post foreclosure and you know they're they're in better shape and it makes economic sense for them so the idea that this is a punishment that they can satisfy some of this settlement through short sales is is really ridiculous because it's something they were already doing before the settlement and something they're happy to do because it makes economic sense for them in these cases where they're going to foreclose on this borrower anyway ok so you think this practice of banti that you know the banks using this practice of short sales is than kind of gaming the system. well partially i mean a short sale is certainly a better idea than a foreclosure what it isn't is a punishment i mean the banks make out fairly well the homeowner makes out better than in a foreclosure but it doesn't the homeowner does not get to keep their home and there is a bit of a gaming of the system going on because basically what the bank is doing is saying
6:08 pm
we're not going to go after you for the rest of that money if we get a sale price is less than what you on the mortgage we're not going to go after you at a later date for rest of that money well in twelve states in the country which are non-recourse states the banks can't go after someone for the rest of that money in the event of a foreclosure or a short sale or anything so what you have is a bank getting credit for a punishment for a penalty that they have to pay for something that they couldn't actually do which is go after a borrower after they sell the home in a deficiency judgment or whatever you want to call it so there is some gaming going on and about. mentioning those twelve states five billion of the eight point six or eight point seven billion that actually has been. counted by the office of mortgage settlement oversight in these short sales we're in non-recourse states particularly
6:09 pm
in california and arizona also in the end here dave at our banks are really being held accountable. i mean just have to look at it this way the settlement has been in place for six months after this six months there have been seven thousand borrowers who have gotten relief in terms of a principal reduction which was the purpose of the consumer relief we were told at the beginning when the settlement was and we were told that a million people would benefit from these these issues and you know the settlement itself was twenty five billion dollars when we have seven hundred billion dollars in negative equity it was always a slap on the wrist before but as we see it roll out. a very very small amount of people are actually getting the relief that they were promised and most of the money is you know most of the credit for on the on the part of the banks is
6:10 pm
being done in things that they were already doing and i don't know how you can call that punishment at all david very interesting thank you so much for coming on the show that was david dye and blogger for firedoglake thank you. but it's the final day of the republican national convention of the day has come for republican presidential nominee mitt romney to tell america why he should be the next commander in chief leading up to today a series of speeches and events that have showcased a vision and controversy within the republican party one of the clearest examples tension between ron paul supporters and the establishment republicans to talk more about this artsy white house correspondent christine for joined us earlier from the republican national convention in tampa. an interesting dynamic going on yesterday we saw those ron paul supporters the delegates from maine once again all walk out of the convention hall in unison taking up
6:11 pm
a whole lot of room i should mention they waited for the ron paul tribute video to play they waited for rand paul's speech and then they were gone they seem to really be angry at the way everything has really gone down here without even letting them have their voices heard christina and you know ron paul he declined a slot to speak at the republican national convention but as you as you mentioned they did play there courtesy tribute video they had at the event here's a look at it for those with dedication. sometimes that we. are a christiana how are ron paul supporters reacting to that video. frankly
6:12 pm
the mixed reactions live we've heard responses range from inspiring to offensive a whole lot of people that are here in support of ron paul both convention goers as well as delegates of course happy that they had a video at all but let me put this in a little perspective you said ron paul declined a speaking slot ron paul declined a speaking sign because a he would have had to fully endorse mitt romney which he says he doesn't believe he would have had to have his speech heavily vetted both by the r. and d. and the romney campaign to prove those are the conditions under which he denied a speaking slot here back to this video live less than four minutes it talked about the fact that ron paul has never voted for a tax increase that ron paul has never voted to expand the debt ceiling the story the lives really in what wasn't said in this video ron paul has asked for an audit of the federal reserve and reserve and in fact the republican platform committee has adopted that as part of this year's platform so he was happy about that no
6:13 pm
mention whatsoever of his position on the military he has also called for an audit of the pentagon when ron paul says he wants moeller government and much much less government spending he means it across the board not just from these so-called entitlement programs he wants it from the place where the majority of the money actually is spent and that is the military so a lot of people who support ron paul by the way as we've reported time and time again a lot of support from military veterans military veterans in poll after poll have been shown to support ron paul above any other candidate who was present in this primary race leading up to the convention here this is an important issue and to have it not mention whatsoever with pretty offensive and frankly and i'll use their words repulsive to some of these supporters who i spoke to another side note was it's really interesting you know as you know as our viewers know we have covered ron paul conservative. only for the last four years so it has been interesting
6:14 pm
being here as a member of our team america people coming up to me recognizing me telling me you know we want our team because of your coverage and it's been really interesting i think a whole lot of the other networks a lot of the other mainstream media and the establishment political parties here in this country very surprised to see what has happened with these ron paul delegates and what has happened overall with his inability to come out of this convention with the support and unity behind mitt romney that a lot of people here expected and christine you know there is this hope within the libertarian movement that rand paul will carry the torch of his father ron paul but based on last night's speech rand paul's speech afy r. and c. does it appear that he's doing that. well a lives that was really really interesting as i mentioned a lot of the delegates in support of ron paul a lot of people here expected a dynamite speech expected a speech that was sort of set the stage for ron paul run in twenty sixteen over the
6:15 pm
weekend at the rally he gave a very different speech in support of his father in last night's speech he didn't even mention his father by name he simply talked about on his immigrant grandfather who came to this country and had a son who has became a texas congressman and ran for president that line met with a whole lot of applause from the audience here but really really toned down and that's one thing i want to focus on i mean rand paul talked about obamacare how he thinks it's unconstitutional he's on to about immigrant families that he knows you know a cambodian family who owns a donut shop in his neighborhood in kentucky who went on to have children who are valedictorian. really focusing on the republican message which you know i will say seems to poll very well among conservatives which is the rebuilt that long line said by president obama when he was referring to the fact that you know it's kind of it takes a village it takes a school teacher. it takes people who help you along the way to have
6:16 pm
a successful business it takes safer roads and bridges for you to be able to transport whatever it is that you're selling that line by the president of ford's use time and time again everywhere around this convention center and all around the forum where the convention is being held are signs that say yes mr president we did build that or we built it this is the line that rand paul focused heavily on in his speech last night i will i do want to mention he did sort of touch upon his father's message and his message of far less military spending take a listen. to republicans and democrats alike the most lay their sacred cow republicans must acknowledge that not every dollar spent on the military is necessary or well spent. so really very little is said by rand paul senator rand paul from kentucky about
6:17 pm
the overside military he said you know the united states needs to be careful not to trade their liberties for a false promise of security but really that was it so from the perspective of ron paul supporters and that's really who we've been talking to quite a bit over the last few days from their perspective a disappointing speech by senator rand paul because they really wanted to hear more of these messages that has really really drawn them to his father congressman ron paul from texas you know i've seen a lot of discussions on the internet today over twitter over e-mail people just talking about how disappointed they are calling rand even just another member of the g.o.p. establishment and i mean it seems like that's what happened that he kind of stuck to talking points that are more palatable for the establishment g.o.p. is that kind of feeding these fears within the libertarian movement that rand paul who they hope will carry the torch is going to be more of a turn turn out to be
6:18 pm
a sellout. well you know you can say a fellow or you can say somebody who wants to get in by playing by the rules you know the common expression you can't govern if you can't if you don't win well perhaps that's what senator rand paul is trying to do he's trying to carry the ron paul revolution messages and do so in a place where he can actually implement them as opposed to you know this side movement which i've as we've seen over the years has grown has become very popular has become very large but you know when you break down the numbers ron paul you know couldn't get past this primary process to get enough delegate numbers in order to become the nominee so perhaps you know and we don't know we don't know i got to mention this was we don't know what rand paul's speech looked like when he submitted it to the republican national committee for vetting we don't know if it's that whole lot more about the military industrial complex about auditing the credit pentagon we don't know what he wanted to say first but it seems to me was and this
6:19 pm
is just from my observation that this is the guy was trying to you know play to both parties to to play to the supporters of his father and also to actually be in office long enough to do something right christine thanks so much for staying on top of everything over there in tampa that was our tea white house correspondent christine for us out last night was the first time foreign policy was discussed some of the leading voices within the g.o.p. took to the stage to rally support for military intervention in syria despite this the main headlines are of course v.p. pick paul ryan's highly anticipated speech so i think. the samaritan part was the least effective part of the speech to me because he did not feel very comfortable to me in the beginning of that speech giving it as he got into it when he got to releases where he it seemed like he still more couple would seem to be more policy oriented tonight really belongs to mitt romney what do we
6:20 pm
know. how are you preparing for tonight steve we do know that he has practiced you remember a poor boy that came out on sunday when he was and was fairly new hampshire at the residence there that he was practicing a virtual replica same teleprompter same distance on the teleprompter working on the speech we're told by the campaign is a bit of a change to work we hear there's a rumor that clint eastwood may show up. can you imagine dirty harry speaking at this forum steps from me carol costello i mean what a night it will be here's what i can tell you here's what i can confirm that the romney camp is telling c.n.n. yes there is this mystery gas that there will be all these character witnesses you know folks who worked with romney. staples during the salt lake city olympics and also when he was you know running the state of the governments of two states but we cannot definitively tell you that clint eastwood is showing up here. all this hype when we have political figures pushing for the u.s. to get involved in another military conflict take on the leaders of rice's remarks
6:21 pm
last night and she wasn't alone senator john mccain also blamed the president for not doing enough and syria and pushed for prompt military action. dictators in iran and syria but you're their people and threatened regional security when other courageous people for it for their freedom against sworn enemies of the united states american presidents both republicans and democrats have acted to help them prevail. and some headlines and print suggest military intervention is precisely what's going to happen here's a look at a few of the obama threatens to invade syria the syrian foreign minister according to this year foreign minister u.s. is major player in the civil war from the washington post france urges action and syria and turkey to open a new syria refugee camps for up to one hundred twenty thousand so it looks like the ultimate plan is to intervene militarily here. as state department spokesperson
6:22 pm
victoria nuland as the secretary said to me we're in istanbul we have to first of all look at on the hastening the day some of the effectiveness what we're already doing the ground situation that we are seeing which is changing and evolving and what more could be done by allies and partners to support the syrian opposition. but how does the public feel about another military conflict the polls say there isn't strong public support take a look at this poll sixty three percent of americans favor a multilateral economic sanctions fifty eight percent support u.s. and its allies and forcing no fly zones two thirds support the idea of enforcing save havens inside syria by arab league by the arab league and turkey forty eight percent favor sending weapons and other supplies to rebels forty seven percent oppose overall a little support for u.s.
6:23 pm
ground troop involvement. what i discuss u.s. foreign policy and syria i'm joined now by cole bokken fell director for advocacy for the project on middle east democracy coal welcome thank you so what do you think about those figures overall it seems that americans aren't overwhelmingly on board with the idea of direct intervention i think there's generally true i think some of the comments that you see from condi rice and john mccain it's interesting that those aren't reflective of the romney campaign's position that they're actually much further in front of him and his positions very consistent with the administration at this point i don't think there's a lot of appetite for much more than we're seeing right now. as we just saw we saw mccain and rice really pushing for military intervention mccain really criticizing obama for not doing enough over there. and you could see it was interesting you could see the attendees of the event at the r n c they seem to be onboard seem to kind of be in support but you don't see in the kind of you do not see the kind of
6:24 pm
passionate support years ago in private at the prior conventions where people were so ramped up and hyped about going into afghanistan going into iraq what do you think the reasoning is behind that people not really understand the conflict in syria because it's more complicated more not as relevant what do you think i think i think of course the examples of iraq and afghanistan it was do very different time in the wake of nine eleven and people had much more of an appetite to go after our enemies abroad and the u.s. was very much under threat by these regimes as to not the case with syria it's a much more difficult case and that's why even the proponents of intervention will much more likely point to humanitarian intervention rather than the existential threat of this regime to the u.s. or its allies in the region so it seems this time around that foreign policy is kind of on the back burner it doesn't have as much passion or there's not that much interest these days over much so i think even even among. in the new conservative
6:25 pm
the right community there's a lot of criticism about the romney campaign not speaking very very much on foreign policy and national security issues the way the republican party has done historically and socially a lot of the positions so far have essentially boiled down to what we would we would do with the administration but we would do it sooner and tougher but when you really try and deal and tease out some specifics on that they're a little bit light and that's what i think a lot of the community would like to see more details on this new some alternatives right but what we what we are seeing is these top figures kind of taking this very hard line stance when it comes to syria and the u.s. off dead and what we have been seeing is taking this more non interventionist approach in terms of doing things not not as blatantly about doing things from or behind the scenes and based on that poll that we just saw it appears that that's what americans would favor and yet that is seems to be really at odds with what is
6:26 pm
being pushed by some of these figures within the g.o.p. why do you think there is this disconnect here well i think a lot of a lot of the sentiment is coming from the new conservative wing of the republican party where the ideas of intervention based on based on human rights and democracy and so on are still very popular and these are a lot of bush administration officials that still very much believe in that school that's cool thought is not one that's been primarily reflected in the campaign and as you mentioned earlier i think it's something where there's much of the same environment the same mood in u.s. public opinion we're going to approach these problems do you think you mentioned the bush administration sentiment do you think that the romney campaign sentiment mimics that of the bush administration in terms of their hard line stance on foreign policy well it's a little bit early to tell just because they haven't really spoken in detail about a lot of this i mean what you can see is that a lot of the campaign's advisors their foreign policy advisers are made up of
6:27 pm
a lot of former admitted. gratian bush administration officials so it is you know you can draw those lines but i guess that i think on both sides of the debate people want more details to sort of see where they come down on these debates. we are seeing this rhetoric do you think it is a sign that military intervention in syria at this point is inevitable i don't think so i think there's a lot of rhetoric i think both the french president and president obama have recently sort of staked out red lines that i think were implied especially with the use of chemical weapons as obama said he said well that would change my calculus on military intervention. but the signals a move toward intervention i don't think so i don't think we're close to there i think right now the strategy is much more undermining assad's support internally from different from different directions. you know we are based on this rhetoric is seems like there there is this this push to portray it as black and white the
6:28 pm
syrian. conflict in syria as a black and white kind of good versus evil almost this simple simplification of what is going on there do you think it could be a disservice by characterizing it like that when in fact what's going on there is quite complicated those divil a very complicated i think that's really would tendered the administration for making more decisive action a lot of what they've been doing is spending a lot of time really trying to get to know the opposition the differences between the internal opposition versus the external opposition the implements of outside actors where different communities fall on the spectrum and until they can sort of get a better map a better sort of spectrum of of this i think that will hold back really a lot of action ok i want to switch gears a little bit i want to play a clip from you from newly elected dejection president mohamed morsy let's first take a listen to this. our solidarity with the struggle of the syrian people against an oppressive regime that has lost its legitimacy is
6:29 pm
an ethical duty and a political and strategic necessity we all have to announce our full solidarity with the struggle of those seeking freedom and justice in syria we must translate the sympathy into a clear political vision that supports a peaceful transition to a democratic system of rule this will reflect the demands of the syrian people for freedom. ok so we have very strong words there from this from morsi what do you think he meant by by that what exactly did he mean by that kind of support or i think morsi of course just just until recently until he came into power he was on the side of the freedom fighters the dissenters and so on and so i think he's sending a message to the syrian people that we're with you and this is a very big shift i think for egypt and particular i mean this message delivered in iran it will have big impact. called thank you so much for coming out and coming
