6:30 pm
welcome back to our g.'s live election coverage it's now six thirty pm and some of the polls have closed in indiana and kentucky and we here at r.t. already ahead of all the other corporate news outlets to call a winner is that it's presidential election that's right ladies and gentlemen our next president of the united states is going to be obama obama your let's let's go home right now not yet not yet that's because president obama isn't named obama but if you're one of the americans who voted for the third party today then it
6:31 pm
might as well be not counted to a lot of americans there just isn't much of a difference between the two parties anymore and when it comes to the real serious issues facing the nation only the third parties are articulating it so roller third party candidates playing in this election and beyond well let's ask one of them joining us now is justice party presidential candidate rocky anderson. thanks for joining us tonight it's great to be with you thank you so what are your prospects for tonight. well our prospects for winning this election are nil they've been ill from day one especially given the fact that our message which resonates so well with the american people when they hear it has not been heard because the mainstream corporate own media shots just as the presidential debate commission shots from the debates which have been so constricted and really the dialogue has been so impoverished in this country as
6:32 pm
a result and rocky you say that you know that you don't have a shot at winning right now so let me ask you was your goal in the in the beginning to win or is it to change the narrative because right now what we're seeing is that the third party candidates as you say don't have a voice in this election. that's absolutely right the our goal was not to win the election and get governing power and at least now it was to as you say elevate the narrative in this country but also help create the conditions so that we can put together a broad based people's movement for change in the history of this nation we've seen third parties lose elections but they've actually won because the kinds of things they were talking about ended up prevailing in the long run teddy roosevelt who ran as a third party candidate with the progressive party almost his entire political platform
6:33 pm
was ultimately implemented in the law and we know that ross perot's involvement at least his first time around made a tremendous difference in not only the dialogue in this country but what ended up happening with our fiscal matters putting our fiscal house in much better order and ending up with the surplus by the end of the clinton administration so we can make a huge difference we've been talking nonstop for almost a year now about the corrupting influence of money in our government the plutocracy that's been build up the control by the very wealthy the massive human rights and civil rights violations the expansion of the imperial presidency and then of course the caving in by both parties to wall street at the huge expense of the american people in the public interest and as i said when we talk about these things resonates a great deal with people who aren't hearing anything from the to do uplift parties
6:34 pm
on these issues yeah exactly and i think you kind of touched on it when you were talking about and you talk about movements. is is a third party candidate can they win an election without substantial movements in the streets without you know the broad middle class out there trying to champion you guys is cause i mean is it is it possible for a third party candidate with as i said without those movements. i think it's absolutely going to happen because people in this country are coming together i've already talked to a number of people and with leaders in a number of organizations that go from the far right all the way to the left and we're identifying those issues that aren't being dealt with by the republicans and democrats that the vast majority of people in this country want to see move forward and primarily among those is the control by the very wealthy over our government
6:35 pm
the reason that we have so many public policy disasters it's why we don't have leadership on climate change that's why we don't have a decent health care system still in this country and that's why we have a budget that is so out of whack and with military spending that is absolutely insane but the military industrial complex even after all these years since president eisenhower warned us about it still has a stranglehold on our government these are things that people across the political board agree upon and i think that once we mobilize people around these issues we'll see leaders emerge and they will eventually have governing power representing not just the wealthy who by the elections but. a representative government that actually stands for the public interest and rocky and we know that it's not going to only take some type of
6:36 pm
a movement but we also have an electoral system that's not necessarily friendly to third party candidates should we start considering another system for example preferential voting or compulsory voting or proportional representation what that in the end help third party candidates become more viable well of course it would. we would see more representation it shouldn't be an either or choice for the american people but those in power benefit from the system we have right now the one thing we know we can do is create a movement making it impossible for those in power to any longer resist a constitutional amendment that will not only overturn the citizens united case but that will allow congress to put in place real reforms real limits on campaign contributions so we no longer have a congress and a white house that's beholden to the very wealthy and we can see the. we
6:37 pm
can accomplish this we in the history of this country the progressive social movements like women's suffrage the labor movement the civil rights movement none of those came about because of people who were elected and lead out on these issues all happened at the grassroots with people who were to maisha some made it clear and they were in rocky going to let up until we see that those kinds of changes rocky we're going to have to leave it there we thank you so much and we wish you good luck tonight and we're now going to turn the conversation over to another third party candidate still steinhauser presenting the green party so joe thank you so much for joining us i think i want to start with the first question is how are you doing this election night do you have any regrets is there anything that you would change no is been wonderful. i'm celebrating already in my opinion and the opinion of our campaign in the green party this is been a win for us that every vote cast for
6:38 pm
a green party candidate and for my campaign has been a standard for in a win for the politics of courage for reclaiming our political voice and reclaiming our political courage and for standing up on the issues that otherwise would not have been heard for standing up for a green new deal for in the unemployment creating twenty five million jobs which we can do right now we know how to do for ending student debt making public higher education free and providing health care as a human right as we downsize the military and tax the rich to pay for it this is what the public is clamoring for and we feel like it's been wonderful it's been like giving out candy to let people know that there actually is a political party that can be a vehicle for those solutions going forward and i don't want to go off something that rocky energy just said about movements. someone running for president
6:39 pm
a third party circuit in a system that is not very friendly to third party candidates do you consider yourself a politician or a movement leader. i guess the word politician has been so tarnished and so associated with big money corrupting it that i really don't consider myself a politician i consider myself a mother a medical doctor a health care provider an activist and an organizer and in my view politics and electoral politics is one tool that we have for building a movement for building a community those are really one in the same going to the polls alone won't do it in the same way that simply building a movement alone isn't going to do it we need both to work together that's how we change history. and that's what's under way there was a poll just released from common dreams i think today it was just their own membership but you know it showed that my campaign was second to.
6:40 pm
the president and in fact as you came down the age spectrum votes for my campaign were going up and once you got to age thirty five i was ahead of barack obama and to my mind that's an incredible victory unders thirty five and under we're winning at something like forty four to thirty seven percent that is the future it's not going away we still have the same problems the democrats like the republicans do not have a single exit strategy the people know what the exit strategies are and they're you know they're working hard for them out in the street and my campaign in the green party provides that political voice that we need to help leverage the work that's being done in the street by the movement to drive it into the political dialogue so together we are on stoppable and we do know the chill that we've seen of the
6:41 pm
believer kind of happen with the democrats and with the republicans but the fact of matter is and i think this is what you and so many others like you represent is that not every american can fall into the boundaries of a democrat and republican expression with how carcassonne they've become so talk about moving on moving beyond this election what is going to happen what steps are you and your party going to take to get on the ballot in the future great great point. one out of every two voters is predicted to be staying home in this election that's ninety million people twice as many as the number that were expected to come out for barack obama i mean would you go be going to turn in my opinion no i think we need to give them a reason to come out and vote by democratizing this is to force people to come out and vote for candidates that don't represent them. under the current system i think is just another sign of. you know the kind of controlling police and surveillance state that we don't need i think we need to unleash the power of democracy and give
6:42 pm
people a reason to come out and vote and we can do that by getting the money out getting the people back in if we get to five percent it's a whole new ball game going forward so we would that's why going forward be on this election exactly like dr jill stein thank you so much i would like so much. throughout our coverage tonight famine i have been talking about the serious issues in this election cycle but there have been a few political missteps here now is election moment number six. he actually retired retroactively at that point because he knew and it up not going back to the after his time and salt lake city so he was actually retired from being . and we're going to take a quick break but up next we'll be talking money money money and how it changes the face of american politics.
6:43 pm
here is mitt romney trying to figure out the name of that thing that americans call . the guy who cares and. the future. are going to distract us from what you and i should care about because they're profit driven industry that sells a sensationalistic garbage he calls it breaking news i'm out the market and we're going to break that.
6:44 pm
welcome to the capital account i'm lauren lyster. what drives the world the fear mongering used by politicians who makes decisions that's considered breakthrough had already been made who can you trust no one will is imbued with a global missionary zeal where we had a state controlled capitalism is called sessions when nobody dares to
6:45 pm
ask we do our tea question more. so let's face it one of these two men rock obama or mitt romney will be president but here's the thing when it comes to really stands the game to game the most tonight barack obama and mitt romney aren't anywhere in the equation instead their investors will be the real winners and losers tonight and that's all thanks to the supreme court citizens united decision this is the first presidential election in which millionaires billionaires transnational corporations trade groups unions you name it can spend unlimited amounts of money to put their guy in the white house and there are a lot of people standing just behind those two men who have really taken advantage in this no holds barred electoral contest so let's meet
6:46 pm
a few of them all right first up sheldon adelson his worth more than twenty billion dollars any ranks twelfth on forbes four hundred richest americans list he's a casino mogul who made a lot of his fortune building casinos in macau china and he's given more than seventy million dollars to help mitt romney win this election that's more money than any single person has ever spent in an election in our nation's history in fact it's three times more so what does a dozen stand to gain from a mitt romney presidency. i don't know about two point three billion dollars that's how much it all soon will save under mitt romney's tax plan which gives people like eight also and mitt romney himself massive tax breaks on income dividends capital gains and a state's similar romney administration errors also stand to gain an additional nine billion dollars once the guy croaks. president obama's justice department is investigating a sin for corruption and bribing foreign officials to get his casinos built in macau so for a dosen an investment in mitt romney and
6:47 pm
a new justice department could put an end to this investigation this guy sheldon adelson is the man behind. curtain is the top all of this election but he's not alone that's right there's also harold simmons worth over nine billion dollars and ranked thirty third on the forbes richest americans list simmons invented the leveraged buyout and now controls five publicly traded companies dealing mostly in metals and chemicals has given twenty million dollars so far to mitt romney and other republican super pacs he claims he's spending all of this money in order to quote stop that socialist barack obama well that's good i'm glad someone is doing that and let's not forget about karl rove and the koch brothers you see these guys and other wealthy businessmen and promise to spend as much as a half billion dollars and i have to defeat president obama this election cycle for the koch's that romney's tax cuts deregulation and privatization agenda genda translate into massive windfall profits for the energy barons and for karl rove
6:48 pm
well he's corporate america's top political henchmen and he likes to win so these are the guys invested in mitt romney and let's not forget the other side democrats have their share fair of their fair share of deep pocketed donors as well need james simmons he's a billionaire hedge fund manager worth over ten billion dollars and run thirtieth on forbes list he's given four million dollars to super pac supporting president obama and the democrats and then there's steve most in a texas trial lawyers given more than three million dollars to probe democratic super pacs and let's not forget about fred bindiya mogul based out of chicago which is president obama's home city and he's given more than three million dollars as well as help to president obama and other democrats to help them win tonight but here's the big picture of all of this more money will be spent on this election than any election in our history this is a freak show election with freak show amounts of money pouring into it so the question is what effect will all this money have on our democracy and more on that
6:49 pm
let's talk to journalists a contributor to the nation lee fall an activist and spokesperson for move to him and david cobb thank you both for joining us. thanks for having me i want to start with you. what did citizens the person who hasn't been following and is just now tuning in on election night what does citizens united really do while the citizens united supreme court decision was handed down in january of two thousand and ten this decision basically overturned one hundred years of campaign finance law going back to ninety seven with the tillman act which prohibited corporations from spending directly to support candidates so by. over writing that law mccain feingold decades of precedent and the supreme court basically gave the green light for corporations and unions to spend directly
6:50 pm
in the election and while many have focused on how corporations can now give unlimited sums to super pacs and other campaign committees. the law is actually much more pervasive for instance we've seen a growing trend where now corporations can communicate with their employees and their vendors and in a new way basically if a corporation says. to a one of its workers i want you to vote for mitt romney because they're good for business and if you don't likely you'll lose your job well the corporation doesn't know exactly how that voter works how that voter of voted in the in the voting booth but this time of intimidation is now legal and we're seeing it in many different instances all over the country so corporations can now spend unlimited amounts and campaign committees they can directly advertise candidates posting them
6:51 pm
on site and they can also do this new form of communication with their employees and david let me go ahead and turn the conversation to you for just a minute i do want to ask you if this sounds as if these catch campaign contributions in a post citizens united world is really just an investment at this point. well of course it is i appreciate how you and family been talking about it i mean most shared of lee it's an investment i prefer to call it what i believe it really is which is legalized bribery we really legitimize the ability not just for candidates to be able to support candidates they like but even more perversely to intimidate either sitting officials or people who are running for office to intimidate them not to do what is in the people's best interest so absolutely that this corporate money has completely corrupted the political process i don't know a single person democrat republican green libertarian or independent who thinks
6:52 pm
that this is a good idea. this is going to be the first presidential election post citizens united we've seen two other elections we saw the wisconsin recall where we saw lots of outside money being spent and we saw the two thousand and ten midterm where we saw lots of outside money being spent and conservatives won both those elections fairly big and after the two thousand and ten midterm in particular we saw in congress congress's approval rating drop to ten percent lowest ever recorded do you think there's a correlation between all this money being spent in complete dysfunction in government. well here's a perfect example of how this type of corruption influences congress on the two thousand and ten midterm elections and that was the first election after citizens united as you mentioned the type of corporations that took advantage of the new campaign finance lionsgate were mostly oil and gas corporations big. publicly traded oil companies like exxon mobil and chevron. funneled their donations
6:53 pm
into the midterms using fronts like the u.s. chamber of commerce and companies like koch industries and many of their allies in the gas and fracking industry use friends like the americans for prosperity they. are the biggest spenders by far even eclipsing the party committees in two thousand and ten so it should be no surprise that in two thousand and eleven this new oil. oil congress you could call it. in the last two years were rated by the new york times as the most polluter friendly congress in all of american history. they did everything from trying to repeal the clean air act to amend and basically got the clean water act obviously taking huge steps to deny climate change one of the very first steps that last congress took was to dissolve the house of
6:54 pm
representatives global warming committee so that this money clearly buys policy and that's the big kind of warning for the next congress the next president state all this money has been spent many of it from undisclosed sources but believe you me the lobbyists know where the money's coming from and the lawmakers know the stores the money so they will be looking to deliver on the favors that were granted through this campaign and david i'm going to ask you this question i do want. and talk also about the fact that it's not just citizens united it's not just the amount of money that's coming into the workplace or the i mean that's coming into these elections but it's also the workplace right now governor i have employers can go ahead and tell their employees not only who to vote for but there they can encourage them to spend money in these races to to donate their time to these elections so can you talk a little bit about how these political stammering is kind of coming into the
6:55 pm
workplace and the effect that that's having on american and turn this election well you're exactly right and i appreciate how you framed it because we know that the corporate spending in elections is atrocious but it goes even deeper because corporations are claiming constitutional rights the first amendment the fourth amendment the fourteenth amendment have overturned democratically elected public health and public safety laws worker protection laws as lee pointed out they're using their so-called first amendment rights beyond merely just making political contributions but to communicate and intimidate their workers i mean this is outrageous i do want to really though lift up something that has been mostly unreported in the corporate media and that is the fact that there is a grassroots movement taking place across this country to rise up democrats republicans libertarians greens some republicans were coming together under the
6:56 pm
move to amend coalition and did you know that seven million voters at the local or state level are going to have an opportunity to vote their support for a constitutional amendment to abolish all corporate constitutional rights for both for profit and non-profits to abolish in its entirety the idea that money equals speech think about it seven million voters are weighing in on that possibility from colorado to montana to over half of the simpsons of massachusetts are going to vote on it and entire county in california and we just got started i'm telling you the american people are not taking this line. down we are building a genuine social movement and i don't care whether somebody is what party they're in i don't care where ideology is folks agree with us it moved to them in that we need a functioning democratic republic we're only human beings have inherited a little constitutional rights and that we the people are sovereign then i encourage folks to get involved with us because no matter who wins the presidency
6:57 pm
and move term in our work will continue unabated we are going to have a constitution to make it clear only human beings have inherent in a legal constitutional rights money is not beach and they're poor not only federal congress but also state legislators and local david david we're going to have to end it there leave on david cobb thank you so much for joining us we really appreciate both of your opinions but we're going to have to move along now i love him or hate on vice president vice presidential candidates play a huge role in campaigns sometimes helpful sometimes not so much here now is election moment number five. probably wants to lead he says the first hundred days he's good to big banks once again right through rules change wall street. we're going to put you all back in chains. and we're going to take
6:58 pm
a quick break but still i had we've heard the mainstream news stations talk nonstop about voter fraud and voter suppression during this election season how will this affect the outcome of the election will debate in just a minute. r t is the state run english speaking russian channel it's kind of like al-jazeera.
6:59 pm
russia today has an extremely confrontational stance when it comes to us. sometimes you see a story and it seems so you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else you hear or see some other part of it and realize everything you. are is a big. part of american power continues. things that. might actually be time revolution.
