triss takes hold between israel and hamas bring the relative calm after the flare up in violence that's killed five israelis and scores of palestinians. but i may have a shaky cease fire we'll look at why bring peace agreements between the two have failed to stop bloodshed in the region. plus the battle of brussels with european leaders said to cross swords over the trillion euros e.u. budget while their public back home angrily protest over a stare at. eleven
2:01 am
am in the russian capital you're watching r t with me marina joshie now more than a week of bloodshed on the gaza border has halted with a cease fire to and strikes which have killed five israelis and more than one hundred fifty palestinians the truce began shakily with several rockets fired into southern israel after the deal was sealed well we can now cross live to our correspondent paula sleazier who is in tel aviv for us paula it's been several hours now since the cease fire agreement came into effect so what are the politicians and the people say about the deal. well the ceasefire ends some of the fiercest fighting we've witnessed in years between israelis and palestinians the final death toll is five israelis who have been killed and more than one hundred and fifty palestinians who have died many of these palestinians also billions of women and children there's also wide scale destruction and devastation across the gaza strip if indeed the truce holds it will mean that roughly one point seven
2:02 am
million gazans will have a spike now from what we've seen eight days of heavy bombardment at the same time it brings with spikes to roughly a million israelis who live in the south of israel and who've been on the receiving end of constant barrage of rockets but i say if that holds because it is perceived as being rather fragile it certainly is a truce that came by surprise it followed a day of deadly violence in which some twenty eight israelis were injured in the first bus bombing in tel aviv since two thousand and six and there were massive israeli air strikes over gaza and what we've witnessed in the past week is rockets from gaza for the first time hitting israel and jerusalem and this too was thought to create a much harsher response from the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu so the sense on the ground particularly in the hours leading up to the announcement of the cease fire was that israel was going to go ahead with a ground offensive netanyahu has said that he is willing to give this truce a chance he says however he does hold open the possibility to reopen the conflict
2:03 am
at a later stage he said and i'm quoting i know that there are citizens in israel that expected a more severe military action to be taken and perhaps we will need to do so there was criticism towards netanyahu particularly among people in the south of the country who would have supported a ground offensive and wanted to see a much harsher israeli reaction we've had protests in several cities in the south at the same time in the last hour or so they have been fifty arrests that have been made in the west bank by the israeli army we're being told that these are leaders of both hamas and islamic jihad. as well as members of the palestinian parliament so while the ceasefire at the moment is holding a certain is a lot of tension on the ground and a lot of questions as to whether or not it will stand the test of time well absolutely well as you just mentioned earlier everyone is concerned about how about the fragility of the cease fire as you put it so what exactly are the terms of it. what we start we still don't have too much information exactly what the terms of
2:04 am
the cease fire do in fact say but i can tell you that israel for its side has committed to ending hostilities in gaza and at the same time stopping with its targeted killings a must for its side has also said that it will stop firing rockets into southern israel and staging cross border attacks now there is a lot of questions still hanging over the whole issue of whether or not israel will lift its blockade on gaza that has been in place for several years now we do understand that is what must begin talks re opening this for the of the border crossings and lifting the blockade and easing restrictions on the movement of both people and goods the text does say that the whole discussion for the procedures for this will begin some twenty four hour was off to the ceasefire it was unknownst now the side says that it will not lift the blockade probably has been moving from a massive political viewer to khaled mashal and he has said that the deal covers the opening of all a little crossing so hopefully we'll get
2:05 am
a little bit more territory of on that in the always that comes in the immediate moments after the cease fire was announced late on wednesday there was a barrage of rockets that hit into southern israel the sovereign's were waiting and at the same time israeli airplanes were striking over gaza so it didn't seem at that point that the cease fire was going to hold since then things have been quiet so sitting at this stage it looks as if the truce is holding but that doesn't mean that there isn't a lot of mistrust on both sides i really think that both the israelis and hamas do not really trust the other side to stick to their into of the bargain the failed. to address the root causes of what actually instigated this violence in the so space really holds the sway of jeopardising the streets as this package explores. this ceasefire deal doesn't even begin to address the root causes of the conflict and as long as they remain the decades long cycle of violence is almost assured to
2:06 am
continue by now most people lost track of all the previous cease fire agreements and more generally of where it all started and it became for the most part a chicken and egg conversation you have the years long suppression of the palestinians we saw the radical forces among them rising in striking it is well with is well coming back at them so hard that even most peaceful palestinian started sympathizing with radical forces without going too far back in history in two thousand and six the palestinians in gaza elected hamas that promised a more affirmative response to the story of the occupation in response israel put gaza under blockade the list of import was directions among many many other things including things like cement wood cattle animal medicine musical latest romans notebooks at one point even lentils pasta to made or paste and chocolate were on the list of items not allowed into gaza it's not easy to gauge what the blockade meant for the people there and all the humiliation that went with it is
2:07 am
well insisted that the purpose of the blockade was to pressure hamas into ending the rocket attacks the attacks did not stop they intensified in two thousand and eight israel launched a major assault on gaza operation cast lead killed more than a thousand palestinians and thirteen israelis did not solve the problem again it got worse and american officials keep repeating the mantra israel has the right to defend itself it sure does but the tragedy is that the palestinians to think they're defending themselves. now israel's deputy foreign minister says most of those killed and injured in the bombardment of gaza quote deserved it because he claims they were armed terrorist palestinian health officials and human rights activists however insist more than two thirds of those who died were civilians with almost half of them children israel though says the ratio is lower already talked to one of the country's m.p.'s who says her government conducted these sold in
2:08 am
a very measured way israel is putting so much effort to ensure that civilians are not hurt. i'm sorry but look at what we're spending on our money we're spending our money on defending our civilians making sure they're safe and making sure that we can we do not hurt civilians when we go to war what this hamas spend their money on they are hiding behind television crews they are hiding behind journalists and israel is doing something on paralleled in the history of warfare it making sure that people who are not involved are not killed and israel is really been commended by all countries not just for having the right to defend its citizens but also for the fact that it is couldn't ducting itself in a way that is very proportional and very measured. now journalist and anti-war
2:09 am
activists donna barr says the cease fire might save the palestinians from bombs but not from the consequences of the year long israeli blockade. their condition degraded from being storing to being starving and bombed and now the bombing apparently will stop and so that is a reason to celebrate as meager as it might seem in the face of starvation again the the precondition to dealing with that is to give the people if not justice at least you know enough to survive and have a decent life right now it's a million and a half people and open an open air prison camp without food without medicine without the material means of survival except for those crumbs that are allowed to pass through the hands of israelis and until that changes israel will not see peace . while update here on the situation surrounding the cease fire throughout the day and you can get fully across the story with our coverage and analysis from the outset attitude a calm. leaders

are sets for a major showdown in brussels where the are gathering to thrash out a budget deal while some states are calling for a reduction in spending those how we depended on the e.u. funds are fiercely against any cuts britain is the loudest voice against a budget increase but as artie's laura smith reports the chances for it to strike a good deal are very slim. it's not shaping up to be a pleasant couple of days in brussels after three years of economic turmoil in the e.u. which if we could political. talk would be emerging on one side northern europe and countries like the u.k. which are demanding huge cuts in spending to match. that's making keys to the south and east who are dependent on cash from brussels very uneasy e.u.

president herman van rompuy is between them he suggested seventy five billion euros cut to the more than when the it budget but that. britain appears to warm to the idea really wants to cut two hundred forty billion ole that means leaders from both sides of the budget provide of reckoning be to david cameron heading to brussels on what many are calling mission impossible heat on the intense pressure at home to cut budget contributions but the daily telegraph newspaper understands that his negotiating position is based on the e.u. budget as a whole not the u.k.'s in the budgets that could needs to him signing a deal that reduces it as a whole but increases britain's coach that wouldn't be at all popular and could easily lead to another rebellion in cameron government but at the situation it's

not clear at all whether a deal will be possible. another eight you had a. leaders are furious of the country being left in limbo european finance chiefs fail to agree on handing over the next thirty one billion euros athens vitally needs to avoid insolvency leaving it straining to meet at arista mance and with thousands of layoffs sparking even more protest economists antonius ragas so there are on the edge. well you had this very old kind of blame game going on between the greek government and i met for the troika all together and if you want to kind of the dog ate my homework kind of excuse me going on over and over again both of those were very disastrous almost too funny at all no results for people here on the ground people are really not buying into this kind of thing which is a very blatant lie going on he's going to excuses i'm just an example just to show you how many things are going on i'm not really being very much reporting to you and i couldn't three hundred twenty five municipalities across the entire country

british live demo minister live featherstone said that since women have babies it allows men to pass them up on the letter to power such a children are set back for women who want to be successful and equal to men so they want to give them the option of taking maternity leave or would that be paternity leave i don't know i kind of see the logic of her view but my question is for. stone is why exactly is success in the corporate world the primary goal of life for men and women as a feminist i would think you understand that wanting to fight your way up a ladder to buy a big car to replace your shortcomings is a very male way of judging success are women who choose to have families failures or at least unsuccessful in your book even as a man i know that my pocket is really empty after having the first of hopefully many kids but i don't see our child as a financial setback keeping me from buying an x. box guess what success is relative to the goal and maybe

sixty seven trillion dollar industry regulators say the regulators are the financial stability board and they say it's six trillion dollars more than they thought it was only a week or two ago wanted to have a parallel universe you have the global economy then you have it kind of a death star that circles the globe run by banks there's fraudsters kleptocrats who prey on the poor things with their shadow derivatives and shadow banking system and they commit all manner of fraud is totally unregulated in the shadow banking system as just big as the banking system and it's the primary source of the fraud that's destroying the global economy and yet it's growing by leaps and bounds that's the very definition of financial accounts it is where all fraud goes to hide a lot of it is something like repurchased agreements the repo one hundred five that took down lehman brothers they had fifty billion for example hidden in these repo
2:28 am
one hundred five repurchase agreements out there in the dark pools the dark matter which sucks in all of the real wealth the real activity of our economy is sucked into this thing so the fs to be a global financial policy group comprised of regulators and central bankers found that shadow banking grew by forty one trillion dollars. between two thousand and two and twenty eleven the share of activity based in the u.s. has declined from forty four percent in two thousand and five to thirty five percent in two thousand and eleven moving to the u.k. and the rest of europe so as you see there was a mammoth growth in it since two thousand and two right moving to the u.k. when david cameron wants to defend the city in london he wants to defend the shadow banking system that has its headquarters here in london and you mention the lehman brothers repo want to five scam just briefly for people to understand what that
2:29 am
means is that at the end of the quarter when they're supposed to report to regulators they're there they're their balance sheet the liabilities and assets that they have they will temporarily put all the liabilities they'll park them in the shadow banking system that we're they won't report the liabilities they therefore making their profits look greater than they are and then the regulators move on to the next company they download the liabilities once again and they do this on a quarter by quarter basis this is done by all the fortune one thousand companies that are engaged in massive accounting fraud using the the shadow banking system to cook their books commit these foreign remaining big accounting firms are involved day in and day out with massive accounting fraud there they're just as guilty as lehman brothers and financial terrorism the deloitte and touche the educate p.m.g. they're just as guilty as the rating agencies and financial terrorism we're actually going to move on to them in a in the next story they want at this point i want to cover this shadow banking system because remember the shadow of the movie had the shadow had the power to cloud men's minds.
