7:30 pm
and. the and. the and. the and. it's friday ready to rumble joining me for tonight's big picture rumbalara anthony home republican strategist and author of the new book fifty two reasons not to vote for obama lose chatter to democratic strategist and president of the chattering group and brian darling senior fellow for government studies at the heritage
7:31 pm
foundation great to have you all with us tonight thank you for joining us. last night romney campaign co-chair not just a shill for the party the co-chair of the romney campaign john sununu was interviewed by c.n.n.'s piers morgan morgan asked him about the news that colin powell had endorsed president obama take a listen to what's in his response was. when you take a look at colin powell you have to wonder with events in the endorsement based on issues or whether he's got a slightly different reason for preferred president obama what reason would that be well i think when you have somebody of your road race that you're proud of be president of the united states i applaud colin for standing with the. guardian sununu no way colin powell could endorse president obama on merit or policy positions now it's because they're both african-american and sununu has a history of making racially charged remarks about the president he's called a foreign he's called an un-american he's called him
7:32 pm
a lazy idiot he said we're not that bright you can't get better prepared he the sacrifices the dignity of the presidency for cool i mean this is this is really extraordinary is this what we've come to an american anthony this being that we've come to that we can't talk about race in the likelihood of someone we can't voting today we're not in the crash that the president made on his race we have been saying of this is a transformational election that african we elected our first african-american but we can't suggest that people are voting perhaps not because of policy but because he's an african-american let's flip it stacey dash african-american actress who came. endorsed romney she got hit on twitter you're you're abandoning your race kill yourself top to bottom so this is a she is so right heard as i don't know i know nothing about their case i can't speak about it but erica when i hear the co-chair of the romney campaign saying obama doesn't understand the american system because he spent his early years in indonesia he's friends or others on the indonesian and but that doesn't mean he
7:33 pm
doesn't understand how to be an american and he's been warning that you know there's john sununu making a subjective opinion this is this is i was you know doesn't understand the tax code or the debt structure since we just had six trillion in new debt in less than four years ago as w. bush's tax cuts to two wars he put on that are going to put him absolutely it was the deficit was jump in here well listen you know do i think that racism is the new norm in the republican party no but do i see old norman started with richard nixon's southern strategy but i do but i will say do i think that we have seen the republicans say some extraordinarily stupid things this year absolutely i am coulter called the president a retard i mean are you kidding me i mean in in the entire time that george w. bush was president now one democratic analyst ever said anything like that about him we may have thought it but we certainly never said it on television you've got todd akin talking about legitimate rape i mean i have been in this business for fifteen years i've never seen the republicans make as many stupid comments as
7:34 pm
they've made this year and i think this is just yet another stupid comment so do i think racism is now i know i think stupidity may be new but i don't really think it's racism necessarily and this is not an extension of richard nixon so the strategy let's bring the white racism to the republican already works so well well i mean what city did ronald reagan give his first speech in when he was a kid an official candidate for president i don't know you honestly don't know you know first speech but wait do any of you know i do not i don't i thought this was like you know american history want to one philadelphia mississippi a little town of six thousand and seven. people the city where three civil rights workers were murdered he went all the way down to mississippi to a little town one hundred fifty miles from the nearest airport to give his first speech running for president about state's rights to the town where the three civil rights workers were murdered and it was his and it was the speech about civil rights it was ronald's worried in some way of saying yeah we're going to we're going to do this on the strategy next and so the strategy on steroids is still go
7:35 pm
the dog whistle politics to the left all republicans are racist we heard it from joe biden when i was in the news racism i'm not saying that good and i'm not saying the senator was a racist i'm saying he's calling out to the races that's that's simply not true i mean you think there's a concerted effort on the part of mitt romney's campaign to reach out to racists to get them to vote for him yes you're crazy every little slice and first of all i don't think john sununu what he said was approved i think he just went off half cocked on why he come back time and time again he's the co-chair of the camp right he's the guy who approves things right so you know there's are there is brad to this is such a lie a lie you say the romney is so stupid that he has moral chair of his campaign if say him do what you're doing right now you're implying that all republicans are racist i don't know i mean they're using race as you're saying that the romney campaign is explicitly using race yes to win this election yes you're wrong i don't think that's true and i think it's outrageous i do more than the news media to make a show and if he wanted out the ny newspapers were to say i think the private
7:36 pm
americans are voting for barack obama and their number one reason is because he's black and sununu went on national television he spoke about it and now you're trying to call him a racist i think it's absurd all races all republicans are a whole and how old his colleague or you may not align with brock obama obama is not calling out using a racial language you may use your name he is not in there you wasn't going to be there you know mark says even though he's been very very very large percentage you're a larger percentage of white people are voting for the white guy and going to mitt romney no matter doesn't mean that doesn't make all of them raised allies it doesn't make him at least see that my dad why it's laying race he absolutely so. bama is why i am here because my mother my mother playing race was born with a maid that marty was born three years prior of course he is absolutely trying to call republicans raise so so we've gone from john sununu using dog whistle politics to proof that the president obama is using race to try and win an election you were used to trying to use race to win the election because you try to call republicans
7:37 pm
race of course i never said i was a racist i say there are probably can party has a history since richard nixon made it explicit in one thousand nine hundred seventy two that they were going to reach out to the racists the george wallace had left behind bobby byrd was a republican or democrat member former member of the klu klux klan and he was a republican at that time he changed parties and he left the klan. in any case actually he was a democrat when it was going to you know your way another c.e.o. is warning his employees that there will be consequences if mitt romney loses mark white is the owner of the industrial equipment firm right height and he recently sent an e-mail to his fourteen hundred employees cautioning them that should barack obama win second term that he'll have to drop the company's contributions to employee retirement funds he also warned there's a good chance employees would lose their health care should president obama win ever since mitt romney was caught telling a national federation of independent businesses to tell their employees for whom they should vote several c.e.o.'s have done just that including the koch brothers
7:38 pm
where is the senate daylong seminars in the future they do this like with the union busting you know all right you guys all my employees have to come and sit in this room for eight hours and listen to this pitch because you're being paid by me so you get to listen to this this was against the law until citizens united it was explicitly against the law for an employer to use the threat of loss of employment or the carrot of here's a paycheck to promote a political message how can this be right brenda from my reading is it was an educational you milly sent to his employees saying hey if you vote for barack obama you're voting to raise your own taxes you're going to vote to force me to get rid of your pension. bad things are going to happen if the government takes a higher percentage of my money and if you lock them in a room for a whole day with with you or with. the list goes the anybody i mean or if a democratic you know if george soros locks all his employees in a room and says you voters you know here's water twenty two things you have to sit
7:39 pm
here for two days and you think that's ok. well i don't really locked in a room i thought that was just a logical extension of what's going to really look like look here's what's going on employers are going out there and saying our economy is falling apart we're nine million jobs behind where it's not a president or said we have four years in a row a trillion dollar deficit we have one more year and we have tax hikes waiting in a new term you need to understand that our economy is going to be disturbed and we are going to have with any of those it goes out the rassmann at work he was sacked which is wrong about this is so someone goes to work and they're doing their job their mind their own business it doesn't matter what their politics are or who they're going to vote for and their boss says them an e-mail on company time and tells them you're going to lose your health care if you don't vote for mitt romney that's whole ras mitt it should be illegal it is going to go through the legal it is one of the things that citizens united did that i really think is in many ways completely blurred the line between private and political lives in this country and
7:40 pm
it's flat out harassment you can no longer come to my desk and touch my shoulder and hit any kind of sexual harassment so why can my boss harass me about my politics or should we do now the debate that is harassment or not which i don't agree with at all or would you do a bait that you're going to have a job or not and you need to have a job we have pending tax increases we have a terrible economic it was as if he was already at your local bar you're good on real not allowed a lot of jobs you know you're ready to go and just say let's let's just stipulate on the board let's just stipulate something here had he sent a letter out saying that if taxes go up on this. corp by more than twelve percent we've done the math and with we found that we'll have to reduce wages by one percent something just you know simple there or you know there's a piece of legislation before congress that's going to affect our company i don't think we'd be having this fight but instead he said if you vote for this guy this you know bad things will happen if you vote for this guy good things are going to
7:41 pm
happen without any evidence so you don't have a problem communicating information to them you have a problem vote for a vote for again so i actually take it farther not just employees the unemployed need to know that taxes are going up the deficit is going to grow i think we already know you're going to do you have a crystal ball that the deficits going up i mean you just know that because if you do the years they don't want you to know that i was going down in a different order we have really four years and we don't have a clue what to do that was i don't want to do when i was pretty. well you talk over each other nobody can understand it or anybody is saying so this administration doesn't have clean hands i mean they refuse to send out notices to employees of the defense department that they may be losing their job because they're not going to see sequence variation is not going to. will happen if nothing so you congress doesn't come back the lame duck it happens that's wrong that's not true it tells the kick no no i didn't say it is it is not true it sets it up for the next quarter and congress can come back two weeks into the for into the end of the new year and they can pass a law that retroactive january first and no sequence. will because all republicans
7:42 pm
and democrats neither one of them want those cuts that's crystal ball theory we just i want to just camp because i want to turn boehner says that's what that's where a lot of sequester go right into effect and the law and even to know that you have a scene where you have people notice and they're violating the law and why don't you try to be a very very serious problems you're the house came up with the idea and make sure it passed not according to bob but first two years of congress house and senate president all controlled by d.c. that everything is or no not at all but i want to know if that is how sound is all right how were majority you know by straight on was passed under john boehner speakership first two years of my time or a snow. i'm not sure you are very similar john but there's an idea just that it's fact just under your right eye was but beyond that this this lie that the democrats controlled the senate for two years blows my mind yet sixty two months and one day until until scott brown was sworn into the seventy nine is not control there there was no immigration reform going on for two months and one year day the president had a full time to enrich senate for two months and wanted
7:43 pm
a the rest of his presidency here we read i had only read it to be as a filibuster my imaginary read in las vegas two weeks ago he said you know lyndon johnson for six years exact same amount of time harry reid has been speaker democratic leader of the of the senate you know how many filibusters harry reid has handled over three hundred seventy but you know how many of those you know you know how many filibusters lyndon johnson had during his six years and that was during a very dear and everybody else arm of the filibuster and everybody else transparent to arnie and says you're going to kill the democratic rules are totally different now than they were back then democrats will never have sixty more rowboats in the next four years are you saying that obama can't.
7:44 pm
governor romney and i are we both agree we agree we have to bring the tax rates down i felt the same as the president did governor romney i'm glad. you agree but let's come back to something the president i agree on and then to you agree that the voters have a choice going up so soon you may be wondering who to vote for when romney and obama agree on so many things remember you do have other options come november sixth tuned in to see the second round of debates between the major third party candidates on october thirtieth. here was mitt romney trying to figure out the name of that thing that many
7:45 pm
americans call a donor. i'm sorry i'm just a guy who cares an awful lot of money comes from you sir are a fool you know what that is my terror cells in your neighborhood all want the usa to defeat terrorism he only lived all the christian point you. can secure the surface of the snow so for me to distract us from what you and i should care about because there are profit driven industry that sells a sensationalistic garbage he calls it breaking news i'm not me martin and we're going to break this that it's. ok. back to the big picture rumble joining me are anthony home brian darling liz
7:46 pm
chatterton should have been different order but i think we all figured out ok conoco phillips the oil giant and ninth largest company in the world's second largest oil company the united states announced yesterday that it made one point eight billion dollars not for the year but for the last three months in fact their income for the year seven billion dollars is profit not revenue profit what's left over after after everything despite making a staggering seven billion dollars this year the company still gets an average six hundred million dollars in tax breaks every year from the federal government this whopping tax break has allowed conoco phillips i shouldn't just a lot of actual arguably have paid for you and i with our taxes paid for the twenty million dollars that conoco phillips spent lobbying congress buying people like paul ryan six hundred dollars bottles of wine so isn't this the reason that corporations have too much influence in politics should a company making seven billion dollars really get a six hundred million dollar tax break lose no i mean this is just a little bit and it's absolutely not i mean what's amazing to me about this is that
7:47 pm
we're arguing over whether or not we give welfare checks or any type of assistance to people who make eight dollars and ninety cents an hour but will give six hundred million dollars in tax breaks to a company that made seven billion and yet the republican sit there and say we're not owned by corporations we don't support the wealthy in this country that's completely untrue there is nothing good about what's happening with conoco phillips nothing there's a seven billion of profits six hundred million in tax breaks is criminal a simple statistic brian the amount of money welfare money that is given to corporations every year by our government is twice the amount of welfare money that is given to humans now i hear paul ryan and his budget screaming about. he gave a speech about the various say let's start cutting all this welfare to these humans because it desensitizes them but not a word about twice as much welfare going to conoco phillips and their buddies and let's get rid of corporate welfare and no more bailing out wall street no more bailing out the u.a.w. with the auto it will be a wall street dodd frank put that in the not true we're going to still on the hook
7:48 pm
it is at no it we are not here just because it says in law you can't do it doesn't mean that the fed does not other authorities would make a bill of austria ok you're going to ignore the way when tax credit i'd love to get rid of ethanol mandates get out of the law those are giveaways to those are corporate giveaways so do you think ford import maybe let me ask you a question that a serious question if you're so if you're genuinely serious about this bernie sanders proposed some years ago i don't know if it ever made it into legislation we were talking about on the air that you know we've got so many companies around the country were states where miss palliser counties are fighting to get a factory or a headquarters that they say ok we'll give you a two hundred million dollars tax break now we'll give you a four hundred million tax you know boeing famously did this when they played three cities off each other bernie said any state that allows this to happen in their state should lose federal highway dollars would you support yeah ok i don't i don't believe in federal highway dollars going to anybody. for the well you know my position we should have zero deductions in the tax code that is government we
7:49 pm
should be giving has so you know i'm going to go in there we shouldn't be giving discounts to go if you don't want to incentivize savings that that is not you don't you don't you know you don't want to incentivize homeownership we should not give deductions everything needed people will go out and buy or not buy on their face we shouldn't allow corporations to go and cozy up to congress and they do it on both sides of the aisle cylinder the never we never should've think it carve out deduction we never should help create the in warren buffett should not be paying seventeen percent we should have fairness across the i mean romney should not be paying fourteen either one of them we should have a uniform tax for as low as ten seconds and there's no warren buffett and mitt romney should be paying fifty percent and anybody making less. and fifty thousand dollars should be paying nothing they aren't and the bottom line is without the omega man what they really aren't saying here is that they just don't believe in government period last question it's way through our hurricane sandy is bearing down on the northeast and weather experts are saying it's a storm on president of the nature could affect sixty six million people just ahead
7:50 pm
of the election so the question is this if sandy knocks out the power to evoke the machines and swing states like pennsylvania new hampshire how will the oligarchy steal the election brian it's going to be tough for you guys to claim voter fraud if all the. if at all has she just given out or i'm more worried about hurricane obama and what he's doing to the economy. well that's a vein in new hampshire are not swing states are solidly in the blue corner and they're absolutely obama the only state that i would in any way shape or form be worried about possibly virginia maybe florida but the bottom line here is voting is going to go just fine this is going to be gone by election day and romney is going to win hurricane or not i mean this is just all there is to it all the trends are that way of course the president is very much in play in wisconsin ohio as well we'll see how this plays out i think we should do like ireland did and so all our voting machines for scrap metal and that he was brian thank you for being with us today thank you thank you.
7:51 pm
ten years from now we will all look back at this upcoming election and will realize that it was here that the progressive wave of reform that surged forward at the turn of the twentieth century and made life better for billions of people in this nation over the last hundred years finally broke and receded backward into the abyss will realize that it was here when the original corporatists like the duponts of the morgans and today's corporatist like the coax finally won their ruthless century old struggle against progressivism gives equal economic opportunity. for all and his equal civil rights for all who reside in a nation where the old are no longer cared for with social security and medicare or the impoverished young are no longer cared for with medicaid and food assistance where women will again be forced into back alleys for coathanger abortions or minorities will begin to be relegated to second class citizenship or working people
7:52 pm
will again fall into indentured servitude without protections like a minimum wage and collective bargaining where our democratic institutions are so hollowed out by corporate money that they are completely unresponsive to we the people and will reside in this neo feudal state run by twenty first century robber barons all because we let when net romney win the white house in two thousand and twelve and we let him hand pick a new crop of conservative corporatist supreme court justices to reign over the united states for at least the next generation since eight hundred three when marbury vs madison gave rise to judicial review the us supreme court which was intended to be the third and least harmful of three co-equal branches of government has risen to be the ultimate authority in our government today we have nine unelected kings and queens able to create completely new laws were struck down all laws passed by congress by we the people and signed by a president elected by we the people like the oracle of delphi the supreme court
7:53 pm
has been the final arbiter time and time again over which direction this nation moves in and today with the conservative movement more emboldened than ever to undo the new deal redefine the general welfare clause in our constitution and reverse social policy back after century in the upcoming years it may again be the high court that will have the final say in this ideological struggle and the ideology that controls that court is going to win the struggle on the left justice ruth bader ginsburg seventy nine years old justice stephen brier seventy four years old on the right justice antonin scalia seventy six years old. as is justice anthony kennedy one two maybe all four of these justices will be retiring during the next presidential administration and it will be up to either barack obama or mitt romney to pick their successors but the president is reelected will get more justices like alina kagan and sonia sotomayor who still believe that progressive reforms like
7:54 pm
social security and medicare are constitutional they still believe the child labor laws and the minimum wage are constitutional they still believe in a woman's right to choose if mitt romney is elected we'll get justices like clarence thomas and antonin scalia who both believe all those progressive reforms just mentioned are unconstitutional and should be overturned immediately worse we'll get justices recommended by robert bork bork was reagan's nominee to the supreme court in one thousand nine hundred seventy but he was rejected by the senate because of his radical beliefs today bork is mitt romney's constitutional advisor his judicial nominees superstar adviser back in one thousand nine hundred seven at the time aborts nomination the late senator ted kennedy took to the floor of the united states senate to talk about robert bork's grim vision of america robert bork's america is
7:55 pm
a land in which women would be forced into back out of abortions blacks which sit at segregated lunch counters broken we break down citizens' doors at midnight raids and school children could not be taught about evolution right is an artist could be censured at the whim of government. robert bork and his ilk from which mitt romney will hand pick his supreme court nominee have a radically different vision of america and the progressives who built the middle class in the twentieth century and expanded equal rights to hundreds of millions of our fellow citizens progressivism which brought us new rights like the right to protection from poverty in old age protection from sickness protection from the ravages of involuntary unemployment protection from hunger protection from discrimination you name it those progressive steps forward all hang by a thread and their fate will be determined this election while most of the focus in
7:56 pm
the media has been on whether or not the plutocrats will pay their fair share of taxes or whether obamacare is going to be upheld or struck doubt or whether women will have access to contraceptives especially if they're raped the highest stakes are on the supreme court and which ideology will hold sway for the next few decades in that most powerful branch of our government. with just ninety days to go and fewer just days to go excuse me until this election you can vote for whoever you want but you must consider the consequences of a mitt romney presidency noam chomsky understands those consequences and suggested that those who vote in a swing state must vote in self-defense against mitt romney which means voting for barack obama noam chomsky is right we must be voting against those who wish to close the book on progress drone wars indefinite detention the growing surveillance state the war i was a blowers there are grotesque policies a started with bush and since i've been championed by this administration but these
7:57 pm
policies will sadly not be overturned at the ballot box they'll be overturned by movements in the streets and progressives must begin building those movements right now but the fate of over one hundred years of progress will be decided at the ballot box during this election because the supreme court is hanging in the balance progressives ignore this reality at our own peril and that's the way it is today october twenty sixth two thousand and twelve here on the big picture and don't forget democracy begins with you get out there get active tag your it cx.
