freedom that echoed over the last two years and interation of claims that the goals of the pro-democracy uprising have not yet been achieved so to talk more about the political situation in egypt recent spur violence against women and the fact that all this is having on the region at large i'm joined now by. associate professor at texas westerling university school of law and legal fellow at the institute for social policy understanding thank you so much for coming on thanks for having me so i can't help but just get this out of the way you know mubarak was in power for thirty five years i look at our democracy here today and i see two reigning families the bush family and the clinton family that have pretty much been raining in our political process for the last couple decades i mean what's what's really different. i don't know it's just kind of a rhetorical question about is that it's just really interesting that you know we have these reigning political parties and families almost all over a process but your president the egyptian american. you support post-revolutionary

reforms in egypt why are we seeing these protests today a lot of what they're saying resonates with what we heard two years ago but i think it reflects some serious divisions within egypt in society that war they had come to a head during the constitutional drafting process when the liberals had walked out of the constituent assembly and women in coptic so and so it's essentially a continuation of a disagreement by many liberals women cops and secularists who don't think that morsi and the brotherhood represent their interests and also many of them are the youth and they feel that they have had their revolution stolen by the muslim brotherhood that is implementing. pretty much the same system except for on a religious platform and so they feel that they have been used to change power but then not rewarded in terms of giving them a place at the table particularly women. not having their needs met at all i mean let's talk about women you're here to speak about the state of women in egypt why

why do you say that they're being cast of the side and why this this upsurge in violence against them in the country well part of it is because there is a general lack of security so part of it is a consequence of that there has been an increase in crime in egypt unfortunately crime it was not at this nearly the same levels during the mubarak regime because he had a very aggressive security state so that has allowed common criminals to take advantage of that that that explains part of it the other part of it is the normative acceptance by portions of egyptian society that is ok to harass women that it is ok to catcall that is ok to. grope them and admirably many of the women and men so the new generation if you read about them in the news they're mainly in their twenty's and they are people who are active during the revolution have to take in this attitude of at street advocacy and using the public square to change real issues instead of relying on the government and they have created organizations like

harass map which is essentially a web site where people can post pictures and they can show where women have been harassed to show that there's a real problem because most of the time when women do complain they're told oh you're just making that up or you're exaggerating or that guy was just he was meaning to actually be nice to you that's one problem the other is women don't report it and this also allows them to do it anonymously because if you report sexual harassment that may have implications on your marriage ability that may have implications on your reputation because there may be a blame the victim and so in some ways it's really remarkable how the young people have used what they learned in the revolution now to a specific issues like. anti harassment of women that's great yeah i was reading articles saying that women are even scared to go to tahrir square because of it's becoming an epidemic which is just really unfortunate. last time you're here you're talking about the constitution and it seems like there's a lot of opposition against it i mean do you think that there's a possibility for portions of it to be rescinded is there

a possibility for this to be evolved into something better that represents more of the people i don't think is going to be rescinded any time soon i think the issue is going to be about interpretation and i think this is the ship has sailed in terms of the battle for what the provision should say and just worth noting is there are some provisions that are problematic with these of you women particularly in regards to emphasizing their role as mothers in international family roles and i think that's the concern by women's advocates is yes we don't we all many gyptian women are mothers and they get married it's a very traditional family structure in that regard but they also work and some of the maybe don't want to get married and so maybe some of them don't want to have children and so these provisions may make it unconstitutional to pass statutes or legislation that grant women certain rights and so so so a conservative judge or a conservative legislator who's trying to appeal something or oppose a draft bill could say this is unconstitutional because it violates the provision

the constitutional provision that says the state will protect the traditional family the will protect traditionally egyptian norms that will protect the woman's role as house keeper and worker so a lot of different interpretations could be had on the existing constitution it just seems like i'm opposition to the muslim brotherhood is really growing it's becoming more cohesive stronger will what will this mean for the next shift in egypt we have about a minute left so the true test is going to be in this parliamentary election and then in the next presidential election the reason why the brotherhood. won so many seats in the parliament the first time around for this is obvious because they were the most organized and they had access to the rural voters which is a big number of voters of the few number of voters so if the liberals and the secularists and the youth and those who are opposing muslim brotherhood can get their act together politically and serve mobilizing and campaigning and recruiting and earning the vote of the rural voters i think things are going to change now

hear you play your song playing the cards as more of a personal story why did you write this song and really who was it about. well last year i was doing a lot of different protesting performances and i got to meet a lot of different veterans who were of course supporting dr paul and i got to hear their stories and the one that inspired me to write that specific song was i was speaking with somebody on facebook and i asked him how have you served before and he said no but my father he served in vietnam but he's very sick right now he has cancer they believe it's from agent orange and of course when somebody says something like that to you you don't really have a very good response except for i'm sorry and he respond with oh well that's ok he's just playing the cards he was dealt and i thought that that was really inspirational that somebody could just. take these bad cards and just play them out in china do something positive with his life and there were so many people that i was getting to me that were doing taking these bad experiences and converting them

into something into an activism and it was really inspiring so i thought that that would be something appropriate considering how much more there is these days you have been a huge activist for dr paul. ron paul for those who don't know who we're talking about what is it about ron paul's message that resonates the most with you. well there's a lot of things i think i think when ron paul speaks you can tell that he's telling the truth which is very aware and that's very inspiring but his message is personal responsibility freedom leave me alone if i'm not messing with you and also the free market economics that he espouses is obviously a big draw for people i think that sometimes if people have a more democratic background they may not understand how his policies actually would help the poor so i think that when people get educated about austrian economics then they find the solutions are. more readily available without regulation of birth i think the most attractive thing about ron paul to me was his

stance on foreign policy that's a really attracted to him i was like is that there's a republican is the only one up there that is calling to end all bases to end all wars immediately i mean what does that really say about are the two party system really when you have some guy out of the box really advocating a lot of things i think and that's why his message resonated with a lot of more liberal leaning people i think the economic thing really does divide . people the message but really you know calling the end of wars and the bases well yeah there were probably remember one and then the fed and then the. absolutely do you see anyone now kind of taking his message and putting it to the forefront now that he's kind of stepped out of the political realm. i think that one of the things. that we all learned from that was that we cannot depend on government seek care of us and that we need to educate everybody i think that his whole candidacy was about education and i think that now everybody is able to take that message and

go out there and take personal responsibility and show other people and spread it so i think we've all taken over that mantle i don't think that there's one single person that's rising to the top but i think that some of the powering for everyone that was involved you know it's a really good point because every political movement of people look for leaders to follow and really all of us should be leaders of the idea is the most important thing and ideas cannot be squashed i mean they will move on and as long as we're all carrying those ideas with us and really stepping up to the point i think that's . you know where can people find out more about you and what's next for you well they can go to my website. and i'm planning a lot of gigs for the new year but i'm especially excited i started an activist talent booking agency called same site entertainment and so there will be a lot of the speakers that you are seeing last year. all in one place so if you want to have a local liberty event you can come to us and we will provide you with all the

today i want to talk about art both as an extension of human expression and as a tool for public awareness and social change to do so i want to highlight finnish underground artist sampson i began canvassing the streets and alleyways of helsinki with politically motivated posters and graffiti aimed at promoting a change to one of finland's most controversial laws take a look at this piece depicting a former cultural minister tendre car pella executing pirate children are praying at her feet it's a public criticism of the widely unpopular copyright law passed in two thousand and five called lex carr pella. since last october sam has been creating street art to raise awareness of the over reaching legislation that has opened the door for other arbitrary regulations that make pirating criminal for private use and bringing with it excessive fines and prison time strangely called for the penalties reserved for rapists and then now the online publication that nope dot com has quoted sam as

oakland california where i just moved from to d.c. has been experiencing a deadly crime wave where violence is jumped twenty three percent in just the last year with dozens of burglaries street violence and murders occurring every day oakland is one of the most dangerous cities in the country and residents are becoming desperate for a solution so desperate in fact that earlier this week oakland city council ignored boisterous two week long protests from the community to vote almost unanimously for a consulting contract to william bratton a strategic policy. or ships however the contract only lasts for one hundred twenty days and it'll end up costing taxpayers two hundred fifty thousand dollars to merely get breton's advice and how to believe it crime in the city and it becomes even her controversial when you realize what bratton is most infamously known for this support for the recently declared unconstitutional tactic known as stop and

frisk or better known as racial profiling community members that attended the eight hour long meeting expressed concerns about bratton implementing policies that would only further exacerbate tensions between oakland police and the people of oakland. and if you've ever done any activism in oakland you know that cops well let's just say that they're a little bit tahn happy and they don't have much patience for dissent now don't get me wrong the need for a solution to the violence in oakland is serious business but it's capped brooks an occupy oakland member said at the meeting she said we keep talking about crime but we're not talking about the causes of crime hiring bratton is like putting a band-aid over a gunshot wound you know what she's right pain huge contracts to crime consulting firms led by someone who thinks stop and frisk curbs crime is not the best way to

deal with the systemic problems of why violence exists look i want nothing more than to see oakland continue to flourish and gentrify as the beautiful city but i know it is where it can incorporate everyone in the community and alleviate the violence but we need to stop treating symptoms of larger problems of economic and social injustice in society. because if we don't crime and violence will never stop . quick. quick.
