so it's wizardry it's medieval witchcraft it's it's not medicine so we should not use terms such as pills which suggests that there is a science behind this and a modern application of knowledge in science it's just it's just not medicine at all as an analogy if you start to see such a deeply destructive paul the scene why is it being used in the first place well there's really a couple of chief reasons for this number one it's an idea that people are just very comfortable with especially in northern europe it's kind of like a protestant morality play that we're seeing played out here so the idea that you can fix one's economy through these kind of austere measures which force one to be thrifty not praful get sounds very good to most people in northern europe and it just resonates with their protestant world view and of course that's how you run a household in terms of its economics if you get yourself into debt you don't just
8:31 pm
go out and continue to spend freely you actually cut back in terms of your expenditures but this does not work when running in an economy the other answer is just very quickly because it's very important just make it interest so in other words this also works in the interest at least in the short term of banks and they're very powerful ok what i'll turn it is do you suggest well the alternatives are as thoughts we need to re invision an economy that actually has real productive investment austerity policies do not generate this. any economy over the long term will be starved and will ultimately crumble if it does not have investment these austerity policies are not generating investment capital i mean all they're doing is actually cutting consumption and thoughts by doing so sending very negative signals to private venture capitalists regarding the prospects for future demand and those signals are. you shouldn't be investing in the real economy because
8:32 pm
there's not going to be demand in the future so we need to have an economy which is reorganized towards the goal of real investment in production and governments can take the lead in that process both directly through spending but also in terms of tax policy and the signals at their son to the private sector in terms of investment you're critical office tower it's a naturist introduced in latvia but still christine lagarde has recently said let's be easy inspiration for european leaders grappling with the euro crisis how do you respond to that well christine legarde and the i.m.f. generally and the pundits who have been supporting austerity as the proper solution for what ails the world's economies have been desperately seeking a success story and they think they have finally found one in latvia so we have all of these failures and there are some aspects of the latvian austerity story that
8:33 pm
one could read as a success we do have a return to economic growth after seeing this really huge collapse which occurred in two thousand and eight but of course there are big problems as well my short answer is that it's ideological they need an example that says we can pursue austerity as a solution for those economies who are seeing significant both public and private debt levels once a series is introduced how to shift from it and towards what's it's very difficult if you have to adhere to article one twenty three of the european union agreement or charter which says that you no longer have currency autonomy the best thing that you can do is actually to. retain your own currency and then to begin creating credit as governments can do and then to begin using that credit to invest in real enterprises which will produce real goods which will. in turn produce revenues
8:34 pm
which will in turn produce social services a year ago and glenn marko famously sat either you're a famous you have to win the thing you do still see that's coming it's too early to tell and of course everyone likes to ask this question it's a good question it's an important question but it depends just how much germany is willing to put into saving the euro project. increasingly it seems as though they're willing to invest a lot in order to save the euro project so i wouldn't bet on its demise in the short term but it's difficult to say of course what the future will bring us back in the euro zone survive though we can record these on board for example greece. you know this question is a very complicated one and in the euro zone one in the european union we need to think about what its purpose is. if its purpose is to have economic integration. it would be a very very big blow if the euro zone of course failed although you can still have
8:35 pm
trade agreements which facilitate trade between member countries without having a single currency in some respects the euro has actually prevented increased economic sustainable integration and it's done this of course through creating all of these problems of the periphery countries of the european union so in some respects it's again preventing the kind of sustainable integration of european economies and in effect. as many of the critics predicted at the outset you just cannot have this significant level of inequality in terms of the size of both incomes within countries and their total economic output within a currency union so. the project is is developing as its critics had anticipated problems monson in the banking industry especially in
8:36 pm
countries like spain how do we see moments in the eurozone when it's quite possible of course because in the european union they haven't cleaned up their banking system at all and in fact in the sun's it's actually worse than the united states and they might have a larger crisis it's again too early to tell but the conditions are in place for a very big big crisis the united states. actually purged its system of many of its bad banks something that europe has not done at all so it's possible all right but where do you see the euro in the years time. again a very very difficult question. i think the euro is still going to exist i don't think there will be a dissolution of the euro zone. and i would only give even odds on the greeks actually retreating from the euro zone. people are very psychologically invested in the side dhea that the euro is the only
8:37 pm
path towards stability in the future i mean even in a country like greece which has been so hard hit by the crisis people are even more fearful of retreating from the eurozone because they feel that their savings will be wiped out that their pensions will no longer be viable that there are health care system will lose even further access to the capital that's required to purchase the medicines in the technologies that are needed so there's a lot of fear and very legitimately so so. i can't see the system just unraveling without some kind of large external shock which can always come i mean we never know but it would take a large external shock yet to bring the system down on the other side of the ocean the u.s. federal reserve has embarked on a new round of quantitative easing how much inflation does the u.s. exports won't winds well as you may know i mean the united states has been exporting inflation since the one nine hundred seventy s.
8:38 pm
i mean this is how it's traditionally dealt with its economic problems and so in effect we're seeing some consistency in terms of policy yes some of the united states is exporting inflation and it's causing commodity prices to be higher than they otherwise would be as all of this money as you know which has been created is racing into commodity markets it's difficult to put an actual figure on the amount of. inflation that we see in the entire economy as a whole it doesn't seem to be impacting general rates of inflation that much it just seems to be tired. getting commodities and in effect kind of balancing the deflation that we're seeing in other areas of the economy so it's. it's not as dangerous as the critics predicted it would be so right from the outset i mean now we're on want to tate of easing. number three right and so with the first set of quantitative easing it was predicted that this would generate massive inflation and
8:39 pm
it did not not not that it's generating no inflation it's just not massive so it is not a fact in the eurozone i don't think so and i think i think if anything the european union is now moving in this direction it's saying that it needs to do something along these lines of course a very poor solution for dealing with economic crisis it's marginally better than doing nothing but there are better solutions and the better solutions are keynesian demand side solutions where the government actually spends heavily on infrastructure creates demand within the economy which then leads to increased investment in production and improvement of the overall economic environment i mean this is a classic case of what john maynard keynes called pushing on a string i mean you can just keep feeding money to the bankers given all of these once you do well daria on one level what we need to see of course are a whole new set of policies that will actually reintroduce demand into the economy now winston churchill used to like to say of the united states that the united
8:40 pm
states always did the right thing and then he would pause for a long period of time and say after they have exhausted all other options now i think with both the european union and the united states we're coming very very close to the realization that we've exhausted all of the bad options if we may finally return to the kind of classical keynesian solutions which were applied to the crisis of the one nine hundred thirty s. that may actually bring us out and that's my great hope so we really need to hope that we are finally at a point where we understand the. the solutions that have been applied thus far have not worked. in japan the average height for men is one hundred eighty two centimeters ten centimeters shorter because of that some employers refused to hire me one of them
