well i'm tom arbonne in washington d.c. and here's what's coming up tonight on the big picture. for them from the smallest of small businesses to the largest the corporation success is not achieved alone but with help from society and from the government why are republican so afraid to admit this and i can't think give up on the self-made myth also democrats and republicans alike are calling on mitt romney to release more of his taxes to listen for continue to hide whatever secrets he's trying to keep that and more and it's low liberal rubble and it's been ten years since the infamous bush tax cuts turned clinton serve flaws into a massive deficit and except for millionaires and billionaires the tax cuts haven't
11:01 pm
helped anyone but what america's economy look like without the bush tax cuts or the reagan tax cuts for that matter and with the average american be in better financial shape today without the. need you know this conservatives are piling it on president obama for saying that none of us who have been successful in business did it on our own for saying that we've all benefited from the infrastructure created by the society and government around us the wealthy successful americans who agree with it because they want to give something back. they know they didn't. if you've been successful you don't even get there on your own somebody helped to create this unbelievable american system that we have that allowed you to throw at somebody invested in roads and bridges if you've got a business that you didn't build that somebody else made that happen so we say to
11:02 pm
ourselves ever since the founding of this country you know what there are some things we do better together. that's how we funded the g.i. bill that's how we created the middle class that's how we built the golden gate bridge of the hoover dam that's how we invented the internet that's how we sent a man to the moon we rise or fall together as one nation and as one people. as he said somebody invested in roads and bridges if you've got a business you didn't build that being that infrastructure and you know for example here's mitt romney freaking out. he said this if you've got a business you didn't build that somebody else made that happen. and somebody else's government in his view to say something like that is not just foolishness it's insulting to every entrepreneur every innovator in america. and he
11:03 pm
didn't say that he said you didn't build that infrastructure that those roads and bridges should i use the word those but in any case rich lowry and the conservative national review wrote for that most american figure of the self-made man exemplified most famously by benjamin franklin and abraham lincoln president obama wants to substitute the figure of the guy who happened to get lucky while not paying his fair share in taxes. you know it's really interesting that lowery and twisting the president's words would invoke the names of ben franklin and abraham lincoln ben franklin was so dedicated to the idea that we're all in this together that we need a government infrastructure to make it possible for people like him to be successful but he created the post office he helped organize the american revolution he edited jefferson's declaration of independence and he famously said at its signing if we do not hang together we shall all surely hang separately lincoln had some very specific thoughts on the topic as well he in july first eight
11:04 pm
hundred fifty four he wrote most governments have said some men are too ignorant and vicious to share and government we proposed to give all a chance and we expected the week to grow stronger the ignorant wiser and all better and happier together. and not only did lincoln invision a government that would help the weak grow stronger ignorant wiser and all of us appier he also pointed out that it's not the takers like romney and his capitalist extra banks or buddies who create our nation's riches lincoln says the makers the workers as lincoln wrote december eight hundred forty seven the habits of our whole species fall into three great classes useful labor useless labor and idleness of these the first only is meritorious and all the products of labor rightly rightfully belong but the two latter while they exist are heavy pensioners upon the first robin hood of a large portion of its just rights and went on to say the government should drive useless labor out of existence that romney on their other hand wants to defend the
11:05 pm
useless labor income of the paris hiltons of the world to make their livings sitting around the pool waiting for the dividend check to arrive and then pay a fraction of the income tax the working people must pay romney calls the right of bain capital to drive people out of business liberty here's the result of that liberty. out of the blue one day we were told to build a thirty foot stage gathered together eyes and we built that thirty third stage not knowing what it was for just days later all three shifts for to assemble went into or out a group of people walked out on that stage and told us that the plan is now closed and all of you are fired i looked both ways i looked at the crowd and. we all just lost our jobs we don't have an income mitt romney made over one hundred million dollars by shutting down our plant and
11:06 pm
devastated our lives turns out that when we built that stage it was like build my own cotton. liberty really so what would lincoln have said about that well here is actual words that in one thousand april eight hundred sixty four speech in baltimore. quote the world has never had a good definition of the word liberty and the american people just now are much in want of one we all declare for liberty but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing with some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself or the product of his labor with others the same word may mean for some men to do as they please with other men and the product of other men's labor here are to not only different but incompatible things called by the same name liberty and it follows that each of the things is by the respective parties called by two different incompatible names liberty and tyranny speaking of those
11:07 pm
who would profit off the labor of others lincoln then got even more colorful in his description talking about government is the shepherd who protects the workers the shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep's throat for which the fish the sheep thanks the shepherd as his liberators of the wolf denounces him for the same act as the destroyer of liberty plainly the sheep and the wolf are not agreed upon a definition of the word liberty so here's the simple reality none of us made it on our own and those of us who have been successful in business have made it because we can use the infrastructure of our court system to enforce our contracts have workers who have good public educations and were protected by our fire and police departments among others for takers like romney to claim that he's a completely self-made man and we the people had nothing to do with the success is quite simply another one of his lies.
11:08 pm
is wednesday you ready to rumble join you for tonight's lone liberal rumble our friend cheska chambers editor at red alert politics and adam bitly editor and chief in chief at wright daily so let's thank you both for joining me tonight if you let's get to it the president is catching flak for his comments that have been interpreted well actually he said no one made in america on their own what i find is are as that. he said somebody built those roads and bridges if you have a car if you build a company you didn't make that and he was talking about the roads and bridges and it's been completely twisted out of proportion but still nobody makes on the masters a senate candidate elizabeth warren made a similar argument last year take a look. there is nobody in this country who got rich on his own nobody you got to factory out there could for you but i want to be clear you moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us take for you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate part of the underlying social contract is you take
11:09 pm
a hunk of that and pay for it for the next. so anybody disagree with that for interest sir well first i'd like to point out that the other day he actually did say something more along the lines of what i think a lot of republicans have been upset about the other day he reiterated those claims and said you did make it on your own you didn't necessarily get there because you were harder work or you were smart so to say that you know we're all being taken hardworking people who are not rich and really smart people who are not really hard to say that mitt romney and others are taking what he said completely out of context this isn't the first time he said it other times he said it out of the context of roads and bridges well that's not saying ok for the attack is that he said that if you built a business you didn't build that business and that's not what he said what he said was if you build a business you didn't build roads and bridges that made that business possible but in either case do do we not all agree that you can't you know i own
11:10 pm
a company does this show is a company is a product that i own my business owns this and my radio show as well and the books that i write they're all part of this company and every single one of my employees are public education that we all paid for we get to work on the public roads more using the public airwaves i mean we all paid for this at the assumption here though is that all these things exist only because the government brought them about the roads the schools all the things you just yes they did they do but we also assuming here that they wouldn't exist under any other circumstances if people would never build a private road if the government didn't existence of people would build a school government it didn't exist into this state. even though there are roads and schools provided by the government there's still private need for all these things too so too so you're suggesting that we should that we should just say to the founding of the founding fathers and just good you're going to go back to the whole thing as you say you know this whole idea of starting a government in a country to create the infrastructure so that people can build businesses and can
11:11 pm
be successful because screw that we're going to start all over we're going to take the country stealing from the indians and bring it about your rich people and they're going to build roads bridges i highly doubt that george washington was leading troops into the field so that the government could build i ninety five i mean that's just ludicrous what they were trying to move away from was a central government that paid no attention to the people that they were there were trying to move move away from a government that was that was actually from a transnational corporations was bleeding them dry these didn't you go try was what the boston tea party the king had no attention to the people that it represented we're not arguing that sara lee that there shouldn't be a government everyone agrees that there should be a government for the reasons that you stated earlier the fire police there's a lot of reasons have a government although i wouldn't have necessarily used public education as a good example of why there should be a government for a lot of care education work great until ronald reagan's presidency in the fifty's in the forty's fifty's sixty's seventy's and early eighty's we produced the world's best scientists the best entrepreneurs on the planet the best social theoreticians the best and we named the vehicles that we were the top at it and then reagan came
11:12 pm
along and put bill bennett in charge of the education department and took a meat axe to our schools and thirty years later we got a disaster talk about president coming along and creating and a disaster for education president obama is the one who got rid of the d.c. opportunity scholarship program and that was something that helped a lot of low income kids be able to go to better school year we're going to talk about it just ok you're going to be i'll just leave your point and i will concede that and let it stand but this is this point of of business i don't understand at some point the american people are either going to say ok everybody is rich got there because they're just so smart. or everybody who's rich got there because you know we all pitched in a little bit isn't what is not one of the option is to make rich people sure we do we our taxes for you know that more than a bit more than sixty percent of all court activity the united states is business contracts we're paying for that with our taxes corporations are using it they only pay seventy percent taxes you know that we're here suggesting that the only reason
11:13 pm
that these people are so successful is because the government provided men with all these tools to be successful and i guess that i would say that they have any i will continue this have right after the break more rubble after the break. wealthy british scientists on. the rise. market why not. come to. find out what's really happening to the global economy with mike stronger for a no holds barred look at the global financial headlines tune in to the report.
11:14 pm
11:15 pm
. while back that that i was alone liberal rumble joining me now are francesca chambers editor at red alert politics and adam bitly editor in chief at net right daily you got to get editor in chief somehow and if you're in publisher editor and publisher way cool well now you've got us the book at ari fleischer is increasing out of it romney to release his tax returns now eighteen these are not democrats these are republicans george will michael steele bill kristol dick durbin meanwhile to stick the knife and he of course being the democratic party is promoting his financial disclosure to reduce taxes even abuse act which says that anybody who wants to run for public office and has a foreign swiss bank account basically has to disclose the financial information turns out in iran these two thousand and ten tax returns that he released he didn't
11:16 pm
release the swiss bank account parts of that he referenced them but he didn't release them so we don't actually know what happened so dick durbin's as my research suggests mitt romney is the first presidential candidate american history with a swiss bank account so it once you try to hide it's becoming fairly obvious shouldn't you release his tax returns i mean gave them to where maybe you shouldn't give a john mccain mccain pick paling. but i think the fourteen million more fourteen million jobless americans really could care less about mitt romney's suppose it's was bank account or his tax returns they were laid off by mitt romney was only forty million people laid off well but there's some of them work that's not if you . you if you work for a company that was owned by bain capital in one thousand nine hundred nine and you still don't have a job i find that argument hard to believe i'll bet a third of the people who are unemployed right now have been laid off by people like me. and mitt romney are two very different things but let's go back to the tax return things problem manual was the one you tried to claim out last sunday that
11:17 pm
a lot of the reason why he wasn't chosen as the v.p. candidate for mccain's campaign was because of the twenty three pages of documents that they received and actually steve schmidt from the mccain campaign came out this week and said that that x. polluted wasn't the case the issue that they said was that it was actually his wealth mccain had been cited for having a certain amount of houses and they were concerned that mitt romney was going to look too wealthy and two of the candidates on the ticket would look bad yeah absolutely it wasn't a tax and the actual quote from john mccain was sarah palin was the better candidate and the other argument they make you might read. it later here's the problem you know no matter what happens if you release to nine he would still be skewered always to ridicule you as always because we think we know how rich he is i mean the guy's worth a third of a billion dollars or whatever marriage for mitt romney is we need to become a bad thing in this country to be rich why does that matter it's not being rich it's how you get there how do you get one hundred million dollars into a four hundred one k.
11:18 pm
when average people like you and me can at the maximum put thirty thousand dollars in your four hundred one k. and that requires all kinds of you know double backflips with your employer average person can only put six thousand dollars a year how do you do that how do you get a hundred million dollars or is it ok for barack obama to be a millionaire is that something that is if you're old fashion when you wrote a book. i mean seriously he had student loans when he was a senator he was still paying off his student loan ok it when he ran for president his book went from say having sold twenty or thirty thousand copies to selling two million copies but they handed mitt romney a third of a billion dollars and just said here you go to everyone will that be really what matters is where you felt as a result of this close what you're bankrupt. fire the employee move the jobs to your to asia he started staples try to buy something american and staples and those are great jobs or i think we should all be making nine dollars an hour it's not true that there's mitt romney ship jobs overseas and i think that there's been a lot of nonpartisan fact checkers who have said that again that he wasn't at bain
11:19 pm
when bain supposedly ship jobs overseas he was even working there during that time it's really not fair to say mitt romney said jobs overseas. shipping jobs overseas i don't see the problem with that anyways even if it's true i mean i don't know whether it's true or not but even so i mean there is not in the context out there a serious one at that that would suggest that it gauging in a comparative advantage trade is a bad thing comparative advantage is no tariffs i mean go back and read your david ricardo eight hundred seventy. the analogy of that off there are some of the original analogy was ok you go to you know colleges that are making milk in england as i recall grapes for for wine in france and and in scotland they were always goats and sheep or. help in the way too and it sure and let's all let's all interact with it all where a sweater drink milk and have good wine or eat cheese and a good one but what happens when two countries make the same thing then he made the
11:20 pm
point ricardo made the point that those countries have to decide whether they're going to protect their industries and we did george washington as to alexander hamilton by the seven hundred ninety one protecting it all you're taking a sword out running it right through the consumer soon as you do that yes you are you're removing competition prices skyrocket and sort of wages. well so i really didn't outsourcing it would be better to just give jobs to friends like president obama and green energy companies that are going to go into it and i think that's a better idea to talk about wages going on what their wages are it's all your cost everything's going up you're not getting any benefit from that i think i think we've got a flawed this one of the two visions for american education you mentioned schools earlier let's get back to this francesca today president obama unveiled a one billion dollars plan to increase american achievement in science technology and math by rewarding high quality teachers with salary bonuses and hiring more teachers to close the education gap between us and other countries on the other side republicans just released their vision for american education in the funding
11:21 pm
bill for the part of education the house of representatives republican slashed funding for the program to turn around low performing schools which actually was started by george w. bush and eliminated funding for president obama's top education program program the race to the top but they quadrupled funding for abstinence only education why is it that the republicans are against paying for science teachers and and in favor of pain for abstinence education which doesn't even work i don't get out of you know the solution every time i see this debated you know this is every couple years oh look at the test scores look at this look at the performance of these schools the solution let's throw more money at it and republicans democrats go back and forth and what are the well one eight but we do great schools but again we're not we're talking about a mythological period of time here i'm sorry really all sixty seventy s these were not a mythological time i lived through them those those schools were not going to be just blown up half the world and we're looking at and saying wow it's surprising that the u.s.
11:22 pm
education system is so good as the rest of the world is rebuilding from world war two shocker they've rebuilt you know the time you have to mergers in the world in terms of in terms of education they have finland and singapore culturally they have nothing in common physically they have nothing in common one is a big largely rural country the other is a city state and at every level the one thing that those two countries have in common is the dock. teachers make the same i think that we're totally skipping over the fact of what republicans want to do let's talk about when they were on the plan once that you know mitt romney wants to basically give you a tax credit for the amount of money that your child would otherwise receive for education so that you can go to any school you want to which is you know i was trying to grow anybody's here because you are telling your kids that obama so he wants to go to you know i was making a joke about him. to give you a tax credit so that you can send your child to any school that you like so that there's competition within the schools to help increase those schools an underfunded areas to compete better which would you know get better teachers in
11:23 pm
there get better educations for low income children it doesn't work out that way why does it work out that way i can tell you having written five books about education and i've been on the board of directors of a nonprofit school for twenty years and that i helped found there is no measurable difference between charter schools and public schools and when you look at one particular when you take the sample bias out of it because the public schools you know because of title one public schools have to educate every kid in charter schools don't when you take that sample bias out public schools always perform perform what is no washington is even suggesting a realistic plan to reform education in this country you know if the solution is always well we're going to bail out essentially what we believe is the problem by throwing more money after more money and i think that's one of the solution that has been worst singapore and finland it's working really really well we're nineteenth in the world they're one and two we were told most doctors and teachers the same amount which you know i was actually going to tell you it's a lot of army teachers going to countries to help us and as a certainly arguing that we have a part that republicans or democrats for that matter have
11:24 pm
a perfect plan i was merely arguing that that would be a better system you so that there are no measurable results we're going back to the d.c. opportunities scholarship program in d.c. kids have a graduation rate an average graduation rate of fifty five percent the kids who got those school vouchers have a graduation rate of ninety one percent let's look at florida florida tax credit plan. they've had wonderful results from that there's been several studies including one by northwestern that shows that they have a have had much better test scores than other performance rains based on children being able to go to the school that's right for them over the short term well and i'm not opposed to it at a certain level school choice but i think that it should be public school choice but but ok we can if we can agree to disagree before we get to a quick very quick question the republican logo when george bush became president they flipped the stars upside down the normal star is you know with the top with a point on the top it's the head arms legs you know from. the upside down star is
11:25 pm
the satan worshipers thing and the two horns of the goat the two ears the goat on the side the chinny chin chin on the bottom why did the republicans do this and why are the christian republicans freaked out about it i don't even know how to answer that question a serious question i ask it of every republican who comes on the program nobody has been able to tell me why the republican of the stars upside down oh really if you if you take a flag and you turn upside down you know the police will come in your house it's in distress. maybe they were trying to send a message if they have a leader that i don't want to stray if ever you find out why you know i think maybe if ever you find out let me know ok i doubt that next time you have me on the back or not you're going to hear is say. i have called the r. and c. they won't tell me. ok let's move actually be a good time for a quick quote for a lot of people are looking forward to the new batman movie coming out rush limbaugh's not want to here's what he had to say about. the villain in the dark knight rises is named bane b. a and e. what is the name of the venture capital firm that romney ran and around which
11:26 pm
there's now this make believe controversy they do you think that it is accidental that the name of the really vicious fire breathing for i'd whatever it is villain in this movie is named bane. actually bane be any the villain in batman was created way back in one thousand nine hundred three a year before romney first jumped into politics running for senate in massachusetts in ninety four but no conspiracy theories do crazy when it comes to rush limbaugh so do either of you to buy it i mean is it possible to batman's in the tank for obama i don't buy i don't buy that argument i'm not even going to pretend to to buy that argument absolutely not we'll agree on something jim and now you're going to have to apologize to the limbaugh you think anybody this agrees with them so look at ok it's absurd i mean. i mean trying to hide the stuff together obvious just
11:27 pm
keep politics from around and get people riled up. and i think that that's actually a good point that we're not having enough dialogue just like we i think we've tried to have tonight about real issues instead of this kind of distracting stuff adam franchesca thank you both for being just take it up. after the break a decade after the bush tax cuts went into effect it's clear that they did very little if anything to create prosperity for americans who were millionaires or billionaires so what would our economy look like today with out the bush tax cuts and what americans have been better off without the.
