so. dull of course candidates for the american president to make that last pitch to voters here. a string of deadly explosions rock syria a suicide bomber detonated himself in the flashpoint. children are reportedly among those killed by a fresh blast in damascus. plus greece is set for a weeks free as workers across the board kick off strikes against austerity. new cuts to satisfy international and.
2:01 pm
international news in coming from the new center here in moscow this is almost thirty million americans have already cast their votes for president queuing for hours at early polling stations across the country although too soon to tell which way the verge is working mitt romney a lot together according to most polls but lost in the rivalry between republican and democrat alternatives that many americans have longed for. here it is the venue for the next presidential debate with the alternative candidates in this election our studio in washington d.c. though it's not very big as you can see it will make sure there is lots of room for discussion on issues that somehow don't fit into the mainstream media discourse here alternatives to obama and romney have effectively been pushed out of the major national debates we ask how and why. pushed out and quite literally jule styne presidential nominee from the green party was arrested on the
2:02 pm
day of the second presidential debate between mitt romney and barack obama in mid october right outside the venue where it took place she was there protesting her exclusion from the debate we were tightly bound with plastic restraints and tied to chairs for eight hours for daring to stand up and demand open debates will turn out if presidential candidates had their own debate in chicago they brought up issues which the big party candidates never came close to discussing like the legislation signed by president obama which allows the government to indefinitely detain american citizens without charge or due process it's an incredible the trail of our civil liberties on foreign policy the alternative candidates argue there's practically no difference between mitt romney and barack obama regardless of whether or not romney gets elected or obama gets elected three things are going to happen we're going to find ourselves with a continued heightened police state in this country we're going to find ourselves
2:03 pm
continuing to militarily intervene in the world which results has resulted in hundreds of millions of enemies to this country that wouldn't otherwise exist the similarity of views that president obama and mitt romney showed during their foreign policy debate became a matter of numerous jokes on foreign policy it appears that all that's left for the presidential race is this one model. i mean at least we still get our choice of color but if you hate. the us mainstream media are entirely focused on the two party race the majority of americans know very little if anything about alternatives jule styne of the green party who i set down with before her arrest is not going to be represented on ballot papers in every state the american system is designed to eliminate political opposition like some of the. you know dictatorships that we criticize that have rigged political systems in many ways the
2:04 pm
american system is also rigged but in ways that are not as straightforward and with the like of interest from the mainstream media smaller parties see the deck stacked against them in a national vote but not only are americans stuck with a two word phrase but they're also not guaranteed to get the president to the majority cast their votes for in a us presidential election a candidate can win the majority of the popular vote and still lose the election because it's not the popular vote but the electoral college that decides the outcome of the presidential election here so how does it work every state but maine and nebraska give the candidate a certain number of points and the winner has to collect the magic number two hundred seventy points even if a candidate loses a state by just say three votes they get zero points that's how george w. bush won the election in the year two thousand although he lost in the popular vote he won due to the tricky state to stay score says that according to gallup poll
2:05 pm
a record forty percent of americans now identify themselves as independents the chief of the federal election commission under george w. bush michael toner told me in the us electoral system they don't have much choice if you moved away from a winner take all electoral system and once or proportional representation i think you would have far more successful political parties here in the states because there are a large number of americans actually the most. most of the biggest share biggest increase in voter registration today in america is not democrats it's not republicans it's independents if you look at the states large numbers of people now are identifying it as an independent now they often will vote pretty reliably republican or democrat but that's a pretty good indication that there's a million tens of millions of people who if they had their choice might pick another party but one group that stands to win for the lack of choice spurred the corporations that contribute lavishly to political campaigns trying to buy support
2:06 pm
for their companies what we have in this country in many respects is covert corruption legalise corruption in the political system itself being held hostage by special interests is a form of corruption each candidate on the republican and democratic side now spend nearly a billion dollars each in order to get to the white house i mean i think our founding fathers would be spinning it in their graves if they could see this while in office mr toner oversaw a campaign finance of the elections the most sophisticated companies what they do is they're in good shape no matter who wins right they hire lobbyists on both sides of the aisle they often make political contributions both sides of the aisle this is called hedging your bets here in america as you would say in las vegas. and even vegas as they say no matter how you play it the house always wins speaking of us alexion one could say no matter how you vote business as usual wins it won't be
2:07 pm
business as usual during the alternative candidate is the bait this monday night the candidates will be here in this studio were chosen by online voters as the winners of the last third party debate held in chicago about two weeks ago we block as that debate life no mainstream us news channel did so an important point to make here is that by giving a media platform to these candidates does not mean that we endorsing their views it's an honor for us to host the event. we're trying to show what others don't and we also think it's going to get a lot of viewers you're welcome to be one of them my certainly well from our debate ready or almost ready studio here in washington i'm going to. and who better to talk to us about the alternatives to a bomb romney than one of the candidates challenging them joined by presidency she's the presidential candidate for the socialism and liberation party understand that even if elected you would be barred from presidency due to your age so why are
2:08 pm
you really running. i mean we're trying to expose the elections and to give voters an alternative to talk about how you know from our perspective a change has never come from the elections never come from the politicians change comes from building the movement let's talk about that issue of ineligibility you know people forget that the constitution is a living document you know when the constitution was framed i would have been considered an eligible because i'm a woman or because i'm african-american and the only reason that change is because oppressed people women and african-americans and many other oppressed people refused to accept their marginalization under the law and instead organized and fought back against it you know at a time when young people are suffering so disproportionately from the policies of this government why is it acceptable to disenfranchise us in this way and keep us out of the government that's one of the points i'm making of this campaign if it's . of course i think that you will actually get elected this is a perfect opportunity as an election for your voice to be heard but in order to take part in the campaign you need a lot of money and how can you do that when you are anti corporate of course your
2:09 pm
party is and you need the backing of big business to you to get even your voice heard in order this. right i mean under the two party system it's really the two party system is really just a form of class rule you know it's a way for the one percent to exercise their almost unlimited domination of the political and economic system in this country you know obama and romney are spending like two point five billion dollars which first off what a tremendous waste you know i've been in new york doing really. for hurricane sandy you know there are forty thousand people who become homeless as a result of this hurricane what could those people do with the two point five billion dollars you know why are we using it to build housing instead but you know the corporations given this money you know you don't get that kind of money without the support of the big banks and corporations to ensure that their interests are present in the elections you know and so that regardless of whether it's a democrat who wins or republican wins it's the corporations who when the banks when it's the people who lose and we've managed to do an awful lot with just ideas you know we have a ten point program that reeks of things that working people really need we have a network of volunteers you know we haven't paid anyone and we still managed to
2:10 pm
turn in thirty thousand signatures to get on the ballot in new york city you know we're on the ballot in thirteen states right now and it's really just the power of our organization you know it's the truth of our message is resonating with people and that's what's helping us get out there if you have a thought about maybe clubbing together with other party candidates and perhaps forming a temporary political union to give you a chance and there must be some similarities in your causes amongst those parties on the chance of course to put your concerns on a platform. i mean absolutely you know we believe in and unity and i agree with a lot of what the third parties are saying but you know from our perspective fundamentally it's not about who is president under the system it's the system that is fundamentally corrupt you know it's the system that guarantees that there's going to be greater and greater profits for the wealthy few and greater and greater misery for the rest of us so you know there are some third parties to believe that it's just a matter of who is president you know they say if i can get into office i'll change everything but we're saying the whole system's got to go you know it doesn't matter who gets elected the people must unite and organize and overthrow the system in
2:11 pm
order to get. the near future that that two party domination will ever change that you will be able to end what you call corruption in this dominance. well you know there's a saying in south africa they said all revolutions are impossible until they happen and then they were always enough at a ball you know we see people all over the world are rising up against a system that produces mass unemployment a system that produces racist police brutality that produces so much misery for the majority of us you know people from tunisia to egypt to greece to spain to italy in montreal people are in the streets and they're fighting back and you know the us is a part of that world the us is a part of that movement you know when i see the movement rising every day i've been out here talking to people more and more people who are very upset with the system and who are fighting back and i have a great belief in the people and i'm all right thanks very much of a presidency looking for here and you know the bright little later here on our t.v. thank you. i would just remind you we are hosting the party kind of debate here on r.t. at nine pm two am g.m.t.

2:16 pm
details. three major attacks have taken place across syria on monday in the first a suicide car bomb that killed more than fifty syrian soldiers as well as pro-government gunmen now it happened in the central syrian province of hama and according to reports the attack was carried out by an al qaida inspired islamic militant group states also say that only two people were killed but we have no way of independently verifying this information there are suggestions that at least one ton of explosives was used in the attack in a separate incident in the capital city of damascus a blast there has killed several people and injured many more among them children it is thought that the cause of that attack was a car bomb and then also on monday a bus attack also in damascus so five people killed three of them children as well as and women very many bats in which there were traveling was hit by a mortar shell and that caused this explosion now we do not know who is behind
2:17 pm
these attacks but certainly in the past rebel groups have claimed responsibility for similar such attacks what we have seen is monday a bloody day of violence in syria where the situation on the ground is intensifying . well for more on the latest violence in syria and diplomatic attempts to prevent it i'm joined live from beirut by showing the want to she's a commentator and political analyst covering the middle east well terror attacks have become a common rebel tactic in syria while they resorting to that. i don't i don't know that this is a new thing i mean certainly we've seen terror tactics employed from the start. a year and a half ago there was a need to sway popular opinion quickly and decisively and you often saw incidents where civilians of another sect were attacked or gas gas lines were blown up there were abductions i mean these are. things we saw of almost from the start i
2:18 pm
would say that there's certainly been an escalation of these activities this year at various points because there's been some frustration that that the assad regime and and the syrian government have not fallen as quickly as some of the other regimes in the region and and i mean it's important that we actually examine why the thing is but i think again we're seeing another escalation of activities because there is a change on the the regional scene. as well regarding the rebels with sort of a clinton initiative to come up with an alternative syrian opposition and you are going to continue seen as solution of charities in syria because they are until there is a vital turn the corner turned and that corner has not been turned yet you talk about swaying opinion wouldn't terrorist attacks lose international support for the public traces. you would imagine so i mean the answer is yes and it's the no some
2:19 pm
groups don't actually chair they have their own existential battles or they have their own. you know religious fights these are groups that are funded have only by pfizer to pick berries islamist parties and will continue to receive funding from these parties no matter you know how things turn on the other hand there are other groups that are highly embarrassed by the increase in terra kittie's by particularly fundamentalist islamic groups the focus states france the u.k. in the u.s. . and turkey for instance are you know now you see them trying to distance themselves themselves from these kind of groups on the other hand they point out that these islamic militant groups aren't some of the best organized supply and they're highly motivated not just from my job but also because of funds so so
2:20 pm
if the answer is yes the know. it so why why why you're seeing this effort now to to create an alternative syrian opposition because there is something certainly that the that these groups are going to make the whole effort of regime change thank you very much i thought showing no one and joining us live from beirut. british prime minister david cameron has kicked off his middle east a home sales tour pitching to sell more than one hundred fighter jets to gulf monex faced with criticism about his client's human rights record the prime minister replied by saying he taught him about it but what about the reports there's history between britain and the kings. in the past the british prime minister has spoken about how britain's interests line up holding the country's values but it was all interests and no talk of values this morning when david cameron touched down in dubai he's going to be trying to sell over one hundred u.k.

three million pound gift was hardly a break with tradition but it's possible longstanding relationship of reciprocal favors between the bahraini monarchy and strains within the british establishment so it looks like talk of british values is good p.r. when it comes to defending trade links and good relations with countries whose human rights records some would call into question. at least five explosions this went bahrain's capital manama the bombs which exploded in different parts of the city were homemade at least two people were killed in what the government terrorist attacks it comes in with the kind of regular proof opposition. does that often end up with rudd police resorting to violence champignons from the u.k. call them website patrick henningsen but he's the money he will use these attacks as a pretext to suppress opposition to let them on that it doesn't fit the modus operandi of the reform movement in bahrain this hasn't been done before and also by looking

at the victims and the locations it doesn't fit standard terrorist bombing so the government is the one who's benefiting from these blasts and not the protest movement one should ask that maybe this is a false flag bombing whereby. parts of the government security agencies or mercenaries hired by them have set off the bomb in order to radicalize the protest movement but also to give the judge government justification for a heavy crackdown against pro reform movements in bahrain uprisings in places like kuwait and buff rain. or i believe they're genuine arab spring uprisings if they're u.s. allies if they're staunch u.s. allies and you see an uprising then there's a high probability that they are genuine uprisings therefore the west will not cover this. more stories available for you right now on r.t.
