in an exclusive interview with. explains what was behind a veto of the resolution on syria and why the conflict could spread beyond that country's borders. mr churkin russia's decision to veto this latest resolution has caused consternation and widespread criticism of moscow's stance is russia supporting the assad regime. of course not about what needs to be done in order to settle the crisis unfortunately the strategy of our western colleagues too seems to be to try to whip up tensions in and around syria at every opportunity and this time they took the occasion of the need to extend the mandate of the
6:32 am
monitoring mission in syria and attached a number of unacceptable clauses to their draft resolution so we needed to talk together was china unacceptable draft to allow kofi annan more space to work on the document which was adopted the. foreign minister of a number of countries of the so-called action group which is that which calls for setting up a transitional national body and that requires of course dialogue between various parties so in this context to introduce a resolution which would only entailed pressure and almost inevitable sanctions on the syrian government did not look like a good idea to us at all and there were. blocked a decision which in our view was gone the but counterproductive so moscow not supporting the assad regime but america britain and france say that russia has failed the syrian people today how how do you react to that. well you know.
6:33 am
there are quite good and bad and loud propaganda i think what they have been doing in criticizing russia and china and some sometimes quite stridently today it was the british and the french. who went out of their way unfortunately a pile of all sorts of false false who. on the foreign policies of russia and china they should focus more. on the new do. unfortunately they haven't done anything at all in order to set them train a productive positive process in syria instead they have been working. with the so-called friends of syria in fact the. this is a group of countries who are enemies of the syrian government i wouldn't call them enemies of the syrian people but certainly those who want to topple the syrian government this regarding the consequences which are extremely tragic which such
6:34 am
policy. entails because the government or president our side it's not simply one individual or a group of individuals they represent of course a certain segment of the of the syrian population a certain power structure which has existed there for decades so to break it would cause and is causing trying to break that considerable trouble and bloodshed to reform and through dialogue this would be much more reasonable a line of action and this is what russia has been advocated dialogue hasn't achieved anything so far is that now an overwhelming global sentence is something has to be done to stop the killing of innocent people and what about intervention on humanitarian grounds is not acceptable to moscow moscow is very concerned about chapter seven i don't want to get into technical to see it chapter seven leading to perhaps military intervention but what about some form of intervention to stop the killing. well in
6:35 am
a way the money group which. is a way of of a sort of political intervention in trying to a practical intervention and trying to deter while and fortunately it hasn't happened it hasn't been successful i mean you said the dialogue has not achieved anything the problem is that the dialogue has not started yet. position groups refuse to enter into dialogue with the with the syrian government which says it is prepared for the world they should try that all four of the syrian government to enter into dialogue this is a major makes a missing link a major impediment in the way of coffee and an activity you know humanitarian intervention unfortunately it only sounds humane but the fact of the matter is that any military intervention for whatever reason is inevitably going to cause more bloodshed bloodshed and you know we know that those greatest humanists in the world
6:36 am
u.s. and u.k. intervened in iraq for instance citing all sorts of noble protects in that particular case nonexistent weapons of mass destruction what of course there is a one hundred fifty fifty thousand civilian deaths alone to say nothing of you know millions of refugees displaced persons and the whole dislocation in the country so don't be duped by committee in a few million communitarian rhetoric there is much more geopolitics in their policy in syria than of humanism and unfortunately the practical consequences of the of their policy is that that because flicked and bloodshed is not abating you mention geopolitics and understand it you mention the fact that what's happening in syria is actually a name don't what's going to happen in iran eventually can you explain that that iran is the eventual goal i don't know why. i did refer to iran but in a slightly different context i wouldn't rule out that then they will move or move on to iran but i was not referring to that i was in my remarks of the stakeout
6:37 am
earlier today in the united nations i was referring to their clear interest and this is a major motivation of the policy in their effort to topple president assad in curbing iranian influence. in the middle east in that region and it's also a major motivation of the. other middle eastern the fighters for democracy saudi arabi and qatar who are concerned about what they see iranian interests of course and while he and i was well they claim that the she approaches there is a sort of iranian sponsored even though some observers including your colleagues journalists who have experienced on the ground believe that it happens to be genuine protest. against a system which is not entirely democratic to put it mildly so clear a geo political dimension is there in the policies of a number of countries who are extremely aggressive these are the syria and it is
6:38 am
nothing to do with the interests of the syrian people because again what the sealskin who need is to find yes can i ask you though what is the worry for moscow will these geo political implications which explains clearly why it is more you know we are not it well not in what way could moscow be affected will not what are the about. well we're not what are the geopolitical implications of sort of that particular saying even though we believe that the greater confrontation with iran is hurting. is unnecessary and of course we are directly involved in the first two are resolved peacefully the problem of the iranian nuclear program and the. growing tension between iran and the west and. it is it is not it's not it's not helpful our concern is that this city and people have to suffer the consequences of
6:39 am
this geopolitical geopolitical struggle and our concern is that the focus of everybody's policy must be for the benefit of the syrian people and the only way they can put an end to this tragic conflict is to get to the negotiating table and the ground there is a document which you which was a consensus document adopted by the group of action foreign ministers in geneva two and a half weeks ago which says that at transitional national border needs to set up to be set up and it cannot be set out by by sanctions it cannot be set up by more pressure on just one side of the syrian government which is claiming that it is ready for the locus there's a need that it's representative for such a dialogue but so far the interest from the opposition is not there and we see extreme opposition groups are in the position groups resorting to more and more violence and even terrorist attacks like the one we saw yesterday in the masters this is not to say. the syrian government has not exhorter it has not resorted
6:40 am
to excessive violence of the times or made very serious mistakes and blunders over the months but the time to end that unless we wanted to continue for years is to enter into dialogue. russia has really stuck by its principles of intervention is it not there. in danger of being isolated bearing in mind the continual vetoing of the sanctions in the un security council and of course the supplying of military hardware to syria all the most of course says that this is not being used against civilians but this what's it do for russia's reputation and indeed its relations after this crisis is over. well we'll see we'll see i think doing the right thing and not simply following somebody is a. catastrophic policy is something which makes makes me proud is something which eventually will be borne out of the right course of action on the
6:41 am
right policy under these very difficult circumstances and. if i'm not mistaken the united states has cost sixty vetoes on the palestinian issue alone so why don't you. question my american colleagues about the impact of the image of the united states in the middle east of the continuous mito sometimes even between their own presidential and secretary of state public statements so that all is a part of the u.n. charter there is nothing wrong about casting it when you feel the need to do so can we talk about what happens next now no agreement in the u.n. security council but russia has said that it would like to see an extension of the u.n. observer mission to syria but at the moment is a visible impact so far what is the point in keeping the mission alive when so far it's failed. what do what would be the point of the other parts i would think that
6:42 am
at least we have a more chance to get objective information if it's there or if the situation we have to improve there will be on the ground already so they will be able to participate more actively in in the political process and also the in dealing with a humanitarian situation so pulling the model. is going to entail negative consequences and one to avoid that unfortunately now here on we seem to be undergoing another sort of little diplomatic battle now we're going to have a discussion of making it the technical role without loading it with political conditions and implications thank you very much indeed we will leave it there vitaly churkin we really appreciate your show and russian ambassador to the u.n. thank you very much indeed for explaining the situation during this crisis now thank you.

little bit. now to the olympics and team usa appear to be in good form as they prepare to defend their basketball title they took on great britain in a warm up match on thursday securing a comfortable one hundred nineteen seventy eight victory some the game's biggest stars were on show at manchester evening news arena on dazzling hundred ability to create their first basket as kevin durant took it along the baseline for a dunk i like his guard kobe bryant then put the visitors eleven six head i later in the first quarter of the world a great britain back within touching distance as his layout made it fifteen points to twelve. there's the much more on the gold medal winners from beijing four years ago showed their quality they stunk from the bron james gave them a twenty nine. one hundred nineteen seventy eight the final score.
6:52 am
this is a really good night for basketball in great britain. standing i think great britain has a chance you know to do to do some damage in the olympics and men's basketball. i think they're tough on their wall coach them and was a great player and what he's done for his country and his commitment to this program is really sensational meanwhile rafael nadal won't be defending his olympic title the spanish tennis star was due to be the flag bearer for his country in london the world number three one gold in beijing four years ago and he won't be defending his title this summer because of fitness a she's a doll stating he was not in condition to compete the twenty six year old who hasn't played since losing the second round of wimbledon to the then one hundredth ranked. elsewhere let's continue all of those russian athletes best place to bring home some silverware athletics has long provided a stream of success for both the u.s.s.r.

i'm russia at the games but how is the current crop shaping up michael crunch enco reports. with forty seven sets of medals on offer from athletics disciplines at the london olympics it's no wonder russia is counting on the applet eckstein for success they'll be heading to london with one hundred nine strong team three more than in beijing four years ago and they'll be accompanied by forty nine coaches and staff chances today explain to you the teeth of chances and approximately sixty. takes this especially in the wins so to remembrance rising star because arena also be heading to london after some truly surprising results. and despite being modest to remain is as excited as anyone heading to their first olympics minister but and of course i'm thinking about it i'm also still very young and my opponents will all be so mature and experienced but i'll be trying my best
6:54 am
but i think many eyes will be on the four by one hundred meter and four by four hundred meter relay races russia managed to win gold and silver respectively in these two events back in two thousand and eight and despite the added pressure some are still just happy to be a part of the person at the it's a celebration for any athlete to be a part of history a part of the olympics and to return from it with a medal well that's probably what not just any athlete would wish for but any person but. the clerics president was however keen to point out that there were other events russia would have a good chance in. like for before college made his race stronger and stronger winds and. chemistry and destroying you can good chances in jumping events especially high hopes will lie mainly on recently crowned russian high jump champion irina garvey of she didn't want to jinx herself prior to the games but
