and international sanctions. so they are watching artie's weekly news if you're with me kerry johnston well the world was why died this week of a dramatic images from central russia a plunging me tour exploded with a blinding flash before crashing in the urals early on friday and of course it's hard to imagine the shock that residents must have felt when they saw this incredible coming over the top of their heads and of course it took a while for people to realize what was actually happening the meteor blast set off a powerful shockwave smashing windows in buildings injuring and bewildering inside
7:02 am
. takes a closer look now at how it all happened. it was like a scene from a movie but with one exception it was real first the brilliant flash was big bright like he was shining across the sky you know blinding brighter than the sun the skies were lit up by a meteor or streaking across the skies above the russian city of over one of the half thousand kilometers east of moscow where not just any usual glare on the floor i thought it was lights from a cockpit then we ran to the window saw this strange cloud and then and then this. would turn around and the wall was a gun and someone had moved it this eries of massive explosions rocked the entire city damaging buildings and shattering windows.
7:03 am
nasa said the explosive force of the media were breaking up was the equivalent of twenty here oshima bombs over twelve hundred people were injured including over two hundred children mostly from pieces of shattered glass. the windows just exploded i saw one girl he had and a growing his hand were told to quickly put all clauses on and then ran outside and many were able to film the owner of the phenomenon later flooding the web with footage as rumors spread of what it might have been a stricken airplane a satellite that fell out of orbit even the beginning of the and of the world would nessa's reported seeing fragments of the crashing all across the region. i saw a small can there was a weird smell but it was not a fire so i think it's a piece of meteorite and the small during that know however most of the sighting

sternal to be ordinary peter buck fires because so far officials have not found any fragments of the medial or for now the immediate priority. he's to look after the injured and repair the damage to buildings especially the broken windows in schools and residential areas as sand bridger's a married drop below minus fifteen celsius is going to take time to clear everything else but for now science like this collapsed factory or a clear reminder no matter how advanced technology gets nowadays often when it comes to nature we can only watch helplessly and hope for the best. as you go pissing off reporting from the urals there well the meteors dramatic strike fired up reaction online almost instantly the video being shared and local speculating without the front has been keeping an eye on things for us what's been happening on the world wide web then you can share find all sorts of material relating to this meeting our online i'll bring you some of the most entertaining you can find coming up in just a few minutes. ok means he thanks very much for that. well in the meantime one
7:05 am
startling aspect to this is that no one seemed to see it coming together one by surprise tell us a bit more about that one of these sit well they do say that even though it's a rather large flying object now identified it's actually still there's still too many of them to actually see what's happening and so it's really hard to predict when exactly something is going to fly really close to earth especially when it's not as big as you would think it was i mean this was this was actually a doozy i don't know we can see it right here it was actually ten thousand tons when it was approaching earth but then of course it entered the atmosphere broke into several pieces and apparently they did they say they have found in the places where these pieces have apparently for one they found the supposed craters but when they started to actually look for the pieces of the meteor where they couldn't find them so i guess we have to trust the scientists on that one or the emergency ministry workers whoever is actually looking for them yes see this is exactly this
7:06 am
is this these are the holes where supposedly the pieces from the media were are now i guess securely stored under all this seawater anyhow but it does seem like actually siberia and this this region are actually sort of a magnet for all sorts of flying things that are just come bursting out of space and a ball of fire this this happened to be actually the largest object to have hit our planet in over a century the last time something. tremendous has happened was in one thousand eight with. the event yes when a humongous meteorite has also flown into i had flown from outer space apparently that was this this is not the obviously this is still what's happening in these their youth. but anyways that the event was actually a was actually a lot more drastic than this one has damaged more than two thousand square metres of forest it has fallen in siberia so. nobody was hurt like in this instance at
7:07 am
least we don't know nobody had the dashboard cameras at that point a back in one thousand nine hundred. that that event was actually also incredible for humanity you can say first of all there's actually no crater to be found from that secondly it has caused tremendous mutations in plants in trees and the lifestyle of entire wiped out entire. areas of forest again nobody can find the crater actually was a big fan of all sorts of mysteries like this one that actually google didn't try to find any pictures of the crater whatsoever people are saying yes the meteor has fallen but what exactly happened nobody knows but again that was the we're talking about this is now the consequences however we've been talking to people obviously trying to figure out what would have happened if the meteor has not hit for example the think plant but instead has hit something like one of the many nuclear facilities to actually syria absolutely there's seven nuclear facilities in the
7:08 am
ship and scrooge and in fact the entire region was kind of a hotbed for nuclear research back in the soviet era and they do have several very important euclid facilities nuclear storage facilities and one of them has actually come really close to becoming a second trouble twice already and the fact that it wasn't hit by the many falling meteor pieces is just amazing so thank goodness that didn't happen absolutely absolutely but still there are some people who are saying that if history is any indication it could have been worse there are telescopes and networks operated by nasa the u.s. it was kosmos in russia the european space agency others that are out there trying to detect its record afterwards but honestly there's a lot of there's hundreds of thousands and their biggest focus is on the really large ones ones that are hundreds of meters in diameter or kilometers in diameter that could potentially you know do do into the dinosaurs. of course you have to
7:09 am
understand the power of the blast of the of the sonic boom when the meteor has entered the atmosphere it was actually twenty times. on the march and i know not all of this is how getting on friday and where else in russia of course i don't know so. i guess this is i mean we all just have to be thankful that even though there have been numerous numerous people getting wounded from the shuttle everything i guess we still should be thankful that nothing more serious accident or a lot worse could have been a lot worse yes thanks for that for now thank you. well now as we've been saying the meta blast went viral online within minutes some enterprising locals taking the chance to cash in would you believe that some tried selling what they claim to a fragment of the crashed meteo the most expensive being offered for ten thousand dollars but of course how you know you're getting a if someone was willing to dip into their pocket for this there's no way of knowing if you have buying a piece of meteoroids or just
7:10 am
a lump of stone from someone's garden well i think the front has been gauging the mood on the web so it's a bit more about this. tell us tell us a bit more what's happening it has been absolutely a very busy weekend for the internet regarding this media are not just the city of chelyabinsk now first things first there's been a lot of very amazing hoaxes online well first we've got all of the dramatic video that's been coming and that just shocked the world and it was just such high quality video and even the audio that was coming through was just was very very catching and then you've got these these hoax tweets tanks have passed down the street citizens are urged to get into a shelter a lunch box handouts have been arranged and then we've got the same guy actually saying we're being given chemical protection masks and gas masks the city is almost entirely evacuated barricades are being put up an invasion is looming so you've got
7:11 am
these things that may seem sort of serious but actually they they're it's a complete hoax and then you've got a lot of funny things coming across the internet. such as you know posts like this the citizens of chelyabinsk are already checking to see what superpowers they may have. other people posting it's negative seventeen degrees celsius in chelyabinsk there's wind and a slight meteor shower and then the person who decided to post a valentine's post says who's that guy who promised to pick a star from the sky on valentine's day because obviously apparently did a very good job of it and then of course aside from twitter which has seen an astronomical no pun intended amount of traffic because of this you also see a lot of very hilarious photos and things being posted online a lot of photoshop happening there with angry birds riding the tail of the meteor
7:12 am
through the air into the city then of course you've got to have the russian favorite bruce willis stop calling me then there's the dinosaurs that stuff killed my brother next thing you've got is chuck norris why didn't the media hate america chuck norris kicked it to russia and then the nature loving president president putin harnessing the powers of the media or writing it right to earth that's a very popular thing to do with pictures of him being involved with the natural world and things like that so it's something that everyone enjoys over here and we're definitely keeping a close eye on it to see what develops later on the internet regarding this meteor of course the president is a man of the outdoors isn't he so you'd expect something suppose there was one thing incredibly that predicts not to tell you regarding football which is supposed to explain why this happened someone she tweeted a friend speculates about a match between then and england's liverpool. this was the day before the strike in your rules he said the victory would be as incredible as crushing to earth and they
7:13 am
did win so who knows if you never know it's going to hit the internet regarding absolutely hilarious ok thanks for that these are thank you you thank. well that just remind you if you missed anything we've been showing on r.t. concerning that meets your dramatic display you can always find it all r.t. dot com i think images as we've seen the from that crash reaction and first hand accounts are just a click away. a volatile situation in bahrain has been exacerbated by the latest clashes between antigovernment protesters and security forces this weekend scores were reportedly injured when riot police used tear gas and stun grenades against demonstrators
7:14 am
throwing stones and petrol bombs violence broke out when the protesters tried to make their way to the funeral of a teenager was allegedly killed by security forces earlier this week during a rally marking two years of the anti-government uprising that instant on the term of which all it is jeopardized also between a sunni dominated government mostly shiite opposition. activists say there are no signs of progress pending reforms. we're looking at two years in which we've seen no reform we've seen nothing change i mean we started this uprising two years ago and on that day the first martyr of the uprising was killed and now two years later on the same day fourteen fabric another teenager has been killed and this for me shows and displayed unlockable for continuous human rights abuses the continuous repression taking place on the streets are behind it's good the dialogue has come
7:15 am
back on the agenda and there is discussions happening but it seems that you know this latest latest escalation of the security against the people is going to possibly put dined in jeopardy within the ruling family i think of course there are those who simply want to please the international community to say look we're having this dialogue and there is not a great thing was continuing the violations on the street. or similar scenes echoed in libya and protests there also marking two years since the deadly uprising later this hour we take a look at why the ousting of the market often is still good no radical changes for the better for the country. that could or are choosing the next president with the current expected to stay after the break we explain why there was a little over so that when the sun. technology

innovation all the developments from around russia we. have heard. you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else you hear or see some other part of it and realized everything you thought you knew you don't know i'm sorry welcome to the big picture. news today. again flared up. these are the images. from the streets of canada. giant corporations rule the day.

welcome back borders closed international flights suspended security forces on high alert libya is marking two years since the beginning of the uprising that resulted in a bloody civil conflict foreign intervention and the toppling of the longtime leader moammar gadhafi. explains why any celebrations are overshadowed by desperation the current government fears of more unrest. gadhafi has lost legitimacy to lead and he must leave the shoot at their feet it's impossible to imagine a future for libya with get daffy still in power he must go. well
7:18 am
gadhafi is long gone and we don't need to imagine but can take a close look the revolt which began in benghazi was followed by an eight month nato bombing campaign costing thousands of lives and left libya torn apart drowning in conflict and suffocating in stagnation still rich in oil libya economically is a mess despite rampant unemployment and an overwhelming housing crisis huge construction projects are on hold and violence reigns if you look at the country before the bombardment the invasion by nato and nato support of militias. the country now you can clearly see the country is suffering from the front problems the not exist before the country's infrastructure has been destroyed you have militias running. freely on the streets. people
7:19 am
killing people and doing whatever they want so yes a lot has changed but not for the better amnesty international describes tribalism post gadhafi as armed militias acting completely out of control hundreds of them across the country arresting people without warrant detaining them incommunicado and torturing them all these points gadhafi was accused of by the rebels and the west now the watchdog says this is happening while the government is unwilling or unable to rein the militias and another problem is the south in december libya closed off its borders without niger chad and sudan citing a deterioration of security and declared the region a military zone where recently a video has emerged of representatives of the south libyan tribes declaring independence for the region the federation of south libya they claim the government has failed to secure the inside of the country and borders and this is
7:20 am
a result of stalled economic activity and discontinue a. and of a central infrastructure projects that have been driven by international partners well it's still not clear how that news is being taken in tripoli but in cambodia well for any chance of stability and finally who is reaping the fruits of this revolution well some analysts say it's an economic powerhouse putting lots of money into the region that the west just doesn't have while at the same time benefiting from their military efforts it's china the chinese have no boots on the ground they have no army use their. military. the west country so two years after the revolution for libya the only certainty is still gadhafi is gone. course you can check out our web site for more analysis of the consequences of the nato backed regime change in libya that and much more on r.t.
7:21 am
dot com. now during his state of the union speech president obama said america needs to boost its help for libya and its neighbors to bring security to the rest of region defending his counterterrorism framework he talked about the fate of arab spring countries and plans to end america's afghanistan military mission by the end of the next year or more from artie's going to chicago and in washington in his state of the union speech president obama outlined some of the external threats that the country speccing first of all pear spreading to different parts of the world for what he said although the u.s. is pulling troops out of afghanistan america's war on terror will continue to listen it's true different al qaeda affiliates of extremist groups have emerged from the arabian peninsula to africa the threat these groups pose is evolving. but to meet this threat we don't need to send tens of thousands of our sons and daughters abroad occupying other nations we will continue to take direct action
7:22 am
against those terrorists who pose the greatest threat to america although there was no mentioning of the word drone everyone knew that's what the president meant when he was saying direct action with no u.s. troops involved what he did not talk about was the limits for this war that is waging with a remote control the justification that the administration gave john brennan's words we don't punish people for past strike before they take action that offers a very broad scope for the use of drones to afghanistan president obama wants to leave some troops on the ground twenty fourteen when they're supposed to be all out in the speech you mentioned ongoing negotiations with the afghan government on that issue to be a hard bargain because the afghan government risks further spearing anger of their own population over foreign military presence one could sense a change maybe even your concern as the president on the results of the revolution the arab world he said it's quote unquote messy he said the u.s.
7:23 am
cannot dictate the course of changing countries like very very briefly pressure on syria and it was a change of tone remember how the u.s. was cheerleading for revolutions in those countries just a year ago with radical forces gaining momentum in places like syria like libya maybe the changes that we've now in the region are not much to their liking among other threats america faces the president talked about. he said he had issued an executive order to protect government agencies and structure from cyber attacks but he did not mention is how the u.s. government itself. acts like the reported cyber attack on iran's nuclear program while there's no proof that they're building them on this administration said it would view a serious cyber attack a. yes the united states is an act of war but apparently when the u.s. carries out the attack it should not be seen as an act of war. dorian's heading to

sanctions moving for the communist state of korea had previously carried out two nuclear tests during several rounds of u.n. sanctions regime based independent news editor james corbett says the timing of the day just one couldn't have been worse. really i think we fall into a lot of diplomatic pressure on china to use its leverage with north korea and it's and i imagine that officials in beijing must have known that this this was coming probably in the next few days and it certainly is it couldn't have happened at a worse time internationally speaking it's the lunar new year in china so basically the entire country is on holiday and in the u.s. are you there is no confirmed secretary of defense or central intelligence director so it's a very interesting time throw that through into that the wild card of xi jinping we don't know much about him or how he's going to lead china and the fact that kim jong un is a relatively new leader as well you also have the new army government in japan and there's a lot of wildcards in this mix to see how this is going to shake out but i think on

reviving global economic growth is one of the priorities for the g twenty summit that will take place here in russia. but the key to achieving that is setting the right policies to discuss what these policies should be i'm joined by on him. the head of the organization for economic cooperation and development thank you so much for joining me sir during this visit to moscow you had a chance to meet with russia's president vladimir putin was russia's bid to join the always discussed was almost the only topic because we did not have time to discuss too many more we discuss the g twenty also the accession of russia into the o.e.c.d. is for us of a game changer and it's going to be very important russia is very large economy it's a very important presence in the world of energy it's
7:43 am
a very important presence in all these international fora accent and so we really are very interested very excited about the buzz ability of having as a member and i think russia can benefit also from being in an institution that is not about lending money is not about giving grants it's not about the fixing economies that are not broken it's about policy discussions about what are the best possible policies and therefore what can be the best practices. that russia can adopt we're not going to tell russia what to do with russia we're going to tell the russians what all other countries in the world are doing about the same problem of health care the same problem of education the same problem with innovation the same problem with research and development the same problem with the tax structures the same problem with the deficit whatever you just mentioned taxation and that's definitely one of the big issues that you're working on in
7:44 am
particular with this. yes. trying to work with this scheme that many companies use to avoid paying taxes and these are big companies we're talking about including google and you know a number of others. what then amazon of course and starbucks and so on these are big names but there are plenty of companies i don't why refer to any company in particular because there are thousands we created the set of rules that are being used legally by these companies to avoid paying taxes ok now we have had a big war against tax havens about excessive bank secrecy about the secret accounts by people not divulging the names those are to hide away from the taxpayers so that was in
7:45 am
a way an easier war because we were fighting evil guy lity ok right no we are trying to combat a legal practice but that is giving absolutely the wrong results why because we wanted to avoid double taxation now we have created double nontoxic mission. and what is happening is that the balance between the multinationals and the states in terms of the states the governments receiving. a certain amount of resources that they need to discharge their duties towards the most vulnerable mainly is not happening and in times of tight budgets who is who is getting the brunt of increases in taxes the middle class the small and medium enterprises that cannot.
