t.v. dot com. his first major interview since he was forced from office paraguayans deposed leader finance lugo reveals to us he was ousted and the threat of widespread violence was against the proposed i knew had a new massacre was being prepared i am a convicted pacifist i didn't want to see any paraguayan lose their blood as a result of that and. also ahead tonight saudi arabia deploys additional troops to its eastern region of qatif where the anger continues to rise with more protests planned after the deaths of two activists at a rally. and u.n. peace envoy to syria kofi annan wants the security council to take a tougher stance on wall both the government and opposition of consequences if there's no ceasefire as people suffer from relentless more.

hello welcome it's now eleven pm thursday evening here in moscow my name's kevin owen you're watching r.t. first in his first major interview since he was ousted paraguayans former president fernando lugar has told us at r.t. that he was forced out after the opposition threatened widespread violence if he didn't go several trade groups have suspended now the country's membership following lugo's impeachment isolating the south american nation picking up the story bringing up today the artes garniture county washington. many describe what happened in pair of wires a quick and quiet revolution the country's democratically elected president was voted out of office by the parliament in a trial which lasted a few hours for poor performance as the opposition said paraguayans neighbors in latin america called it an institutional that threatens democracies around the

region just three hours and paraguayans predominantly right wing parliament voted for nona logo out of office analysts say it's partly because these powerful opposition didn't like the fact that president who was working to expand trade in partnership with other latin american countries like or ally venice well argentina brazil as of now regional trade groups you know sore and marcus or suspended because of president of the impeachment in an exclusive interview with my colleague from r.t. spanish wise ousted president or not all over told us that he was basically threatened by the opposition to accept the terms of this parliament trial he said was warned that if he didn't stand the trial the military and some of the opposition groups would take to the streets with weapons and create havoc take a listen but in the end i see people out in the square and they wanted me to go because of the ministers i knew that a new massacre was being prepared i am
3:03 pm
a convicted pacifist i didn't want to see any paraguayan lose their blood as a result of violence that's why we went along with this illegal process so fernando lugo essentially says that he accepted this snappier trial to avoid provocations and eventually blood on the streets and this is most interesting because paraguayan could be an example of how even the threat of a provocation can be used as a tool to remove a democratically elected leader going to should you come across sport in washington then i can let you know if you don't call it already you will be showing the full interview again is probably going to. to president fernando lugo next hour you are not moscow more for a story talk to a lawyer. on the line from new york hello the change of power was rapid with impatient proceedings done and dusted in just over a day of democratic was this translation as you say well i think it was beyond
3:04 pm
democracy and in the negative sense going the other way and more towards what we would consider a different type of coup d'etat not your traditional coup d'etat our head of state is overthrown by the military or as we've seen in recent years in latin america of civilian and military forces including even corporate media corporations businesses was in the case of venezuela in two thousand and two or even as we saw in eighty two does work or similar things took place in honduras in two thousand and nine in the sense that there was a military involved in ousting a democratically elected president and they also went through this pined of democratic side by using the supreme court the congress you know the the institutions considered to be part of democracy democratic institutions to oust the president and i think in the case of caraway we've now seen this strategy of using
3:05 pm
the facade of democracy to overthrow a democratically elected as the just so if those are still early days it begs the question who and why. well president lugo was was really a moderate i mean obviously he was present progressive he's a pacifist but he also came from beyond the status quo and paraguay he's not from the traditional economic or political elite he's not and all the dark you know he's not part of the two percent of the most wealthiest in the country who are in the majority of land in arab lie and wealth and so this was in many ways a threat to the powers that be in paraguay and then he began to strengthen ties with neighboring nations with more leftist leaning governments in brazil and in argentina and also of course within this well i would agree with believe you know with accurate or and these began even more so than to threaten those very powerful economic and political interests in paradise so i mean i think part of that was
3:06 pm
a big part behind it there were that there were also injured from abroad the u.s. has been trying to establish military base there they've had their feet in the door for some time now lugo was preventing that and i saw and i just think that in the end they decided they had to do it now before it was too late and lugo implemented more reforms that would affect very powerful economic interests in the country and even in his own words to us he said that he had no choice but to go after being threatened with chaos basically with the pressure was that strong are you surprised . i'm not surprised because we saw it happen in the case of on tourist inaccuracy of course president manuel zelaya was forced out of the country in the middle of the night so that even if he wanted to have taken back power with the people who flooded the streets to support him he wasn't physically there to be out to do it but he also didn't fight harder afterwards because of all those pressures pressures from washington pressures from the powerful within the country and this is what we're seeing the case of lugo and again i mean he said it himself perfectly he's
3:07 pm
a convicted pacifist in the sense that he wasn't willing at all to risk any kind of violence in order to reinstate him into power i think that had he assumed a different position then certainly probably still today we would be living a civil war as seen in paraguay you know the little government has received and president lugo still receives the backing of the majority of latin american nations who have not recognized this what in what is considered a de facto government. that those that overthrew lugo franco who's the president now so lugo would have gotten international support definitely from the region if not beyond that you have to have tried to get his reinstated but i think in the sense that he didn't want to create any kind of scene of violence in the country that his decision was correct for his own beliefs and convictions were going to go to. what we've seen in could be repeated leaning left to the american states at some point. scary i think it could be yes and they've already tried to do
3:08 pm
similar types of groups coalitions a powerful business elites together with media outlets and foreign interests have tried. ecuador and believe the interest during the past couple years so i think that now this will be used as a model just as honduras was used as a model for the case of paraguay they're going to try in other countries they may not have as much excess again lugo who was government was quite we he was very vulnerable to this type of situation because he had little control and influence in other institutions the opposition against him was very high so it would be hard to execute this type of who or overthrow in another country where the president has a lot of popular support as in most of the other latin american nations but it could be used in the future and i and i wouldn't doubt that it would have taken the time to be with as much appreciated live on the new york of a golden thank you. so sending additional troops to his eastern region of cutty for the government fearing riots public anger is rising in the area with reports of

what is planned in support of two local activists who were killed at a rally on sunday the demonstration was in response to the violent arrest of a prominent shia cleric the deaths brought tens of thousands on to the streets of the city of qatif for marches that have continued week discontents fueled by a lack of political and civil freedoms and ongoing detentions of dissidents and been ignored by the west which unconditionally supports the regime i spoke to political analyst to motion sally believes washington's backing your saudi arabia helps keep the country's minorities suppressed. they so the starwood is backing of the americans they thought of the people of slaves under their government that's why. they're most true to her. she was. just the there was a setback. right. so for.

did we have next though the u.n. envoy to syria wants the security council to get tough on both the country's government and the opposition kofi annan says there should be consequences if the warring sides don't comply with his cease fire plan pressure on syria amounts of western powers threatening more sanctions and military intervention russia wants an extension of the u.n. observer mission for three months saying dialogue is the only way forward and still rages in the country with online video purportedly showing rebels blowing up tanks and helicopters political analyst jeff steinberg says the main obstacle to peace in syria comes from abroad. fortunately qatar saudi arabia turkey continue to provide financing. significant. to the opposition u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton continues to. non-negotiable demand that

our side steps down and of course these are all violations of the very document that was signed in geneva just two weeks ago president assad proposed to kofi annan on the name of one of his government ministers who he said could be his personal representative negotiating with the opposition a transition government i think that's an important concession and step forward the head of the internal opposition reform opposition movement michel kilo was in moscow and he met with foreign minister lavrov and he said to lavrov that his group would be willing to negotiate begrudgingly with president assad's representatives it's the xterra law position based in london paris and in iraq. who are the big impediment and they're being encouraged by saudi arabia qatar france britain and elements within the obama administration so it's a rough gordian knot to untie but i think emissary kofi are now on with

backing from russia and china is making one final stand and i can only say i hope they succeed against all odds. and the conflict is lost in the sixteen months now was touched almost every aspect of ordinary life i guess you would sadly expect some arab nations to support the opposition of the programs and movies from syria before when television producers say nonetheless is only arming their result is another side of the story if an office got it for you. out of our. though we were in the movie because i learned that you know t.v. soap operas are something syria has been famous for all around the arab world they are considered the regional emotional and funny in all syrian society there would be a man a storyteller who would sit in a cafe or just outside his home and tell stories and everybody would come to listen today this is what syrian drama does it tell simple and timeless stories about good and evil all ages and genders like it and it in no it's all arab people but during
3:14 pm
the conflict in syria its trademark dramas have become yet another divide and factor gulf countries which had traditionally helped fund them withdrew from production live in a huge financial gap and the matters were made worse when the arab league called for a boycott of syrian satellite channels including drama ones they want to fight everything good in syria they don't want us to be. shows our drama to the word to show our history or the way we live the way we love each other the way we taking care of each other's that's why they stop they stop they are fighting us actually. at them with they wanted to destroy not just our country but all of the good in our country and even any positive images of syria in the minds of other arab people. now of countries headed by qatar and saudi
3:15 pm
arabia were among the first to condemn the syrian regime for its breakdown on protesters they were also among the most active supporters of the syrian armed opposition sponsoring and arming the rebels this is the second crosses the syrian rebels suffering from the first one was two thousand and seven after hariri was killed and it was also there was a boycott for syria. and this time as we were hit very strong actually more stronger than two thousand and seven because this time it was obvious that it was a hidden. flush an industry with a turnover of millions of dollars has quickly withered what used to be thirty five fully fledged projects spirit has become just a few small scale venture is determined to keep the show on the road industry professionals have united syria and is an ambassador but we have to protect
3:16 pm
syrian drama because it is. our. voice to the world producers say salaries have also dropped drastically but most staff actors engineers and even directors have agreed to work almost for nothing if only it allows the programs to continue this year in drama shows the lives of ordinary people who live in the old damascus at a time when the country was under french occupation at the beginning of the twentieth century a common enemy and the fight for independence united people they got together showing the best of their qualities filmmakers wanted to keep away from politics but the last edge this sense is very much up to date. reason r.t. damascus syria we've been following the whole huge syrian story of course online along the way if you want to get abreast of it go to r.t. dot com some other stories there tonight might interest you almost half a million years to use and i discovered that a lot of details of their accounts have become public but not happy either why are
3:17 pm
well i guess because you know why but also the day when madrid turned into a battlefield watch footage of a violent police crackdown from the capital we brought you some of the pictures here so we got more online security forces moved in on a peaceful until stare at a bar. next to a court in iceland has ruled the visa must a cause local part of the broke the law in the country by blocking wiki leaks from receiving money the court ordered the company to resume processing donations to the website within two weeks now offers daily fines of over six thousand dollars let's get some thoughts on this from the right side of this pete to touch of is joining us on the line from them peter hi there how significant first of all is this ruling by the by the i so i did call considering wiki leaks has become a course of prior of the united states. well of course it's just an icelandic decision but nevertheless it is a huge moral victory for wiki leaks. the company was found to have unlawfully
3:18 pm
suspended financial transactions. was course this was part of a concerted attempt by people in washington to cut off funding for with the leaks in retaliation for its exposure of information about u.s. policy that of course the people of united states had every right to know the people of the united states and the world have a right to know what the u.s. government is doing they have a right to know the truth about what diplomatic cables say and what diplomats are saying not just in public but behind the scenes in the great strength that we can leaks was to expose the double speak whereby u.s. diplomats were saying one thing in public and something very different in private of course also working the extra light on war crimes committed by u.s. troops in iraq and afghanistan again something that had been hidden from the american people by the american government and military. and what is really
3:19 pm
shocking is that the reaction of the u.s. government was to try and strangle to silence the messenger to prevent further leaks and to prevent further information coming out and i think it's a great tribute to wiki leaks and the icelandic court that they have sought to resist this censorship and to insist on the public's right to know and for freedom of commerce peter i guess some people say there are two sides to this one side should people be free to spend their money as they like such as today to wiki leaks whoever they want to or the flipside should companies equally be free to stop processing payments to if they wish. well of course the argument essentially boils down to this if big powerful corporations can block off donations to. organizations that they disapprove of particularly if it isn't the behest of governments then this stifles freedom of expression you know any one of us could
3:20 pm
potentially fall for such interference and i think one of the hallmarks of a free society is that organizations which we all may or may not a personally approve of should have the right to seek donations and to receive them it is not the business of a contracted company to pick and choose which contracts are all on are and to suspend those it doesn't like that is the road to censorship is also the road to the denial of economic freedom. of course filed complaints in other countries as well against similar transactions the other day it's costed ninety five percent of its revenue most of it can this ruling influence the future of wiki leaks now do you think we'll see some sort of sea change here. i think it will certainly in boulder encourage other people in other countries to charlie the way in which visa or mastercard have sought to stifle donations to release in effect to cut them off
3:21 pm
and as you say i think wiki leaks is ported to lost crops up to twenty million pounds in donations as a result of the actions by these companies i hope it will encourage others to take a similar legal action and to challenge these or mastercard in their particular countries because this is a very very important principle of freedom of expression and the right of people to donate to an organization which is not itself until until these leaks is not itself the subject of any kind of criminal investigations or allegations even today. and wiki leaks have not been charged with any offense so to preemptively cut off the finances of a company that has not been found guilty of any crime i think is
3:22 pm
a very very bad omen it's not what we expect in a free society and it's very threatening a menacing to freedom all going to his ations. all n.g.o.s depend upon public donations and the willingness of banks and credit card companies to process those nations once we give those companies the right to veto who's donations to which companies they would accept on the slippery road known to censorship but indeed to an on free society human rights activist peter tatchell in london tonight thank you for your thoughts. bummer staying in london too for an extra as well which is sixteen days to go before the olympic games kick off there's been a major hitch in the much hyped security plans thousands of extra british soldiers had to be drafted in after a private firm failed to supply the amount of promised guards the company's been paid almost three hundred million pounds to do the job but it hasn't managed to
3:23 pm
train enough staff marty sarah firth reports. the olympic games and now just a few weeks away and the final preparations should be being made to make sure that everything runs smoothly but not everything it seems is working as it should just be revealed the security company past with providing the security for the ill and picked games isn't quite up to the job security gap has meant that three thousand five hundred soldiers have been put on standby to be able to manage this after it was found that g four s. were having significant problems now is a strange sight for many people to see soldiers in the uniform on the streets of london but it's going to be one it seems that could be quite common as it's going to be soldiers who are picking up the slack and having to manage guard gigi's that should have been provided by the security obviously it's expected that the company is now going to be stripped of some of that cash that was put aside to cover
3:24 pm
security staff wages security is really the main issue not just for the athletes who are going to be taking part in the olympic games but for londoners as well and of course everyone who's going to be traveling to the country to watch the games it's a very exciting time for people of course wanting to know that they're safe and so this is certainly going to cause a lot of concern amongst a lot of people that this type of problem has been revealed at such a late date and it raises questions about just how coordinated and ready the security system around the olympic games is. brief one hundred people have been killed in an inferno in nigeria's oil producing delta they were trying to scoop up spilled fuel from a crushed petrol tank when it all caught fire women and children are among the dead there according to witnesses crushes are common in nigeria's poorly maintained road . has been hospitalized after complaining of feeling unwell at his trial in the
