look up guys thanks so much for tuning into the brand new show that i've been working super hard all month to bring you i'm your host abby martin and this is breaking the set for i may be smashing through the left right paradigm set in the media and political establishment to find a middle ground of truth well today marks the first day of the democratic national convention and the corporate press will undoubtedly be running campaign footage nonstop the entire week covering back and forth bipartisan bickering will probably won't be mentioned much of the massive protests expected to take place around the convention and the subsequent police state that's been forced to prepare for the swell of dissent just like they are and see some monstrous issues will likely be ignored like how the u.s. economy needs to run on perpetual warfare for the fact that most political representatives work to do just the bidding of their corporate masters no no no you won't be hearing about any of these things at the d.n.c.
6:02 pm
why because both parties are indistinguishable when it comes to these core issues they're both part of the problem and that is why breaking the set. i. this country was founded upon the importance of a free press to keep the powers that be in check but now only six corporations control everything you read and hear in the mainstream and mostly what they do is back page distort or outright censor the real issues so here's your daily weapon of mass distraction from the corporate controlled media establishment all i've seen lately on the corporate news as the coverage of the republican and democratic national conventions seems that everything leading up to this for around the clock coverage of speeches and punditry or of course the issues that are really important are being addressed right you know like the abysmal state of the economy and the need to cut government spending yeah finally right well every r. and c.
6:03 pm
speaker last week made a point to say that the government can't seem to stop spending take a look. the world knows that when a nation loses control of its finances it eventually loses control of its destiny we can't afford another five hundred billion dollars in cuts in our defense budget on top of the nearly five hundred billion in cuts that depression is already making we are going to have to reduce to touch. and we can do it without compromising national security which you have to do in the tele to play when you do it quickly and when you do it across the board that's not an intelligent. jaegers we possibly can't look weak on defense hom so do you know what the government was doing while you were being told that the government is spending too much money when the last couple weeks the pentagon spent close to eight billion dollars on a bunch of crap we probably won't ever need to take a look at what some of these purchases included let's see where do i start well
6:04 pm
volvo got a seven hundred seventy six million dollar contract for construction equipment awesome i should finally create some jobs right here in america right actually no a lot of the work to build these machines will actually be conducted in sweden and . korea the up swing and miss not to a good start their next up weapons manufacturer a theone got a cool eighty two million dollars for some decorum missiles that can jam radios and disrupt guidance mechanisms oh joy more of war toys what a surprise so what else did we get for all that money you guessed it even more war toys dropped an easy thirty three million dollars for an air force satellite bus the middle part of the satellite and the spending doesn't end there u.s. as the navy's super carrier the u.s.s. abraham lincoln is getting a fancy twenty three million dollar upgrade the lincoln carrier is a vessel powered by a nuclear reactor so it needs constant and very costly maintenance here's another
6:05 pm
big one half a billion dollars on new rockets for the air force they're called sounding rockets and they showed up at the airport in orbit to collect data and parachute it down they pretty much do the same work as old school weather balloons did except with a much much bigger price tag and last up on today's big spending list for the last couple weeks was a three hundred six million dollar contract to upgrade bradley fighting vehicles bradley is are well they're u.s. army's tank killers so valued that the army spent over half a billion dollars upgrading them even though this country hasn't had a major to battle and well over twenty years now well seems like money well spent to me so well the pentagon and the dia d. continue to pretend like they're victims of a looming draconian budget cut they continue to spend huge amounts of money upgrading weapons system and beefing up their current military stockpile a lot of which isn't even manufactured in this country once again the big charade
6:06 pm
of the national conventions is shifting the focus to whine about government spending where it's needed the most the most vulnerable sections of the population while not much mention in the unabated funding to the military into the pockets of giant weapons many. factures you know i'm getting really sick of the rhetoric coming from both sides of the same coin we need to make the already largest military country in the world a bigger and stronger by the day to fight all those nonexistent enemies out there and if you don't agree with that well frankly you must be anti american or you must not support the troops look the us military apparatus is already bigger than the next ten countries combined and to quote the prolific dr king a nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense and on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death. now while we're on the subject of war spending i wanted to talk about a recent milestone for the united states two thousand u.s. servicemen and women have been killed in afghanistan and i know this isn't breaking
6:07 pm
news by any means and fact there's been well over one hundred more soldiers killed there in the last few weeks but what i find especially interesting is that the rate at which our troops are being killed and we showed what i mean here the first thousand dead occurred after about eight and a half years into the war the second thousand just two and a half years later now americans are dying at a rate of about one per day and afghanistan isn't even on the radar of politicians now to help us gain a little more perspective about the u.s. continued wars in the middle east and joined by retired army colonel douglas macgregor thank you so much for joining me douglas so you initially supported the afghanistan war you have been in the military for decades your you have a ph d. in political theory and you are considered one of the greatest military strategists what what was the turning point for you was it when the mission was shifted to nation building well as part of it the principle problem is that we decided to use a sledgehammer when we really needed to sculp all so we poured hundreds of
6:08 pm
thousands of conventional forces into the country into a country that's already seen a phobic doesn't like foreigners and we're now reaping the whirlwind as a result we've cultivated millions of new enemies in the process well i think a lot of people don't even understand the words continuing i mean we saw obama's you know a victory lap at lap and bag room we saw him basically declare the end of combat missions there in the country but as we know we just saw i mean the rate of people dying there is more than ever douglas why do people think that the war is is over well the sad truth is very few people in the united states have any connection to people inside the military particularly those in the army in the marines as a result when someone dies it's someone else's family it's remote from them and the war has simply followed off the agenda. no one hears about it no one's interested in it and politically it's a dead end no one wants to talk about it because the truth is after the election we're going to start getting out there do you think so i mean i want to pull this
6:09 pm
sort of question away there was never much to with to begin with there are only a few hundred interviews their involvement al qaeda many of them escaped what we've effectively neutralized the limited al qaeda then we decided to embark on a broader mission and we we've made new enemies that really were never there to begin with and that's the whole problem the war on terrorism and i want to switch gears and talk about something geo politically very relevant right now which is syria the u.s. state department spokesperson victoria no one she's talking about hillary clinton's recent trip to turkey i want to play a clip really quick from from that speech. as the secretary said when we are only we're in istanbul we have to first of all look at the hastening the day. the effectiveness what we're already doing the ground situation that we're seeing which is changing and evolving and what more could be done by our allies and partners to support the syrian opposition against that litmus test of
6:10 pm
not causing more harm not causing more suffering in syria so obviously those issues but also the day after issues of support that the syrian people might. so there she is i mean nato is also talking of a lot about a no fly zone over the country we hear a lot of rhetoric from the political media establishment of assad and the chemical weapons i mean it's kind of hard to imagine nato doing strikes without i mean nato pretty much is the u.s. predominately so when you think this will happen or do you think this will happen no i don't think we're going to see the united states or nato intervened let's cut through some of this double speak what this woman is really saying is that we're talking to our allies and friends specifically turkey turkey right now is approaching the point where by the end of september they will have one hundred thousand refugees from syria living in. absent turkey the turks have made it very clear they cannot take any more so we're talking about assisting them and supporting them to deal with these refugees but we are not going to intervene
6:11 pm
directly there's no appetite for it the united states it's an election year last thing anybody wants to be involved with hold on let me going off your point i want to play actually a clip from general wesley clark from that speech from two thousand and seven let's hear what he had to say it's really interesting. back to afghanistan i was pretty happy about that we showed up and then i came back to the pentagon about six weeks later i saw the same officer i said why why only attack iraq was still going to be said all the stories it's worse than that he said. he pulled up a piece of paper off his desk i just got this memo from the circular defense's office that says we're going to attack and destroy the governments and seven countries in five years we're going to start with iraq and then we're going to move to syria lebanon libya somalia sudan and iran so douglas i mean already you know he's talking about a classified memo that he saw weeks after the invasion of afghanistan i mean do you think i mean your your of political there is you know about game theory i mean is
6:12 pm
this something that we could possibly plan for a decade plus and that it's just a bad time with an election year and that we will inevitably see an intervention in syria i mean these countries that are going topple that you mention are first of all what wes clark said is true there were discussions at that point in the men we call them neo-cons collectively they were inspired to exploit the enormous advantage we had military power to effectively topple these regimes but it didn't happen it didn't happen largely because iraq went very badly and ultimately one of the regimes they wanted to topple which was the iranian one is now the dominant force in iraq so while that's interesting right now it's completely irrelevant and there's absolutely no danger of us embarking on any sort of strategy like that i think we've got to get back and understand the basics right now in syria it is turkey that has the principle interest we're talking to the turks and privately we've told them that if they go in on the ground and they go in on the air we will support them but we are absolutely not going to do it when you talk about the nato
6:13 pm
flies and your job by the u.s. for no fly zone our aircraft are worn out they need us you cannot deny that the rhetoric is very strong and we already have seen them taking out these regimes i mean you really can't deny that we've seen this happen time and time again with every we're ten years or ten years into this procedure. or not at all in the current political establishment they're not there right now he's talking about but i don't think you'll see it under him either all right well thank you for coming on and sharing your perspective ok colonel dennis the gregory. now if you like what you see so far go to our youtube channel at youtube dot com slash breaking the set and subscribe or go to our website or to dot com slash usa i know the nature of the internet is that hate is going to hate and troll is going to troll but if you're the more intelligent minded feel free to write me and let me know what you think also if you're wondering about what i'm doing when i'm not on air or bitching about follow me on twitter at abby martin and let me take a break from my preaching for now but stay tuned to hear the good and the bad when
6:15 pm
6:16 pm
a widely respected nobel peace prize winner has come out with a bold call saying that george w. bush and tony blair should be tried at the hague for their crimes against humanity now that man is desmond tutu a south african activist best known for his crusade against apartheid in a recent op ed piece he took aim at the countries and leaders who have most blatantly stood behind a veil of impunity he said quote the immorality of the u.s. and great britain's decision to invade in two thousand and three premised on the lie that iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction has destabilized and polarized the world to a greater extent than any other conflict in history and it's on these grounds alone he says that these men should be accountable at the hague the problem is the person in which we've been trusted the power to scrutinize such actions or to toss the issue under the rug take a listen. obviously you're looking at past practices. and i don't believe that
6:17 pm
anybody has both the law on the other hand i also have a belief that we need to look forward as lows as opposed to look looking backwards . then just like that president obama made the decision to not hold accountable the war criminals who undermine a true democracy and it's in that message that president obama codified and justified a united states that's above the law united states that can order any invasion or assassination at any time by letting leaders get away with their lies we are faced with desmond tutu's most profound question of all its leaders may lie and who should tell the truth that is the unanswered question of our time the question he implores us to consider because you see to do is a man who believes that the cancerous truth should not be kicked aside and buried and that is why doesn't to do former african anti-apartheid leader is our hero of the day so he's the hero and who is the villain well you may have heard about
6:18 pm
proposition thirty seven it's a proposed law in california ballot that would require the labeling of genetically modified foods great it's about time right i mean considering how to japan australia china and the entire european union already require labels on g.e. food but there is a serious dissent from asian campaign to try to deter this measure from passing it's called no on prop thirty seven and it's a slick astroturf front that describes itself as a coalition of family farmers grocers small businesses and food producers now there's already been ten million dollars poured into the opposition measured by chemical and processed food companies including the likes of coca-cola pepsi co nestle dupont and one santo the main spokes person behind this propaganda campaign a woman named kathy fairbanks look at she looks so innocent right in a recent interview she made a couple of interesting points she states prop thirty seven will increase costs for consumers by hundreds of dollars. god you know that's always the excuse to never do
6:19 pm
anything right i mean to cost money for consumers well these giant agro corporations make hundreds of billions of dollars annually so they have to incur a one time cost to change their packaging to reflect g.m. and variance and they pass it all on to us that's just one more reason to not support them kathy goes on to say that the f.d.a. has consistently said g.m.o. foods should not be labeled because the f.d.a. deems they're safe well that's easy to say when the f.d.a. doesn't even require testing of g.m.o. those i mean for god's sake.
6:21 pm
you know very good point we're not seeing it on the mainstream media if you click to another channel which i don't i'm not saying that should but i'm saying that if you do if you did if you were to look at the mainstream media right now there's no there's no coverage of these protests that are going on outside there's lots of police over two hundred police on bicycles lots of arrests made but we're not seeing any coverage on the mainstream about it i think it's going along the whole thing that transcends party lines i mean the crackdown against the sent the how
6:22 pm
hard it is to even dissent i mean the protest zones i mean occupy charlotte it took them almost a year to get it's very yeah it's very difficult even even in charlotte specifically to get these permits to protests and i think that the interesting thing is that not only is the mainstream media not covering this they're not covering the issues that a lot of these protesters care about which are a lot of the same issues that a lot of you know disenchanted and disheartened americans are concerned about yeah i mean let's talk about some of these the h r thirty three forty seven the federal restricted buildings and grounds and permit i mean it sounds somewhat nakia it's not really what does it have is there and i don't know is the dissent yeah it's actually it's the anti occupy bill and bills like h.r. three forty seven bills like the national defense authorization act these were bills that came in under president obama's administration and the last summit i spoke to michael o'brien who's the author of america's fail in iraq you made up of he made a really good point he said that if he would have gone into a coma prior to two thousand and eight and was just waking up now he would think that george bush was still in office now under the bush administration warrantless
6:23 pm
wiretapping became the law torture became the law and you know under obama i saw a continuation of guantanamo we saw the signing of the n.d.a. the signing of each are three forty seven so i think most of these protesters along with a lot of americans that are following this closely are most disheartened about is how president obama's administration has just not had a she's he's caught a fired the policies of bush administration i think a lot of people look at bush and they're like oh he's the puppet he has all these people behind him obama is a harvard law professor i mean he is. a lawyer he he knows the constitution so to for him to go out there and actually pass it in the n.b.a. and you know while everyone's drinking on new year's eve i mean i think that's what people are really waking up to but sure if people are waking up to this now which by the way to little late to wake up to this and are thinking that harvard lawyer obama would do a better job than harvard lawyer mitt romney i think that they're in for a for a big disappointment well thank you for coming on and sharing your thanks for
6:24 pm
having all ruffled. do you feel like you can't go anywhere without big brother watching you these days now it seems like every day i come across another element of the surveillance state creeping into our lives so on this show i am going to watch it brother now artie's been covering rap wire since of broke which is a massive data mining operation that pools advanced facial recognition from surveillance cameras nationwide and centralize it all to an undisclosed government database well another element of sweeping state surveillance is also emerging it's called automatic license plate recognition also known as tag readers right now the government is using hidden cameras in cities across the country to watch you around the clock your every day travels are being recorded and the years of your
6:25 pm
activities are being stored in a colossal data storage center that can be mined to find out where you've been where you're going and just exactly what you've been doing now just take a look at this example this is a shopping mall in connecticut with more than three point one million license plate scans were made by a group of ten different police departments i mean this is how extensive this operation is. now just check out this operational video for the automated license plate recognition program from andy i recognize and systems. for static system allows for specific areas of interest to be constantly monitor hits or matches against databases can be relayed to dispatch or directly to mobile law enforcement units to intercept the vehicle of interest. constant monitor is right and the cameras can be stationary or mounted on poles gates bridges hidden in traffic barrels or disguised as taxi signs and according the a.c.l.u. the system can catalogue three thousand license plates per minute and of course
6:26 pm
there's more information being collected than just license plates i mean think about it this can mean your driver's licenses your social security numbers or anything else that you have on record or recent for your requests already shows that the d.h. as is sharing this data with the national insurance crime bureau an organization made up of just about every insurance firm in the country office them more collusion between government and industry now the fourth amendment says that we probable cause for the government to be spying on us but we all know that in this day and age these rights are regularly violated and we only find out about these things much later through back channels for your requests and long legal struggles now if you are creeped out enough yet check this out originally this was developed by the u.k. to use against the ira then it was deployed in baghdad by the u.s. so basically more time spying technology to use against enemies and terrorists
6:27 pm
abroad is being applied right here against civilians in the united states and all of this tracking of drivers every move is being done to law abiding citizens without probable cause or even suspicion of having committed a crime and of course it's all happening without oversight or even public awareness of the program now a lot of people will say hey you have nothing to hide so why should i care that everywhere i drive is being tracked and data mining that's not the point this is the technology of social control and what privacy costs well the government there is no expectation of privacy in public anymore and since your car is public they can pretty much do anything that they want i guess the real question here is what else is going on that we don't. know about these great government agencies have an insatiable urge to use surveillance technology to eventually track and record everyone on the planet and they simply won't stop until they have everyone you know their thumb of control look i'm not going to sit back and let every bashing of
