12:00 pm
syria enters the muslim holy month of ramadan violent government forces and rebel fighters battle on every corner of the war torn country. spain is gearing up for more angry protests just days after nationwide marches descended into clashes that left dozens injured. trigger happy tourism a new attraction for visitors to israel sparks fears of promoting a negative perception of the country. live from our new center here in the russian capital this is r.t. with the twenty four hours a day fierce fighting between the syrian military and rebels continues to rage for
12:01 pm
the second day in syria's northern economic aleppo the violence shows no sign of declining a day after the u.n. security council unanimously voted to extend its observer mission to the country for a final thirty day period clashes are continuing to break out in damascus after rebel forces have been mostly driven out of the syrian capital by assad's army on friday reports suggest the last few days of fighting have been the bloodiest since the conflict began on a voyage to report the holy spirit of ramadan will in no way reconcile the enemy's . it's a call for prayer that at times sounds like a mother's wail and at others like a sinister cry in a horror movie plumes of smoke are now competing with minarets on the damascus skyline and few expect things to get any better in the coming months saturday is the first day of ramadan for many syrian muslims but not for all their fear which is that the rebels that seem to disagree on just about everything also differ on
12:02 pm
the holy month is supposed to begin the start of ramadan is determined by the side of the new moon which varies from country to country to the weather so in syria as well as in iran or amman it fell on saturday the rebels do decided to start fasting a day earlier in line with political allies like saudi arabia and turkey mixing religion and politics is becoming increasingly common in this seventeen month long struggle. we have something like. if you have to fly we don't care about. die because when we die we will go through a law to heaven. and that comforts the sash neighborhood of damascus the mosque still bears the scars of clashes between the rebels and the army local men tell us about atrocities committed by the troops and how their faith.
12:03 pm
and. become part against them even in ramadan you know. we. are with god and god with. healing in the name of god is nothing new of course and in syrian folks calls there are indeed very few atheists. and while the enemies are praying to the same god they also seem to agree on at least one other thing that the holy month is unlikely to bring any a response. to violence the holy month of ramadan is it time for frantic shopping in time for sunset when muslims break their fast but here in what used to be an upscale residential area close to central damascus you can barely find i think shop open most of them have been ravaged or destroyed like this one those that stayed intact
12:04 pm
a close and actually there's absolutely no short burst here in the only people that we've met so far on the army troops twenty five year old is a conscript who joined the army fresh out of university a year and a half ago while islam exam active duty soldiers from the dawn to dusk fasting. he and the majority of other troops in his unit will do it anyway. it's summer it's heart and we are freezing creek challenge from these terrorists is on our side it gives us strength for as long as it takes over yet he recognizes that with the advent of from a done their efforts to stand what they call this threat of terrorism is likely to phase more challenges not only mosques have been used by the militarized the position for recruitment large crowds heading to prey make it easier for the rebels to infiltrate new areas. the reason why it's so hard to capture all these
12:05 pm
terrorists is because they can easily disguised themselves as civilians when we conduct our operations we have to let civilians and terrorists choose to move around while ramadan calls for charity and compassion syrian man observing it routinely profess right in this to die for their cause but for the war to stop what they need is to be willing to live for it it's not a boycott artsy damascus syria. washington says it's seeking to put even more pressure on damascus while providing additional support to the rebels political analyst ivan eland thinks the u.s. is trying to bring down the any indirect means while the syrian president is prepared to go down fighting the united states would like russia to put pressure on assad to leave peacefully but i think it's very obvious that assad probably won't do that and i think that he's seen what happened in other countries when the
12:06 pm
president stepped down mubarak you know that sort of thing and so i think he has no incentive to give up and to try to leave the country his back is to the wall and he's probably going to fight it out we don't know exactly what the united states is doing and often times when the united states says it's giving non-lethal i these are combat multipliers communications etc so they don't kill people directly but the indirect effect is to make their opposition more effective there are other arabic countries in turkey i think are helping out this side opponents and therefore the u.s. hands are clean but i think definitely there's probably some covert stuff going on in the united states says no the government says no but most assuredly if we go by past history there probably is something going on there. well i spoke exclusively with russia's envoy to the un vitaly churkin who explained moscow's position on these syrian conflict and you can watch the full interview here on r.t.

12:08 pm
a week now after prime minister of oil announced an additional sixty five billion euros in cutbacks the cuts are being implemented in return for a massive bailout for the battered spanish banking system on thursday over a million outraged citizens marched across the country to protest later turned violent police firing tear gas and rubber bullets before more let's not talk live with gail she's a labor market specialist at business school in madrid people are once again on the streets there calling the recently approved cutbacks robbery but does a government really have any other options. really. you know if they did not have their commitments to europe and if they were not in the euro specially you probably see different policies here. stimulus trying to get this economy but they really have no choice this time the unemployment level in spain as possible twenty four percent in is the highest in europe you're a labor market specialist what can be done about about it considering this dreadful
12:09 pm
current economic state there. well it's probably going to go nowhere man up right now has done a labor market reform and it was a very grave reform it was passed in the beginning of this year and it's something they put in after forty years so they've done it but it's going to take a little bit of time for it to take effect because what they've essentially what they've done is reduce the cost of firing workers so at the present time companies are laying off workers so until we get some economic growth here it's only going to go up and start to come by the end twenty five percent how do you get economic growth you talked earlier about fiscal stimulus and many are talking about growth rather austerity but how do you get growth when the country's in debt. well you know you can only get growth from your consumers growing your economy your government grow your economy your investors are three of those in spain have stepped up. all of those elements of the economy extremely so the only place you
12:10 pm
can get any growth right now is. export. growth and you do see the economies working very very hard on growing the export surplus in certain sectors so you know there's there's some change going on but that's not going to be enough to give the economy growth here and thing of shrinking you talk about consumers can actually grow an economy why doesn't the government then give the people the money and not the banks therefore if they gave the people the money that will increase tax revenues wouldn't it increase employment that's right and why do we do this over and over you know of the bank bailout. i think we have two things go and you're in the middle of a crisis and you're terrified that you're going to have another lehman moment or something like that and at the same time sitting in special does it holds all of our liquidity so if it goes down it takes our money with it so that you're right we do this over a number don't we the banks rather than bail out people. and that is happening
12:11 pm
and that's why people are so angry about it how long can all this last politically obviously require under a lot of pressure there we see other european countries now under a lot of political and civil pressure just how long can all this go on. well i think you know if you look at the spaniards they're very peaceful. people a year ago two years ago were saying how one can spin put up with this and i think the answer is. they understand. it is indeed too much basically private debt and they have to get out of it they understand it in the boom years were and sustainable and so they vote for why we had an absolute majority for a high and they were really to put up with the asiri but i think the frustration now is number one on some of the promises he made and broken and he had no choice but to break them but it's very frustrating and the second thing is they're becoming frustrated with europe spain has been
12:12 pm
a very pro european country and now they're starting to feel that we're doing everything you ask of us in the markets continue to turn against us and you're not helping us and so i think things will quiet down in markets because everyone believes. you know it's interesting as you're saying that the spanish people are peaceful by nature things might quite done in organs but we look at greece we've seen a lot of violent protests there we're actually seeing what more desperation more violence now in the streets of spain do you think actually it could get worse off to organise and come the autumn come come the winter you know i think if the opposition party kind of eggs people on you could see that happening very fast and there's every sign that the socialists will make political hay out of this even though they left the country. so you think you know they're out there and i think yeah we could see a lot of activity in i don't know but i think it's probably likely and also a lot of people leaving spain to try and get jobs and opportunities elsewhere but
12:13 pm
that can't be easy because the neighbors to spain are also in trouble too so what you've got people obviously people at the business school what is the feeling amongst them what's the morale like what do they feel about the immediate future the next generation now of the spanish for the immediate future you know they're very frustrated young people are you know there are more educated than any generation before that in spain actually put a lot more into higher education in the average o.e.c.d. country. and the they have these expectation. really the economy was growing strongly and they had planned to go you don't get the architect. so there you go and i think people are taking it relatively well you know it's somewhat discouraging but some of them are going to germany some are going to france but if you're a latin america i think you resigned to it probably they'll come back because. with their country and in some ways you look at that see it's not so bad because
12:14 pm
he's really like to stay at home next door and their parents were in their parents' house are going to go abroad they will protect the language that it's an experience a time back in their own really rich country so hopefully you know three years from now or so spain will be a different place and place for these young people but right now. it's a difficult scenario well and a note of stoicism and a touch of optimism girl thank you very much and if your thoughts go out of labor market specialist and are you business school in the very heart of it all there in madrid thank you and you're. welcome of the program here in our in the line of fire. it is no coincidence but you are beginning to see more and more of these attacks inside israel as well as in the west bank find out why new tourist attraction has triggered controversy
12:15 pm
in israel. that still to come but first thousands of anti regime protesters clashed with riot police in the capital of bahrain on friday the demonstrations against the ruling royal family began last february and i have led to over fifty deaths and scores of arrests the government has been attempting to suppress the opposition with program food and protest band earlier this month one of those cover elder former lecturer at the university of bahrain believes it's in the u.s. interest to empower the oppressive regime. the people have been pushing for democracy for many years now a thorough sovereignty in the country and the khalifa or the drive on the progress . or product ruling family ruling family now for two hundred twenty nine years lives in luxury they live lives that are so totally devoid from any type of reality from any type of connection with the average citizen whenever the

people rise up and protest that they have in the past year and a half they go after them they kill them they torture them they beat them because they broke no allowance for freedom of speech freedom of association freedom of belief the people who are determined they will continue to protest because the regime is so embattled and so in feeble and we can scared they have decided to ban all protests and the bill regime is in prison jake mahfood head of the amal little society is in prison so the regime has been trying to shut down the pro-democracy protests there is a man who dragged only an enterprise under way in bahrain against the people of bahrain and that is what the world of foreign about primarily because of the u.s. fifth fleet there and the fleet is a pivot point allows the u.s.

the reason for such concern lies in the latest discovery by scientists that bluefin tuna caught off the california coast contain a radioactive isotopes brought over from the waters of japan it's led many to believe the scale of disaster was far greater than talking as authorities have ever admit it lost here is devastating earthquake and tsunami not only killed thousands but also knocked out the fukushima nuclear plant spilling uncontrolled amounts of freddie ation into the atmosphere so well and see the japanese government has been accused in the past of failing to provide full information about the incident and of downplaying the dangers the fact that the reactors were down which was known to go by the government literally within days of the incident taking place and was not actually reported in the media for months afterwards which is almost unthinkable the news that my greater you fish may now be bringing that radioactivity across the
