tonight protesters stormed the u.s. embassy in yemen as the wave of fury spreads across the muslim world in response to a u.s. made film which mocks is less. stones and tear gas are exchanged between protesters and police in cairo as another anti u.s. demonstration descends into scenes of violence to injuring at least two hundred twenty people there. and president putin strongly condemns all attacks on u.s. diplomats but says governments must speak stream be cautious with people from the just feelings warning of the consequences of their lives.
2:01 pm
in a very good evening from moscow thanks for joining us here tonight it's now ten pm my name is kevin and we start with the news that protesters have attacked the u.s. embassy in the capital of yemen clashing with police who opened fire to disperse the mob two people were reportedly killed and several wounded in the clashes is the latest u.n. diplomatic mission to come under attack in response to the american film poking fun at his lab. off reports. turmoil in the arab world spread to yemen on thursday after hundreds possibly even thousands of protesters stormed the u.s. embassy in the capital there just two days after the american ambassador to libya was killed and protesters tried to take the embassy and cairo now when it comes to yemen witnesses on the ground reported live ammunition being shot by security forces into the air one reporter i spoke to actually said that there was an injury someone was injured in the head by one of those rounds falling from the air
2:02 pm
security forces also used tear gas and water cannons according to eyewitness reports we also heard that protesters were able to breach one of the outer perimeter of the american embassy there setting fires to vehicles before the setting fire to one building and also tearing down according to eyewitness reports a u.s. flag and replacing it with another flag there while it does seem that the situation has been more or less in control so far it really is an unstable sort of environment and we do know that aside from this this controversial video which really sparked the protests drone strikes in that country have really pitted the people versus u.s. foreign policy interests in yemen besides yemen we've seen protests erupt in in the gaza where protesters burned an american flag more or less peaceful protests in iran as well as protests in iraq on the topic of iraq we also had the leader of one of the leaders of an iraqi militia there saying that american interests in that country are. quite quite in danger or on the count of the film we've also
2:03 pm
seen a very popular in. posters twitter account of call for protesters to gather on thursday evening i'll side of the american embassy there so it remains to be seen how that situation will play out and of course the one to really watch is going to be afghanistan and we know that you tube has tried to block access to that video in afghanistan as well as in libya and egypt but if people really do catch on to this we could see some unprecedented levels of. islands this is according to some of the people some of the reporters that i've spoken to on the ground in kabul the libyan situation is a little bit different from the other countries where we've seen where of course the libyan protesters or the libyan people who are against the government of moammar gadhafi had really welcomed us intervention called western intervention to help them overthrow the former leader and they are by the situation in libya is really escalating in the sense that the u.s. president has promised to send a team of marines to the ground force the security situation there we've also heard
2:04 pm
that u.s. war destroyers are a naval war just going to be sent to that area supposedly to help with potential humanitarian assistance and evacuations of though of course that remains to be seen how that will work out and also reports of unmanned surveillance drones potentially being deployed according to president obama in libya to help them supposedly hunt down the people responsible for these attacks although it's really quite unclear how that's going to play out. when you say up to date on the latest uproar from across the muslim world before going to correspond to their own twitter or at least for us know. when a columnist for the boston globe or use life for either thanks for making the time to be with us. from rome to think you knew the u.s. ambassador to libya was killed in benghazi two nights ago so this is particularly painful time for you you know thought system going to his family and indeed his friends do you think christopher stevens and three other americans died just because of the controversial u.s. film or is the more reason for the hate driving the violence right now across the
2:05 pm
muslim world. well it seems clear that there are there was more at work people use that film as a pretext to attack the embassy i think chris was a very popular ambassador in libya i think you're seeing counter protests of libyans coming out with signs saying we're sorry saying that chris was a friend of ours and i think libyan people feel embarrassed about what happened and that some extremists used a video or use this terrible movie as either a distraction to to attack the embassy. this film that we're talking about was first posted on you tube back in july but it seems the reaction to is only servicing now so what are your thoughts about that do you think these violent acts we've witnessed over the last forty eight hours were orchestrated. well my understanding is that even though it was posted in english in july that the translation into arabic may have only come in recent weeks and
2:06 pm
a. news producer in egypt actually picked this up and started talking about it and therefore sparking protests across the region. of course it's a big time to reflect especially for you because because you knew the freedom of speech is a proud pillar of american life now disagrees with that but i wonder is that principle now bug firey do you think it may be allowing a growing trend of anti islam a behavior to emerge. you know i argued in my column yesterday that just because you're allowed to say something doesn't mean it's a good idea to do so and i've gotten some amount of backlash from american readers who said look freedom of speech is important and we have to stand up for it no matter what someone is saying i think the amount of lives and u.s. credibility and lead frankly money that this is costing us is really unacceptable
2:07 pm
and i compared it in my column to the pastor in florida who has a tiny church but he's still created a worldwide upper when he insisted upon burning the qur'an and just as americans were being held hostage by a small group of extremist people here in america i think when they put their views on you tube and now the technology is such that it can be seen all over the world i think people in egypt and libya and some of these places don't understand freedom of speech and they don't understand that this is not the view of most americans this is not the view of the u.s. government so it's really is a clash of cultures and it's a big big problem i want to washington can do now to rescue its reputation and the american sentiment it seems has been building in the muslim world ever since the so-called war on terror began eleven years ago what do you think washington can do if anything now. well i mean this just shows how powerless the white house really is when it comes to restraining freedom of speech. but the president himself could
2:08 pm
call up this pastor in florida and beg him not to burn the qur'an and the guy else to do it maybe it's a publicity stunt maybe the guy really believes he's doing the right think it just really shows the limits of what washington can do to restrain the some tiny minority of people who are simply doing something that's totally unacceptable and unhelpful and of course domestically where you are of selection time these attacks on u.s. missions are now being used as fodder in the war of words between barack obama and romney do you think the american voters greeted the response to the unrest by both candidates well how does what they've said about it. well i think i think some americans are disgusted by the way that this has been used as fodder in a political campaign whether you're republican or democrat when you're in egypt and it's nine eleven and we should all be standing together and the idea of attacking
2:09 pm
the u.s. president for. you know is and statement that came out of the cairo embassy which was simply appealing for religious tolerance it's very strange i can't say how this is playing a more conservative parts of the country but in massachusetts where i am which is pretty liberal i think a lot of people were taken aback by that i mean this is nine eleven why should we be attacking the u.s. president for a pretty benign response to something that happened it was an attack on our our our it was one of the darkest days for us foreign service and an american story and we should be standing together not not attacking each other for we appreciate you being on the internet of things that was so much for us talk one columnist for the boston globe them thanks for having me. tell me carro focus on there where
2:10 pm
the first protests of course are the series of anti american riots flared up demonstrations evolved into heavy clashes with police authorities would try to drive protesters away from the u.s. embassy with buttons and to gas but they've met fierce resistance over two hundred twenty people have been injured so far now belle dru's a local journalist who's at the scene she's reporting from the egyptian capital for us. people are extremely angry that the demographic of the group seems to have changed slightly from cheese day which is a very sort of ultra conservative islamist group and this seems to be younger possibly football fans the football fans is not yet confirmed the police have cordoned off the whole area the whole street near the us and the c. sections towards tahir and basically just trying to secure the area and attacking protesters and like to take us to mean i mean i don't think this protest has any has any signs of actually stopping we know we've got a different protest organized on friday actually called for by the missing brotherhood against this particular film which seems to have inflamed people in the
2:11 pm
middle east and other moment i can't really see any signs of stopping because now people are upset with the way the police have dealt with the matter because of the levels of violence there has been a fair amount of criticism of morsi recently because he actually didn't make any official statements about the deaths of the u.s. ambassador in libya yesterday and was very slow on the uptake in regards to that people are asking him really to come home and maybe sort out the situation here as the violence escalates but so far he really hasn't done that much other than asking people for to peacefully protest and continuing along with his his jobs in the u.s. government had no took no part in the making of this film is obscure film which people take days to work out where it's really coming from i'm not even sure an apology from the u.s. government like people are asking for would really stop the protests right now because it seems to escalate into a police versus protest fight some people if they're angry with the way the piece is still using the same tactics when the minute you were in power as they are now with supposedly civilian government really i'm not really sure how this is going to
2:12 pm
come down particularly with continued protests in yemen as well as across the middle east towards this film. president putin strongly condemned the killing of u.s. ambassador in libya he said governments must speak streaming cautious when dealing with religious sensitivity is a correspondent in office more on the russian leaders reaction. president putin condemns the murder of the u.s. ambassador in libya saying that it's very troubling when diplomats are killed since they're supposed to be protected by international law and he said how important it is for everyone to unite in the fight against extremism but at the same time i didn't put inside that is the responsibility of every state in government to protect the feelings of the leaders of all the religions from being offended. if your story doesn't react in a timely and tough manner to provocations that are directed against the religious feelings of people then what happens is that the humiliated and insulted ones are started to defend their own interests but sometimes this can take unacceptable
2:13 pm
forms and even force people to use unacceptable methods we feel the region can fall into chaos which is exactly what's happening now in this respect i'd like to remind the rulers of these new governments and states that underwent serious changes that they should not forget their personal responsibility for what's going on in their territories. we've also heard from the u.s. state secretary hillary clinton the condemns the film the controversial film which has caused the first wave of violence at the same time she said that the us government will never stop its citizens from voicing their personal views no matter how disgusting or anti stall they are in the meantime a fuse discussion has started in the internet where is the line between freedom of speech and responsibility since clearly just one move by either one person or a small group of people kill you two massive and sometimes even dreadful consequences. at r.t.

dot com we're closely monitoring the violent protests for you sparked in the arab world by that and his like american film there you'll find updates on the demonstrations the international reaction to the violence along with the latest videos where those protests i'm going. there's outrage in a stone over a mock advertisement showing i'm a she hated prisoners at a concentration camp the magazine that published it says the ad is just a joke but as alexia's esky reports the country's got a record of elevating its nazi past. a prank which went terribly wrong in a story a newspaper s.t. express posted a picture of prisoners of a nazi death camp book involved with a text one two three dr mengele spills will do wonders for you there were no fat men in book involve this reference to a man who was responsible for more than forty thousand deaths in nine hundred forty

s. nazi death camps certainly has caused uproar both in the stone here and abroad with the local jewish community and simon wiesenthal center both accusing the newspaper off of making a joke out of a huge tragedy and a massive loss of human lives the newspaper itself tried to justify this picture by saying that this was simply a joke in response to an earlier incident when a gas heating company in a stoney a posted a picture off at the entrance to another nazi death camp auschwitz with an advertisement of the heating system saying that their heating systems were reliable and very efficient many experts and political analysts have been very critical of the fact that such things happen in a more than democratic state a member of the european union and this prank by the newspaper and the advertisement by the gas company forced the country's foreign minister to bring his

apologies for those incidents he said that he felt very ashamed to be a stony and if his country's newspapers allow themselves such jokes with the use of the human tragedy still many have been questioning how sincere those apologies were because as tony has a record of dealing with the events of the past and particularly with nazis and in his own way several of the veterans who were fighting alongside the not situated in the 1940's in the so-called baltic legion were made national heroes in the story after the collapse of the soviet union so this latest incident. certainly adds more fuel to the fire in this ongoing story of how the post soviet baltic states have been dealing with naziism and have been dealing with the perception of the past this incident this latest incident also caused indignation from the russian foreign ministry which said that this again shows how some at power in the stony and some

a rethink. looks inevitable reports now the european crisis has affected the campaign period it really brought out a lot of voters sentiments that were unexpected when it comes to the dutch dutch people who are generally very pro european now we've seen in the past weeks before the final week of campaigning that socialists have made a huge jump at some point even the leading the front of the liberals and of the labor party however having said that a lot of observers do the fact that the dutch again are very practical people and have traditionally been centrist voters and they did vote that center left and center right parties the labor and the liberal party and the prime minister margaret are having said that though the fact that the campaign has brought out a lot of voter sentiment that didn't exist before having centrist government right now does not mean that those questions on whether they should keep helping the greeks for example or whether it should continue the way it has been in konya fashion following the german lead to plan for europe those questions will not just

go away given even if they still have a centrist government right now so i think what will happen here is the most logical is that the labor and liberal which is the top two and biggest parties here will my former coalition in this sense it's only a practical however the question is there are differences in their approach to europe should they give more money to greece or should they follow the three percent of cuts drastic draconian fashion these are points that will definitely have disagreements and stability there is questionable and therefore the dutch may find it a coalition government formed quite quickly but whether it will last longer than the previous government well that is still an open question. well there was my news stories now this hour the un's envoy to syria is in damascus he will meet president assad and his first peace mission to the country like deborah he hopes to make inroads in ending the conflict but it's a task he's already considered as being almost impossible violence is growing in syria's largest city aleppo too with the latest battle erupted near the city's
