one person was killed and another injured in quebec by government to open fire during the victory speech of the newly elected separatist premier at. the un accuses foreign nations of escalating the syrian conflict by supplying arms to all sides as fighting in the main cities forces thousands to flee. with barack obama pitching for reelection the u.s. tries to mend strain ties with beijing. as china warns washington to keep its nose out of asia pacific.
2:01 pm
online on screen international news and comment live from our new center here in moscow a forty year old man has been shot down at the separatist election victory rally in the canadian province of quebec one other person was injured and a suspect is being held by police the shooting interrupted the acceptance speech of premier pauline marois who was telling her supporters that quebec needs to become a sovereign country canadian radio journalist michael boyer said this will have consequences for an already divided society. it was where the victory speech was being held and. essentially was what they call the pac tea cake was that was elected that they had been in opposition for quite some time and they were elected as the minority government that's when when the leader was making her victory speech and she was hustled off the stage very quickly then we later learned
2:02 pm
from what we saw on cameras outside is that somebody was arrested somebody burst into the back of the building been shot somebody in the vestibule so one man died another injured and somebody else was taken to hospital for a shot at some very sad because as he was being hauled away into the cop cars that he had you know the english will are waking up and referring to you know the very defensive nature of if you have not taken a question you know there are years and years and years of confrontation about you know about the party and their ideas to separate back from the rest of the country and it's a very divisive topic and the fact that they were elected as a minority as many see it as a defeat and the threat. to come back and canada as a whole country the separatist party has said during the election campaign that they're not going to hold a referendum if the time is not right if that's not really what the population wants really what we're hearing is that it's only about twenty eight percent of the
2:03 pm
population that would affect the border referendum if we were to have one so it is it is relatively low comparison to what we've seen in the past lot of angle phones or our freedom is that they will see this as an attack from that the english on the french which you know certainly is the case you can take the actions of one person and spread it on thousands and thousands of people there is a certain fear that there will be more more anglo hatred in the province. independent journalist robert hahn and he believes the english and french speaking canadians will continue to grow it is strange to. it would be nice to believe that the man is just a lunatic it's pretty clear it is email be a lunatic but he is motivated by the divisions in canada one has to remember that divisions go both ways. because the english canadians under the british empire always ruled the roost the french canadians began to become very bitter about this and inevitably over time that has caused many problems and they want autonomy and
2:04 pm
i think that it is going to revive a passion of the way to put it that's putting in just a little bit emotional obviously it will and some english canadians feel very strongly about this of course to some french but i don't think the. it's going to change us long term view of that situation of quebec in canada tactically obviously she isn't going to want to stir up passions it in quebec one would certainly hope not well clearly the people who feel passionately that quebec should remain part of a canadian nation and never going to trust her because she lost her party at the believes in the maximum amount of autonomy so correct they can get a referendum through voting for independence at the moment and maybe in their hearts that's not really what they want but they have achieved the autonomy in
2:05 pm
language and in other things which has been very important to them i don't personally believe if you ask me what i really feel. complete independence is on the cards or go back but real autonomy yes definitely. there are more moves for independence over in europe and municipality in catalonia has reported to pertain its own tanami from spain central government can often a man's as a member of a right wing belgian political party of land bank which wants independence for flanders region from belgium he believes the calls for sovereignty come because people feel their very identity is under attack but are coming from the fact that almost always greater and larger entities try to abolish the. reality and languages the culture of cetera from people that are more normally should be independent or should have their sovereignty that they are all both
2:06 pm
always more and more abolished by greater entities like european union etc and it should be more modern in our view too to acknowledge that smaller entities are a better way to deal with things when people are not hurt by the authorities or by their government they try to get signals through elections and these signals to not be ignored and more if they are ignored for instance by the european union or any other entity well people in democratic elections will voice their the way they are treated by these institutions and this is that you should deal more with the realities and should not go on the way they are doing now. coming up in just a few minutes here in r.t. the pussy riot phenomenon we take a closer look at the motives and methods behind the fame and infamy of the controversial russian punk band. but first clashes between government troops and
2:07 pm
rebels are continuing in syria's largest city of aleppo with forces launching airstrikes on opposition fighters activists say violence there killed over one hundred people on monday with the free syrian army claiming to be winning the fight the syrian government insists will be no negotiations until security is achieved meanwhile a new york the un chief ban ki moon has blamed weapons suppliers to both sides of the conflict for spreading misery and turning it into a brutal war is more important as the details. the secretary general of the u.n. bonn ki-moon addressed the international body giving them an update on the crisis in syria saying the humanitarian circumstances situation there is only deteriorating and getting worse by the day according to the u.n. chief he said that the humanitarian response on the part of the u.n. is getting harder and harder because the response plan that the u.n. has set up is only half funded and it's supposed to be fully funded at one hundred
2:08 pm
eighty million dollars so he said as austerity measures are being implemented by countries all around the world less countries are donating to a mission that is supposed to be helping out those syrians in need now the general assembly was very interested in eager to hear from mr lockhart rahimi he is the new joint special representative for syria mr brahimi replaced kofi annan and he said when addressing the general assembly that it will be up to the syrians and only the syrians to decide the fate of their future mr brahimi will be traveling to cairo in the coming days to meet with the secretary general of the arab league and then he will be traveling to damascus to meet with syrian president bashar al assad so clearly he has his work cut out for him in the coming days and weeks ahead but of course syria is staying a priority within the united nations general assembly and the security council weeks we can expect for
2:09 pm
a lot of more conversations to be taking place in the month of september when the u.n. general assembly debate begins in the next coming weeks will lead to the military will be talking to a german join them is to is witness the conflict in syria first and. to explain to all to you why western media coverage of the civil war is deliberately misleading. the mainstream media coverage claimed that the mosque has is what at that time when this so-called battle of the mosque was there. saying that because it's on fire they're heavy fighting and they were saying that now the rebels are so close to the city center they are a power to conquer and all the city the government will fall i want to incite the city and there was no war in the city of course there is some suburbs there are a couple of interest groups who benefit from such a politics and the big interests of the western governments who want to have the regime change there and who are supporting that the information you get from these countries are very much one sided or money that i spoke to
2:10 pm
a lot of people who are not with the syrian government but and this is i think the most important difference to the media coverage here they were all against this war which is now raging so they said all of the we are not with our government right now we support our army in pushing back the foreign terrorists from our countries so then we can make the changes and the reforms. and that interview in full coming away a little later here on our team president vladimir putin has given our team exclusive interview his first since returning to power he was pushed for his views on the case of russian punk band pussy riot and three of its members were jailed for two years after staging a punk prayer in the country's main cathedral. in his first t.v. interview since his inauguration. i'm aware of the rights case but i'm not getting involved in any way. logically or putin speaks exclusively to r.t.
2:11 pm
. refuses to go away even weeks after three of its members that's because an old and controversial video involving the group has been unearthed. has the details. they are inherently of members of the our group and i'm talking about with you guys oh who seem to be concerned with making a political statement at least that's what they claim but they seem to be more concerned with the reaction that they get the message therefore becomes secondary and tertiary and the primary reason they're actually doing what they're doing seems to be to get a rise out of the public to get some sort of a provocative emotional response so this is exactly what the police and what the city right seem to have been doing for example one of course the latest on the loudest such performance was the punk prayer the so-called punk prayer the crisis where they were jumping out by the altar on the pulpit and yelling things which were rather press trained to the church of course three members off group with the
2:12 pm
right were convicted and sentenced to two years in prison now there was also another case which also made waves and was really kind of the considered provocative by a lot of russians but it's not so well known in the west this of course involves one of the members of the pussy riot group and you have to remember that there is almost a dozen girls and there one of the members performed a sexual act with a chicken that of course was rather provocative and wasn't quite clear what exactly they were trying to convey with that message that of course was also filmed and broadcast and also was supposed to carry some sort of a message and also there was a third incident which isn't so well known and russia or especially in the west and that was the incident in which just until a clinical one of those who work convicted of killing innocent and religious hatred and the crisis because these are all she was participating in that and one of the stunts where they staged a mob hanging and one of the supermarkets and moscow where they were hanging
2:13 pm
supposedly migrant workers and gays and you have to remember. it's the decision that wherever there's no reaction to the sentencing i'll just remember is that right. the public free means that whites played some believe that they shouldn't have gotten those two year prison sentences others believe that they got exactly what they asked for and that is popularity and punishment for doing things which are considered offensive by a lot of people because now of course all of the things considering pussy riot and much more will be covered in an explosive interview that russian president putin has given to our team of course you can watch that interview on thursday in america the democrats are trying to drum up support for barack obama's reelection in november the party's national convention in north carolina so far is an emotional speech from the first lady who praised her husband and called on americans to give him four more years in office well some of the other key democrats took to the floor to beat back criticism from republicans and responded with their own attacks
2:14 pm
on mitt romney and his camp the two candidates currently tied in the polls but one time they suggested the bomb had the lowest pre-convention ratings of any incumbent president since the 1980's let's get some reaction from peace activist and author david swanson. his approval rating slumped in recent months and mitt romney's finally caught up with him where did the incoming lead to go wrong. well that would take hours you know i would like to say that the american public has woken up to the numerous ways in which he's gone wrong and come to understand that he's serving the wealthy elite and the interests of the war makers and the bankers and the fossil fuel producers and so forth i think more likely the fact is that the republican campaign has big garden with the primary and now with the candidate. h. the electoral advertisements paid for with all of the endless money on the
2:15 pm
republican side have been making their way into people's brains through their television sets and what about the democrats claiming things are not better for america when. not the bomb was taken off is somewhat better than when he first started it is is that really the case i mean do they have a strong argument that. no of course it isn't the case the concentration of wealth has continued at a more rapid pace the destruction of the natural environment has continued at a more rapid based as has the erosion of our civil liberties and the code of fixation of what we're illicit abuses under bush imprisonment without trial spying without warrants we've now replaced imprisonment and torture largely with assassination which is actually not a moral improvement and things have not gotten better for people economically we have not improved we're moving in the wrong direction in terms of poverty and homelessness and foreclosure and and debt and so there's there's not really
2:16 pm
a case to be made to it unless it's that things have not gotten even worse in certain categories with the republicans make it any better well of course not neither one of these parties will make a dramatic shift to john do the so-called bush tax cuts that obama has kept in place. based to the end to ask the super wealthy and the corporations to pay their share to shift a massive you know a terry spending to education and environmental protection and so forth that's not in the interests of either of these parties unless the public rises up in a major way and compels them and it's going to have to do that independently and bring that force to bear on on both parties and the entire culture when the public rising up perhaps was creating another political party that would actually to the needs of all those who are wanting change in the states no absolutely not by
2:17 pm
creating an independent policy issue driven movement that imposes its demands on all of the parties we have of a completely broken system at this point in which to minorities have a monopoly on the airwaves on the baby on the money on access to having your name on the ballot there will be good candidates in the race and jill stein in particular will be on the ballot in a lot of states but that's a very very uphill fight and just ended ultimately is on a massive opulent movement that doesn't step out first and swear it's only agents to any party what we've seen a massive popular movement in the occupy wall street movement has that achieved and i think certainly it's achieved something it's a great beginning and it's begun to unify people who are upset around a whole array of related issues it's not nearly strong enough. gets communities system in place yeah we're dependent on
2:18 pm
a clear out corporate media cartel to get news to each other but we're working on it's building independent and social media and i think the occupy movement is a is a terrific started still needs to occur there integrate the anti military industrial complex movements but we're getting there. what's your prediction what would you think is going to win this david. you know it's not my business i think we have a deep moral obligation to speak in a in an all uncensored manner our demands to both of these parties i mean the democratic party the party of peace and justice says that iran must stop violating the nonproliferation treaty which it's not violating or we will militarily attack them you know we need not give our allegiance to either of these parties and voters can make a lesser evil choice when they vote but until that day and the next day after they need to be independent citizens pressuring this government not identifying
2:19 pm
themselves with one half of a corrupt government which is just deadly to to activism to just briefly you mention u.s. foreign policy that really the issue among voters isn't that job's at the moment and who have a comparable as a return to employment is going to get the vote on americans more interest in the domestic problems that at the moment. very much so but not entirely and to. boost the kids receive an extent americans are beginning to grasp that with over fifty percent of federal discretionary spending going into war reparation this is not an either or we can't set aside or involved deal with domestic issues well we're defunding in education and infrastructure and everything else to pay for war reparation we have to make a shift in priorities which is not in the platform sadly of either major party life in the u.s.
2:20 pm
peace activist and author david swanson great to talk to you thank you very much for your perspective on this thank you well the democrats have criticized mitt romney's for his vehement rhetorical against china rhetoric i should say against china as the bomb administration seeks to improve relations with beijing state secretary hillary clinton's in the chinese capital for talks but the cancellation of a meeting with the vice president presume next leader is being seen as a snub to clinton's visit comes amid rising diplomatic tensions beijing as warned washington to stay out of the country's territorial disputes with several other nations off the chinese coast the communist state has threatened to use force to defend its claims to a chain of evidence that clinton says america's position is neutral but beijing as cues to washington of meddling in the region's affairs dr helen cohn contributing editor for foreign policy in focus i spoke to him a little early here in r.t. he says china's need for energy is conflicting with the u.s. trade ambitions. one of the things the chinese are concerned about and i haven't
2:21 pm
they have legitimate concerns here is that eighty percent of the chinese imported oil and gas moves by sea and the fact is that the u.s. fifth fleet and u.s. seventh fleet controls basically all of the happy area that that gas and oil moves through so the chinese or to a certain extent paranoid maybe with a certain amount of real reason about their energy supplies obviously energy supplies are absolutely central to the chinese industry usually it is a competition going on here now it is mainly an economic competition and i think people forget that the pacific basin is the number one area for trade in economic development for the united states and has mentioned for almost the last one hundred years or so so you're going to get a lot of attention and particularly in the south china sea where the u.s.
2:22 pm
says it's neutral but has for did a number of the small countries that are currently in conflict with china over resources. french officials say two people have been injured in a chemical accident at the country's oldest nuclear power plant and it reports that a fire broken out at the pheasant hunting station were not confirmed professor christopher busby from the european committee on radiation risks has told me that french nuclear plants are of potential threats to all of europe the real problem is that in these situations the potential danger is that so that the moment so you can have a lot of small accidents a big problem and then suddenly you have one. of those that's the problem there is luck and good little growth it's all or nothing it's not efficient and it's not so and the problem is the unsafe. totally so that anything goes wrong seriously you're going to contaminate your. got in. the pressure of brussels oh no well of course
2:23 pm
all be solar equipment is old or all all of the labors of controls and pipes and so on although so of course the older the reactor the more chances of a problem but then the other problem there is in france is that a lot of the personnel who work at the reactors now are untrained people who go into eastern europe because there's an absolute shortage of very star the number of nuclear power stations that there are in france and the number of other nuclear sites that are in france makes france a ferrari problem. some other stories now making headlines around the world before we have the business update with marina a. former spy chief and confidant of colonel gadhafi has been arrested in libya after being extradited from mauritania he was detained in march in a joint operation with french intelligence in a more tanian apple is also sought by french authorities in the international criminal court for crimes against humanity. protests as

a reportedly clashed overnight with police in bahrain this after a civilian court upheld the military really found twenty opposition leaders guilty of plotting to overthrow the government program that against the ruling monarchy originated in febrile last year with police crackdowns allegedly leaving at least sixty people killed and scores arrested since. consult defense ministry says hundreds of soldiers have been a rest that was sacked for allegedly having connections to militia groups authorities have launched an investigation into so-called insider attacks in the country violence by men in afghan military uniform against foreign military personnel as escalated recently is thought that part of the taliban's tactics against nato. coming up to twenty five minutes past the hour here we go as promised business is with marina and joins us now business news next what's the latest now on the stage of the day well right now we're monitoring the american markets because they are the only ones straight on right now but i'd like to start with gas for because it's the major story of the day of course the
2:25 pm
european commission has launched an official investigation into the russian energy giant activities in europe and this comes just a year after brussels surprised at the company by unexpectedly breaking their offices now the e.u. is antitrust watchdog will focus on whether gas from pushed up prices and hindered competition in eastern and central europe gas from itself says it's prepared for the dialogue on the issue and reminds us the company is outside of the jurisdiction of brussels that investigation could result in heavy fines and require the company change its trade practices well i guess analyst alexander though believes the moments behind the move as europe's given call me. we should stand this simple fact that all interact so we were signed by gazprom and by all european countries which consume gas from gas they are the same now last year and five years ago so basically the price form of the gas price is the same the difference is the nominal
2:26 pm
price the last several years while price and gas prices linked to will increase. enormously quickly so basically the problem is that now gas prices are too high for starving european economy while five years ago when gas prices were low there were no problem at all. all right now let's turn our attention back to wall street as i said is the only one trader right now and there was sort of with that was a mixed picture of gains and right now it's back in that it's a tad sort of the dow flat and as i said in just the knowledge one company's shares are dropping is no five it's a thirteen percent to one point and that's after the release of its new flagship smartphone it comes with one of those charged in the bill it's that minimises blurry photos and many other great options for investors who are disappointed with
2:27 pm
nokia's choice over windows operating system it's not as popular as apple's aisle last or google's android and many application developers simply avoid it that's for the concerns of a future sales of the new lumia as popular apps ensure demand on smartphones. and a quick overview of our of their markets we have europe there who so i make spirit of course everyone is awaiting to hear what will happen tomorrow during the meeting of the european central bank thursday and then of course we have the currency the euro is still strengthening against the dollar when it comes to the ruble was so i'm mixed picture as investors here are waiting to see what will happen at the apec summit in russia as for east let's take a look at the russian of the markets and see what happened there a decline in oil prices means russian investors will really improvise and we saw that reflected in the figures both the r.t.s. and m i six shadow around the one the percent and this brings us up for this hour
2:28 pm
