9:30 pm
well you prevent thousands of citizens from voting of course is the rain of the election strategy the only way republicans can win in november also five hundred days have passed since the fukushima nuclear crisis in japan began and the power plants and that nation are still facing many challenges is there any way to prevent more destruction of the stricken nuclear plant or is the worst yet to come for the people of japan and criminal banks on wall street are committing fraud without any fear of punishment and they're taking our economy down in the process is the time we said enough is enough to their criminal activities and thereby off of our democracy i'll explain in tonight's daily said. in screw news new numbers out show just how damaging pennsylvania's new voter suppression id law will be to our democracy according to the philadelphia city
9:31 pm
paper twenty percent of legal voters in that state do not have the kind of photo id required to vote in the new law and in the city of philadelphia alone a whopping forty three percent of the voting population will be ineligible to vote as a result of the law of course the majority of those will be vote barred from voting or minorities seniors students and low income americans people who generally vote for democrats now we know why republicans state speaker of the house mike ters i said this about the new voter suppression id law. voter id which is going to allow governor romney to win the state of pennsylvania done. he wasn't joking and neither are any number of republican state legislators around the country who have managed to get voter suppression ideal laws passed in their states in recent years so republican state legislators working to rig the election in pennsylvania and elsewhere here offer her take on this is dean abramson a delegate to the r. and c. dino welcome. hi thank you for having me tom thanks for joining us how
9:32 pm
serious is voter fraud in the state of pennsylvania. where voter fraud is serious in every state we've got dead people voting people voting twice we've got pets that are voting how many people have seriously you've had a you've had a pet show up in the polls in pennsylvania. that's correct who had it why are they not in jail. why don't really know who owned the cat and why they're not in jail they probably should be but voter fraud is something that is happening here and i think our country is too important to let voter fraud happen to as when identification is not to suppress anybody's vote forty three percent of the people you say that don't have correct idea i find that so hard to believe because you can't do anything today nothing without having
9:33 pm
a form of photo id you can't get on an airplane yet the euro up a lot of people who can't afford to get on an airplane do you know there are a lot of people you know i live here in washington d.c. i don't own a car if i have never had a car why bother getting a driver's license there's a lot of people who don't have access to those things you've got elderly people who are going to vote the social security medicare vote and you know they're no longer driving they have no need for i.d. you've got young people who are in college they they have no i know need for id at that point or they have college i.d. but that doesn't satisfy many of these these laws you said the voter fraud is a big problem last year in the united states there were thirty five people arrested and prosecuted for voter fraud thirty six people in the united states died from televisions falling on them last year i mean you you are suggesting that four hundred thirty five thousand people in the city of philadelphia should should lose their right to vote to prevent thirty five people nationwide from illegally voting are you seriously making that suggestion. what i suggest is that everyone everyone
9:34 pm
in this country should have proper id that is not a ridiculous thing to ask for. you say that sears don't have id and college students don't have id but i disagree with you there are state i.d.'s my son who's twenty has had an id since he was twelve years old and another thing so are you a so are you are you going to go back and say you know during the clinton ministration there was this suggestion that maybe we should have a national id because people were starting to get freaked out because all of these people are coming from south of the border as a result the reagan amnesty in eighty six in the ninety's they were coming into the united states and and we were seen you know the construction industry and the meat packing industry and others you know basically losing jobs to that workforce and so there was a call mostly from the unions for a national id card republicans all went ballistic they were hysterical what you want to turn to the nazi germany your papers please is that what you're suggesting
9:35 pm
. when i think is that every six months what i'm suggesting is that we send observers to foreign countries to make sure that their elections are held fair and that there's no fraud our country is too important for and our integrity is at stake for us to have those things going on in our own country then why should i have thirty five four hundred thirty thousand people in in one city told sorry you can't vote they haven't been told sorry you can't vote if they have proper identification which could merely be nothing more than a station you're going to say you're going to seriously eighty year old woman in a wheelchair who hasn't been out of her house in two years that she's got to get out of the d.m.v. . tom you're going to say to somebody who's wearing a minimum wage or will lose their job if they take a half a day off they've got to go spend the afternoon in line and by the way cough up
9:36 pm
a day's wages for that. there's got to be a good way where everyone can receive identification and i don't believe that any of those people that you're talking about don't have id i would like for someone to produce one of the just one person in this country that does not have a form of id how about this woman business asteroid in pennsylvania who's suing the state says she's ninety three years old and she was born with a midwife she's got no birth certificate she can't get idea in the state of pennsylvania ninety three years old two. to even up pain food stamps you have to have identification so one person bring one person then this is have identification and let me find out why this is apple why everyone in this country since have proper id ok yes let's let's let's go to a your papers please country d.n.a. bridges and thanks for being with us tonight. we need to vote issues this time not
9:37 pm
race not color of skin thank you you're welcome thanks for joining us it's time to fight for a federal right to vote in the united states and put an end to this partisan attack on democratic voters that the koch brothers alec organization is pushing nationwide . in other news five hundred days have now passed since the fukushima nuclear crisis in japan began and one thing is clear it's still an extremely dangerous situation japanese newspapers reporting the plant operators still face a number of hurdles before they can decommission the plant and officially close the book on the crisis and it could take decades one of those hurdles includes trying to determine why eight million back or els of radioactive cesium still continues to pour out of reactor number two every single hour and plant operators still have no clue how they're going to remove massive pools of highly radioactive spent fuel from the roofs of the reactors as the newspaper reports not only will that work be unprecedented but the work will also have to be done in an environment of high radiation levels oh and then there's the situation with reactor four which could
9:38 pm
collapse at any moment triggering a worldwide nuclear disaster worse than share noble for more on this let's turn over to karl grossman investigative reporter professor of journalism at the state university of new york and author of the book cover up what you are not supposed to know about nuclear power karl welcome to the program good evening term we're now five hundred days since the crisis began just how big of a mess is fukushima still. it's an ongoing disaster a catastrophe a catastrophe for the people and other life going to pan a catastrophe for people in other life all over the globe. the radiation is still streaming out of the. complex it's been going on for as you say five hundred days the consequences. we're talking about grave impacts i mentioned reactor number four this is
9:39 pm
a eight or ten story tall building and for some brilliant reason general electric decided to design this thing with the with the waste pond or pool in the roof and the building is listing and if that waste pool if that building goes over that waste pool hits the ground what will happen. the catastrophe will be exacerbated who knows what i mean to put a waste pool high up above ground unbelievable when in fact there are twenty three mac one general electric nuclear power plants reactors in the united states mirrors. what we haven't focused that's remarkable and if that if the radioactive waste in that pool if that were there for you to fall on the ground if that were to lose the water that is cooling and right now would it
9:40 pm
combust would explode would it to flush out of the ocean what you know what would the consequences of that be and how would they compare to for example chernobyl. i've seen projections that it would be many times in terms of radioactive impacts optional they would be an explosive situation those fuel rods in fact are made of something called zirconium i write about it in cover up. in the fifty's in the early sixty's the nuclear industry went to the county m is that metal that make the fuel rods out of the only other major industrial use of the colony and at that time the spec on a flash bulb has a colony and gets hot and it explodes. but we would have in that spent fuel pool if the water is totally lost there's a colony in cladding x. loading just sending all these radioactive poisons. and nothing's gotten out
9:41 pm
already but you'd have even more spreading through japan being taken by the wind being taken by the waters of the pacific ocean globally karl there are reports that . the government of japan and tepco are actually bringing people back into cities within a few miles of focus shaimaa this make any sense. absolutely not but as an independent commission of the japanese diet the japanese parliament declared just a few weeks ago what we have are captured regulators in japan frankly it's more than that you have a captured government a government captured by the the nuclear industry the nuclear establishment and a point i'd like to make which mainstream media has not touched in all these many months the coke and pepsi you have nuclear power worldwide stokley general electric and westinghouse eighty percent of nuclear power plants worldwide are manufactured
9:42 pm
or designed by either general electric or westinghouse what happened in two thousand and nine well a company called toshiba bought westinghouse and later in two thousand and nine a company called toci partnered with general electric and its nuclear division so now they the coke and pepsi of nuclear power worldwide are basically japanese brands a maze which i mean has it all the current sales intervals we're at we're out of time but i said amazing story thank you for sharing it with us thanks for being with us tonight it's a pleasure to lots of nuclear regulations in america regulators of severe pain attention. fifty feet. if you feed.

it's thursday time to get our geek on all across the globe little children are afraid of the dark so thinking they're doing the right thing parents put night lights in their children's rooms to help keep the monsters in the big bad bogeyman away like this guy keeps us up at night. but
9:45 pm
a new study is out and while it doesn't say whether or not there is actually a big scary monsters like back-i under little kids beds it does say that night lights may not be the best way to deal with a fear of them that's because the study finds that chronic exposure to even very dim light at night causes depression in mammals and may do the same in humans in the study ohio state university professors exposed siberian hamsters to typical light and darker day and night cycles for a month after the month with up was up half the hamsters stayed on that same day and night schedule for another month while the other half were exposed to dim light throughout the night time period for that month and the second month was up both sets of hamsters were given a sweet drink which answers usually love all hamsters of experience a normal day in light cycles still wanted to have that sweet drink they have to experience dim light during the night lost their preference for the sweet drink the study concluded that this was quote
9:46 pm
a sign they no longer get pleasure out of activities they once enjoyed a hallmark symptom of depression during the second part of the experiment they hamsters were timed and how long they could actively try to escape from a pool of water hamsters who were exposed to night lights stop trying to escape and just floated in the water ten times more readily than the hamsters who had experienced normal day and night cycles according to the study this was a sign of quote behavioral despair and quote after the tests an experiment were complete a team of researchers studied the brain tissue of the hamsters in the tissue of the hippocampus region the brain that plays a role in depression the researchers found that hamsters that got light at night had fewer nerve cell protrusions known as dendritic spines dendritic spines are the structures where brain cells communicate with each other a reduction in these dendritic spines according to the researchers is consistent with what we see in humans with major depression all of the symptoms of display
9:47 pm
depression in the hamsters including the changes in brain cells went away within two weeks of the hamsters returning to normal day and night light cycles with dark nights and no night lights. well the result of this experiment reveals a lot it's still too early to know the details of any possible link between nightline night time light and mood disorders like depression in humans but if nighttime light does in fact promote depression in humans it wouldn't be that big of a surprise previous studies have shown that there can be greater risks for health problems like cancer obesity and diabetes when light throws off our natural biological clocks our deal rhythms so what's the takeaway from all this well if you want to happy your child it might be a good idea to forgo the night lights and let them fight off the big bad scary monsters like that guy all on their own. just.

the good the bad of the very very philip endlessly oddly the good. hospitals in colorado three of the five hospitals were victims of the colorado shooting massacre being treated announced today that they will be limiting or eliminating the victims' hospital costs children's hospital colorado said it would use donations and its charity fun to cover the medical expenses of uninsured patients and waive the co-pays for those who do have insurance the other two hospitals the medical center of aurora and swedish medical center. or will limit or eliminate costs based on individual needs and it's i'm in the cause of health care and especially emergency medicine have gone through the roof it's great to see these hospitals looking out for their patients so the bottom the bad senator james inhofe inhofe sent a letter to the department of defense on tuesday asking why soldiers were allowed
9:49 pm
to march in uniform in san diego's pride parade in that letter he argues that it was a violation of the d.o.d. directive this is service members shall not march or ride in a partisan political parade. he then says he's concerned the president obama is forcing the administration's quote liberal social agenda on the military by promoting the homosexuals and quote currently senator inhofe is on aware of the fact that being gay is a personality characteristic and not a political trait there are gay republicans gay democrats this is just another attack on l g b t equality by the far right and the very very ugly missouri state representative john the payor just days after the tragedy in colorado the carrot he announced he was holding a fundraiser and will be raffling off an air fifteen at the event is the same type of assault weapon used by the shooter in a rural and parody is also announced that he plans to ignore all media questions about the raffle and will not cancel it we're happy to raffling off tickets to

sporting events or gift certificates to restaurants and come to the point america for those in power like we care to openly promoting gun violence by raffling off military grade assault weapons and that is very clearly. the alive war rate fixing scandal is shaping up to be one of the biggest financial crimes in the history of the world we're look at a more than it does of the biggest banks on the planet conspiring to manipulate hundreds of trillions of dollars in the global economy so they can make bigger profits while consumers small business small businesses and entire cities are left

industry the hosts of romney's high dollar reception and dinner on july twenty sixth overwhelmingly you represent banks hedge funds and other financial institutions some of which are embroiled in the libel rate fixing scandal up. me america's banks are history is tonight raising money in london's crime ridden financial district and he probably feels right or home where the romney campaign is throwing two fundraisers a reception and a dinner it will cost you twenty five hundred dollars a person to attend the reception with mitt in the middle of london's financial crime center and twenty five to seventy five thousand dollars to attend a dinner with mitt. the best is pocket change the bank's toure's recently made off with billions by illegally rigging libel rates the fundraisers are supposedly
9:53 pm
reserved only for ex-pats but they're being hosed by several banks toure's and lobbyist with ties to the library scandal including barclays lobbyist patrick durcan the co-chair of romney's fundraisers barclays bank executives have already coughed up more than a million dollars in donations to the romney campaign which is really ticked off british members of parliament who are investigating libel or crimes is the british newspaper the telegraph reports eleven m.p.'s that's m.p.'s members of parliament there because of the house of representatives eleven m.p.'s last week demanded the bank and its directors stop working to bolster mr romney's election campaign and concentrate on repairing confidence in the banking system but of course of route romney still gets you know if he gets on a plane flies all the way across the atlantic ocean comes to party in london's financial district what else is barclays supposed to do i mean the banks he's their

guy mitt romney is their meal ticket. to be. yeah romney is the guy romney is the guy who's going to repeal dodd frank financial regulations free wall street once again to gamble manipulate and do fraud the rest of us so barclays and the rest of the scandal ridden banks are really contributing to mitt romney they're investing in their problems but mitt romney is doing tonight goes way beyond his campaign's racist anglo-saxon remarks which by the way didn't go over all that well in the u.k. either it goes way beyond mitt's shady swiss bank accounts which. people there are pointing out he goes way beyond his years at bain off shoring american jobs and stuffing hundreds of millions of dollars in his own pockets they're all important but holding a fundraiser on foreign soil with gangsters who work for
9:55 pm
a foreign corporation and are currently being investigated for what could be the biggest financial crime in the history of the world that takes the cake that should end the romney campaign for good but it won't and the reason it won't is because the supreme court citizens united ruling that took us down the road of foreigners multinational corporations and criminal banks toure's owning our politicians we have criminal banks committee rampant fraud then investing in our presidential candidates hoping that in return those candidates will pass legislation to legalize their fraud or give them immunity and this is going to continue until we the people stand up and say no more until we as a nation come together to amend the constitution once and for all to overturn citizens united and say that corporations especially foreign criminal banks are not
