9:30 pm
well go back to the big picture marvin coming up in this half hour even though he's not speaking ron paul stopped by the r. and c. earlier today you're seeing cheers and applause from his supporters but how is the republican party feeling about paul's appearance and how hard are they working to silence the paulista also how much money does it take to buy a seat in congress well shelley agents and things five hundred thousand dollars should do the trick was he throwing his latest campaign donation at what does this say about democracy in america and forty nine years ago today martin luther king jr gave his famous i have a dream speech a speech in which he had vision of a more equal and just america unfortunately republicans are gathering in town tampa this week to undo just about everything and milk a dream. in
9:31 pm
the best of the rest of the news ron paul made a surprise appearance of the republican national convention floor the scepter new receiving a standing ovation from raucous cheers from his supporters since he's not speaking at the convention hall as appearance of the r n c today has been described as a show of solidarity with several hundred delegates who are in tampa the same delegates feel that they're being largely overlooked and marginalized by convention organizers and by the republican party as a whole and they're now trying to mount a fight with the party over its new rules which limit the ability of non establishment candidates like paul to bring delegates to future republican candidates while that romney has more than enough delegates to secure the nomination and win any floor fight back to did win it today the nomination the divide between paulson. borders in the rest of the party is being seen as
9:32 pm
a distraction and a controversy at the republicans don't want maybe can't even afford especially as they try to unite and throw all their energy and support behind romney joining me now to talk more about the growing controversy in tampa and the pollies does a fact on the g.o.p. establishment is austin peterson director of production at freedom works austin well thank you for having me great to have you with us i understand you just got back from tampa bay yes i did i was there with freedom works activists trying to help shape the republican party platform the shaping of the platform occurs the week before the convention that's when all of the delegates get together and decide what the conversation of the republican party should be going forward right now freedom works is is kind of a koch brothers thing and ron paul and his libertarian thing is kind of a ron paul thing the how it where it was the just to be technically accurate there is no connection between freedom works in the koch brothers they don't receive any donations from the koch brothers the americans for prosperity is a separate organization from freedom works which split from the koch brothers organizations quite awhile ago so we are an independent organization and the ron
9:33 pm
paul supporters are themselves very independent of all of those groups so so freedom works then is more ron paul mind you would say that is of a ron paul mind yes there are mostly libertarians who work there and tea partiers grassroots conservatives people who really believe in limited government all we really care about is economics and if you fit the bill for limited government economics then you can be a freedom worker ok interesting what you think of the r. and c. street in iran also or i think it's disgusting i think it's terrible i think that it's causing a rift that the mitt romney does not need right now the ron paul delegates who were at the convention knew that they were not going to win the. nomination for ron paul they really wanted was that ron paul would be given his due fifteen minutes of speaking time for the and a little bit of respect for this ten term congressman who served as an air force flight surgeon and serve his country honorably and well and they didn't get that and unfortunately what happened was was the one paul supporters who were there who were simply trying to get their due they won their delegation seat. they were
9:34 pm
trying to get their seats today the conservative grassroots actually teamed up with the conservative establishment to smack down the ron paul supporters and what happened was there was a rule that was introduced to stop future campaigns and what happened was all of the conservative grassroots when they saw the rule they realized oh wait a minute this isn't meant to disenfranchise nonsupport ron paul's words it's meant to disenfranchise the entire grassroots base now the republican party and so it was too late by that time in the establishment managed to pass this rule which changes the game for the future so that almost no anti-establishment candidate would have a chance in the future to be able to mount a campaign does this mean the bull moose party or some variation of it is going to reemerge the will be a new new split out of this it's becoming very dangerously close to that you know republicans people who call themselves republicans who are truly libertarians who come up to me today and send me thousands of e-mails and tweets saying there's absolutely no way that i can get behind this romney ryan ticket what should i do austin what should i do should we start

9:35 pm
a new party and it does seem to be that there is some talk about that. dick armey is a multimillionaire lobbyist here and k. street in d.c. is isn't he the head of freedom works yes he is the technical head of freedom works but our new real head who is the president c.e.o. who is the functioning manager of freedom works is a man by the name of matt kibbey who is a real ron paul libertarian ok and armey is the city chair that's correct. can you identify any country in the history of the world anywhere that has had a middle class as a consequence of libertarian economic policy absolutely the united states has absolutely well there's been several periods united states where we were a little bit more free than others i think one of the best periods that you could look at in american history is the time that we were on the gold standard some people talking about the gilded age there was no there were roughly no middle class that well there was a burgeoning middle class that was the growth of the middle class in the united states when we had a lot of it was the growth of the robber baron well this was the demick. president
9:36 pm
grover grover cleveland who was one of the best presidents in american history that we had one of the last good democrat in the in eight hundred eighty seven in his speeches his annual address to the nation is his state of the union address said that we are seeing corporations rise up and put their irony on the necks of the citizens you know tom i have to say it's always so disingenuous of the left when they try and paint libertarians as being so pro corporatist when it is really libertarians i go out and fight the fights against these corporations and the lobbying that they do and the and the corporate subsidies that they get all the time we are so against what is the opposite that if you're going to say we want to hear from on government that's right and then then what is the alternative somebody has to be providing things somebody has to be doing things if it's not government right it's going to be one percent of the people in this country are doing things on the other fifty percent of the country are taking from them so you know there are people going in this country yeah absolutely. that's why the takers in the maker yes resolutely they're romney is one of the takers well i don't know mitt much about mitt romney's corporate past but at least mitt romney understands the
9:37 pm
fact is that they're that capitalism produces a middle class and that's what you want in this country want to have the last of the biggest the biggest and strongest middle class is in the fifty's sixty's and seventy's and eighty's it was the result of government programs it was the result dwight eisenhower spending a fortune in the one nine hundred fifty s. because we had over the road it's going to build the roads there are plenty of of the roads you build highways he built he built schools people all kinds of stuff right and it got us out of it got us out of the debt but one of the money come to build the roads tom borrowed it would both be borrowed it right but who had to make the money you have to make money to spend money tom in the stimulated the economy and that stimulus. is order so then you are a democratic party operatic pro stimulus kind of a guy that says the big guy on the court because i was a quiet just saying that you cannot identify one country where libertarian principles have ever you know you never success you're sitting in right now and you don't really have and the left rails against it was government policies that created the middle class or you want to scandalous or you were going. since reagan
9:38 pm
that is destroying the middle class america name one country i can give you twenty or thirty of us there only after the fall of the of the soviet union they liberalize stony remember liberalism classical liberalism is libertarianism tom i did my show two years ago from a stone and stone is very rapidly stratified into a population of very poor and very rich you've got you've got the you've got the you've got the oligarchy driving around in their limousines and you've got the basically the peasants no two choices tom you've got liberty or tyranny and you got to go one way or the other and if you're if you're railing against corporations and you really hate corporatism then you have to be against stimulus you have he's saying he's got to hear it does the corporations want stimulus you understand the big banks the big bankers the financier's they want stimulus all of these you know the koch brothers whoever it is that the conspiracy theory of the left the that is the pushing out you are feeding in to the left to the left probably you are feeding into the problem that you are railing against tom if you really want to take power
9:39 pm
away from called corporations you have to take away from government corporations only get the power of the public gives to them by voluntary interactions and transactions if you really want to limit the power of corporations introduce capitalism and free markets because then they'll have competition that's how you'll create like the one in this stony right after the fall the soviet union absolutely . one country one country all right. thanks a lot thank you very much tom. just. good for good or bad in a very very compact because generously ugly the good new york state senator daniel squadron despite losing many of its members over the past several months alec is still alive and well and still influencing corporate friendly legislation across america and since somehow alec is still registered as a nonprofit group and not as a lobbying group it can influence as much legislation as it wants without anyone knowing however new york state senator daniel squadron
9:40 pm
a democrat has tried to change that he's created a web page on his official site as state legislators or candidates for state legislatures to sign a pledge disclosing whether or not alec has influenced any legislation that may have sponsored or been introduced while the pledge is completely voluntary it's clear squadron is trying to put some transparency and accountability back into government and that's exactly what america needs the bad donald trump trump the darling of the republican party and boxer called news really doesn't like it when journalists call him out in fact he hates us so much that he calls them names on twitter recently to the recently salon's alex perino and was called a total joke in political circles and vanity fair's julie winner a third rate struck by donald trump and this morning the man with the world's worst hair plugs decided to lash out at arianna huffington in a tweet trump said kerry on huffington is unattractive both inside and out i fully
9:41 pm
understand why her former husband left her for a man who made a good decision you know i don't know what's worse the fact that the donald things people care he that he has you know what he has to say or the fact that republicans actually listen to. and a very very ugly tom smith a week after congressman todd akin made his mind blowing legitimate rape comments smith the republican senate candidate from pennsylvania said something almost as ignorant in an interview with an a.p. reporter yesterday smith compared getting pregnant from rape to having a baby out of wedlock smith thinks that getting pregnant as a result of a brutal sexual assault with major life time psychological effects is the same thing as having a baby through consensual sex you think every republican in their brother would be watching their words after a gaffe but i guess not so again we have another republican who is just completely out of touch with women and sexual assault and that is very very ugly.
9:42 pm
after the break sheldon adelson and see casino mogul turned republican bankroller is throwing half a million dollars much of our from outside the united states at a congressional race in new jersey is buying and selling congressional seats with foreign money really passing for democracy these days alas the man getting all of a deal dirty money.

this day forty nine years ago the reverend dr martin luther king gave his most famous speech telling three hundred thousand americans gathered together at the lincoln memorial here in washington d.c. that he had a dream. here was dr king's dream in his own words are have a dream. but one day. this married someone will grow up and live out the true meaning of it. we're all good news self-evident that all men are created. forty nine years later this day today republicans are meeting in tampa florida to turn king's dream back into the nightmare of inequality and segregation that he lived through the reverend dr martin luther king and had a dream that the sweltering heat of oppression would transform into an away says of freedom and justice he had a dream that in southern states where race is sell our one day little black
9:46 pm
children little white children would join hands as brothers and sisters in the decades since dr king's speech this nation has worked very hard to make king's dream a reality and we've succeeded in many ways although there's still a lot of work to do but today dr king's dream is in danger like never before. today we have a republican party with their stars flipped upside down it's actually trying to overturn the voting rights act of one thousand nine hundred sixty five a significant achievement from dr king's era that outlawed black voter suppression through things like poll taxes and literacy tests we have more than a half dozen state attorneys general all from states with a long history of denying minorities the vote petitioning the supreme court to strike down the voting rights act and let republican state legislatures pass alex radical voter suppression id laws that could kick one in four blacks off the voting rolls in november we have
9:47 pm
a republican party that will rely on race baiting and dog whistle politics to question the legitimacy of our nation's first black president you'll hear from the birth ers you'll hear from those who refer to obama as the food stamp president you'll hear the word welfare used over and over again in karl rove's advertisements and you'll hear calls for state's rights that code phrase used to justify decades of racism and oppression before and during king's era the king didn't just have a jew all of them. you are a modern. not only. bug you are reminded of a miniature. battle. cry. to
9:48 pm
a little bit in this month today from andrew starr a vision where you. from but king didn't just have a dream about racial equality he had a dream about economic equality he was assassinated in memphis while supporting the striking sanitation workers union told him this. d. told him what i just shared with you i'm sorry and yet today unions have been decimated the gap between workers and c.e.o.'s is larger than ever and wealth inequality in america is at levels unseen even before kings time at the r. and c. convention politicians will be applauded for their war on organized labor scott walker's a deity in tampa for taking on the public sector unions chris christie earned a ketone speaking gig for taking on the teachers' union in kings there are a narrow nearly a third of the american workforce was unionized today it's around ten thanks to those very same people who are speaking tonight and over the next few days in tampa
9:49 pm
king's dream for economic equality is becoming a nightmare and the same thing is happening with his dream for world peace be on racial and economic inequality king dreamed and spoke often of peace and he said in new york city in one thousand nine hundred sixty seven in a speech against the vietnam war. we have a choice today a nonviolent coup or existence a bomb crew on a nation we must move past indecision direction. we must find new ways to speak for peace in vietnam just as the developing. world that borders on doors we do not act we show should be dragged down by. and shame or adores the power line reserved for those who possess power without compassion might without more. and strength without right.
9:50 pm
now let us rededicate ourselves to the bitter beautiful struggle for. today we're in a never ending war on terror promoted by those same people that you'll be hearing in tampa florida in fact the one voice the republican party who aligns with dr king in opposition to war ron paul has been banned from speaking at the convention instead he's been very place by people like john boehner and rick santorum who want even more war who believe america's army is god's army and should bring democracy to the middle eastern drone strikes cruise missiles and cluster bombs. america is already too far down those long dark shameful corridors that those nations that possess power without compassion have walked in the past dr g. dr king's dream of peace is a nightmarish night in tampa florida and so on this night nearly a half century after king talked about his dream we should all be aware of the choice in front of us it's
9:51 pm
a choice that frankly couldn't be any clearer on one side we have the dream or nightmare coming from the r n c a dream that only the wealthy can be trusted the minorities are flawed and the endless wars destined by god in on the other side we have the american dream a dream road inequality economic justice and lasting peace the dream handed down to us by the reverend dr martin luther king and a dream that our nation can and will achieve if we just all working at it and don't give into the politics of division we're hearing coming from tampa the stakes couldn't be higher. so how much does a cross to buy a seat in the united states house of representatives casino mogul sheldon adelson thinks a half million bucks should do it who's already spent more money than any other this election so far is promising to drop five hundred thousand dollars in and
9:52 pm
years in new jersey congressional district to elect republican candidate rabbi shmuley boteach and of rabbi go take needs more money it'll soon is more than capable with a net worth of about twenty five billion dollars the center for american progress points out with that much money you could give a half a million dollars to every single republican nominee in every single house and senate seat in every single election cycle for the next one hundred eighty six years without running out of money the latest recipient of a deal since fortune rabbi but take commented about the donations saying i think sheldon adelson will bring democracy to the to the ninth district of new jersey is that really the case well joining me now to explain why it is good for democracy in america is none other than rabbi shmuley boteach a broadcaster and author and republican candidate for congress in new jersey's eight district shmuley it's great to see you again welcome appeared to you through i assume that means that you're not going to be matching his donation am i correct
9:53 pm
probably not probably why is one billionaire bankrolling a campaign for congress a good thing for our democracy or our republic. because the biggest problem in politics is not outside monetary donations the biggest problem in politics is incumbency george washington thomas jefferson were citizen politicians right they were farmers they went for a few years served their country went back to private service no one invision what we have today the entrenched incumbent lifetime politician who cannot be removed which is why only about fifteen seats change and in every normal election cycle when you're an incumbent you have name recognition you brought the pork home. you were people are afraid to donate to your challenger because you may retaliate etc when some of the children adults and comes along and even the stakes it means that finally the people in the moment that you are going to get a raise do you know that my challenger has not updated his website since the primary on the fifth of june he refuses the baby refuses to meet me or if you like
9:54 pm
so many other incumbents he won't even earn people's vote isn't that far worse well yeah you may well have a lousy. congressman there and certainly there are a few of mouth there but the large right wing donors of these twenty six angry white men and. characterize them much of their money is not going to insurgent candidates like you and you folks in new faces on the scene united known each other for years and on talk radio business and i have a lot of respect for you i have to say you know even though our politics are very very different a lot of that money is not going to people like you it is going to incumbents it's going to people who are better in office for twenty and thirty and forty years because of their politics these guys aren't funding an insurgency except to the point where they can get rid of democrats well of the respect is mutual and that's great to be on your program and thank you for having me look i can't speak for other races. i'm running against
9:55 pm
a guy who just i'm going to allow the politician i will say that it's kind of contemptuous and cowardly of him not to want to earn people's vote but let's be honest this is true not just of bill pascrell my opponent it's true of most incumbents i am. actually believe we should have term limits i think that the rate of incumbency which is ninety five percent of the house it's eighty five percent in the senate is way way too high you've got charlie rangle who fought in places like you know valley or jews were still there it was not supposed to be that way so rather than decrying the citizens united decision that allows wealthy people to fund a candidate through super pacs independent super pacs let's condemn incumbency and by the way i am all for revamping all of american politics through option of gerrymandering which is even worse i mean john gerrymandering on the on the term limits what we've seen in the states that have done that is that the lobbyists end up having a lot more influence because they become the permanent political infrastructure but let's not turn this into a debate about either of those issues i'd like to stay on this on this one if i may what if pascrell your opponent were to receive double what you were just given if
9:56 pm
george soros gave him a million bucks does that mean our democracy is better off. well if that happens i'll debate that but what we have now is he had two and half million dollars in the democratic primary that's a lot of money to and he spent it all he's left with two hundred thousand dollars when i first started to run i had no idea and this is in january this year that money played such an incredible role i know it sounds like i'm being naive but i thought my ideas would matter i thought that my dedication was better they matter a little bit but it's the media who's a real problem because they determine your viability as a candidate by c.o.h. cash on hand every time they talk about my candidacy he can't win because he doesn't have enough c.o.h. now that they see that we got to the wall street journal reports that we got a half a million dollars in a in a super pac they're saying i'm suddenly viable now it's the media that does that by the way there was like an associated press story about candidates who are sacrificial lambs they put me there before the adelson donation because they said that we can't win in a democratic district and that's all because we don't have enough money if i run
9:57 pm
even in a democratic district but forget outside super pacs if i raise ten million dollars they're going to say i'm viable not because i have good speeches not because i connect with voters not because i have good ideas because i have money money dominates american politics. by the way i saw that sheldon adelson was quoted i think in forbes where he said he wishes there were there were money in politics but so long as people like george soros are going to give a lot he's going to match it see i kind of agree with that sentiment surely surely we're we're we're out of time here but i you know i have to say if your criticism is of money and politics in america i am absolutely with you. thanks a lot for being with us tonight thank you so much for having me other board of being there again i'll see in congress and most likely that's the big picture tonight if you missed any and i would show you can now watch it in h.d. on hulu it too it would slash the big picture and don't forget democracy begins with you get out there and get active tag you're it.
