4:00 pm
the big. day on our t.v. these days passengers are expected to have some thick skin when it comes to airport security screenings coming up we'll tell you why a man's t. shirt got him kicked off a flight. but if you think the cost of flying is ridiculous these days you don't want to know how much a city in california is paying to have a surveillance plane circled the skies for ten hours a day all for the sake of security we've got the details on this new pilot program . and if you're having a hard time booking a hotel room for the upcoming r. and c. convention in tampa you're in luck police are clearing seventeen hundred jail beds for all the protesters they plan to arrest we'll show you how free speech is being kept on a short leash. it's
4:01 pm
thursday august twenty third four pm here in washington d.c. i'm liz wahl and you're watching our. oh booted from a flight for wearing a silly t. shirt that's exactly what a thirty one year old doctor a student from buffalo new york says happened a rejig goo hoss as he was an issue it was his shirt that caused an airline supervisor to pull him off a flight forcing him to rent a car and find his own way back home this is the shirt that he says sparked it all as you can see it has a mark department of homeland security seal around it are words. zero m.g. terrorists and a lower level blood red it run run take off your shoes. now regent did it did pass the t.s.a. security it was the pilot and airline personnel that decided he couldn't fly
4:02 pm
despite passing extensive security and as a blogger rigid details the whole ordeal from being banned from flying to the searching of his belongings to the interrogations that followed but he believes this is about more than just his t. shirt to discuss this r t correspondent rhonda rowland joins us now from hiram own so would you say this is get another example of freedoms being compromised in the name of security or a necessary precaution. that's right liz the reason that this story is really getting a lot of attention here in the u.s. and really around the world is because this really reinforces the beliefs of people who are really concerned about the increased scrutiny at u.s. airports whether this extra security is really justified and how much it's costing and really you know if our freedom is just going out the window now when it comes to argy his trouble started at the buffalo airport and it wasn't even t.s.a. as you mentioned which stopped him from going on the flight i mean they did
4:03 pm
a question about the sure but they obviously got the joke it was it was really delta who came out and really question is shirt saying that it was an inappropriate i mean he even changed his shirt so that he could get on the flight he allowed them to search him once again even though he had already been through a thorough search him and his wife and despite that delta still told him that the pilot did not feel comfortable when he asked what the reason was delta pretty much said you know use your imagination so definitely are just has taken to the internet to really criticize delta and he points out very. very accurately that this isn't the first time that it's happened that delta last year a delta pilot told a pair of muslim scholars that they couldn't board a flight because he and feel comfortable so definitely it seems like there's a lot of paranoia and and you know it seems like you could be even strip searched
4:04 pm
and they still don't want to let you on the plane so definitely a lot of people thinking that this was quite excessive what happened to this man who happens to be a doctoral student and a cancer survivor and you brought up an interesting point earlier and he did it take to the enter net to kind of voice his frustrations with dealing with what t.s.a. and homeland security and delta throughout this whole thing and he tweeted this he tweeted quote mock the security charade or offend racists. i being brown and delta won't let you fly so ramon this brings up the whole issue of racial profiling i mean we've covered extensively how the n.y.p.d. blatantly racial profiles of muslims as part of their counterterrorism program to what extent is racial profiling a problem within the t.s.a. and homeland security to what extent does it go on that's right well you know it's very difficult to really show tough evidence and even delta themselves has come out
4:05 pm
and said oh we don't discriminate but obviously in the case of our gz and in the case of the muslim men from last year there there still seems to be that some sort of that there's some sort of paranoia over whether you should allow muslims on a plane i mean we even heard of from fox pundit juan williams who said that he scared to get on a plane when he sees an arab person which is you know just mind boggling considering that he's a black man black people have been you know subject to racial profiling for decades so it does seem like people still have that image in it and it really plays into the joke that i was trying to tell with his shirt that we live in a time where this fear of terrorism we're constantly bombarded with it and just pointing out these sort of hypocrisy is apparently is no longer being allowed at airports and you know what some people might say i was looking at the website
4:06 pm
where this man ordered to share it and it even warned him against wearing that shirt to the airport so do you think maybe it could have been poor taste to wear that in the first place. that was ramon glinda that was our to correspondent ramon glinda looks like we lost we're going to move on now too because this week we've been reporting on the number of u.s. service members killed in the war in afghanistan that number has topped two thousand this fact has virtually been ignored by the mainstream media but they are not the only ones remaining silent about the war four years ago senator barack obama and senator john mccain both laid out plans for ramping up and then winding down the wars in iraq and afghanistan now fast forward to two thousand and twelve and now president obama and mitt romney are locked in a close battle and the war in afghanistan doesn't seem to be on their radar today at the white house press briefing r.t. correspondent christine was called on here's her question about the war in
4:07 pm
afghanistan. president got extended leave a whole lot about education one of the we have less about the next four years the war in afghanistan so i guess i want to add to our question first of all what is the plan for the next four years and second of all there's some chatter that the reason that having it because governor romney and the president simply disagree. so i can't speak for governor romney i i think that he has been critical of what the president has made very explicit is his strategy and his policy in afghanistan which is having. having kept his promise to end the war in iraq and bring our troops home. he has refocused he refocused attention on the effort in afghanistan which after all. we entered u.s.
4:08 pm
troops entered because of the attacks on the united states on september eleventh two thousand and one he refocused attention he flushed up our forces there he developed a strategy that make clear that our number one priority the reason why we are in afghanistan is because of al qaida and that our number one objective. for our mission in afghanistan is to disrupt dismantle and ultimately defeat al qaida white house spokesman jay carney answering the question providing information about the of objectives in afghanistan but very few details about the actual plan for the u.s. moving forward. like california city taking surveillance to a whole new level the city of lancaster is scheduled to unveil their new aerial surveillance program tomorrow a plane equipped with video cameras is set to patrol the skies here's a look at just what this program entails uses high tech optical equipment to record people's movements on the ground the drone circles the animal valley city for ten
4:09 pm
hours a day it costs one. point three million dollars to launch the program and it will cost ninety thousand dollars per month to keep it running and it's able to fly to the scene of a nine one one call before the police even arrive were recently discussed how drones will be used domestically as the wars abroad die down and the need for the military need for them wanes so as a city of lancaster a preview of what's to come in cities and towns across the country joining me now to discuss this is ed cray u.c. associate editor for reason magazine ad welcome so at this california city is kind of at the forefront of using aircraft to closely and continuously monitor what is happening on the ground is it making the city safer or is it the beginning of an invasive surveillance system. well i mean the surveillance system is in a large part already here. the lancaster actually tried the years ago and because
4:10 pm
of civil liberties concerns they couldn't get it done but this time was passing honestly and usually into the numbers of how much it cost and i looked through the lancasters budget and they said their police officer gone up by six million dollars over the last five years contributing about twenty million dollars that they designed in other places. the new year plus one point three million in the question are these the values you want from our government ultimately because like you said it's. the united states it's part of a longer process. they have you know helicopters in most major cities in america at this point. the congress passed a law of the president signed the law for. just twenty fourteen. going to the city by city and from like robin. here in the united states sorry and so you had mentioned that the surveillance of the surveillance state i guess is
4:11 pm
already upon us this program does kind of take it to that next level though and there aren't closing the doors on the idea of using drones rather than an airplane do you think that that is the next step that it's going to be drones hovering in the skies constantly surveilling the city is. all right looks like we come there but stay tuned we'll be right back.
4:12 pm
climate of american power continues. things in our country are so bad might actually be time for a revolution. and it turns out that a popular drink of starbucks has a surprising. state
4:13 pm
run english speaking russian channel it's kind of like. russia today has an extremely confrontational stance when it comes to us.
4:14 pm
and what drives the world the fear mongering used by politicians who makes decisions to break through it's already been made who can you trust no one. with the global machinery where we had a. capital. when nobody dares to ask we do r t question more. welcome back we're back now with ed cry you scale associate editor for reason magazine we were discussing this new surveillance system that is patrolling the skies in lancaster california kind of take surveillance to a whole new level and just want to continue the conversation there right there in the california they're implementing this program that basically continuously and we
4:15 pm
have a plane hovering in the skies ten hours at a time it's not a drone but they haven't ruled drones out of the equation yet do you think that this is just kind of the you know the next step before we actually see drones patrolling the skies. well as i was saying before. dawn. drones it's not much of a difference between what this program is and the drones it's really the only difference is that the pilot in the cockpit rather than on the ground because the kind of equipment it has on it is basically coming. in there with me. in the war zone receiving one against. their that's right and they might as well they might as well use drones right i mean a generally it's doing the same thing you see it about i mean when you don't know the month is a lot of money to. burn up ten hours a day. for everyone you know and people say you know it's not it's not a problem because i'm not doing the wrong you know i'm not doing anything wrong but
4:16 pm
that we don't always know about the right you know and we should mention that the city of lancaster the way that they're justifying this has seen a rise in gang violence everything from burglaries to grand theft auto and the mayor there says this will minimize gang members ability to hide from the law so it could actually make the city safer i mean that's what the choppers are for and they've been here for decades and. go down. governor when you. close down or transfer prisoners from a nearby prison or prison from the local authorities that have part of the part of what to do with this crime part but i think when they're when they're. when the crimes of that level i'm not sure that things like aerial surveillance are determined attacks anything more importantly i think everyone has a constitutional guarantee a certain rights which frankly that was a video recording sent back to the sheriff's office. violated and
4:17 pm
safety is not a not an exception to our rights sorry saying that over in this town our city of lancaster do you out expect this to expand to other cities and towns across the united states. i mean i think there are i think there's something like two hundred plus requests for permits at this point from local authorities and both private who are trying to join technology and it's going to be the gates are going to open at the latest by twenty fourteen or so the law so i think we're well on our way there now and i think we're going to see a lot more like it was around the country hopefully vulgarism down to i think with that here with the humanities if we can all go through this. i think i think your legacy father says it's a little actions have consequences right adam thanks so much for weighing in and that was ed cry as a associate editor for reason magazine. well thousands of students taking to the

streets in quebec canada protesting to ition hikes demonstrators say it's a renewal of the protests we saw last spring we're told things got chaotic in the area with police pepper spraying the crowd and students flooding the streets the demonstrations are ahead of call backs general election to be held on september fourth voters will decide a premier jean charest liberal party is going to be reelected he has run on a plan to increase tuition fees over eighty two percent over the next seven years organizers of wednesday's protest said it was the largest planned demonstration seen during an electoral campaign and as a sign that the protest movement is making a comeback there will keep you updated on how it all plays out. for the republican national convention is just around the corner now and as speakers hone their speeches the city of tampa is preparing for a widespread protests and there are apparently doing this by clearing jail cell
4:19 pm
beds in anticipation of mass arrests the sheriff of hillsborough county has ordered seventeen hundred prison beds to be cleared that means that relocating some inmates to handle the many arrests they plan on making so what does this mean for protestors freedom of speech and are there already plans to silence up to discuss this kristin lair and kelly benjamin both participants for occupy tampa join us now welcome there so your reaction to this news seventeen hundred beds cleared to make way for jailed protesters. well i think it's interesting that the only thought that we see in the media from the belief that the you know. you know not about of reject. them. and i mean we do have
4:20 pm
a quote from the mayor that i want to read he says quote there will be arrests the question is how many we are prepared to handle any number of our n.c. related arrests through our orient road jail we are committed to due process and the rule of law regarding r. and c. related arrests we have procedures and policies in place to ensure an orderly and lawful process for anyone arrested so i mean what do you think about that you mentioned that a little bit earlier that there just seems to be this focus on being able to control the protests do you think that the in the effort is being missed directed i went to the l.g. legal observer training recently and learns that in the state of florida. you know if a cop asked you to turn off the camera. you have to turn off the camera and. with all the event regulations i really don't know what they mean by controlled not sure you know what kind of. you know the back of the matter is this is the stage spectacle
4:21 pm
that the republican party is showing it's a circus with a very clear message and they don't want anything to interfere with that message so they're making sure that they're doing everything possible that makes average people who have a grievance to air with the republican party in trying to keep them out of sight out of mind and they will violate people's rights and put them in jail in order to make sure that that message is out there to the american public and that their gender is the one percent their agenda of destroying the middle class and and giving that they're the largest misallocation of resources and putting that large wealth confluence in the hands of the people at the top to make sure that that in this goes out there and then they don't care who's right they violate here on the ground that's the joy of people commute samples very peaceful it want to get their voices out there and agree with this and that's what this country is founded upon and they're trying to make it out to be that dissent is unpatriotic or dissent is
4:22 pm
somehow criminal and they're going to put people in jail and violate people's rights and this is happening. at every political conventions in this go on you can we this is nothing new that's happening it's just unfortunate that the mayor has used rhetoric like a protest get out of hand we're going to brutalize them in the past and i think that's very unfortunate for democracy built on the free exchange of ideas this is not a robust dialogue that's taking place this is the crafted message that they're pumping out in millions of households possum as the champ of the family is not a long history of that conduct the best when it comes to occupying just this last friday we saw them pulling people over and over and searching the harassing intimidating. back and we are going to fix them terrible stories. demonstrated absolute resentment already here now kelly there had mentioned that this is nothing new and wanted to bring up something to six here that kind of highlight the way things have kind of played out at past republican national
