new ways of furthering cooperation. relations between cuba and russia have always been strong and this meeting between the two leaders castro and vladimir putin serves to reaffirm those relations in fact this is the third time that they've met the first time back in two thousand in havana cuba and
