make the u.s. presidential campaign the most expensive in history. with all sides in the syrian conflict. the only way to stop the bloodshed. protesters. group developing.
11:01 am
thanks for joining us here today. live in moscow hurricane sandy has caused chaos to the u.s. presidential election with. early voting disrupted but it's the economic storm over the last few years which is why. criticism thrown at the two major candidates over their links to the rich who are still ultimately hogging the wealth of the nation. as our tees up close us alexion coverage continues this week we turn our attention to domestic issues concerning voters now you us presidents have historically referred to america as an exceptional nation a land of opportunity where one can work hard and over time climb the proverbial economic ladder but one year ago that myth was boston when occupy wall street activists camped out here in zuccotti park igniting eye nationwide grassroots
11:02 am
movement protesting corporate greed wealth inequality and in a world middle class today the fact is the u.s. gap between rich and poor has never been wider and unprecedented amount of americans are sliding down the proverbial ladder while the top one percent earn an average annual income of twenty four million dollars enough to bet on both horses running in the nation's biggest political race. it's the most expensive political playoff in u.s. history a competition for the country's most powerful position one of the things i suspect governor romney and i probably agree on is let's come back to something the president i agree on no matter who wins the two thousand and twelve election. america's ninety nine percent movement will be left with a one percent president regardless of who we vote for wall street wins i mean
11:03 am
that's really one of the main messages is that when we're casting about we see that we have these corporations giving so much money to candidates and they can't be objective when it comes to the interests of the vast majority of the bonus loving industry that ignited america's economic crisis real estate collapse job hemorrhage and foreclosure epidemic. is also on track to break campaign donation records for the two thousand and twelve presidential election each election cycle each four years because. the more they did four years ago so running for president is now a half a billion dollar undertaking you need half a billion dollars to credibly run for the president of united states and you're going to raise that from large corporations and wealthy individuals in the case of mitt romney wealth attracts wealth the republican candidate has a reported net worth of two hundred million dollars and according to the center for responsive politics the top eight financial contributors to romney's campaign are wall street banks with employees from goldman sachs bank of america and morgan
11:04 am
stanley rounding out the top three. this is the by the moment changes come to america five in two thousand and eight barack obama became the largest beneficiary of wall street backing in u.s. election history. receiving more than forty two million dollars from the finance insurance and real estate sectors it's hard to believe that smart rational guys and big companies with huge research departments and a real understanding of the society are going to give that much money and expect nothing in return so their donation is probably not a charity since becoming president obama's justice department hasn't prosecuted one person in connection to the two thousand and eight financial collapse on the other hand top executives from j.p. morgan chase citigroup and general electric were recruited to work in the white house what we have cemented into place is a system of legalized bribery public elected officials are now since corporate

employees you know the flagrant sort of corruption the ability of this small rapacious class of corporate oligarchy to write the laws write the legislation create a two tiered system this ultimately is going to implode according to a two thousand and twelve harris poll the majority of americans see wall street executives as dishonest and overpaid with an overwhelming amount of citizens in support of tougher regulation. and overhaul the occupy wall street movement began championing last year as millions of americans flooded the streets. thousands facing brutal arrests. to protest wall street greed economic inequality and corporate influence over u.s. politics. election day draws near occupy activists say both candidates have pander to their financial donors and successfully ignored the biggest american

grassroots movement to be seen in decades we see little difference between the two parties they're both basically imperialist parties and i think that one thing that i can really do is expose how. the democratic system as we have it right now is basically a sham the political system is so broken in so many ways that the reason that we continue to come out in the streets and raise you know ring the alarm bells around economic injustice and economic situation in our country is because you know people aren't doing their job millions of americans will soon be heading to the polls lacking support for either major candidate but voting against the one they liked least however with wall street successfully cementing strong ties to both presidential runners some may wonder if the winner of this election has already been declared hurry up or not i r t v r. r let's get a bit more on this and how the u.s. presidential race is being seen by those protesting against corporate influence but
11:07 am
i'll join love i want to guard activist from austin arrested while taking part in the blockade of the port of houston a year ago which he says was the result of police in trouble it is good to see you today i'll get straight to it for you do you feel the demands of what you call the so-called ninety nine percent have been taken into account in the ongoing us presidential race. probably not not not well enough i mean there is some lip service paid to regulations on wall street but we had to twitter bomb the last presidential debate to get a even a seat at the table in any kind of way so they're not talking about the ongoing lawsuit involving they not talking about. what we're interested in mostly which is debt. real regulations on wall street real participatory democracy. and making sure people say in their houses and have education so it seems like there's there's
11:08 am
a lot of the same rhetoric going from both sides both parties and a lot of the same that we've heard in the past in the last two years in this entire election cycle and there you go you make mention about people losing their homes we know about the housing loss here would be overrated. when you talk about the lack of attention to the so-called ninety nine percent let's address one major issue here you know this campaign is the most expensive in u.s. history i mean that should certainly all in by itself raise several eyebrows there is any feeling among them among americans about that i mean it should be a vote of democracy and not a vote of those sponsored by corporations. well absolutely and i think that's why there are so many occupiers who were interested in citizens united and ending this sort of torrent of money and donations that's made available to to representatives new of different ideas and approaches to to have to curtail that or curb that making publicly funded elections or some sort of caps. you know there's different
11:09 am
ideas floating around but in terms of occupy the amount of money coming in is exactly what a lot of us are afraid of that disenfranchises a number of people who can't afford a lobbyist who can't afford a seat at a dinner with their candidate because it's fifty thousand dollars a plate or something like that that that barrier that that's caused by the the money in politics keeps a lot of minority voices out picture majority who are americans out of the conversation so of course you've got barack obama you've got mitt romney as well but do you think voters are aware in america that there are other presidential candidates to take into account for this election. well i think that they have been made aware by programs like like yours i saw that he was broadcasting the other third party candidates so you have a number of folks like jill stein rocky anderson gary johnson and. mr good who are
11:10 am
all campaigning for the presidency i don't think that they've gotten enough exposure and there have been people who have been working both inside and outside the system folks like jill stein who have gotten arrested protesting the fact that they can't get into those debates that they can't make those alternate ideas and voices come out because the commission on presidential debates says that they can't they can't participate and and yet so i think that some people are aware and programs like yours are helping to bring that awareness out in a democracy now also did some good mates and c.-span as well so that's helping but it's certainly not getting the attention that that they should be getting now as we all know i finally when it came to obama and his whole campaign pledge four years ago his whole platform was about change now do you and your fellow activists expect any change to come off to this presidential election. well. i don't know i don't know what you expect exactly i think i think that he's going
11:11 am
to be moving forward in some of his some of his policies and i think it's up to us really to continue to pressure him and he said that himself back in the in the last his last term that you have to force him in some way and i think i think that's true we're going continue to have to make pressure to see if we can force something like what's happening in finland where iceland a more participatory democracy where people can actually submit policy ideas electronically or even if there is something like an article five convention would be great some sort of input by the citizens on our constitution able to think of amendments or we just need to be more involved in the need to put pressure on whoever does come into office to give us a place at the table these debates should be lasting longer long we should we should be able to talk and debate and have critical conversations with our elected representatives throughout the year obama should just be sitting down with mitt romney should be saying that chomsky or chris hedges or other other people who have
11:12 am
heard or ideas you should really have an intelligent conversation going to gaza and occupy often activists are joining us live from texas of course in the u.s. thank you very much for coming on the program today. well as well campaign it will continue on air and online all the way up to the boat i do stay with us here on our team as we explore some of the most overlooked and outright ignored aspects of the race. what lies ahead for auction will movements mobilize calls for a new american who stands for the millions nine percent u.s. election is close by monday october twenty ninth on r.t.e. . thanks for joining us here on our to today russia's foreign minister says international powers should put more pressure on the warring sides in syria after the latest truce was wrecked after meeting the international envoy to syria right here in moscow sort of left off urged western states and regional players to engage

with president assad piskun office been following the talks right here in the russian capital. even though it was supposed to last just four days the ceasefire in syria didn't work and now the question on everybody's lips is what happens next and both russia's foreign minister lavrov and special envoy brahimi are placing their bets on the geneva communique which was signed by wall power center by just both sides of the conflict in syria to simultaneously put their weapons down and also for equal pressure to be applied on both of them from the outside but according to russia's foreign minister far from all countries which signed this agreement back in geneva are playing by the rules that i see in the in the let's say you do russia is probably the only country along those that took part in the geneva talks on the thirtieth of june which negotiates regularly with all sides in the syrian conflict the government and all opposition groups with no exceptions we expect our western partners and partners in the region to do the siege they should
11:14 am
get used to the idea that without dialogue with the syrian government virtually nothing can be achieved and this is currently a major problem in moving towards a political process in syria internal special envoy brahimi said he is sorry that the ceasefire plan didn't work it was negotiated to take place during the course of the feast of sacrifice was supposed to end today but was in fact broken right on the first day with a deadly blast in damascus then violence continued in different parts of the country throughout the weekend and was told by another deadly explosion in damascus on monday and russia's foreign minister labral says that with these provocations taking place the syrian government is also making disproportionate responses so mr brahimi is facing a very tough task of finding some sort of a diplomatic solution and more importantly making it work he himself says that you know level of distrust between the two sides of the coptic in syria is so high right now it won't even when they begin discussing some sort of obligations each

a more this is going to be a center of training in which to reach out to islam is muslims to harden up and maybe evil lies in islam of ordinary muslims in this country and i mean so many muslims don't want that the problem here is that. muslims themselves are opposing this mosque more on the grounds that they don't want to worship their god but on the grounds that women aren't allowed the local population of muslim population has no and the say in how the mosque itself is governed all the local authority would say to us is. planning application as this is currently being it would be inappropriate. at this stage in many ways if this went ahead to be like a tipping point and. there be no stopping fundamentalist islam if this one goes up well if that happens we all need to leave the country over the last one out please
