beyond not just diplomacy but any common decency russia's top diplomat slams us threats that moscow will pay the price for syrian unrest and accuses foreign powers of blackmail of a u.n. action against a mascot. first hand accounts of beatings tortures and raids in bahrain as r.t. hears from a journalist kicked out by the regime she shares her eyewitness reports of the brutality against and the monarchy protested. the next england coach fabio capello heads for moscow to put pen to paper and lead russia's promising national football team.

hello and a very good evening from me kevin owen here in moscow you're watching r t it's now eleven pm our top story moscow says it's under arm twisting tactics from foreign partners who want to push through a un resolution on syria which could allow the use of external force people over explains the position outlined by russia's foreign minister sergei lavrov. unfortunately we've even seen some moments of blackmail so i consider it talks only counterproductive and dangerous approach because it is unacceptable to use the observers as a bargaining chip with words well what russia wants to see is the extension of the u.n. monitoring program on the ground in syria now they proposed a resolution to the u.n. security council which says just that's now some of russia's foreign partners have come forward and said yes we'll vote for your resolution if you vote for now the second resolution is being put put forward by countries such as the united states and great britain now the wording of this second resolution is open to

interpretation it could see foreign military intervention in syria now this is something that russia have always been against they don't want to see any foreign military intervention because they don't want to see the situation in syria turn out the same way as the situation in libya prompting sergei lavrov to say that russia feels blackmails let's go back to comments that were made a little while ago by the u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton in which she said china and russia were to blame for the ongoing conflict in syria saying that essentially they had blood on their hands and would have to pay a price no foreign minister lover of reacting well less than pleased he could say to those common saying that this wasn't the way that the poem is the should be done to. some except to be able to blame it all on russia and china and especially to resort to threats like they will pay for this which is beyond not just diplomacy rules but any common decency so far it's the syrian people who are for the

unwillingness of some of our foreign partners to observe the u.n. security council decisions. well those syrian people it's a lover of mention they're all the ones that russia wants to see decide the future of the country there have been claims that russia is supporting the assad government these were dismissed out of hand by sergei lavrov additional troops with those they tell us that we need to convince nasa to step down voluntarily that is simply unrealistic but this is not about our preferences likes or dislikes he will not step down not because we bear came up but because he has the support of a significant part of the country's population. foreign minister lavrov the setting out russia's stall when it comes to the ongoing crisis in syria all of this of course coming as kofi annan is in the midst of his all important visit to moscow to discuss the future of the conflict written middle eastern country. i spoke to brian becker the national coordinator for the answer and he was coalition he says

blackmails common when it comes to big politics. i think the russian foreign minister is in fact being very diplomatic when he says there's an element of blackmail or arm twisting the u.s. government the clinton foreign policy the clinton obama foreign policy is is akin to the way the mafioso works if you don't go our way if you don't do we will break your leg will make it impossible will threaten you blackmail and hostage taking is it is sort of a softer way of putting it in fact in those in the united states hopes to be able to break russia and china down to have them intimidated on the international arena so it can do what it wants to do which is to form an civil war using all available elements of violence pushing aside the possibility of peace in order to accomplish its main objective which is to overthrow the assad government not because the government is undemocratic not because it's anti humanitarian but because it's not

journalists left in the country and says the situation is more desperate. than the . what i witnessed is an increasing increasing repression against the pro-democracy and human rights activists in the short time that i was praying i felt like the situation was actually deteriorating and house and arrests and attempts to silence free speech are all intensifying right now in bahrain from what i could see it is across the country it is it is extremely widespread in villages and towns all over bahrain there is violent repression of attempts to demonstrate and attempts to protest even more alarming much more increase of house raids at night a middle of the night in villages all over riot police coming in surrounding houses brutally arresting people and imprisoning them taking people from restaurants

swimming pools their private homes. this practice of targeting activists and demonstrators fortunately seems to be on the rise and very widespread right now and only time will tell i guess how or how long they will be able to keep struggling but i did not see any signs of people giving up i saw signs of people reinvigorated the bahraini regime is very determined not to let what's happening be exposed and so anyone who's going to bahrain with the purpose of the agenda of trying to show what's happening and trying to really expose the reality on the ground there is jeem wants to keep them out and keep them silent as much as possible. about it. leading figure of all with. this is. going to. the country is. single only a minority within the community it's not sectarian it's related to rulers who want

the hearing in the case of bradley manning the jailed u.s. soldier accused of leaking vast amounts of data to wiki leaks begins today the twenty four year old has already been in jail for two years faces the serious charge of aiding the enemy which if probed could see him on death row more manning's case now with chase murder civil rights attorney journalist and the book the passion of bradley manning chase hi there thanks for taking the time to be with us the u.s. media's put forth all sorts of different motives for why manning allegedly leaked this trove of documents one of his sexual orientation why are the u.s. press linking the two. well there seems to be real difficulty in facing mannix plainly stated motive for these leaks namely that he wanted people to
3:10 pm
see the truth because with out information you can make well informed decisions as a nation those are his words instead all kinds of motives are attributed to him because he's gay which is ridiculous given that they're easily tens of thousands of gays and lesbians in the us military who are not doing things like this because he's crazy which is often how whistleblowers and political dissidents are treated no matter what the merits of their cause. brought it mounting as much as the hatred for doing what he's eventually done a real villain to others because surely there are always circumstances when states need to keep secrets secret. or there can be no doubt that some secrets are legitimate secrets nobody wants nuclear launch codes floating around but it's important to realize that nothing harmful has come out of it leaks and not only that but bradley manning is alleged to have released doesn't even add up to one percent of what washington classifies and makes secret it any
3:11 pm
given year we face a real security threat not from whistleblowers and leaks but from extreme government secrecy and i think the past ten years have disastrous un foreign policy caused in large part by excessive secrecy and distortion shows that clearly if if nothing so significant has come out of it what is the us jumping up and down so much about it. they want to make a big example of him i think it's an artificial crisis. each new wave of leaks has been greeted with hysteria and sky is falling rhetoric of armageddon and none of these dire predictions have come to come to pass or anything remotely like it frankly we need to know what our government is doing there's nothing very radical about that sentiment it's used to be a central part of the american political discourse that you should know what your government is doing course chase the obama administration came into office pledging
3:12 pm
it would be the most transparent government ever and these claims really be defended in light of what's happening to bradley manning now. well this is a nother campaign promise that just lies in rubble. administration did promise to be the whistleblowers best friend and instead they have prosecuted more whistleblowers than all previous administrations combined under the espionage act of one nine hundred seventeen the only supporters that manning does have in the political class are in the margins. paleo conservative right you have ron paul the candidate for the green party in his back to the same with the progressive former mayor rocky anderson but our political class has some real learning to do i mean we you touched on it just now but do you think cases like that of bradley manning and work to actually discourage would be whistleblowers will they just draw more
3:13 pm
attention to exposing government secrets what is the outcome of it all do you think end of the day. well i don't think whistleblowers are ever going to stop bizzle ong as there is injustice and wrongdoing in government there will always be people who had great personal risk in a great personal sacrifice will tell the truth and get the word out and that's a very good thing chase those who thought chase made a civil rights attorney journalist north of the book the power of bradley manning thanks for taking the time to be with us. thank you. more oil has been pulled in the fire of the israeli social unrest mass rallies marking the protest movements first anniversary of been spurred on by an act of self-immolation thousands of people gathered in the streets as artie's polis here reports now. what we see now is the whole issue of economic and social concerns been back in the mainstream israeli discourse and this comes in light of the anniversary protests hold this past weekend around the country marking those social protests that were
3:14 pm
held in the summer months of last year if you remember those demonstrations for the largest number of israelis in this country's history take to the streets of this country now the protests climax on a saturday night when an israeli form a small businessmen sit in south on fire he's currently fighting for his life is in critical condition and he's suffering from a second and third degree burns the sense that he did this because the israeli government was literally robbing him of his livelihood and his future well since saturday there have been solidarity protests held around the country on sunday these two thousand people took to the streets of a major highway here in tell of is in jerusalem there were clashes between protesters and police in front of the prime minister's residence and what we've seen from organizers of these demonstrations is a hope that this incident has injected a new anger and a new passion that will mobilize israelis back onto the streets these protests also
3:15 pm
have a throwback to the occupy wall street demonstrations we saw last year at that time they were slogans similar being valued across here in israel people calling these demonstrations occupy his role as indeed the anger and frustration at the government and the fact that it's done so difficult since last year to address real social concerns as that anger grows people making a parallel between what happened here in israel with this man water solomon setting himself in light with the street vendor who set himself on fire back in december two thousand and ten the netanyahu government following those this demonstrations last who did sit up a committee to investigate but most israelis feel that it has done little to precious to nothing to actually address the concerns the justification by the government has been that it has no pressing concerns such as that. a nuclear iran the question of ongoing violence in syria to to to to address but many people here feel that this is merely an excuse not to put attention on
3:16 pm
a very real concern at the same time there's also the feeling here talking to protest organizers that these demonstrations could move from economic protests to political considerations there is of course the arab spring which never quite moved into its role where they were rumblings there and sit in today's newspapers and some opinion columns you hear coming to say that perhaps this could be the spark that will see the arab revolution finally be firmly implanted cells in israeli society. well middle east correspondent paula sleep well one of the points raised by the israeli government is that it must address relations with troubled egypt caro's post-election limbo as discussed cross-talk debate show that sold out about fifteen minutes from now. what's the point of having elections if you're elected and you can't sit in your position of power you know we're in a situation in transition i mean we're talking about a country that hasn't had the markers the thousands of years they had early elections they had to use a lot of going around that's going on right now if we go if we play it out in
3:17 pm
sequence and it's likely. it's likely to as a foundation for this process then there are possibilities that it can succeed stephen thinks that what we're watching is a transition is a muddy transition where people are stumbling around making mistakes and having teaching moments ago them grow from i'm not sure that we're in the midst of a transition we might be in the midst of a retrenchment. to be with you shortly next former england manager fabio capello is set to take on russia's top football job that was announced today after being named as the new national coach it's hoped he could guide the team them towards qualifying for the world cup in twenty fourteen with rumors of the sun in a lucrative six year contract is a farmer from a sports team. fabio capello a massive name in football famous for leading england for the last four years he did step down from there after falling out with the english f.a.
3:18 pm
but i mean apart from his success of getting them to the euros he did it all to get them to the world cup in two thousand and ten not a successful campaign that has to be said that was part of the reason we went but he comes with a great track record before he took over england he won the champions league he also won league titles in italy and also in spain with major clubs there so he's a big fish in the footballing world and he when he was. in charge of england he did around about six million pounds a year and it was thought in the media that if anyone could perhaps compete with that sort of salary would be the russians were not sure what his salary would be but they have said in the build up to this that he would be a man that would be prepared to stay and work in russia which is something big africa and the guus hiddink the manager before him didn't do. andrew farmer more top stories making headlines tonight thousands gathered in tokyo in japan of nuclear power ahead of the start of a second reactor all of the country's plants you may recall for safety inspections

just the spanish but people across europe of course getting more and more disappointed as we are reporting a lengthier an r t with their leaders attempts to deliver solutions now. talk to one austrian man who's already created his own doomsday survival kit to try and get through it all. it seems like a place where the grass is always green and where every cloud has a silver lining but even in this a deal exciting in western australia there are fears of an economic doom as the. last few years me hail has been converting his house into a fully self-sufficient residence and his reasons are purely economic. if there's only one hundred to get the worst case scenario we're preparing for is the total collapse of the economy there would be problems with food electricity water supply so i want to make sure we could waste this time when money will be worthless. solar panels wind turbine and emergency generator he's now producing more than two thirds

of the power he needs the cows in the garden should provide a backup if supermarkets. and in case a fuel shortages there is also a radial turn in chief. while this scenario may seem to apocalyptic believes the euro collapse and the ensuing social upheaval is a matter of when rather than if the. politicians keep talking about decreasing debts but what they do is just to prove. that a new steps no new solutions on what to do about this whole situation the rude awakening is coming we all hope to postpone it but eventually it will come of this . still ask us to change his name and not to give out his address out of concern that in case of the total collapse his europe proved refuge will be inundated by the angry and hungry as the fears are not entirely foreign to many europeans especially of an older generation this part of the world has to be righted
3:22 pm
therefore frond of the cold war and preparing for the worst was part of the government's contingency plans but the idea that calamity may come from them in europe rather than outside is relatively new and therefore all the more frightening after day kids of increasing crisp aerate the thought of losing basic comforts is still rather hard to take in for many northern europeans but on the other hand a few years ago their southern neighbors couldn't imagine that soup kitchens would become so popular in greece or that food aid would be in such demand in spain some people say the gold care for the government. i'm responsible for myself that about fifty percent of the. citizens may think in this way. but the majority will say no government we pay our taxes and so for we expect that we get. supplied by the government while the initial infuse years behind the euro project
3:23 pm
was at least partially based on the rx to reach the stream an increasing number of europeans are now fearing the opposite. actually we can already see reporting from western australia. if you twenty three minutes past the moscow time let's cross to the prisoners to see katie katie no word about some preparing for the worst in australia better place than living in russia for now at least according to one report you got hold of you you're quite right kevin seems to be relatively mercy here i suppose in comparison with other countries as you say and that's who coming from the i.m.f. are poor because what they've done is they've cut their global growth outlook but they've kept it on change for russia and that's four percent which it in perspective is actually fifty basis points more than the rest of the world so things aren't so bad ten now how will those who have to bear this in mind that the european recession and the u.s. slowdown are looming over the global economy and that we could still be effect here
3:24 pm
in russia possibly next year as i say expansion may slow down but right now is not looking too bad so now i'm also talk about russian billionaires who certainly aren't fair and they hate a toll now these are the ones own health of the anglo russians hincapie pain and they say that they're ready to sell their state to that part that we paid now they won't cash and they want ten percent of b.p. stock in return and this is on the move that could potentially put an end to the. point a bit of fuel that we always cover had other shareholders relationship between b.p. and its russian partners. i initially broke down last year b.p. try to reach an alliance with the state run routes that but that deal was brought by all of the fallout left the company without an operating board so b.p. ended up putting its stake out for sale at the start of the situation to my rosie to have it but we're following at the moment so it is going to wall street see how
3:25 pm
the. right now they did have a really disappointing a figure that came out today it was retail sales and that's really kind of set the tone i suppose and really for resale sellers it was the drop in a row is just three straight months of the crimes for shops are really feeling the pressure to get out to europe as well we see that we had a frappe performance for both the footsie and the does not was a disappointment because last way we have the euro stopped fifty completing his longest stretch of weekly gave him old in two years of us coming off the highs and if we get into the common currency as well we'll be able to see is actually getting and that's as investors really continue to pull between the lack of resolution on the euro zone situation and doubts about the strength of the u.s. economy right now with you see the common currency is indeed gaining as for the ruble there was a stronger performance for the russian currency as for the equities we had gains as
3:26 pm
well as we get into the movers and shakers busy who really benefited i want of the biggest gainers really was a they had a busy day for president putin he came to the offices for a federal meeting the biggest len's ahead dropped forty basis points new call up around one and if we check out the crude prices there is an awful lot of headlines over the u.s. at the moment because there's no rise a full day and that's because manufacturing in new york expanded in july at the false just pace. people were really anticipating interesting to. see how the russian markets react today's prices into maurice i said now let's talk about russia's the mall and they said it's now more since business climate to improve now if you look at that list just there this is the wall bank currently raising well as number one hundred twenty eight and that's in terms of conditions to do business is go singapore hong kong i united states they all feet to the top for an hour
3:27 pm
president putin has said that russia should do whatever it takes to make it to the top twenty within six years so investment consultants rights and capital they came out with a step by step plan for achieve this goal. given the customs union is like kazakhstan and belarus if russia can just adopt the same reforms the best of the reforms that both those countries have done then by two thousand and eighteen russia will have jumped from one hundred twentieth place to thirty fourth place we also think just marginal small improvements which would get russia to twenty eight twenty eight or top thirty place i think that's very doable. optimism to end the business news today have a nice to have a special a monday as well thank you katie because she said thanks for that now in a few minutes small very topical debate as you'd expect from us all to use cross talk show on the air with people of that here with you after i've brought you up to
