3:00 pm
he starts on t.v. dot com. russia shakes spanish capital with dread this police crackdown on mass and he'll stare at a rally firing rubber bullets and preaching protests as the balance of class. since the conflict in syria dimmer after opposition leaders came out of moscow's talks sticking to their position and calling for the removal of president bashar al assad a blow for diplomacy. and an increase in violent attacks on our grimacing greece is being blamed on rising nationalism both on the streets and in parliament all linked to the economic crisis as we report in this next hour of news.
3:01 pm
welcome this is r t it's eleven pm wednesday evening moscow my name is kevin owen and first in our violence has erupted on the streets of madrid as police launch a fierce crackdown against a mass demonstration security forces have been following rubber bullets and using batons against crowds supporting coal miners who converged on madrid protesting it cuts in their industry the workers have been joined by thousands of other demonstrators venting their anger at new government tax hikes are you correspondent . is staring you in rest. violence today it's a continuation of what we've already seen in the past few weeks have already been pockets of protest around spain on reports that the government is planning again to cut even more subsidies to different industries in spain and today we're seeing the miners coming out onto the street tension escalating between them and the police essentially they are very angry at the fact that the subsidies for the coal mining industry is going to. we caught by around two hundred million they say that that
3:02 pm
threatens about thirty thousand jobs according to the government that this is a very high the funded highly subsidized industry but again given the situation that spain has been going through for the past few years now is the crisis started this is just in addition to what these people are already go we through twenty four percent unemployment in spain this is already before seen by a lot of people observing speed as the government continues to ask for a bailout from creditors as it continues to cut subsidies cost benefits for people but social upheaval social unrest is going to continue certainly it's not going to be surprising that the other spaniards would be coming out in solidarity with the miners because everybody is going to be affected by the cuts announced by a spanish prime minister he's planning about sixty five billion euros in cuts now and let's not forget why he's doing this this is the fourth tranche of cuts in spain and this is in exchange for the most the more recent one just a couple of days ago thirty billion euros for their bank bailout so this is again
3:03 pm
the condition set upon spain so in general i'm just going to read to you some of the counties going to do increases first of all in taxes so that will be cutting in consumer spending power he will also be cutting the bonuses unemployment benefits for those out of work for six months this is like a laundry list of just continuing cuts of of what is already existing and so we will see more people not she's probably the miners again as i said earlier what's important to see here is the social upheaval in spain it's not unexpected entirely given the circumstances the country is already in the source of our correspondents in the ok let's discuss the violent scenes we witnessed in madrid try to pick apart what motive behind this cross to call us don't close no sociologist university of buffalo no good evening thanks for being on our international why did the police so harshly on a protest which appeared in the way we look at it to be quite peaceful what's going on here. well i mean this is just par for the course for the i guess the police in
3:04 pm
spain really since last year we've seen and i mean we've seen in our t.v. numerous incidents of police violence that are really completely not proportional to i guess the sort of protests that are actually taking place. in this case. really they were getting close to the congress they have massive support and i guess a lot of the times lot easier to get people talking about the violence and debating that instead of debating you know the livelihoods of working people in this country the day that yet more cuts or not some of the government's accused of breaking on election pledges made by raising that threat by three percent of the government not worried about breaching public trust how. can i push it do you think. i don't know how much further they can really push it you know if they had any sense of decency or even a fragment of the dignity that miners and the the protesters the indignados have
3:05 pm
that he would resign along with the rest of his government he's broken every campaign promise that he's made some even it comical levels you know his entire party was saying that raising the sales tax was you know one thinkable and all that and now we have a twenty one percent sales tax. and i have to point out also that even though the lot is a conservative party most people who vote for that but if you actually think actually support public health care universal health care and universal access to quality education and they've really gone back on all this so i have no idea what their what their voters voters are are thinking right now today as we as we have this conversation but if if the polls are any indication their legitimacy is eroding very rapidly while you're speaking just now i was just showing pictures of you showed of the police just the way that the police one little snapshot anyway had been hounding those protesters could a crackdown like we witnessed actually boost the protest movement or was it like
3:06 pm
the scale of the way which way is it going to go do you think. i think it's going to the protest movement frankly and i think you know the tendency is to think maybe that. protesters have become desensitized to all of the police violence because we've been dealing with it for a year but today we saw pictures of you know images of an eleven year old child shot in the head with a rubber bullet ok we've seen we've seen policemen with no with no badges of course that's become you know standard operating procedure for them basically. i think what we're seeing is really the impunity of a government that has a lot of people that pertain to you know. sort of groups that had affinity with franco with government the fascist government forty years ago and have never had to sit before a trial since then so i guess there's a culture of impunity amongst these folks and and i think people are are wising up to this you know. i think they see a lot of similarities between what was happening in this country forty fifty years
3:07 pm
ago. and what's happening today because of demonstrations in spain before this but the government's austerity continues as we've seen again today has the protest movement got any hope of success. well i mean it depends on what we mean by by success i mean it seems like an easy answer but that's that's really the case. if you ask plenty of the of the families that have been foreclosed on and all of that . they would say that they have the excuse me not the family that have been foreclosed on rather the families who were threatened with being foreclosed on and had activists blocked those foreclosures they'd say that they've made a difference on the other hand. bank or such a rodeo out there who's a criminal. and acts member of. the next minister of this country is going to be sitting in front of a truck in front of a court along with thirty three other members of bank bailed out you know. bank and
3:08 pm
that's what largely the result of the efforts of the activist movement to put the indignados movement to put together some money and actually start a court case against them which later the political parties you know that that created enough pressure for the political parties to actually take some i don't want to call it initiative because the indignados had the initiative but maybe to gather a little bit of gumption to put it to me to look at the picture first pro-social just a pump of fiber university thanks of much thanks for having me. the big story we're following today the united nations special envoy to syria kofi annan is urged the security council to warn the assad government and the opposition that they will be consequences if they don't comply with the cease fire plan let's get like comment on this of course one of the polls. in new york camarena kofi announced just bain to the region on a whistle stop tour what were the results of his trip can you sum it up for us. well joint special envoy kofi annan says first and foremost it's most important for
3:09 pm
the u.n. security council to act with one voice right now applying pressure on all parties in syria to comply with their responsibilities of the six point peace plan a plan that calls for an immediate end to violence the joint special envoy says that this curity council of course could even include consequences on parties that do not comply with their obligations to to end the violence in syria mr anon also indicated which he has over and over again that he believes that iran could play a very positive role in helping to and violence in the crisis in syria but as we've heard the u.s. and european countries say they do not want want iran involved in dealing with the syrian crisis essentially the u.s. wouldn't wouldn't. sit at a table with in the meantime. so i think we may have lost
3:10 pm
a lot in the little bit of girls want to question if. there's little unity among u.n. security council members on the best way forward for syria what are the disagreements . yeah there are there are a big sticking point between security council members they still remain very much divided and what indicates that is the fact that there's two drop resolutions circulating right now within the security council one has been proposed by russia which calls for an three month extension of the un supervision mission in syria the other which is now drafted by european countries and supported by the us calls for this calls for chapter seven which allows for the security council to authorize economic sanctions among other things against the syrian government if the government does not comply with kofi annan six point peace plan what's missing
3:11 pm
according to what's been reported is that the draft proposed by western countries does not indicate any consequences for the opposition in syria if they do not comply with the peace plan so while kofi annan is asking for the security council to adopt with one voice you still have huge divisions taking place within the united nations and of course this is this is coming more than sixteen months after this crisis began in syria. want to put a new york appreciated we want to moscow tough negotiations been taking place with the russian foreign minister sergei lavrov the syrian national council the main opposition alliance those talks no meeting of minds though with the group insisting president assad's regime must be deposed before they'll be peace. sort of the story . after the talks we did hear from the syrian national council leaders sort of reinstating of their demand that assad step down in fact they upped that demand
3:12 pm
saying that everyone associated with the current assad government must step down for talks to be until you and i they also called the head of the delegation have called for you and help from the u.n. security council in the form of military intervention calling again for action to remove assad up blaming the russia for supporting a president assad that wasn't in the words of the opposition groups today russians essentially want to extend the mission for another three months that original mission is supposed to expire in about a few weeks what the russians are pushing for is to switch the mission from observing of a cease fire that clearly true all hasn't really worked folks so far to focusing on ways of implementing a political transition in some sort of a dialogue with them syria now it doesn't really look at this point like they're having a lot of support from the western members of the u.n. security council the u.s. and european powers namely and of course with the syrian national council leader calling for the the u.n.
3:13 pm
security council to consider a military solution it doesn't really seem like that's going to boost the argument here we were we wound the clock back and had more powers at the table more dialogue with different factions within syria perhaps things could have turned out differently i mean if we look at the regional players here a saudi arabia namely and iran they have never been brought to the table formally a by the powers in the u.n. that was one of the proposals actually that the russian government had come out what they offered to host the talks right here involving more regional players trying to sort of get all the muscle power possible to try to resolve this conflict peacefully but again it really seems like all the sides have dug in and are really changing from their positions perhaps diplomacy really won't be the answer here but let's certainly hope it won't come to that we all know what happened with the example of libya unfortunately. hard times in greece are really difficult ones for immigrants there too with the economic crisis being blamed for reports of increased racial intolerance and in recent human rights group reports suggest that police
3:14 pm
refusing to give assistance to foreign victims of abuse they're accused of often failing to investigate complaints properly is jacob graves takes a look at allegations of xenophobia in a stare at a ravaged greece. all round the country crumbles some parts of greece acing firm foundations take root. in that we want a nationalistic state the but all of them should go back to where they came from the word of an elected official as unemployment grows hand in hand with extremist sentiments looking for people to blame for their current plight the golden dawn party has proven to be the prime outlet the public anger get that if you ask me about violence i would have to say yes we do have violence increase the not the violence you're suggesting it is the violence that thousands of jake suffer from by those gangs of foreigners that we have allowed to govern accumulate in our land and now there was despite spouting racism from the podium and scandals including
3:15 pm
physically assaulting politicians live on air the party still secured around seventy percent of the vote in the parliamentary elections. campaigning with a promise to throw all sick immigrants out of their hospital beds and incendiary pledge as having dark consequences as greece and in particular athens have seen a spike in the number of hate crimes that have seen almost they are that's the part that's by organized groups headed by certain set of very seeming that these attacks are happening at night and therefore ever doesn't integrate by people who are often for debt and armed with clouds. came to greece two years ago fleeing war torn somalia but he's found no peace in athens i want to wish if i'd known what it was going to be like here i would never have left somalia from what happened to you when you're attacked. they beat me to the ground and ran over my leg with

up leaving many tonight we think you liked it artie dot com. a controversial child protection bills been approved by russia's state duma but with claims however it could hinder internet freedom those back in the act say it's needed to shield youngsters from harmful web content but others maintain it's going to lead to a president online censorship. an office got the details. the idea is for the authorities to monitor the internet looking for content which could be dangerous for children it could be instructions on to how to produce and use drugs child pornography of course as well and also instructions on to how to commit suicide and the resources with this information will then have two days to take it out or they will be put on the so-called black list and banned from the internet until. now the law itself does not paved the way for any administrative charges or even jail sentences but is it is thought that respected internet resources for them even
3:19 pm
being put on the black list could already be tremendous hit to their reputation the draft was supported by all of the deputies. who voted and it's now up to the upper house the federation council to review it and then for the president to sign it there was quite a lot of criticism from many popular internet resources in fact you russian version of wikipedia even shut it down for a day in protest since they were saying that until there are clear specific exact formulations of which information could be dangerous for children which could be not dangerous then this could be potentially a hit to internet freedom since it could actually give huge power to the authorities who could then start closing websites down which they simply don't want so since it does make sense there's a lot of information on the web which is both good and bad for children and so what the deputies did is that they introduced an amendment which paved the way for the
3:20 pm
internet resources to take these cases to court which could then overrule the decision of the authorities and take them out of the blacklist on banning them from the web if this information that they contain is found not dangerous for children. of course when you go pers can offer human rights activists in bahrain has been sentenced to three months in jail for criticizing the prime minister on twitter the sentencing fall of the banning of a prominent islamist party over its role in anti-government protests has got up to speed on this now and talk to kelly well most suitable raney shia politician and former member of the council of representatives the lower house of the country's parliament on the line from bahrain hi there thanks for being with us first of all how much effect generally will the banning of the islamic action party have on the opposition movement. actually the modern christian and confiscation of the universe of rights for expression and freedom of assembly people tends to be that them interchangeable to have
