you're. a new israeli invasion looms over gaza as the palestinian enclaves blasted with artillery and air strikes which are claiming a rising number of civilian lives. as israel say's this is just the beginning of the country's appeal for an end to the airstrikes and the rocket attacks. news builds just hours after a twenty four hour hand european strike brought over twenty countries to a standstill new figures suggest the eurozone is now back in recession. beijing ushers in the new top officials which will lead the country for the next decade in ten minutes so we look at how the world might be changed by china's emerging economic mind.

thanks very much for joining us today here on our. show and life in moscow the israeli military is converging on gaza as it continues to pummel the palestinians from air land and sea the operation dubbed pillars of defenses on the verge of turning into a whole new invasion three israelis at this point at least thirteen palestinians including children and a pregnant woman have already been killed. and joins us now with the latest from the region tom thanks for coming on so quickly more people are dying now what's television saying about the operation and the prospects of a ground invasion. hi rorie yes well it is a rapidly developing situation here we've just got some information some unconfirmed reports from israeli media that tanks on. moving south towards the
8:02 am
border with gaza we've trying to confirm that with the israeli defense forces they will not confirm that at the moment it seems though that may be happening which would indicate the situation moving towards a ground invasion of gaza as all of that goes on we've also got airstrikes continuing they have continued throughout the night and into today i spoke a little while ago to a source inside gaza as i was on the phone to him we heard explosions outside his apartment block and he was saying that the casualties are mounting and that the israelis are using a lot of drones flying over gaza that are dropping small missiles to try and target what they call the terrorist infrastructure there to try and kill hamas operatives there earlier today the funeral of jaggery the head of thomas's military wing was
8:03 am
held know how mass of people went to that. staff went to that funeral for fear that they may be targeted in airstrikes there on the other side how mass is busy launching rockets into southern israel today three israelis were killed when a rocket hit their apartment block in the south of israel although there are varying reports about the effectiveness of israel's iron dome air defense system some reports suggest that about three quarters of the rockets that have been intercepted have been shot down other reports so suggests that it's been less effective that ongoing as well talking to one of the neighbors of those people killed in the south of israel he said that the sirens have gone off and he's had to run to his shelter over fifteen times in the last twenty four hours so
8:04 am
a very tense situation on both sides. of the border down there certainly tom as you've been talking just now we've been showing some of the latest pictures from gaza showing some of the death and destruction there let's talk about more of a global impact here the international community any reaction from them at this point any pressure being exerted on the israelis and palestinians to lay down their arms. but it seems there are attempts at some pressure there's various voices from various parts of the international community right here in the region we've got a palestinian liberation organization spokes person saying that this is a deliberate attempt by israel to try and ruin palestine's bid for statehood we've also got enough good of the palestinian president to say he's cut short a visit to europe over this and he has said more than once that he's called for a stop to this israeli aggression egypt has been very vocal it's withdrawn it
8:05 am
sounds to israel it's called for a u.n. security council meeting on this subject. gyptian president mohamed mursi has called this unacceptable and it's there are reports he's trying to get the u.s. to pressure israel into stopping this attack the u.s. has said for its part that israel has the right to defend itself and russia are also commenting on this saying that israel's attack is a disproportionate use of force against gaza so all of this international furor erupting over this attack that may or may result in a ground invasion those are the fears at the moment the latest from the southern border is the head of israel's southern command saying that this is just the beginning by what i was the egyptian foreign minister as you were saying a moment ago that actually telephoned hillary clinton the u.s. secretary of state just a couple of hours ago saying please rein in israel apparently it's done little. to
8:06 am
no good whatsoever in tel aviv bottom thank you. or when i was joined live from embattled gaza by human rights activist eighty eight more about joining us here on the program it's a pleasure to see you today thank you for coming on israeli officials hailing the operation is a successful series of pinpoint strikes with minimal collateral damage that sound about right to you or. i've just come back from schieffer asked every single ambulance that comes in every ten minutes was actually or children coming in to the hospital i've seen. she didn't have a hand that was just pulled out of the ambulance it is the civilians who are the vast amounts of the injured that are coming into she said we just spent time in the intensive care unit there was a little girl and i rather she's the only one you had an entire fish and she was not showing any signs of life they were saying that she was hemorrhaging eyelids
8:07 am
were bad he was was was being moved around and then about an hour afterwards we heard that she too had passed away this was from an event and strike there said many children and men and women who were being killed being injured and this is this is a massive massive crime against a defenseless population week we've seen it before with the operations cast lead they killed three hundred thirty children then fourteen hundred people i bet they have been civilians what's going to happen now how on earth that we have found this to take place again this kind of carnage is the better thing that would be managed and we know the israelis does not hesitate for one second about killing lots and lots of civilians these are crimes against humanity in records as the united nations report exposed in the previous attacks on gaza and of course other source sort of jump in sort of jump in here very very quickly i spoke to an israeli official p.r. man just last hour and he was describing the deaths of children simply collateral damage and moments ago moments ago britain's foreign secretary william hague said
8:08 am
hamas must be the main responsibility your thoughts. well this is just the absolutely despicable despicable typical narrative coming out from western governments given for the state of the beginning of this these attacks began on thursday the eye of november when. it was killed and he was the senior and he was playing for the eastern side with this was this was. this supposed to be perfect response israel came back there were some rockets sent over there and these were israeli soldiers this is an israeli this is a military occupation the longest in modern history completely illegal under international palestinians have a right to resist an illegal occupation said the beginning of this balance began with israel the masses the masses amounts of the injured are in the palestinians that is just back in march when there were twenty palestinians were killed and it was initiated better israel it was the need to strike what was i mean certainly
8:09 am
certainly russia russia is from one of russia's one excuse me say that israel is using a disproportionate level of force when it comes to it's a retaliation of the palestinians but it must also be mentioned that there are two sides to this and both sides are using weapons here to tell us more about see what is being done by hamas to protect civilians are people able to reach the bomb shelters in time i get the medical the medicine that they need. how on earth can there be any better chance than glad that was one of the most tightly packed places in the world it's one of the most crowded places on the planet as can be but i'm sad that people are completely exposed to the things most powerful military in the world behind me that sixty's i was sad of america the bams of reading you know that it is an attack on the defense this population over half the population actually been there was one hundred fifty injured now and the town is rising clearly the killed ten is rising and we are expecting more and more as well is that it will be at times there's a band now i just heard it in the background we just have to pick up this we're
8:10 am
picking up the sound effect here or here or if he says well if i may i'm sorry but interrupt you but this is basically a very very fluid situation that we have here is a very fluid situation i appreciate you joining us and i'm running low on time if i may that hamas has vowed to unleash quote hell on israel in response will the movement be able to deliver on this threat. i think the for now as long as israel keeps coming bad and killing so many civilians and so many people then there will be a response from i would imagine there would be a response from the mass government then there is a continuous stream for the narrative that is forgetting the chronology of this forgetting the incredibly advanced weaponry that is unleashed on the palestinian civilian civilians and forgetting the entire context of the fact that palestinians have been living under siege for fab years whether or not any good story chances to do the development of the many people of that you know having access to medical approach and it's really time that everybody stood up and said what desmond tutu said that this is where i stand i pads had south africa and the state's medical
8:11 am
labs because if the governments are going to typically buy the party line in this disease of supporting israel no matter what despite the horrific carnage on seeing around me everywhere if you would dare come and look at the hospital and meet the families that are now reaping every morning for that massive life you would see yourself that this is despicable they the presentation of events and you can see the numbers and the value of palestinian life in the west is presented as less than israeli life because the casualties are so much more on the palestinian side and the collective punishment which is against the geneva conventions article thirty three of the entire population most of whom the children it's an absolute obscene disgraceful a time on a on a civilian population and there are so many people who are losing their lives and the heartache and the true scenes of tragedy should send messages to the rest the world to say the governments don't do anything the people have to hit the streets the people after isolate them is rather people have to say remember no more was only eighty more masha ossie we have our people in the region and we are keeping
8:12 am
all of our viewers absolutely up to date on this ongoing fluid situation of human rights activists to eighty more masha live from gaza many thanks for joining us on our t. today. by the way to get more out now on this developing situation here on r.t. and cross over to middle east analyst nathan through all now joining me live from jerusalem on the program with mr thrill thank you for coming on you support the theory that the current gaza israel conflict is due to the upcoming israeli election showed netanyahu is not cynical enough to launch a war to its neighbors just to get good p.r. i think you need to look at the situation as one in which there's been a low level of violence as a constant for the last several years and every week there are incursions by the israeli military into the guards a buffer zone and every week there are rockets that come from gaza so the question has to be asked given that there is a constant low level of violence and given that new place a cli every two to three months there is
8:13 am
a significant escalation why during this escalation did israel choose to assassinate the head of. the military wing of the israeli officials and sort of get in here israeli officials have been saying that this man has been on the terror list for many many years indeed if i may egypt's been calling tensions between israel and other nations in the region for years how hard will it be now for cairo to continue doing that with this escalating tension do you think. i think that for israel the reaction from from from egypt is one of the most critical factors that they're. concerned about here and it has been a primary deterrent to an israeli escalation or and israeli assassination of the sort you saw yesterday in the past regarding the. question of why israel hadn't assassinated. before i mean that's that is precisely the question.
8:14 am
he's been on their wanted list for over a decade he was the most wanted man in gaza but they assassinated yesterday after there was a low and and i think that the. answer is that there has been a great deal of pressure on the israeli government which has looked very impotent during this escalation and this is not new a year ago in august two thousand and eleven the opposition party was screaming at the top of its loans that that likud was impotent and that that demon knew how to handle this problem so as you say that there may be some politicking involved when it comes to the upcoming elections in the near the near the last week of january but if i may i mean we've been getting reports here at r.t. and moscow that that along the i.d.f. the israeli defense forces swelling ground troops are bringing in all mad cause i mean do you think israel will go all the way this time as opposed to four years ago and try to occupy gaza. i think it's
8:15 am
a possibility i don't think at this point it's a likelihood i think israel's preference is to handle this from the sky and not to put ground troops in and i think that if you don't see anything in dramatic in the next hours if you if you don't see a rocket land in tel aviv for example if you don't see a massive. series of casualties on the israeli side that it's possible you will see a deescalation without a ground ground invasion but israelis continue to say that they are ready to to occupy gaza if need be and it's certainly a possibility i mean i do say they say they're ready to occupy gaza if the need be what would that need be. i think the need would be that they are unable to handle a problem from the arrows as they are currently attempting to do and they are seen to be seen by the israeli public to not be enough effective in stopping rocket
8:16 am
fire on civilian population sometimes we understand here to see that israel is using less fighter planes and more drones now to continue the assault on gaza one issue we see if you hear is this talk about the regional implications and i thought of isolation because israel's been worried of a growing tension in the region israel's borders with syria very unsafe political tension in lebanon militants in egypt's sinai why would israel want to add yet one more conflict to such neighborly troubles i don't think it's a matter of israel wanting to add a conflict i think it's a matter of. the israeli public and again i think the elections are important here looking at a region in which the israeli public feels imperilled they see mortars coming from from syria they worry about the conflict from some serious spreading they worry about rockets from hezbollah and this was one thing that the israeli government

could do to show that it is capable of protecting its citizens as as they desire. all right. excuse me at least and i think through all their life in jerusalem many thanks for taking the time to come on our team today thank you. well a smooth change at the top in china beijing has confirmed its change of leadership for the next decade just a few moments here on the program we'll look at how these changes could impact the global economy as well as china's relations with other nations. no one should be proud of heaps of scrap metal littering pristine arctic land. buildings still ting over their foundation pipes spinning black smoke over the snow covered peaks the traces of the soviet industrial activity on the burgen archipelago don't make a pretty picture the guiding principle here is the worst the better that can do

to two thousand and fourteen when most nato troops have left the discussions come amid a climate of mistrust with the thorny issue being whether u.s. soldiers should be given immunity from prosecution. as in kabul to talk so hard to see so exactly what's on the table. of course as you mentioned there the u.s. and afghanistan have kicked off talks on thursday tough talks about the security framework agreement that the two countries will maintain after most of the nato combat forces withdraw from the country at the end of twenty fourteen now these are expected to be rather controversial contentious talks they come amid a climate of suspicion and mistrust between the two countries one of the biggest issues on the table here we expect this to take about several months to complete and of course the afghan government has long complained about the conduct of u.s. forces operations on the ground here in afghanistan some of the issues that they are not happy with are for example the controversial u.s.
8:23 am
special forces strikes night raids that end up killing many civilians that's an issue that's really not sitting well with afghans on the ground here also airstrikes that also result in resulting in massive civilian casualties now as you rightly mentioned there the issue of sovereignty here is a top deal i mean the afghan government insists that american soldiers who are accused of committing crimes here in afghanistan are tried within this country under afghanistan's legal system american troops say no they want their men and women to be tried in the united states and of course this issue has taken on rather . more urgency in light of the massacre that took place in march where an american soldier was accused of going essentially on a shooting spree killing sixteen civilians. in the kandahar province issues like this really do resonate with the public it's a very visual example of sort of misdeeds by the u.s. forces and of course the illegal murder of civilians is certainly something that
8:24 am
should be tried under afghan law according to the officials here this also comes amid a climate of mistrust by afghans after certain cultural missteps for example the controversial video that showed u.s. marines urinating on the corpses of afghans as well as of course the notorious cases of koran burning sort of indicating the climate of social insensitivity that unfortunately exists on the ground here with u.s. troops when we see you making mention about the misdeeds of u.s. forces and ultimately the mistrust on the ground as well though in the past few months have had a number of headaches for the american side a particular you know in washington as well one of the other issues they're facing . well of course the controversial green on blue attacks are very much a big deal here we've seen the deaths of about fifty eight nato forces thirty five americans and at least forty two separate attacks and what this is the result of is a effectively the u.s. government is trying to very quickly build up help build up the afghan national security forces and as a result of the rush to sort of do this the people are necessarily vetted and what
8:25 am
we've seen is instances of for example taliban plans ending up in the ranks of afghan soldiers who end up turning their guns against the american trainers as well as other afghans who may or may not be happy with the conduct of certain soldiers and end up turning their guns on the americans as a result of that and so what this really reflects is perhaps a policy that hasn't necessarily played out very well and we have to keep in mind this is a levin years into the u.s. war effort here in afghanistan six hundred billion dollars have been spent on this effort and it we haven't really seen the taliban and certainly lisa you know i belong to obama back in for another four years sort of jump in and he's getting you guys into the. scandal stories as well so we'll just have to see how it pans out i'm out of time lucy thanks so much. joining us here. now china's weeklong power transfer has come to an end with z. jinping being anointed the communist party's next leader he's a taking over from hu jintao a who has led a beijing up through rapid economic growth overtaking japan as the world's second
