are we taking a break but we'll be right back. culture is that so much i'm afraid we're going to make a lot of people in your area when i look at is an end game inside these on the cheap with the u.s. and regional how i see the piece of work diplomacy and the warning from damascus. you know how sometimes you see a story and it seems so for lengthly you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else and you hear or see some other part of it and realized everything you thought you knew you don't know i'm tom harkin welcome to the big picture.
10:31 pm
more news today violence is once again flared up. these are the images the world has been seeing from the streets of canada. giant corporations rule the day. of the.
10:32 pm
hi guys it's time for you said it i read it right take time to respond to my brilliant and it gauging viewer comments from facebook twitter and you tube because we've got some to say i listen to our first comment tonight comes from tim davis who had this to say on facebook about our mainstream is the economic debate in the us is a sham he said sorry lona but i think this debate is real the consensus of economists have brought us to where we are today they are no more to be trusted and the politicians are now i'm totally with you just because most economists agree on something does not necessarily mean that it's true or that it's good policy and the financial crash is a wonderful example of that although of course there are those who are trying to sound the alarms for years before my point yesterday is that the debate that happens in congress above all is not real because above all their interests lie in
10:33 pm
getting reelected getting more campaign cash furthering the interests of their donors congress really cared about the economy we'd see a jobs bill we'd see wall street be held accountable that's the common sense stuff that just doesn't have the same emotional points that say a debate over taxes just put the most economists would also agree on now our next comment comes from john jeremiah smith who also posted on facebook and he commented on our heaviest corpus get mo interview saying hey this corpus is dead throughout since it becomes moot once and da is invoked indefinite detention without charges removes the necessity for the cops to find a vias corpus evidence with a combination of the patriot act and the n.d.a. you have no constitutional freedoms whatsoever america is over it's bit over since g.w. be entered office now i don't know if i'd go so far as saying that america is over it's a little dramatic but we are definitely losing sight of our constitution of the protections of the founding fathers meant to put in it one time obeys as one example but you noted many others out there with n.d.a.
10:34 pm
the patriot act. i think credibly to serve it specially because the president and congress and the courts are all guilty of playing a role here but guantanamo so important because it's been ignored for so long as most americans it's out of sight out of mind because it's not happening to their own people i guess you could say right to americans but by not paying attention a lot of people missed the warning price and look are we are now and then finally the devil breaker commented on our anaheim mainstream miss on monday and he said on you tube thank you lona for showing that me this i did not come across the story over the weekend i did not see this anaheim story on any local or nationwide news channels i can always count on you for giving every incident its fair share of coverage now as we showed today the top of our show the mainstream media has finally caught on to the story but there's still a whole lot out there that's missing so we're happy that we can provide this story to you first and thank you for watching. now these days unfortunately we're used to
10:35 pm
our rights being under assault and the justification behind it so is a good large dose of fear mongering and we've seen some really troubling developments recently the make the discussion more that says harry than ever we can because so see it's have been harassed occupy supporters have been targeted anti-war activists have been raided anybody who is much is talked to anybody related with an extremist group can be charged with material support for terrorism make no mistake about it right the first amendment the bill of rights your rights are under attack and the indefinite detention provision of the n.d.a. when you add that to the mix as well as the approval of domestic drones as well as the n.s.a.'s massive hub in utah just to name a few things well dissenting voices have every reason to question surveillance but there are a few members of congress out there who don't always parrot the hawkish talking points there are a few who actually remember that little thing called the constitution doesn't mean they're perfect but they are rare and so today we decided that we should point out the efforts of those who deserve it so we here at the lower show we put together
10:36 pm
our own list for you people like senator ron wyden it a member of the select committee on intelligence today wyden spoke at the cato institute about the foreign intelligence surveillance act or finds that and he expressed concerns that surveillance of foreigners could lead to unconstitutional activities here at home. but if the government wants to search through all of the communications that if you have collected under section seventy two in an effort to find the communications of a particular american citizen there is no requirement to get a warrant to do that i don't believe the law to allow this and i think the back door searches loophole ought to be closed and i'm going to do everything i. america minims reauthorization this fall to close that loophole. wide isn't working on surveillance oversight. for some time last week he convinced the office of the director of national intelligence to allow him to discuss privacy concerns
10:37 pm
more openly specifically he can now openly say that on at least one occasion the foreign intelligence surveillance court held that some collection carried out was unreasonable under the fourth amendment at least one could that be the understatement of the month of the year of the decade now either way this revelation reflects series of effort on widens part imagine that write a senator actually trying to oversee parts of the national security state that he was assigned to oversee it's consistent with his other tireless efforts out there to his threat to filibuster sopa before became before it became extremely unpopular his calling cispa a false choice between privacy and security his pointing out of the t p p could contain unpopular internet regulations but now let's move on to someone else shall we just yesterday house homeland security committee member ted poe introduced a bill that would force drone operators to obtain a warrant before conducting surveillance here's what he had to say. yes mr speaker
10:38 pm
the drones are coming who will operate these drones and what will be their mission congress has the legal obligation to ensure that the fourth amendment rights of private citizens are protected in this new drone world. and i couldn't agree more it's not a technology we shouldn't be used but with the f.a.a. forced to outline rules for domestic drone use by twenty fifteen we really need some safeguards but tens of thousands of drones expected to watch us from above in just a few years i think it's a pretty solid idea also a thought shared by some of those colleagues as we told you a few weeks ago senator rand paul and congressman austin scott introduced similar bills last month and beyond paul and wyden in the senate can count on a very small number of civil libertarians amongst its ranks colorado's mark udall is one example he joined wyden on other surveillance related increase including one that led to an infamous response from the office of the director of national intelligence and inspector general said the oversight would violate the privacy of
10:39 pm
americans i know is pretty confused by that too we cover the story and then of course the two expressed other privacy concerns like section two fifteen of the patriot act a provision that allows faiza courts to obtain almost any kind of record from americans without a warrant and speaking of warrants rand paul has been a fierce opponent of the patriot act he's pointed out that the wide that there are wide gaps in the fourth amendment where anybody can be treated as a criminal by the feds. it gives you the right to say the government must have probable cause there must be at least some suspicion that you are committing a crime before they come into your house or before they go into your records where every your records are. now whether that be nice if the presumption of innocence was the rule and not the exception in the post nine eleven era so maybe it will be a get as concerned as spreading the on the more commonly known privacy advocates in
10:40 pm
the senate for now just last week in the senate judiciary committee mike lee dick durbin chris coons they all tried but they failed to advance an amendment limiting government snooping it would have forced intelligence services to actually get a warrant before spying on americans communications something if they don't have to do under the act as it stands now that i might have failed but it seems like the indignation is ground and it is a limited of course to the senate it's common knowledge that ron paul is a strong defender of privacy dentist who senate has also come out hard against the patriot act and next year when neither one will be congressman there will be others we already mentioned austin scott ted poe on there isn't the time to mention every single person out there that has at one point expressed privacy concerns there is also a bipartisan caucus is now dedicated entirely to the issue co-chaired by republican joe barton and a democrat ed markey contains tea partiers and progressives and has twenty four members and just last week it's democratic members called for hearing on cell phone tracking and yesterday they sent a letter to data mining companies asking about their practices and expressing
10:41 pm
concerns about consumer privacy so it seems that while civil libertarians have to fight like mad to keep uncle sam out of your business there are at least some people on the hill that are at times holding true to their word to uphold the constitution and like i said even then it's not always the case but maybe if we let them know that we're noticing they'll do more and your privacy and the bill of rights will still have a fighting chance. our guys it's time for our last break of the evening but when we come back to find out which senator doubled down on his usual fear mongering he went to night school some awards and then we'll have another dose of happy hour thank you laura lister and jim hansen be doing next. those stores. were going to load. my.
10:42 pm
log you. choose your. take your stuff. to. make your statement. sometimes you see a story. that
10:43 pm
10:44 pm
he's back. in two thousand and twelve to get past now all internet kill switch joe he's pushed for some draconian tech policies in the bads but his previous upwards have thankfully been shot down even presented a previous form of the cyber security act that would have required homeland security to create mandatory security standards for cyber infrastructure but there
10:45 pm
are some republicans out there the argue that mandates would hurt private companies who actually cooperate with the government on cybersecurity so that connecticut senator he went back to the drawing board now in this new version a national cyber security council would work with industry groups to create voluntary standards to prevent cyber attacks and we were makes it clear that he wants this to be his legacy before he retires at the end of his legislative session so in a press conference we were going to once again explain why he thinks we need these protections in place and why it has to happen now but think it was less of an explanation and one of an opportunity to fear monger. we did not want to lose the chance to pass cyber security legislation this year that could prevent or it secretary panetta warned about which is cyber nine eleven or nine eleven pearl harbor before it actually happens. yeah that's right the senator cited defense secretary leon panetta is warning of
10:46 pm
a nine eleven pearl harbor one problem they are an e-mail about is a panetta never really said that turns out that a former cia officer hinted at it at one point and panetta testified last year at the next pearl harbor could quite possibly be in the form of a cyber attack a strong likelihood that the next pearl harbor that we confront could very well be a cyber attack this is a real possibility. now look i understand leon panetta cyber security should be a top concern of ours we should realize that a sophisticated cyber attack could do some serious damage but with that being said give lawmakers a poetic license to fear monger and i think the fear mongering is a perfect way to label lieberman's horrific description of a nine eleven pearl harbor not only to combine some truly sad and horrific moments in american history all the put his own interests but how they even think up this concoction of tragedies makes me wonder what other hypothetical doomsday scenarios he just might come up with just to make sure that some type of cybersecurity bill
10:47 pm
gets signed before he hangs up his hat maybe go back a hundred years took a heartstrings of americans and predicts titanic situation or if you think that's too far in the past maybe i'll go the nuclear route for his due date scare tactics if cybersecurity legislation needs to be pushed again would lieberman dare suggest a cure noble hiroshima disaster now i'm not trying to make light of these events become on guys this fear mongering is completely out of hand this is how bad legislation gets passed and this is how rights get trampled on when you put fear and panic into the mix you think you would have learned that by now after the last ten years believe it sees that clock ticking so he decides to give his efforts a little nudge even if it means painting a really scary hyperbolic picture in your mind so maybe maybe just maybe he's ready to join a cybersecurity lobbying group out there i don't know but we're taking it to the extremes just to make sure that he could live up to his legacy we're going to give senator joe lieberman tonight's tool time award.
10:48 pm
our guys it's time for happy hour and joining me this evening lauren lyster host of the capital account here on r t and jim hansen retired special operations master sergeant and military blogger of black live dot net thanks for joining. you know we want to rethink our name now oh i think you're laughing at me ok. john ever not all about me. let me move down by you kind of can i mean this is apparently this came from one of romney's advisers and just just take a listen. romney advisor told the daily telegraph that romney will strengthen the special relationship between the u.s. and britain because of a shared anglo-saxon heritage that president obama does not understand.
10:49 pm
shared anglo-saxon heritage that apparently obama doesn't understand and i think that's fair i'm still roma doesn't understand why you know obama is there so you know going to understand especially at first he gave back chills bust right after he moves in the white house like you guys why do. you keep the queen an i pod full of obama speeches he gave the british prime minister a set of d.v.d.'s you guys half blind and they were two days in a way where you can give your own i mean it's britain that's good no means you're lying on that you're not relying on racial slurs which are more just didn't like the fact interesting way to most of us in the misquote who said do we know who said no they don't have a name they won't give up a name this is an anonymous article that if you know you really want to find anything and they don't want anyone knowing you saying what is specially if it's a quote that they don't like. we're going to trust. we don't know to say that some romney advisor he won't name said anglo-saxon and all this sort of racism.
10:50 pm
obama hates britain mind. he was a obama needs you did a really good job and everything around i think means that you know me i didn't hire you to twist statements around for him to see what i thought about it as if i mean now you will send the cash that you will or i just love the goodness but situation is still a little too early to like mitt romney i do think that it did give him comes into i am going to read a bunch. the brits are our best friend the only real friends we have in the world are the brits are. coping ok remember comment on their own but i was really really left to hear you say that they're not a real threat this is a really bright idea you left. me with the. this is how this game works your honor all. this while we don't have a clip for it but it actually happened today ron paul had an audit the fed bill and
10:51 pm
it actually passed overwhelmingly in the house three hundred twenty seven yes votes and only ninety eight no votes in comparison and i actually had two hundred seventy four co-sponsors which is kind of crazy it's good. opposes the bill obviously the way it obviously but this is a good move i'm going to be doing his taxes. on those who spoke evil of to me directly advising tax would be doing it so that would even be worth it if the bill passed and have the house was right when it actually happens next well it's supposed to run into problems in the senate for reasons that i wanted you. know where it's going to go nowhere but i think it's a good move i mean i think it just does show some progress i mean ron paul made a really good point this week some governors on the hill oh gosh i'm going to tell you and i said ok ok i know i know the guy i know was never said i agree with lauren list. i don't think i've told all to often agree with loyalist you say that all the time just not on here. anyway anyway to me gunner was on the hill and
10:52 pm
he you know everybody everybody's best off because if you don't you don't want to be ok. anyway i make my serious knowing sometime later what to me say about how i would have been stopped because he didn't tell congress that he knew about manipulation back in two thousand acres the new york fed found out from someone from barclays and if there was audits of the fed in the way that ron paul wanted well hey maybe everybody would know about this whole economic team in jail yeah. i think you're going to have a team the whole point is the fed should have a little transparency. with the loner and lauren. ari so they put out. the hill with this list every single year of the fifty most beautiful people on capitol hill. and well i mean here's a little clip of somebody talking about it's like our number one guy his name is
10:53 pm
max angling he's actually staffer for the house administration committee ok we're going to we're going to do you very is he's originally from chicago and i love the story of how he was discovered he was a server at t.g.i. friday's and someone associated with the modeling industry was at t.g.i. friday's saw this guy and hired him. i got to admit the guy that was number one is pretty hot but then like it really starts to just go downhill pretty quick i was just so we're clear fifty one well it just gets we are going to like michele bachmann i. don't know. michele bachmann you know i think that michelle johnson. with this picture particularly really creepy i actually think that she like. looking woman but here she just looks like stiffler isn't she did you know i always got always thought that michele bachmann was good looking and i thought that was a problem because you're able to say a lot of really messed up things and get away with it more i think if you're pretty
10:54 pm
i agree completely lauren along. so you. are a lot of guys like i said number one guy super hot really big. and then you got to start realizing like oh this is why people say that d.c. is hollywood for ugly people when you start going through the rest of the fifty people that i think we've got to bring it down to like ten personally i think there are in general and there are there are judges of beauty than just your model looks true. but then that's more difficult right here because on the hill everybody is crazy but the point of the very. best that can be ok so we talk about chick fil a star for a moment so they've been in the news a lot lately. the boston mayor this week actually said chick fil a doesn't belong in boston take a look. making it clear that when it comes to opposing gay marriage he and his
10:55 pm
company are guilty as charged according to the christian post cathy goes even further during an interview on the ken coleman show saying quote i pray god's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about. our backtracked first i messed that one up my bad. a clip about the president of the company statement who was there was always supported traditional marriage and so then the boston mayor said it was like going on a rant about it saying chick fil a doesn't belong in boston and he said something along the lines of you can't have a city in the business in boston that discriminates population and he even i don't have this little quote in front of me anymore but basically he was saying that if you want to apply for permits and things in the future that you're going to have a hard time and so that's where people start getting pissed because you know ok it's one thing for politicians to make their stance clear but then can you start denying private businesses are saying like you're you have
10:56 pm
a tough time with that with licensing on your phone now i think it's messed up i mean. well enough of them has a right to be a christian and be in line with his beliefs and say that out loud that doesn't stop him selling chicken burgers in boston. i agree that's head first of state power movement here and it does he discriminate against employees is there any connection to that or is that already that be just what i generally don't understand i don't know any of any discrimination against what is a problem you're entitled to your story and all views and then nothing to do with. yeah but we see these things all the time right like with j.c. penney and it came to like. going to something using the power of the state or your city government to oppress a business because you disagree with its owner. jerry did not see the ok seems very ordinary but if you want to talk about like racism and things like those you can't really do that anymore. because gay people is not anyone fede black people you see
10:57 pm
in heroes generally leave one. chicken over exactly though it's probably better for boston than i have chick fil a because nobody needs to get some why it's happening . you know a little. quick obviously. i want to say you are going to talk about how we all know this is funny. on how do you know. the joint restaurant venture is the best thing that's ever happened to the world ever ok. who's going to miss me. thanks for joining me tonight. and that's it for tonight's show thanks for tuning in and make sure that you come back tomorrow young turks and his fareed is going to be joining us here in d.c. studio and meantime don't forget to like the a lot of show a lot of facelift and forget to follow us on twitter and describe your youtube
