here on the program in just a second on a special report on the volunteers of the upcoming two thousand and fourteen olympics in russia this isn't. the mighty volga it runs deep through the russian soul it has provided inspiration for songs and poems and is the country's main north south entourage and decades ago schumann ingenuity connected it to the don't revert to the west the vogue the dawn canal is an engineering marvel within a day a vessel can pass the canals thirteen locks ten million tons of shipping does so every year. another concrete giant is this finished fifty years ago it's the biggest hydroelectric plant in europe empowers the local city of volgograd and
9:33 am
sends lots more electricity to moscow the hydroelectric plant behind me is a potent example of how much the volga can provide but harnessing a river like this isn't without its cost. fishermen have been watching fish stocks for years they see the slow damage the downing of the river has done especially to russia's prized sturgeon the source of caviar but in the president of the hydroelectric plant has done significant damage because it's stocked fish swimming up river to the spawning grounds. within a year all these houses would have gone fallen into the river depending on how many of the hydroelectric plants turbines are on the water level can change suddenly and dramatically too suddenly for the banks to absorb. control of the river flow by the plant has made building on the bogus front plane more attractive serious floods are less likely but the water that is put into the. rains is taken away from the fish

that need it now but last the voice of the voters of color jake might start being heard. the first time in fifty years the rules will contain a point on maintaining biodiversity in the river we still have a chance to bring the volga back to life. meaning that the mighty volga is treated with the respect it deserves. russia's black sea coast resort of sochi is busy working towards the twenty fourteen winter olympic games the city is preparing for an event that would welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors from all across the world and when they arrive they'll be greeted by the faces of the games so cheesed olympic volunteers.
9:35 am
there are hundreds of volunteers lined up to take part in sochi twenty fourteen but it's fair to say that some of got a bit of a head start and i'm about to meet two who got a taste of the real thing at london two thousand and twelve. constantine and christina were among a very select few chosen to head over to the u.k. . to find just the last three hours ahead and become division between. us from russia and was in russia have to say it's a centrist. group for us from such an. event like competition in which kills to check our skills and out so hard to call skills and other personal qualities and they learned plenty of things that should be a great help for the sochi games ahead and he rants and. prompt agonizing.
9:36 am
by twenty fourteen there could be up to twenty five thousand volunteers ready to join them in sochi so what sort of people do the organizers want. to send behind. already. and there's no shortage of applicants wanting to prove themselves especially here in the host city. looking after all the visitors to sochi twenty fourteen is obviously going to be a massive job but that doesn't mean that everybody makes the cut i'm going to meet one man who thinks he's got what it takes. to me you're ready for this yeah excellent nineteen year old lad is a student at sochi university and understandably he's nervous about the recruitment

process my time has gone so these questions finally they. don't know what to expect so what sort of things do you think they're looking for maybe they will ask some questions about my previous one theory so all something like details of my private life i really don't know wildlands settle down to his interview the head recruiter showed me around so much university was one of just twenty six higher education facilities in russia picked as a recruitment center for more than one hundred fifty choices many of their interviews are done over the internet but those who do come in for a face to face may just have a little less saw it. the seventh of february twenty twelve two years to the day before the start of the twenty fourteen olympics will at this volunteer heart and krasnaya polyana. each aspiring volunteer is asked to touch the heart to symbolize that all of the volunteer dreams will come true. by and that means that the shore

problems how could they be ok let me go. there are a number of seminars and question and answer sessions but there's also plenty going on outside the classroom. this is the generations for peace main goal to develop peace sustainable peace and tolerance through sports so all the delegates need to sport programs should be taught and they will work with children after the camp so now they will have an example they activities for children that they will implement off in the camp so this is extremely important part and they can be many more universal sports than football i'm going to watch him. he seems like he knows what he's doing.

but with the generations of pismo so being policy told him we were certainly playing an appropriate game and philip and pavel house whole series of activities lined up for us on. this problem so you want to use it. if you have no yeah you need to ask the person there's no sleep so i say yes so if you have seen you both someone as my space or ok or expert said about them but it's the bottom english some should be pretty good at giving the ball away. and the focus here is on guessing everyone involved trolls and competition. as the main goal of our. programs is to become when you create and connect people use each other and on the one team a decent of him on that makes it teams and on the one team can we get some chose so be destroyed by. there's between two teams and so is this to visit for both and

so she's generations for peace camp more than twenty delegates have gathered to learn new techniques focused on peace building and making their hometown a better place some of the participants immutable and tearing but others like the old and already making a difference. in addition to my regular work i'm also engaged in volunteer activity volunteer activity is basically focused on old people and orphan children and that's our target. our volunteers take care of people who can't leave home for one reason are they other maybe they're sick or something like that for example. when we help them well go to the shop or just help out around the house or oneself.

but it's all in a good cause and for valentino that brings its own rewards. it's great to help people who are. can't help themselves. this combination of hard work and a charitable spirit is exactly the sort of thing that generations for peace is trying to encourage us of course they're always looking for more support and back at camp the delegates were learning how to ask for backing. so this is kareena presenting our pitch as to why some local leaders should join generations for peace and now she's trying to convince the audience here. public speaking is another skill that's developed on the forums encourage the participants to face their fears. i was always the same as. large it's not large but still. but practice makes perfect and the

finish line of the camp or i can say that i'm proud of them and like their progress . and a fool everyone gets the chance to share exactly what they've learned presentation and conflict resolution is the. end of three days for the whole world they've got to get that's. not a question of. solace from conflict resolution we also saw presentations on creating speech programs for children and the oath of negotiation. each group used different techniques to get their points across with question and answer sessions powerpoint slide shows and plenty of games. they don't clearly put a lot of effort in and it was well appreciated when the camp during two clues in the remains was to say a few words. i didn't really know first of all what to expect when i came here but

i think thanks to classes fantastic organization and your amazing enthusiasm i've seen a lot of people who will be really want to make a difference to their communities and it's been fantastic to me to be a part of it thank you. but i certainly wasn't the only one who had a memorable experience. i think the most. the most valuable thing is that we'll go out to practice and knowledge how to build. a ship. and j. . implemented all my knowledge. in practice unfortunately. i think we did a lot of work we did our presentations our projects and now our duty is to create some physical activity and now i know how to do it and how did the false feel about everything. myself like

a little bit tired because for this. teaching group of people with only to train. it was a great challenge but i think we have done our best and. the program is well done and there was just enough time to create want to stay memories will become find a place to store. people like these so choose future it's a limp movement seem in very safe hands it was almost time for me to head home to moscow but i was going to have one last chance to watch the volunteers put the new knowledge into practice. like all the many better things to do on a sunny summer's day than to come out and play with your friends but not every parent has the time to spare to supervise them and that is what people like and so on to the next year coming. every sunday they run an open play session for local

how could i not feel at home with the olympics coming up i spent a good chunk of the summer seeing what was going on in or around sochi but meeting the volunteers and working with g.f.p. had been the best part of all i really an experience. i met so many highly motivated young people in the last few days it's been quite humbling to be part of it the volunteers who really do want to make a better place and that means even though the winter games are still a way away the olympic spirit is definitely alive and well. just give me can i speak we'll see you. let me let me explain my son died in iraq i don't agree you don't agree we don't have to look for other names my son isn't
