1:30 pm
hello there welcome to business so as we reported earlier the american people have re-elected barack obama in these times of grim economic realities with the highest unemployment rate of any president reelected since franklin roosevelt in one thousand nine hundred thirty six so to discuss all the economic challenges ahead
1:31 pm
for mr obama i'm delighted to be joined by financial advisor. patrick. so hello to you thank you for joining us today now as my american friends reliably informs me there's an age old saying that it's the economy should you put that's what people say meaning that the state of the economy decide on the president so what's happened here that why was obama reelected in this failing economy is it a case of better the devil you know i or what. i think to a certain degree it was better the devil you know even though obama is frankly fiscally illiterate the problem was that ultimately mitt romney was an incredibly lucky luster accountability had the incredible potential economic account of the sea but he didn't really show through and therefore people were simply uncertain at the end of the whole position there looked to be some doctor recently that was suggesting that the u.s. economy was improving slightly certainly there has been
1:32 pm
a buying soon the economy since the no idea of the first term of obama but overall nobody really got terribly ensues nobody was very confident with either can't do that much why you saw barely two percentage point difference between the two when the polls were coming in and ultimately romney had the opportunity to win but he was simply not a strong enough counter to convince the electorate that he was the man to run the u.s. economy and if we look at the stock market's reaction right now we are looking at considerable losses as it says so investors are demonstrating their displeasure right now at obama well i think there's two things happen here first of all i mean something that's been talked about even longer than it's the economy stupid is by the rumor sell the fact and therefore yesterday actually markets were girding their law into really expecting that we're going to see a continuation of obama this morning we've got a centrally the post party hangover everybody's we're going up and they thought well could be good for markets could be good for the economy because we'll probably see more quantitative easing quantity of easing is affectively dropping money out
1:33 pm
of helicopters on the other hand of course the huge problem is that we not suddenly realize that this thing the fiscal cliff is looming at the end of the year and what the fiscal cliff means is that there are lots of tax rises coming there are various tax cuts that are going to be eliminated and indeed there is a sensually a total incontinence in the way that the american government spends its money. now it is obama's last term in office do you think that he will be a lame duck as if he wants to lead the president's. as a popular man do you think he will make the necessary decisions spending cuts to do the job. well that's a that's a very interesting question because i mean first of all i would argue that mr obama isn't a very popular man and he's been elected by about fifty three fifty four percent of the electorate and then reelected by fifty percent of it in his first term he was going to be the great amount of hope and she and should do all sorts of different things what we've seen in the last six or nine months has been an incredibly bitter
1:34 pm
campaign by somebody who's been very very keen to be moderately divisive across america and really therefore what are we looking at in economic terms i think we're not going to see any great difference because actually mr of obama just dogs not get the economy he doesn't understand and he doesn't seem particularly interested in it and during the course of the next four years he's simply not going to have any degree of economic power to move forward in the way that he would like which is essentially spending more government money aid because there isn't really any more government money to spend and second of all because anyway the republicans still control congress for at least the next two years so unfortunately little dark with a lovely degree of oratory once he can keep themselves under control that will be mr obama's second term i suspect. and do you think that some people could be losing their jobs federal reserve chairman ben bernanke and tim geithner treasury secretary do you think they could be out. i'm not entirely convinced it will be at
1:35 pm
this juncture as i say mr obama doesn't really engage by the economy he doesn't really understand the economy and actually overall i'm not necessarily sure that the biggest feelings are necessarily full with those two particular gentleman i'm not sure they're absolutely scintillating really brilliant at what they've done but nonetheless they've essentially followed the same orthodoxy that are amongst the central bankers and tracery secretaries at the moment to reduce the treasury secretaries and central bankers their reputations of taking a terrible knocking of the last four or five years because they don't really speak to know what they're doing as a collective group like a pathway thank you very much indeed for your time today that's all we've got time for. thank you for your time we're going to rock on and check out the markets and see what's going on we'll start with the u.s. and they are indeed responding to the election of barack obama as we've been stag and it's deep losses but the act is as concerned over the impending fiscal crisis dominate market sentiment also events in europe are really helping matters as well
1:36 pm
so let's check out see what's going on our european stocks fell by the most in two weeks and that was a european commission cut its growth forecast for the region there. now that means the euro is dropping a against the u.s. dollar and the russian ruble managed to still read into the major cards is in the session today the rest of markets then they suffered significant losses on wednesday that says europe's economic troubles hates investor sentiment so let's check out some individual stocks. we did have bucking the trend air carrier air flight its passenger traffic increased by a quarter out in the first nine months of the year that was again up to call us to one another half percent the company has joined the soap project in the territorial waters of sierra leon and or major ross nat finished a bit further than the market last point six percent you can see just. now more on the company's latest acquisition. t. and k b p will not affect its privatization plans us according to the prime
1:37 pm
minister medvedev he has confirmed that the state still to quit the country's biggest or producer by twenty six states so it's a lot of details i'm joined by tatyana. so you told us the russian government have been talking about their privatized as well weeks months quite some time now so all around bishan still really sick all they having second thoughts i wonder yes kater that's kind of tricky one because on the one hand the russian government wants to be sin committed to its privatization plans in order to make the russian economy more transparent and competitive but i don't really make a move to achieve that is let's take a closer look at the rossoneri story yes b.p. is increasing its stake in ross nast as part of the whole ten k.v. peace sale deal but now is a first if it's a prime minister you're sure all of that sale of six percent of the b.p.
1:38 pm
is actually of that very privatisation they've spoken so much of our before. right so as far as the concern that they are speaking to that privatisation program well valve depends on who you are asking of course the government would say we are privatizing we are on track but analysts i've spoken to do not agree they say this is not privatization on the contrary they say the whole thing from hours of nationalization and look first. big stage giant rosner is buying out a large independent oil producer ten k. vehicle and that's obviously a further nationalization and sack and experts say the mine of the b.p. would pay for rosneft stake would not go into the state bar just as the would be the case with the real privatisation. rosneft smart for company. the state old ross there for gossip would be the one who would require all of the cash ok
1:39 pm
china so as far as i understand it this is just the beginning of another state of the us nafta we own the market shortly providing the price is good is that right for her true. the point is katie that the good prices will be very very hard to get now because now ross and after with tim cave is a huge company we've over a hundred billion dollars capitalization and its shares should reflect this new capitalization of course draws near chairs group are on the back of the deal by about thirty percent but they still do not match this new capitalization of the company. like a ten year old so we got time for thank you so much marvelling i said i'm not all the complicated tough it was that we could be following ourselves thanks tonya ok all right then moving on to russia and cuba could soon ease flight connection between each other the countries have started talks to create a joint carrier is also plan to set up a harbor for that will don't flights from russia to other south american countries
1:40 pm
the connection point to include both passenger and cargo traffic as russia doesn't have direct links with many of its partners in the region. then that's business now after a short break we discussed freedom of speech has any real value at all today and what julian assange and his case shows us. in japan the average height for men is one hundred eighty two centimeters ten centimeters shorter because of that some employers refused to hire me one of them even told me directly that i was too short to deal with the client's computers already spent three months in this hospital and plans to stay for another four to add the coveted seven santa majors to his stature invented by the famed soviet orthopedic is good for you is there a from the nineteen fifties these frames were initially used to treat fractures in
1:41 pm
deformities by cutting bones and slowly pulling them apart and therefore stimulating tissue regeneration it was out of was able to receive arms and legs and people who thought they were crippled for life be sent to the other patients shattered bones and in many cases their shattered lives will go when professing designed his first brain using bicycle parts sixty years later he says invention is increasingly being used to help people what eager to fracture their legs to become a few centimeters taller than the ultimate goal is still the same six thing somebody is live both literally and figuratively about a third of patients admitted to the result of center now days seeking series three focus medical reasons most of them a man and most are not what you would call vertically challenged professor novick of who operated on many of them says it usually comes down to a man's pride some of the first patient to turn to us with
1:42 pm
a leg length in the request to meet his fifteen centimeters to still want to surgery because panos tool than him we like to say that we need to break their legs in order to fix their head maybe nothing wrong with them from an orthopedic point of view but there is something psychological that prevents them from living their lives fully being happy and we fix it like lengthening surgeries are banned in many countries and even the out there press. expensive in russia the entire course costs eleven thousand dollars about one tenth of the similar package in the united states financial considerations were one of the reasons that brought this washington state native to western siberia his main motive for the surgery had to do with how he fared in the others in america average height is one seventy five i was one sixty seven or one sixty eight and so one eight centimeters would have brought me right to average users wanted to be average for women height isn't so important you know
1:43 pm
i think girl can be sure it's not a big deal i hear guy is like expect to be taller just before the operation most this matter a russian girl who found he's a regional hyde quite india and yet he still would want to have had the surgery adding seven more centimeters to he self-confidence she told me the whole time you're crazy you're normal you're perfect. it's an hour's work or you're so what a compliment for somebody who's used to falling short of his own expectations. here with me today is the member of the german parliament from the country's left party seven doggerland thank you very much for being with us thinking you are the
1:44 pm
first and as far as i know so far the only m.p. to have visited julian assange at the ecuadorian embassy in london where he's been holed up after he was granted political asylum why did you do that and why you think your colleagues have overlooked the issue well i think many of my colleagues they are afraid to. watch because already there is a campaign going on in the mass media. to. prison and. normal criminal which is ridiculous because i think julian are so. very much historical thing. because of the covering of crimes by u.s. army in afghanistan and iraq and that's what i was getting at when i visited in london to show solidarity as i understand you don't consider him
1:45 pm
a criminal right i am not the court i think is really in our sawers has to go to court or has to have the opportunity to say in freedom. and to give the answers to the reply. for the swedish side. that means that he has to have the guarantee not to extradited to the u.s. do you think currently has no guarantees sweden and great britain they do not give the guarantee to not extradite him to the u.s. and extradited to the united states is not the best example to do everything in. a good way in the. case of justice so we do have a death penalty in the us and we do have lots of prisoners which are waiting for the death penalty or are for life. in prison
1:46 pm
and we have the example bradley manning. is concerning about the health of bradley manning and his case but he. afraid that he will the same fate if you will be extradited to the u.s. i do not think that julian. has done something wrong when he was discovering the u.s. . awak crimes. normally it's a really duty of everyone it's a human duty to d. cover what crime saw that is done by an asshole and i think in a way he deserve the nobel prize for peace but not the prison in the u.s. since your visit to our sons the u.s. has declared him an enemy of state his in the same tired now with taliban do you think can be hunted down right now captured or killed by the us
1:47 pm
it's possible. you never know. how people react on this declaration of the us the head of the us that he is the enemy that he. should be. should be seen like the taliban or. terrorists and want to drill in asuncion main concerns expressed to you how he thinks where the situation is going well i met him in a very very good mood. especially in a very good psychological more he is a very strong person and he is very self-confident and confident about this what he has done he knows that was right and. the only thing that you would like to free men and. got the
1:48 pm
opportunity to his replies to the swedish government and the security. in sweden is he optimistic well he hopes that you will soon get the opportunity to reply on these accusations. done by the swedish side and therefore he hopes that he will. from great britain and sweden that you will not be extradited to the u.s. few people have actually seen the conditions in which leaves these days the embassy we only know we all have been hearing that there is a very small room telephone and internet connection so could you please give us an idea what a living conditions are there while the living conditions are very high because this is so small he has got his own room and there are some other rooms where he
1:49 pm
can move as well he. put unity to watch t.v. as well as far as i know and he has got showers and everything you need actually you mentioned bradley manning i know you had plans to visit him as well and you actually support and sympathize with someone who also was declared as an enemy of state by america do you really believe you will be allowed to see him well i do have my plans and fortunately the u.s. embassy in berlin cannot help me. in visiting bradley manning i will try my best now or through the german embassy in washington d.c. and minister of foreign affairs in germany probably they or hopefully they can help me to get my aim to visit bradley manning and why you think the cases
1:50 pm
of bradley manning. important it's unfair to put him in prison. about eight hundred. without any charge so and this is totally inacceptable totally unacceptable. in democracy you cannot just. you know put someone into prison and torture him and this is what the un said about bradley manning who was tortured by the u.s. army in the prison where he was and this is not acceptable and we have to stand up for human rights do you think this tradition might change after the elections in the u.s. while i'm afraid that there will be no change the actual president barack obama he won his campaign with his. saying about the change
1:51 pm
so all he promised a change in the u.s. but the thing is the fact is that he was doing the same like george bush he has his exfoliating killings he has the crimes he has the walk rhymes and he has gone time now more and everything else what george bush done before barack obama so it will be same it's not. just changing the persons but the policies going on i got lots of really hundreds of e-mails and letters from people all over the world which are supporting and giving me the strength to go further and. do some work like this what i have done and they are supporting me in being really interested in real human rights issues and fighting for human rights of someone like bradley manning you were criticized in your country and internationally for
1:52 pm
signing a petition accusing the us of preparing a war against syria and iran we do have as a metric a war against syria done by saudi arabia qatar turkey for example and turkey as the front state of the nato and the need to member states like germany. britain france they have send the services of the secret services to syria to for example to help the free syrian army to make the regime change policy is against international law and this is what we have signed we would like to protect the international law international relations and that means no to the regime change policy you also say the interview to
1:53 pm
a german newspaper that and the terms of the international law on quote turkey and us and german supporters are actually the aggressor that it was after turkey attacked syrian targets following some shells from the syrian side is that true you really can see them as aggressors well turkey is giving place at the border to syria to the free syrian army firstly secondly they have. guaranteeing the free syrian army. they have guaranteed and give them the opportunity to educate themselves in educational camps for fighting and i mean this is against international law ok they're not openly making the war against syria but there is a secret as a metric a war going on against syria and this is not acceptable as
1:54 pm
a member of parliament i guess you question your government about support of the militarized wing of the syrian opposition do you think. in the right direction in trying to resolve the crisis in syria nor they are a cause of the problem too because they the secret service the being is working we do know that. they are in syria giving advisors. two groups which are. connected to the free syrian army. one part of the war i think and that's why i think it's very very. for the german government it's. very. unfortunate that they are taking part in this war against syria what proof do you have while we have made in
1:55 pm
question harry to the german government we do it from the media that to be giving advisors and information information about the moves of the security forces by the regime in syria the german government was not denying this. very said very upset about the situation that my government the german government is not. is not helping to get a solution to the war in syria. now it's doing the opposite it's part of the problem there in syria and is acting against international law it's part of the war of syria and is part of the aggression against syria and this makes me sad and upset we are in solidarity
1:56 pm
